HTC Touch sucks battery too fast - Touch GSM General

Dear participants,
I've got a question concerning my O2 branded HTC Touch (an Elfin, I guess, because of 128/256 RAM/ROM). I took it with me on a camping holiday to Italy 2 months ago and charged the battery with its standard ac-adapter. The latter was connected via a power strip. After I had charged it, I noticed that the battery went dead fast; it only lasted for about 18h in standby. The phone of my girlfriend (a Nokia 30something) had been charged via the same power strip and the battery wouldn't work at all afterwards.
So my first guess was that somehow the power strip was broken and as a consequence probably charged the battery "wrongly". Back at home I replaced both batteries with new ones. Since that point, the Nokia works perfectly again, but my Touch still only works for 18h even though there is new (original) battery in it.
Any suggestions? There is no mod whatsoever installed and it is the basic WM6.1 system that I am using.
Thanks in advance!!!
TheTick

Thread moved to Elf section.

Thank you!
I've always confused the two and did not know about the Legacy Devices subfolder.
One piece of information I should add is that my second idea was that my ac addapter was broken so I charged the phone via usb with my computer which, as you might guess, did not effect any difference.
Any ideas? Thank you!

I've downloaded the acb Battery Tester and found out that power usage is about 300 mAh. This seems to be to high when being to what other users have posted (around 170 mAh).
After a soft reset (after haveing installed acb again), the power consumption fell to 225 mAh which is better than what I had before but does not seem to be normal anyways.

I too have the same problem.Even my reading in acb battery monitor are an average of 225 mAh.Does anybody have a solution?
PS:Im using spb shell.

What is it without SPB shell?

i guess spb shell + overclocking was the problem.

Is that because you have disabled that and it is now running at normal? It would be nice to know so that it can help other people in your situation.

Hey you two,
MY touch does not have any extra software or verclocking going on, so I figure that it is defective because of the power cord. Do you think that is possible? Should not the power adapter filter currents that are too high for the mobile?
Cheers...

Battery is a lot better without overclocking and spb mobile shell.

I use OmapclockKeep and I set the following clock modes...
Idle = 50
On = 200
I use dsixda Onyx 6R13... this is a good and fast rom...
Battery life 3 days...

Atom Life Battery Issues

Anyone experiencing unexplainable battery drain on their Atom Lifes? I recently did a hard reset then re-installed the following apps:
Pocket Informant 8
Pocket Plus 4
Hikeyboard
Phoneweaver 1.2.1
Smart Text
Worldmate 2007 Standard
Stow away keyboard driver
E-Wallet
List Pro
My ROM: WWE_RC2170507B2
Can it be one or a combination of my apps is causing this drain? Please help.
Right now, with regular use(phone and sms) I need to charge twice a day!
Thanks,
Bree

Try to discharge the battery fully. then charge it. or the batt maybe old na. You may need to replace it, there are many good 3rd party batt available. just search the net
thanks for the suggestion! actually cleaned the battery contacts(read this from another post), feel there's a slight improvement. will try to drain the battery completely, and see what happens.
Yes, more than likely that your battery is dead and you need a new one. I just replaced mine
My battery life is decent, once I started keeping the screen brightness on a lower setting it helped a great deal.
Close software after use.
Hi
There is no issue about battery if i use it for basic phone and 30 minutes wifi browsing each day. GPRS browsing may consume too much power.
Do not use WorldMate if not required. HTC Plugin is 100 times better than it if you want only weather temparature.
Dont install too many softwares. If you opened any application try to close it completely eitehr with O2connect bar or from Running Programs in Memory section of Settings.
My O2 Atom Life uses around 40% battery power each day with basic phone use (1 hours talk) and 30 minutes wifi browsing and few other simple tasks of shorter usage.
Its exactly what they say....... Results may vary...lolz
i have o2 atom life .. if hot pda hence cannot charge.. but if pda normal (not hot) hence charge normaly..
why??

Battery: normal behavior or hw\sw failure?

