Hi Guys, I have only had this device a few days and I love it. I work for an airline so I do alot of travelling, so a GPS and cell phone are pretty much a necessity.
Previously I had the HTC Touch Vogue. I was able to bypass the data and go directly to GPS (I used both TomTom and NavnGo8). I am wondering if there is such an app that will allow me to do this without using my data plan?

i was planning on doing same, assuming the GPS issue is fixed satisfactorily. But i believe you can't run an app from the SD external card until android 2.2 comes out, which should be here in september
but i've noticed some folks in the GPS "fix" threads indicating they've tested their gps on CoPilot, nandroid, sygic and others, so i assume they were able to install the mapping apps on the internal 16GB mem storage
i'll be curious to see the responses to this question
I think Copilot allows you to pre-load maps without the need to have a constant data connection, ala the true gps units.
Never mind. Wrong forum.

As are most of you, I am considering purchasing the HD2. And I have a question regarding tethering - I use TomTom services to get live traffic updates on my TomTom Go 720, and this requires bluetooth tethering. I couldn't make this work with an HTC Touch Dual I had previously, and it has just (last week) broken with my Nokia E71.
Does anyone know whether it will work with the HD2? I am not sure how to check this out before purchase ...
(BTW I know there are software solutions (e.g. Tomtom/ Copilot) but I currently think that a seprate device works best ...)
Hope this hasn't been asked before - I have looked?
Hi Jon,
I don't have an snswer for your question, but I'm interested in the scenario. I am a little confused about exactly what you're asking though.
What exactly are you tethering via bluetooth, an external GPS unit? Are you saying that TomTom does't function using the internal GPS unit?
Thanks for the reply.
The tethering is for data purposes - the tomtom has intetrnal GPS (obviously ) but uses a data connection to get additional services such as traffic updates and speed camera locations - so the questions is one about data tethering rather than GP.
Does this clarify things?
JOn
Ahhh, right - yep, understand, but can't help you unfortunately. :-\
Best of luck.
Edit: Hang on, isn't there an "Internet Sharing" app installed to most WM phones that's supposed to do that sort of internet routing?
tomtom devices don't support Internet Connection Sharing, but I can confirm that I use my HD2 with my tomtom go 930 and have had it working fine for traffic, weather etc - wm 6.5 seems to support bluetooth DUN as standard. The tomtom even offered to transfer my contacts from my phone, though I haven't bothered as I don't use the handsfree function.
I've been having some minor problems with the device crashing since flashing a new "cooked" rom, but that's another story...

there have been reports of some roms setting the bluetooth mac address incorrectly.
that's all I know, though so you'll have to search.
Hi, What do I need for my blackstone in order to use any (suggestions, which is better, would be a great help) GPS sowtware without internet connection. I am not an expert in this, but I know that GPS devices (like tom tom or similar) use satellite data to show coordinates. How can this be done on my touch hd? As only preinstalled program is google maps that require internet connection.
I don't have unlimited data plan, so this is extremely expensive for me, but I am a fan of geocatching, so I need GPS.
Please help me with description of how this GPS works and what soft should I use?
Thanks
There are lots of good Navigation/GPS Apps around that read standalone maps from your SDCard.
Take your pick.

Hi, thank for the info, but....
I installed TT7 with my region maps, but I still seem not to receive any GPS signal - my phone seems not to catch any satellite signal - is this a setting issue?
in tomtom7, just access the gps settings and set them to "internal gps receiver", then it should work immediately, given that in your very location you have gps coverage.
I've found that my Touch HD's GPS capabilities work great when I'm at home testing them, then fails to locate any satellites when I'm lost! lol
Not exactly true - but has got me before!
I would suggest that you try your GPS in various locations just to make sure that the building you live / work in, or the weather isn't blocking the signal that your phones GPS listens for...
I used TomTom for ages without issue, it can be copied directly from a memory card on a TomTom compatible device usually.
Recently my Dad bought iGo8 with the entire world maps installed, so I pinched that and run it straight off my storage card with just a few teething problems. This is the best GPS / SatNav on my phone so far...
+1 for iGO8
Best GPS software by far for me. This is the only and single reason why I haven't bought an Android phone yet.
If they would have created the same skinable thing for a HTC Desire etc the HD would be history.
If I were you.
1) disable a-gps, causes roaming costs and most gps application freak out on it (download advanced config tool and disable it that way)
Lock, no lock, lock, ... mostly caused by agps (assisted-gps). Assisted means that it also gets data from the cell-tower which abroad can cost you loads of money (and yes I had that once)
If you use HTC quick gps you will probably get a lock in seconds if you are outside so no need for assisted.
2) install the gps mod driver , this one 'thinks' ahead by calculating points that it gets from the GPS receiver. If you don't feel confident about this one skip it but read the thread and keep it in the back of your head.
3) buy iGO8 and install the gurjon skin which makes iGO look fantastic and makes it fully configurable the way you want it.
4) enjoy a fantastic GPS system
Hi guys I have just attempted to use the satnav installed on the MDJ 1.7 rom which I believe is google ? anyway I can get a gps lock by using gps-status then in the application it hangs on getting directions and will only work using the data connection any ideas ? or is there a better one ?
Just wondering fi tis fault with google or the GPS ? I can get lock so must be with the app ?
Oh it does work using data connection but no good in europe or USA.
I guess I could use WM just for SAtNav and copilot or tomtom but would be nice to have it all working.
AFAIK, it gets your location with GPS and then attempts to calculate the route, which requires a data connection. I'm not sure whether it needs the data connection after that or not, but I've driven 100's of miles using it and have never had the map stop moving or lose any information, so I don't believe it uses data during the journey. Maybe just a touch every now and then.
If it gets your location and then fails calculating your route then it suggests that there is an issue with your data connection.

