[Q] a question about Kernels - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

hello i am actually new to android, and i just fell in love with it,i am using
- Energy.Leo.23678.Sense2.5.Cookie.Aug.18
- mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense RC1.5b
- radio 2.12
i have a noob question and i tried searching for an answer but i couldn't find one, i'd appreciate it if someone could direct me to a thread that answers my question
i read somewhere on the internet that i can download something called Kernel or a zimage and copy it to the android folder on my sd card so that i get a better performance from android on my phone, my question is what is a Kernel and how can i get it, does it really make any difference?
another question, i have somewhat a low call volume sometimes,so should i change the radio or would downloading a new kernel help me get a better call volume?
sorry if the questions are dumb but i am new to all this
thank you

The kernel is the software that allows the linux system (android or ubuntu) to communicate with the different hardware pieces of your device. The main step of android on the HD2 is development of the kernel. As the devs work on the kernel they release new versions. You probably read that updating your kernel would help performance.
I personally do not update the kernel myself. As the various builds are updated, the chefs will incorporate the latest kernel updates. As long as you are updating builds from time to time, you don't need to worry about updating your own kernel.

Hi,
I'm running mattcfroyosense1.6b-ppp this uses kernel michyprima 2.6.32.9 #70
There is an update for this kernel michyprima 2.6.32.9 #70 (r8)
How can I add this kernel to my Andriod? It is easy to put the Zimage file in my Android folder, but how do I add the .ko files?
Under the Shubcraft 1.4d install I could just add those files to the Android\root\system\lib\modules folder but in the mattcfroyosense1.6b-ppp I don't have these folders?
Thnx

You can just copy the kernel and overwrite the existing one in the android folder. Then you put the appropriate drivers in the matching folder of the root file in the android folder. To be completely honest With you, from my experience, you are much better off waiting for the chef to upgrade the build and use the included zimage(like mentioned above). You will have much less problems that way.
As far as the volume is concerned, buy louder volume hack from the market-it is a must have app and gives you alot more control over different aspects of the volume for various parts of the system.

Thnx for your reply.
Can I add the drivers to the rootfs.img then?

There is usually a root folder in the android folder. If you explore this folder (i.e. Root/system/lib/modules...), you will be able to drop the modules that come with the new zimage over to of the ones that are there'. Then when you start android it will load the modules you placed in the root folder.

Run the batch file and it will add the apps where its needed.
If it asked to hit a key click D and A when needed.
Zip up the 2 folders in YOUR-ROM and flash the rom if you get errors try re-zipping the rom again and install.
Future updates i want is this.

HELP
Ok android guys I am over at SDX since I'm a moment guy but I have been really wanting to have a Android Kitchen just like we have for windows BuildOS. Looking at a few roms for the hero, moment, evo, and droid to me its looking like its the same basic set up for all roms.
My friend and I have been making a CLI kitchen but we would like to have a GUI screen like BuildOS.
So Im asking for some help with coders to help make this.
How we have it set up right now is.
One folder for the ROM you want
Another folder for all the apps you want in it.
if you want a custom kernel.
then it will make all the required files and ZIP everything up.
then you can flash it in recovery.
I want people to select what device they have
what apps they want
if they like a rom all the roms to that phone. that are updated every week.
Im willing to go around looking for roms for the phones if people can help me get this program up and running.
Can some people help? I want this to be a great as Build OS for use android people.
I'd like to have the app coded in html so that as the roms update it is a super easy fix. I have a folder on my web site with a lot of APKs that I can get links to also free apps no paid. And Im willing to even download even more if needed. Please help I want this to be the greatest kitchen ever.
First of all thanks for your hard work, I'd really like to see a kitchen like the Ervius Visual Kitchen for Android.
I'm no programmer, but if you need any help testing our whatever just let me know.