Hello!
I noticed very unpleased behavior of my Shift and I am wondering whether it is my Shift's problem or it is some common problem with some driver, for example?
I have configured power schemes to hibernate my Shift when battery level at 10% but it doesn't work due to (as I understand) incorrect information about battery charge level.
When there is around 40% battery level displayed my Shift suddenly turns off and it looks like battery is fully discharged.
First point is that it is boring... I really don't have any idea how long my shift will be working when I am at the meeting and also such sudden power disappearing it is not so good for windows and for hardware.
I thought I can use some "battery calibration" feature which usually present in notebooks but I can't find it on my Shift.
Does anyone have idea what to do with it?
Regards,
efrost

My Shift is 2 or 3 weeks old (I suppose that battery also should be 2-3 weeks old...).
Not really understand about the bios. I didn't found there anything I can use to tune somehow the battery.
I see here already 45 viewings... Friends, if you don't have such problem, just drop here a comment that you don't have it, so I will at least be sure that I should go to a service with my Shift.
I bought a second battery for my shift and it when it got to 10%, it suddenly lost all power and powered off. (It wasn't a power saving action). My original battery didn't do this, and gradually dropped to 5% at a normal rate.
So I think it's down to the battery.
Maybe time will calibrate the expectation of the batteries behaviour, so the problem will be calibrated away.
Although this calibration will have to be shared between two batteries in my case, so I guess the calibration will never be perfect for either battery.
I don't have any problems with the battery behaving as you've described efrost. Can I ask how long it takes to get to the 40%? IS it giving you the full 2 or more hours of use when it shows 40%? If so maybe it's a calibration issue with the s/ware? I have noted my bettery is performing better now than it did the first week. Like most I guess it has to be conditioned over a few cycles of charge/dicharge to reach optimal. I'm getting around 2.5 to 2.75 hours web browsing/odd email on wifi (strong signal tho) before it hibernates.

Just measured running time from 100% charged battery to the suddend turn of it was just one hour. :-\ Just before it turned off Windows was showing 56%. Then I plugged it in and turned on... now Windows is showing that battery fully discharged.
Looks like I should send my Shift to a service centre.
Apart from the fact no two compressed Lion batteries have the same exact specs ( Manfs are pushing the sp here!) We have what we have!!
Just 6 years ago I thought constant use of playing a DVD on a laptop for 2 hours was good!
You cant compare this to a Winmo device with the hardware included, until someone comes out with a mini Naquater genertor for these things, we are stuck with SIZE+INCLUDED TECH is inversly square to Battery life!!!

[Solved] Battery usage

So im trying to figure out where my battery is draining to... I cannot go a full day on a battery charge and its really annoying at night it jsut dies and plus i cant really do too much on it for fear of battery drainig itself. Is there a way.. i can check to see what might be taking up battery
Wifi off
GPS Off
no 3G in the US
Bluetooth Off
Push Mail off... (though am syncing 3 mail accounts every 2 hours... minimal mail though)
Internet usage 30 minutes (besides, weather stocks)
Phone usage .. about 60 minutes in the day
Gyrator on
General usage.. games, tinkering etc (60 minutes... hey its still relatively new)
Appreciate the input.
Strange..
I've got two mail accounts, talked for 15 minutes with a bluetooth headset (been connected all day).
From 06 in the morning until now at ten in the evening I still have 7 bars on the battery. (three in the TF3D)
Consider doing a hard reset and set up stuff and see if that helps..
After tinkering for a couple of weeks, I hard reset and just put back on what I want. I also used Tweak HD which has a few tweaks to lengthen battery life. It made a big difference to me.
Orinigally it had drained in about 18 hours, afterwards it went slightly over 40 hours.
this is strange - i use my phone alot and it easily lasts 2 days
have you tried replacing it? when i bought my first diamond it was faulty, replaced it and batteyr life changed
also try flashing a stock rom on again and see what happens - less than a day - defo not right!
diamond v hd
had 3 diamonds, battery was lucky to last 10hrs, ate 2680mA battery packs like jaws ate boats!
HD, charge 1 every 2 days.... huge improvement... would love it to last longer, but its a million times better than the diamond and thats all that matters...
HD battery life in conclusion, is great, and i do hammer my phone usage!
I'm seeing similar battery issues as the OP. I barely make it through a 12 hour day on a charge, although I get a lot of e-mail on 2 accounts (one checked every 15 minutes, the other every 2 hours). In an effort to track down battery drain, I downloaded and installed HomeScreen PlusPlus and find that at rest with screen intensity at 60% my HD draws 150 mA, with the screen dimmed at 10% it draws 70 mA, and in standby (blank screen) it's drawing 30 mA. When the data connection is active, it draws between 250-300 mA, and when using the phone with screen on about 400 mA. I figure that with those numbers and a 1350 mA battery, 10-12 hours is all I can expect. If anyone else is monitoring their battery draw, I would appreciate seeing your numbers for comparison.
Oooh this is a good idea...
anyone else done homescreen++ to find battery drainage.. im going to get to it this weekend...
Have the same issue.... I have nothing special installed and for some reason it drains very fast on basic features.....
Same issue here
Recently I've been getting less than 12 hours out of a full charge. I've uninstalled a few things and turned bluetooth and wifi off and today it seems better with about 80% left after 10 hours
Vaguely considering a hard reset if the problem continues...
have fixed certain aspects now using the new version of Tweak HD
For our benefit.. could you please tell us...
1) your version of Tweak HD
2) WHat did you do to improve battery life
Thanks
Progress
So I installed Homescreen++ to be able to monitor my battery utilization... and im averagin 150mA to 350mA with it being closer to 300mA most of the time... no wonder I am getting 10-12 hours of battery life.. and this is with the device not doing anything.. except cehcking mail accounts.. NOTHING else...
I really need help with this.. every night at around 9:00pm.. i am without battery and its driving me nuts...
short of a hard reset... what can I do to monitor what programs or processes are taking up my battery?
I really feel your pain. I must recharge during the day everyday. I've ordered a second battery, but it hasn't arrived yet. I've done all I can do with HD Tweak and Schap's Advanced Config, even turned the screen brightness down further to no avail. I don't want to hard-reset, but I'm going to give that a try this weekend. Before I do, If any of you experiencing good battery life has a few moments and is willing to install HomeScreen ++, please post your numbers to compare to ours (mine are in a previous post). The download link is:

