camcorder causes /system/bin/mediserver crash - EVO 4G General

I'm using a rooted stock Froyo ROM. Whenever I launch the camcorder, or launch camera and switch to video, /system/bin/mediaserver crashes and begins using 100% of the CPU until a reboot. I tried wiping cache, wiping all of the camera app's data, but nothing works. Problem is 100% reproducable.
It started the first time I went into camcorder. I hit the record button, and all the other pressable buttons on the screen disappeared EXCEPT the red record button, but it never started recording.
WTF. How can I fix this?

Bump
I have the exact same issue. Were you ever able to fix it?

This happened to me, had a corrupt picture file on SD card. Deleted the bad pic and all was well again, best to remove all picture files from sd card and start over saving new pics to card.

having same damn issue

it is what another member said. a bad pic or something on the phone. i copied all my stuff off the sd card and then formated it. then put things on bits by bits and it fixed the issue.

This worked like a champ. My wife's EVO had the exact same issue. We dumped the 100MEDIA folder and we're good to go. Thank you!

Phone reboots after launching Camera in Android 2,1

Hi All,
I have a problem where my phone crashes and reboots when I launch an app that uses the camera in any way, for example layar, barcode scanner, camera etc. This only happens in Android 2.1, I've tried various ROMs and always the same issue. I've tested Android 1.5 and there are no problems with that at all.
I've noticed the crashes only occur when I'm on battery power, it never happens when the phone is plugged in so I cannot get logs to see what is going on, unless someone knows a way to get the logs from a crash.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem and if so, if they've found a resolution to it.
Since updating with the OTA 2.1 update I have been experiencing this problem too. Phone reboots when it uses the camera, Layar, Yelp, AugSatNav all seem to cause the problem.
I get this problem too, with the camera, and also sometimes when I put the volume down it freezes and reboots
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I've got the same problem. Restarting when launching apps using the camera.. Im glad that's not a HW problem but "only" SW bug.. I hope
It could (and probably is) a radio issue....Happens on the N1 and Desire if you try to use the camera too and seeing as the GPS,Camera both are dependant on the radio id say that is it! Find the radio reccomended with the rom you use and flash it( Beware of orange users being locked down though, you need a specific radio)
Just to add that I'm getting the same problem too running FroydVillain 1.2.2 and baseband 6.35.15.14, should point out that been having the problem for quite a while on a multitude of ROMs :-(
I'm not - did you full wipe?
Multiple wipes...
try 1.3 i guess
I had this problem when I was on stock 2. 1 I would recommend rooting and flashing froydvillain.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Tried multiple ROMs and multiple Radios with no change :-(
Unless theres a second secret wipe button hidden in recovery I don't know what else I can do :-/
try to disable "automatic brightness"...

Hi,
I have had this problem since i went to 2.1 also, i have also flashed several rom's since villainrom 12 and have even used rcmix 1.0b which is a great 2.1 imo.
Have flashed 2.2 roms, and i am still having the same problem.
This is how i can replicate this problem and how it occurs, to the letter.
1.Bring phone out of lockscreen.
2.Open camera.
3.Take pic, in dark or light lighting with brightness on any setting.
4.Save pic.
5.Close camera.
6.Lock phone and wait for 10 seconds.
7.Bring phone out of lockscreen.
8.Open camera.
9.Phones lights all go out and the hero name flashes up onto the screen.
10.Full reboot.
This happens everytime no matter what.
Some things to consider.
The phone will never reboot if it is plugged in to a usb / electric plug Charger and is actually charging.
The phone will remain on and will carry on taking pictures IF you don't close out of the camera the first time around.
No task killer was installed on my phone at the time of this test, although i have had task killers before with the same results.
Lighting effects and brightness can sometimes have an effect on the ratio and probablility of a reboot, with brightness on full in a dark room being the most probable.
I am using the newest froyd rom 1.4.3 although i have tried pretty much every rom out there, I NEVER have this error when i installed a 1.5 rom which does not have apps2sd (weird that) which tells me that it is NOT a hardware fault.
I am using villains no logo kernel 19mhz - 691mhz
63.18.55.06PH_6.35.15.14 Radio
HTC Hero on Orage UK.
IF anybody can shed any light on this rather annoying matter resulting in this problem being erradicated will earn my eternal respect and a big clock. : )

I can confirm that this isn't a bug on every install of 2.1 or 2.1 as I am unable to replicate the issue as described. Also if you've tried mutiple software and the bug is occurring across many that would suggest it is something hardware related or you are not performing a full wipe. Have you tried backing up the data on your sd card and formatting that then putting back only the necessary data (pics / music etc)?

I originally posted this issue and the descriptions from everyone else with the problem match mine pretty much perfectly.
I've taken all info off the sd card and performed a complete wipe of data, ext and davlik before formatting the sd card. I've put the blank SD card (apart from the ROM I'm about to flash) back into the phone and flashed. After config and before any new apps are installed on the phone I launch the camera and within 4 attempts at start the camera the phone will crash. This has happened across every 2.1 ROM I've tried, but doesn't happen on 1.5 ROMs.
Using the stock camera app? Have you tried without installing any of your own apps at all?
This is very odd. No matter what I try I can't get the camera app to crash. Though I am using v2.2 of android. Have you tried official 2.1? Vanilla and Sense?