That looks like a good start! Very similar to the EVKitchen for WM. I did notice though that in your how to section on the first post it says to place the ROM you want to flash into the system folder, but there is no system folder that I can see in version 0.1.5
I have APPS, OLD-ROM, KERNEL, and YOUR-ROM. No system folder in the kitchen.
if you extract your rom you want there will be a meta-inf folder and a system folder take the system folder and place it in the old-rom folder. I just added a new version of the kitchen to have my friend look at and if so then you should be able to select a droid with a few roms and a evo option also with some roms. i will be updating more as i find direct links to rom not on sites like rapid share or mediafire places.
DC13
At this time im going to just focus on samsung phones since im not getting a lot of help from any one but samsung people. Once i get done with the samsung part depending on what i have option wise ill do droid or htc.
If you can code it would help me a lot as there are only 2 people and we really want this.
hope i can get this set up
I can't code to save my life, but I have a samsung phone (captivate) and volunteer for a tester if needed. Would love to have this.
Evo people are very helpful and they just put up an online based kitchen this could be helpful to that cause
ya i saw joey's kitchen go up about 2days ago. im trying to get him to help with a few things.
we did get the moment all set up now its just time to work on other phones. so for the next little bit to day i will be getting download links for a few more phones and add then to it. if you can help post up download links to roms. mediafire type sites some times have issues so if the rom uses it some times the rom wont download.
Ok so I was able to get some EVO/Droid/HERO roms/radios in this kitchen still would like to have a GUI screen but for now this will work. Uping tonight should have it out for tomorrow reason it takes so long is because im in the middle of the ocean on deployment.
just a question. can i add apps to automatically be installed into the ext partition with apps2sd
not at this time. thats going to be in the near future. we are trying to get a base of a few phones then start working on others
alright, thats still brilliant. keep up the good job guys!
Ok every one its out try it now.

[BUILD] MIUI Stock 11/05 English Released [Free beer and women new chinese 11.05]

MIUI STOCK BUILD PORT 11.05 PPP
Free beer and women HD2 Porting Thread
This is the latest build of MIUI for the HTC Touch HD2. It's relatively stock with a few minor changes for our HTC LEO. MIUI build includes all changes made from previous builds and optimizations for all of the new changes including:
iphone style launcher
iphone style icons
iphone style settings [much better organized system settings]
iphone style contacts, and screen effects
innovative new lock screen with music player
loads more MIUI goodies that have impressed me as a user
The default kernel is based on the EVO Kernel yes I changed kernels. The changes made for the git update have done wonders on backlight stability and battery drivers. There are some issues with the kernel (see post 3).
If the current build proves to be very stable (which it has been for me so far) I will include hastarin's r8 and some language builds. The translations for other languages are not available yet.
Quandrant Score 1614
Release Notes
Stock build, blocking ads is not in this release, but the process for advertisement blocking is relatively easy.
Creates a 1 gig data.img; first boot will take some time.
Rooted: superuser priveleges (SU is included)

3g/HSDPA
5 mp Camera
Camcorder
LED status notification
Keypad notification
bluetooth
USB mass storage
G Sensor WORKING
WIFI TETHERING (THANK YOU DARKSTONE & CASS)
Facebook sync
The build still needs some testing; specifically in the bluetooth. If someone can report with their findings that would be ideal. If there are any other things not working in this build, let me know ASAP
How to install
Install is relatively easy:
1. Extract the 11.06.miui.lang folder [including contents] to the root of your sd card. Since it has a unique name, you won't have to rename it as I doubt any other builds has a unique naming ID.
2. Ensure you have at least 2 gig of space on your sd card (the data.img created is 1 gig which is NOT included)
3. Once the copy is complete, go to the android folder, run CLRCAD.exe and then HaRet. You will be taken to the HTC screen for a bit (about 10 minutes) and the rom will load.
a. If you get some strange error on boot, make sure you are using a new data.img
b. If the build still doesn't boot, reformat your sd card
c. If the build won't boot after a & b, please let me know in the thread
4. Skip through all android settings on first boot (you can set these up later).
5. The default keyboard is google keyboard. You can change this by tapping and holding a text area (sms, internet, facebook) and changing input settings to any keyboard you have preference to. Future builds will have htc_ime but for now android keyboard is good. I also prefer smart keyboard.
If you have a previous build
Ideally you should be able to drag all the files from the 11.01 build (including startup.txt) and keep your first data.img. Please verify if you have any issues with updating this way. If updating you may have to edit the startup.txt file in the following field if you're using the 10.30.miui folder:
set cmdline "rel_path=10.30.miui nand_boot=0"
or alternatively you don't have to overwrite the startup.txt file
your boot should load
The HD2 rom I am running is Duttythroy (and I have always ran duttyrom and it always gave me an excellent android experience) with 2.15 radio. It has never gave me any issues at all plus it is a good windows mobile rom [/shameless dutty plug]

SD mount issue
If you are having an issue with mounting/unmounting your microsd card, try this (again thank you mccmjoon76 for the solution)
1.you have to down load the terminal emulator from market place
2.open it and type "su" and press enter. allow super user access to it (mine kept freezing so i backed out and re started it. You will need to type "su" again and a window should pop up )
3. then if anything was done right you should see a "#" sign were your about to type the next line.
4.then type "mkdir /data/sd" make sure there is a space between the mkdir and the first /.
5.if everything worked right then nothing should happen except it moves to a fresh line in the emulator .
if you did everything right you should be able to go into settings and unmount your sdcard from there.