It can easily be uninstalled through "Remove Programs" later.
Thanks in advance for your help; I am so enamored with this amazing device that I can't bear to give it up!
Battery life much better than my Kaisers...

Apparently Batti uses a lot of battery (ironically).
I've just replaced it with Ariel battery and will let you know how it goes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364278
I'm not running Batti.
I have been through an Apache, a Blue Angel, a Hermes and most recently a Kaiser before springing for this amazing Blackstone. All my previous devices made it through at least a full day before requiring a recharge.
My ROM is 1.14.405.3 and Radio is 1.09.25.14
I'm thinking of springing for the HD, I currently have a Hermes. Battery life is a major concern of mine, and on my Hermes I had to purchase a larger battery with the extended back plate.
Does the HD turn off the screen when not in use or is it on all the time? Also how does it do with WiFi on?

Bad Battery! - Possible cause?

Hey guys,
First of, YES I USED THE SEARCH FUNCTION .
My battery life is absolute horrid right now, and I tried everything.
I tried out different roms, every radio, deleting programs, hard resetting tons of times. I even bought a new 1500 mAh battery but it was still crap.
Battery log says my device in standby mode with the screen turned of uses -70ma, when I turn my screen up it jumps to -320ma, and when idle on the screen for a few sec it goes to -200 ma, but when I browse through stuff again it goes to 3xxma again. When I surf on the internet it picks up to 450-500ma.
Now, this morning with the 1500 mAh battery fully charged I played a few games of XTRAKT, few texts, 1 hour of music listening and 10 minutes of being on Opera through a HSDPA connection. It was down to 45%.
This isn't the normal rate the battery goes down at right?
I use HDtweak to manage my connection and put it off after a minute so it isn't that I keep dataconnections open. I never use bluetooth or wifi either.
Could it possibly be that it's the charger of the device? I perhaps have the feeling that it doesn't put enough juice into the battery even though the green light led goes on to indicate it's full.
Some feedback would be much appreciated cause it's put me on the edge of selling my device, which would be a shame cause I'm really fond of it (except the battery ofcourse ).
Thanks in advance!

P.s. I am from a pda background, so it isn't that I'm expecting too much of the device or comparing it to a normal cell.
May I ask what you searched, as there are 3 or 4 active threads on battery drain right now?
Hi
Had same problem.
Try to browse a storage card if its very slow You must format it and it will back to normal.
very strange but its working.

General battery drain yes, not the possible issue of a charger though. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. .

I'll try this, I have noticed that today my storage card won't be read by my computer, so perhaps this is a fix for the lousy battery issue.