Ahh that makes sense now so it needs data connection to download the route data then you can switch it off.
Still bit crap when you are abroad because data charges are like £1 per mb or so.
So guess I may get co-pilot from the "market" which seams quite reasonable ?
Thanks.
OK so this may be a strange request but im sure its possible. Ive got an old evo at home because my girlfriend mad the jump to att for the Atrix 4g. so i was wondering in stead of selling this beautiful device could i make it just a mp3/mp4 player with gps. no iv purchased navigon so that should knock out the gps part. but is there any way to just remove everything else like the phone and phone radios...all i need is WiFi. the messaging and basically every thing not absolutely needed for it to function. I tried just removing everything with root explorer but as soon as i deleted the phone.apk i got constant force closes. So thinking i must go a different route. Any ideas any one?
Im not sure, I know you can keep it in airplane mode, that turns off all radios and data. You could still play musuc, games, and videos with it
thanks to your idea and my old samsung moment i now have a new mp3 player when i dont want to use my evo's battery lol
No prob, glad I could help
Youd be much much better off selling it since they go for around 400
I'd say airplane mode and or wifi only with 3g off. You could probably create a custom profile with any of the tools like "profile settings"
I'm using a family members first Iphone as mp3+gps as well so you aren't entirely crazy.
This is sort of what I plan to do with my Evo when I upgrade this year. As far as I can tell though you won't be able to use GPS as you'd need 3G to download the maps. Unless Navigon loads all the maps onto your SD card you won't be able to drive and navigate (without tapping into local wifi, at least).
I believe google maps will pull over wifi.

Yeah, but he can't do that on the go.
Hey OP, i agree with Knives. you'd be MUCH better off selling it and buying a 160gb ipod and a tomtom. You'd probably even make money on the deal. just my $0.02
Same thing with the Xoom
Google maps needs a data connection. And the GPS I believe is AGPS, or assisted GPS, so it still really wants some type of network connection to narrow down your location.

No, it's a true GPS. i've used mine without cell service. it's still able to nail down my location perfectly.
I know this topic has been discussed previously, but I haven't been able to find the answer yet so here goes:
As I understand it, GPS is working in all/most sense and cm based builds however AGPS seems to be an issue all have in common. From what I understand AGPS is just a helper function for quicker GPS locking so even though AGPS isnt working, you should still be able to get a lock.
Now, since before we got nand based ROMs for HD2 I used haret to load android from my SD card. Back then I used GPS depended applications like c:geo for geocaching and car navigation progs, as well as progs for finding nearest resturant when I visit other cities/countries.
Been a while since I had the need for it, but recently with the nice weather geocaching for example have become an interest. What I see now is that none of the ginger/cm/non-sense builds I have tried have given me a GPS lock. I have tried the GPS fixes, flashed Norway.zip for tweaking my gps.conf, installed gps-status but no chance in getting a lock. and yes, I have been giving it quite some time, outdoors.
Anyone else having these problems? I see from screenshots on for example the HyperDroidCM7 ROM that you can get a lock, so its not a problem for everybody. Is my assumption on what AGPS is, correct? Any worarounds to get GPS functionality working? Strange to have these problems now, since it worked kinda well before
EDIT: tried now with [10.MAR.11][CWM] RAFDROID HD 4.0.2|Fastest Full DesHD|DATA2EXT|[Rafpigna 1.8 OC], still no lock
There's no driver support for AGPS, so the best we can do for now is to tweak our gps.conf and use gps status. If you can't get a lock at all, it could be a HW problem. If geocaching is a necessity for you, you could go back to WM and sd Android, use WM to grab AGPS data, then boot into Android.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I use that rom, but the 4.0 (really not much of a difference for me between the 4.0 and 4.0.2), and I always have a lock quickly.
1) Did you try installing the GPSFix.0.1 apk file and running it? that downloads a criticial file xtra.bin into your data folder.
Also try the 1.2 files and see if you have any luck, because I know in the 4.0 of Rafdroid, the gps works very well.
Same as Angeldeath, I use Rafdroid and it works ok.
Mine was faulty a couple of weeks ago and HTC warranty had to swap the board (and also did the screen, keys etc). In the end it would still lock but after a while it would freez or have no reception anymore.
But to be honest I don't like the GPS receiver at all in the HD2. There are numerous tests and other people to back me up on the tremendous jitter the receiver has which makes you jump all over the place.
A nice test is to place it in the car and switch on the cruiscontrol at 100km/h, or even worse at 180km/h. The thing will jump atleast 10% in speed.
When I need to drive or walk long trips I use my iBlue 747A+ 66 Ch Bluetooth GPS Logger which you can buy cheap on ebay.
That thing logs, is fast, deadly accurate and with the free 'bluetooth gps' on the market you can even use it on the HD2

The AGPS thing on WM and then booting into Android is a myth, there's an extenvise work being done to make AGPS work on Android for our HD2s, but they have not managed to get it working yet.
Android on our HD2 simply doesnt have any commands to load AGPS, and the chip itself doesnt save any data. In the remote case it saved anything, there's nothing on the GPS Driver itself to read it
Quick tip to get your GPS to work:
Load Google Maps, let it try to get a lock, if after 1 or 2 mins it doesnt get any lock force close the app, turn off then back on the GPS and reload Google Maps. If you still cant get a lock, let it sit for at least 5 mins, then Force Close it again.
after that it should get you a lock in less than 10 secs.
Easiest way to FC it is enabling the "hold back to FC app" option on CM builds.