Additional Programs Necessary for Optimum Performance
What's difference or advantage over other miui builds available especially the one I am using now 3.0 beta with 3 launchers
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
It's a stock presentation of miui. Infinitybiff was the only build that really had a stock interface that was fast and relatively smooth, however due to circumstance and time constraints, he couldn't do it. After testing a quick 10.22 port I decided to release a 10.29 build. It is stock, pretty fast and extremely stable.
Also note the build you are referring to I also direct users to different builds that prefer a themed ui rather than a stock one.

ok dude thanks for feedback. i will try it as i love the miui look. the stock version works very well as you can do virtually anything with it. don't like the stock clock though as that white thing looks odd. i am not a fan of the lock screen logo that gift box with ribbon. lol
oh that's changed...a lot has changed in miui
I remove the white clock and use tajm and battstat...maybe something to add in the next revisions of this build it is relatively bare bones. But as bare bones, you will love the changes from like 9.30.10 to 10.30.10
I think when its translated, you will all like the weather program. It looks like the htc sense weather but I'm sure it will be optimized immensely

Beginners help with cooking please

Hi all,
so I am new to the world of Windows Mobile - use to be a Symbian fan and then got the HTC Touch Diamond recently due to my Nokia dieing of old age.
I want to learn how to cook ROMs so I can customize what I want as I want. I tried sending Da_G a PM as he seems to be quite knowledable about cooking - although he seems to be MIA (his last post was a long time ago) and I have not gotten a reply yet.
So now onto some questions which are probably stupid, but I do not know the answers to.
So I have an HTC Touch Diamond which originally comes with Windows Mobile 6.1, I am using osKitchen as it seems really popular and it looks easy enough to use. I followed the guide which is here but it does not give me the complete info I want.
So in order to cook a ROM you first need to have an original ROM (so in my case an original ROM for the HTC Touch Diamond off the HTC site?)... I got that(RUU_Diamond_HTC_WWE-AFK_2.03.421.2_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.51.25.26_1.09.25.23_Ship.exe)
Then you open it up with osKitchen, it extracts it blah blah blah.
I then get a popup about a new ROM has been imported and it asks me if I want to automatically configure the project to use the ROM. I click yes.
Then it says the device profile currently selected uses a pre 6.5 kernel, module allocation space will be extremely limited. Do I want to auto enable module to file conversion for a list of files? Now I read somewhere that if you are using pre 6.5 kernel you want files, if you are using the 6.5 kernel you want modules? I am not sure what to click here as I want to upgrade to windows mobile 6.5 ...
So do I enable the conversion or not?
Then it pops up with the project settings, under SYS Packages I can see all of the phones services. OEM packages, I am not too sure what that is... One thing which is worrying is that there is a red circle with an X in it infront of OEM Drivers... If I hover over it, it says there are issues detected in the OEMdriers. They all seem to be errors detected in the registry and the registery key path entry is invalid due to 2 adjacent backslahes? So is this normal? What do I do?
Also there is a block "RecMod" under OEM Packages. What does that do and what is it used for?
EXT Packages, over here we have all of the applications which will be preinstalled when you flash the ROM? I know how to add .cab packages to it and it seems simple enough. Once again there is a RecMod with a tick box?
ROM Tweaking I have not really bothered with yet, would first like to learn the basics. Anything I should know about in ROM Tweaking?
Now back to SYS Packages. This is where you update/port/upgrade ? to newer windows mobile versions? Now I think if you are changing between window mobile major build versions or what ever you want to call it (like from 6.1 to 6.5) kernel changes perhaps? You call it porting? Anyways, so now I want to change to the latest build in WM6.5 .
I took a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650783
Now it seems like the first 3 digits indicate something, what exactly I am not too sure. Perhaps someone could explain?
There is HTC HTC which is made by HTC I think and possibly meant for HTC?
Then there is COM 2 and LG. Now since I have an HTC do I have to use the HTC one or not? Also it seems some have newer / higher WM builds? So why are there these many different builds and what difference does it make as to what they are? Also what are the COM 2, 3 and 5 ?
Anyways, I downloaded the HTC one. Now I want to port / upgrade to it. It is WM6.5 now as well. So I click Import, then goto Import a new WM build. Select the appropriate build dump, then click on start importing. It will import it and then what? Is there anything else I need to do?
I am assuming go back to Project Settings and under SYS build change it to the newer one which I have just imported? Although is this really all I need to do? Will I now have a proper functioning cooked ROM running WM6.5 with the new build?
Thanks
If you're cooking a 6.5 rom, and you have a 6.5 native kernel (there should be one out there, unless you're using a cdma diamond), then DO NOT RECMOD (convert to files). If you have to use a 6.1 kernel, then you have to recmod a lot of modules. Look around, there are threads with native kernels for many older devices. I'm not going to dig up a link, I'll let you find it. Just get the Diamond native kernel and use it.
If you have a cdma diamond, then I believe that people use the cdma raphael native kernel, but supposedly it's buggy.
OEM Drivers has an .rgu that usually has a few mistakes in it; that's probably the error you're getting. I wouldn't worry about it, but the kitchen may tell you which line the error appears in, and you can fix it.
As far as rom tweaking goes, all you need to know is that manila sucks, and Sense is blight on humanity. Good luck and have fun.
Real Beginners Stuff Please.