Hi Antrak,
Touch HD has the longest battery life of any similar 'phone. See e.g.
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/1...-the-rest.aspx.
Either your battery is not charging correctly, as you say (try it via the PC USB cord?), or you have two dud batteries in a row (very unlikely) or you have a bug in your m/board. 70mA in standby is too high. It should be <20mA with only the 'phone on in standby mode, providing you are not moving from one cell to another all the time, and have decent signal.
One other suggestion. Drain the battery completely to zero, then recharge it to max. This should reset the internal battery meter. But don't do this too often, as it ages the battery faster.
If none of these work, return the 'phone for a m/board replacement undere guarantee.
I have the same problem... After charging for 10 hours, my batt shows 55% only.. and last 1hr on STANDbY!!!
IMAGINE! charge for 10hrs juz to get to use for 1 hr.. im disappointed by the batt.. im not sure if HTC is gona let me exchange with a new one or do I have to buy a new batt..
try check your sync..its active all the time or not..
if yes..
find the threat to make a fake account for sync, so you can active it manually.
so your battery will stand more longer,
about charging..
me also facing the same problem..
need to change it more longer to get full battery,
but
if i change in my car,
no issue
very fast
i thing charger issue..
but i bought original set..
??????????????????
Okay I've charged my HD through my pc with a USB cable and formatted my SD card like a other user said. Gonna see how it holds out today. It could very well be that some chargers have issues.
My experience with the Touch HD says that when charged with a USB attached to a computer the battery life is a lot shorter than charged through a wall socket.

This is always going to be the case. Quickest way to charge your device will always be through your wall socket and with your device turned off!!
Same battery issue.
i recently purchased a new touch HD (T8285 telstra version) and am experiencing the same horrible battery issues. it takes more time to charge it, than i get use out of it.
i've tried multiple batteries, and am in the process of trying different ROMs.

Indeed, here's an illustration...
Image1:
Charging via USB takes longer. Consumption and therefore charge current is erratic after the battery level reaches 50% when charging via USB on my HD. So the battery fills up to about 60% of its capacity by the time when the battery level is reported to be 100% and charging stops.
Image2:
When charging with an AC adapter this is not happening and the capacity is fully utilized. This is also quicker.

That's strange. For me it's quicker if the device is turned on. When it's off it takes around 8-10 hours to charge but when it's on it's alot quicker.

If your device is on there is always power outage especially with programmes running, whilst if your device is off, there is no power drainage so device should charge quicker.

Latest official rom with alot of software installed. But it doens't make sence to me either. It's logical for something to charge faster when it's using no power (off) then when it is using power (on).
Combine battery threads ???

Can these be combined into one place and stickied, so we can get a clear picture?

I have a gut feeling from what I'm reading, that HTC have had a bad batch of batteries or charger circuits in the HD - in which case the best starting point is to call their service points and ask for help/replacement, instead of spending lots of time on other remedies. The symptoms described have lots of commonalities, and the HD is normally an excellent beastie for battery usage.
Thanks for all your help, ladies and gents! Your work is much appreciated.

Heya,
Don't know what it is but my battery life increased a tad. Am running Dutty's X3.0 with the 1.32.x.x. radio. Watching a 1 hour xvid dvd rip (no conversion) in coreplayer on full backlight with no HSDPA on, wifi or bluetooth takes away 20% of my battery, which is acceptable.
Don't think it's the SD card format though, it might be that I never have the activesync process on anymore by setting it to manual update and closing it (it otherwise keeps running.)

Kaiser's battery drain so fast after dropped

After being dropped while charging, the battery of my Kaiser just use almost a day (previously from 2 to 3 days).
I installed acbPowerMeter to measure power consumption and it shows an unbelievable value: 4294967mA
When plugged into the charger, the power consumption back to normal (I think), between 90-275mA. I wonder if Kaiser power circuit is broken or not.
Who have experience please give me an advice. Thanks!
Hi, if you've dropped your device you should check the connections to the batery. Try pulling out the batery, check if the "pins" are aligned, check if you batery isn't cracked.
Other thing that might have happened is that if you install new software it may drain you batery, i had the same problem after flashing and was only solved after getting a fix from the chef.
Thank you for reply me!
I checked the battery connectors and tried different battery (borrowed from my friend), so the result is still the same. I did not install any software before and then.
Hello, I have same issue with battery drain. I don;t know if it was droped because I just bought it used and battery is draining in one day. I tried another tool called Mobadi, and it saying that my Kaiser using 90-200mA. how about you?
90 -200mA is normal draw. Your battery is losing capacity over years of use, thats normal.

...normal draw during screen on and active use...
with these older devices, there are too many tiny things that can go wrong which cause weirdness.
1. Testing with a known good battery (NEW does not equal 'known to be good'-- I had two new batteries which would not even take a charge, followed by a new NON OEM battery with a low capacity cell inside! they use some undersized cells probably for pricing reasons... sort of like sticking an AA battery in a C cell shell. Not really sure what you can do in that case...)
2. Hard reset and see if the problem persists before doing any more troubleshooting.