Yep, it crashes using the stock app.
I've tried a rooted version of the offical but not the actual OTA update. I've not tried vanilla as I don't really want to run vanilla on it.
I've managed to take some logcat logs of the problem happening but there's nothing really specifc happening over a few crashes that would point to anything. .
I'm going to try to unroot my hero and downgrade to stock to start again. Just have to find a way to downgrade my bootloader first so I can put on the original RRU. I tried to downgrade before but got an invalid bootloader error.
The camera crash doesn't really affect me day to day as I don't really use the camera, where it is annoying is it stops you using apps that use the camera like goggles and layar.
Ahh - so its not the camera app that is crashing but other apps too which are using the camera. Very odd.
And FYI - you don't need to touch your bootloader - just change the driver in windows to My HTC instead of HTC Bootloader and the rru will work.

I have formatted and re partitioned my sd card to a T and it still occurs and thats with everytime i install a new rom, i don't use titanium i go the long way around every time and re set up all my programs, I know i can replicate this error like i said and like i also said this does not occur in 1.5 roms.
I have also have this problem with vanilla, modaco's new one, villain rom, rcmix, froyd, it appears that ever since the phone was updated to 2.1 there is a problem when using the camera app.
I have tried to install a rom and replicate the issue without installing any apps at all and it still persists, the only thing i can say is that it doesn't happen when i'm either on 1.5 OR the phone is charging?
It sounds like the the phone is requesting access for use of the camera and then not putting back what it requested in the first place, like a cache or something, and it simply make the phone reboot when it is called upon again.
I don't believe it is a hardware fault, i know this sounds like wishful thinking but the phone does not have this error in 1.5 roms. Thus, it cannot be hardware. Simple!
Also a logcat does not show anything, i was only able to replicate the error once whilst my phone was plugged in, it just won't do it again, and when i posted my findings on villainroms bug report section, a few of the lads still didn't know what it was so i don't know what else to say.
I'm due for an upgrade in October so for me at least it's not that much of a deal but i'm planning on giving this phone to my daughter so it would be good to get it working for her.
Would save me a lot of earache.
If u need to know anything else then please let me know, oh and i am using a class 2 sd card, which i have been unable to change, however just today my girlfriend has just had a class six delivered and her old one will be up for grabs so i will test with that too. Has anyone else tried with multiple cards??? Also how do i find out what boot loader i am using (recover) as maybe the problem resides there.

Thats right, its any app which accesses the camera.
What could be the correlation between connecting the charger and not connecting the charger, could that be a power issue and the battery is delivering too low a power output on it's own to run the camera? Hence it works with the charger plugged in ?? Either way i think that is the only real clue there is to be honest, unless your phones still restart when the phone is plugged in, in which case it's not much use.

Video Recording has stopped working - and causing other issues too

Hello -
(Please move this if not in the right forum)
It seems just recently I have been having issues recording video in any format.
I am using the Rooted .6 Stock FROYO ROM
Taking pictures is working just fine but when I try to open up the Camcorder it does some weird stuff:
1) After hitting record in the camcorder the time and flash option go away and just the record button is left on the screen - the phone becomes sluggish and takes time to get back to the home screen and then go stop the camera app
2) if it does start recording hitting stop then sends me to a black screen and then the phone becoms sluggish and I have to force stop the camera app
- Removing video files from the SD card seems to solve issue #1 and brings me to issue #2
a full wipe in recovery does not help - issue occurs as soon as phone is ready to use.
Any suggestions are welcome - and I am curious if anyone else is having this issue
Thanks
Mine is doing the exact same thing. I tried reinstalling the .6 update but that didn't fix the problem. I'm taking mine back to the Sprint store.
My 4G speeds suck on .6 but were awesome on .3 so i have another problem on top of the video recording.

However it was happening on .3 also but I just assumed since it wasn't a final build that it would be fixed with .3

I see... this whole time I thought it was the netarchy kernel I flashed that caused it, so I guess I was wrong. Before this happened to me, I recall that I was messing around with the flash settings for video recording... I remember the last video I recorded was a video in 720p while I was toggling the LED light on/off. Then the next day I tried to record another 720p video and it just stopped working.
same here. I was able to fix it by reformatting the SD card.
My first thought after reading the details of the issue was a slow/faulty SD card.
Sounds like kauaiboymo may be on the right track.