Hi all,
so I am new to the world of Windows Mobile......
I want to learn how to cook ROMs so I can customize what I want as I want.....
So now onto some questions which are probably stupid, but I do not know the answers to......
...... I followed the guide which is here but it does not give me the complete info I want.....
..... What do I do?
..... What does that do and what is it used for?
..... would first like to learn the basics......
..... so now I want to change to the latest build in WM6.5 .
..... do I have to use the HTC one or not? Also it seems some have newer / higher WM builds? So why are there these many different builds and what difference does it make as to what they are? Also what are the COM 2, 3 and 5 ?

Hi,
So many questions
I too am new to the world of Windows Mobile, and have learnt how to flash different ROMs sussessfully.
I have spent my time reading hundreds of threads about flashing, and having a go - the tutorials and threads have been great source of knowledge.
Now I want to start cooking a ROM and things are different..... I have read thousands of posts and tutorials and watched videos, but I haven't found a real Noobs method of: starting, choosing a kitchen, finding a ROM, importing the new bits, and making the changes. It all goes wrong right from the very start.
Choose a kitchen, and then what ? (exact steps, not just "find a ROM you like, then..", etc. etc.)
None of the threads I have read seem to be able to give the nitty gritty to start, they all skip over it.
I have a Kaiser, and am in a similar position to you, there isn't a native 6.5 kernel for the Kaiser, so how do I make a 6.5 build in a kitchen, when I don't have a 6.5 build to start off ?
Please can someone give a REAL NOOBS guide to starting off.
Thanks & Regards,
It all comes down to the basics. If you do not know what a kitchen actually does, then there probably is no point in cooking to start of with.
Kitchens available today make a lot of things heaps easier than they were several years ago.
Try starting with this thread.... it is not for your device, but you get to learn the basics and actually understand what happens in the background.

This may be new to me, but it also was to EVERY cook there is, or has been at sometime. We all learn something new at some time, and all I was asking for is a little starter to get me going. I realaise it isn't a point and click exercise, otherwise I would have made a ROM by now, and not asked for help. I didn't write the software for the kitchen, so I don't know how it works.

Thanks for that, I hadn't seen that one, but unfortunately, it also doesn't give the procedure for starting with a WM6.1 ROM and adding/changing files to end up with a WM6.5 Native Kernel.
Please, give me a break.

Using search you would have found the native kernel:

Thanks, but I already have them. They are "files" not a "stock build" that the cooks tell you to start with. Again, do I need to start with a "stock build" of WM6.1, or can I use those WM6.5 "files" instead, if so, what am I missing from the "stock build" that I need to continue ?

Yes, It's a piece of code, usually written in assembly language (for speed of execution), that sits between the hardware devices and the system drivers and programs, to translate what the programs want, to what the hardware can understand, and deliver the results from the hardware, back to the programs.
It is the core of the Operating System, and is the first thing that is loaded into memory when the system boots, and stays there until you turn off the device (unlike other programs that are loaded, and unloaded as needed). It is loaded into a seperate and protected area of memory, where it executes processes, handles interrupts, memory management, process management, file management and I/O management.
The User, cannot interract directly with the kernel (or hardware), but has to go via a seperate program (usually containing a GUI), that can send it's requests to the kernel for processing. After the kernel has processed the programs requests, the kernel gives the information to the program, which then outputs it to the User.
Is that enough of an explanation ? Sorry I had to simplify it, but there are a lot of other noobs here that may have gained some knowledge from that, so rather than blow thier minds with acronyms and babble, I thought it best to explain it simply.
Now, are there any more questions you want me to answer, before telling me what I need to know, to understand the first few steps in cooking a ROM ?

I don't think what you're looking for exist, persay. There are several kitchens out there to choose from. The only thing that helped me when starting out was frequenting the thread of the kitchen that I was using. It's in the kitchen's thread that you'll find all the nitty gritty answers you're looking for and other people that are in the same boat as you, and more experienced users of the same kitchen who would probably be more apt at answering questions about specific kitchen.

Nice quick knowledge drop on kernel. It sounds to me like you already have a better grasp on things then some!

Thats because there is no stock 6.5 for the Kaiser. Not sure what "those WM6.5 files" are, but you do need the drivers for your device. Any leaked build will not contain those.
Dumping a stock rom will give you insight as to what is actually in the rom. When you then download one of the leaked builds you can you will recognize the files and hence see what needs replacing in order to upgrade.

What kitchen are you using? As there are obviously slight differences as to what is where.
I would just get a ready kitchen and study it.

[Q] Android ROM Htc Touch HD

Hi
Is there a ROM Upgrade (ANDROID 2.1 or 2.2) for HTC TOUCH HD?
I know there are some files like haret.exe but i like to do it with this
program: rom update utility
( you can search it on google images)
I have upgrade my HTC TOUCH HD to htc touch hd with sense
and now i like to do that but than with android!
Is that possible????
Thanks a lot
and so sorry for my english !!
no, currently there is no complete stand alone nand android rom for the blackstone since it is not yet stable and many features are not working (like bluetooth or 3.5mm). but afaik it is being worked on so there might actually one day be a full android rom for the nand instead of the sd card.
Moved thread to android section

Hey,
I'm sry about my question (and my english, just got "school-english-skills" from Germany, a few years ago ), tried to do the search but found nothing I'm able to understand...
A good friend of mine has a HTC HD Touch (Blackstone?) and wants to flash a "stable" Android Version on it. I'm able to flash the HTC Magic, Wildfire, Desire & co. but I'm not able to understand what I've got to to, wich files I need and what I should do with that.
Could anyone help me ? Linked files that I need and a short instruction would be very very great !
(Please do me a favour and don't say something like "use search" and so on, I need to understand what I have to do with wich files )
Many thanks in advance
There is no flashable android rom for Blackstone yet
exactly. as of now, there is no android rom for the internal flash (nand) to replace the current windows mobile os. but there are still ways to get android working alongside winmo, by simply putting it on the sd card.
basically, what you need is a rom, haret and ts-calibration+startup.txt.
for the rom itself, there are dozens of different roms around this very forum section. look for the most recent ones and compare them by the features needed. some of them hardly have any support for the blackstone hardware, when it comes to camera, sound, BT, 3.5mm jack, calling... and are purely for fun and apps, some others are more suitable for everyday use. make sure to read a few posts of user feedback to get what you want.
most roms come with their own haret package (the winmo program to boot android), which, like the rom itself, needs to be extracted to the sd card root.
ts-calibration is the file needed to store the touch screen calibration, so you don't have to align it yourself, which can be tricky in android.
startup.txt stores the boot commands, which can be altered to your needs, have a look at a few of them and pick the best one (which seems difficult at first, but you can search any command in there to find out what it means). some come with overclocking or different values which can speed up or slow down the device, it set wrong.
and, to sum it all up, here is a tutorial thread describing the whole installation (well, copy) process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959831
it is not completely up to date, but you can use the same tutorial, the same haret, ts-calibration and startup for other, newer roms, like blazn 2.2.2 or whatever you want.

[Q] Customizing existing NAND ROM

I 'm using [July 24th] [Sense 3.5] Energy™ -.¸¸.·´¯ Sense 3.5 build that just works! NAND ROM that best suits my needs. However I saw [11 SEP] Barebone CM7 v2b and came to idea to make similar thing with this rom for my personal use.
I would also like to implement NativeSD ROM, with that difference of leaving system folder on NAND rom. To be absolutely clear here, I 'm using linux OS and I 'm quite familiar with modifications that have to be done, so I don 't ask for help with that.
I would like to know is it possible to deploy nand rom to android emulator, and than use android emulator for development purposes for further customization, or is there some other tool that can be used for this? I did install android kitchen and I not very pleased with that.
When removing or adding system or market apps is it just enough to add/delete them, or are there some other things that I need to pay attention to?
Also when removing apps how can I see framework dependences to remove them as well if they are not needed anymore by other app?
I hope that is not to complicate to understand what I meant with this topic.
Thanks in advance.
The answer to my question about framework dependencies of a certain *.apk file that I want to remove, can be found in AndroidManifest.xml of that same *.apk file. Although manifest file is encrypted, information about what framework libraries are used can be viewed with aapt command (exp: aapt l -a someapp.apk).
I suppose this is the right way for doing this. Please correct me if there is a better way.