If I format / Use a different SD Card
Video recording kind of works but when I try to end the recording the camcorder app freezes up - then after I have recorded a couple of videos the camcorder stops working again.
But I do have some interesting info to add:
Last night I flashed the 8/4 Nightly of CyanogenMod 6 that I had NAND Backed up - I wanted to flash the new RC2 Nightly dated 8/19 from last night
so when i flashed back to the 8/4 I tried the camcorder.. In CM6...
On the 8/4 the camcorder did the same thing ( Recorded some video choppily and then froze up when I hit stop)
I flashed the new nightly over it... and tried recording again
It works just fine....
Soo... I will let you guys know when I flash back to the stock rom if its fixed in there too now...
Flashed back to stock 2.2 and the problem still occurs but I have noticed something else that may be the cause..
When taking photos only one of my led flash seems to be working.
Maybe this is what is happening can any of you experiencing the same issue see if that is the case for you as well

Same exact issue here.
What happens is that after you open the camcorder (or open the camera and switch to video), even if you dont record any videos, /system/bin/mediaserver crashes and begins using 100% of the CPU, causing extreme sluggishness until you reboot the phone.
This bug report seems to match the issue:
http://code.google.com/p/0xdroid/issues/detail?id=137
I fixed this on my phone.
A few days prior I had edited /system/build.prop and changed:
"media.stagefright.enable-player" to "false"
This seems to be what caused the problem, because once I set this back to "true" and rebooted everything was working again.

[Q] Camera/Camacorder Functionality

I jus received my a500 tab, been using it for a couple of days. trying to use the camera functions and the apps keep force closing and the image window stays black. Is there a fix or do i have a bad tablet.
Try a factory reset?
Go to settings, privacy, factory data reset, hopefully you haven't don too much since you got it, as this will wipe all your personal settings.
You can also try just clearing the data for the camera by going to settings, applications, storage use, find camera and select "clear data"
This generally fixes allot, or you can reset more (caches etc) in the recovery menu, you can find info on that in the dev section.
hope this helps!
Ive tried resets. no luck. It seems like there is a problem with the camera hardware. Has anyone else had this issue.
how do i access the stock recovery on the iconia tab?
Lost pictures
When ever I take some pictures I can reveiw them them with no problem. When I turn the unit off and turn on latter all the pictures that I had taken are gone. Any one else having this problem. This problem seems to have started after the 1.41 update. All picture taken prior to update are stilled saved.
Try manually updating the System firmware.
Having the same issue with saving pictures/files to external sd card. After a power off/reboot all pictures/files are erased.

To the OP - if it was borked out of the box AND you've reset it AND you use the stock camera apps then take it back - definitely a HW issue.

I have an issue where my time zone resets to default after restarting. I wonder if these are linked. Something with the tablet not shutting down properly causing settings or other things like pictures not to save.

Having Exact same issue. Prior to the FW update i can take pictures that get saved in External SD, without any issue ever after reboot. However after update when i take picture, i can see it in External SD card and review them. But after a reboot all new pictures get deleted.
My acer is rooted and running 141.07 com gen1.
EDIT: If i rename the pictures in external sd after i taken them, then after reboot they dont get deleted. Wonder if there some way to rename in batch or some app that can do that automatically?

[Q] Camera won't save first picture [SOLVED]

Here is my problem,
it all started when I switched form a 2 GB sd card to a 16 GB SDHC card.
At first i didn't even notice, but then i realized that when i open the camera and snap a photo, it plays the little animation minimizing the picture to the left bottom corner indicating that the picture is saved. Then i take another one...
Later i go to the gallery, and the first picture i took isn't there, but the second, third, fourth ....are there.
This happens when i don't use the camera for a few hours, and then turn it on. It just won't save the first picture. Its like it doesn't mount the sdcard in time for the first picture. I have no idea what's going on, and i missed some awesome pictures. Please help.
I am using JBoogie3 Blurry Ginger based on (2.3.4)Defy+
Edit: the problem has been solved, you just have to put CM7 on your phone
Perhaps quick reformat the 16 GB SDHC card would do the trick..
Backup first.
That was the first thing i tried, and no luck. I also tried the infamous hp usb disk storage format tool.
I also tried to clean the camera cache... no luck.
Cleared dalvik cache... had big hopes on this... and yes, it works, but it worked for a day or two, then reverted back to its "won't take first picture" self.
Tried fixing permissions... works, but just like above, only for a day or two
I am out of ideas, and i'll probably move to another rom, maybe the problem will go away.

Have a search about "mmcfix", the Defy has a problem with sd cards due to a malfunctioning kernel module. This is fixed in CM7, but may not be for your ROM. Ask your Dev if he has included it or not

Thanks for the info i'll keep that in mind, but i already switched to MS2Ginger 2.0
It's been a few days now, and it works perfectly, this rom is just amazing, especially the 720p stock camera recording, just love it.
Thanks for all the suggestions, hopefully this will be the end of this problem.
Final answer - CM7
Unfortunately, MS2Ginger 2.0 filed to save images about a week from the day of installation. And I had such high hopes.
After that I tried almost every MMCfix, patch, modules, trick and hack to try to achieve a normal working sd card, but they all ended in failure.
Since CM7 already has the mmcfix pre-installed, it was my last hope.
And it works. Been using it about a month now, and its still snapping and saving pictures like a boss.
So if you own a sd class 10 card, and have a defy, cm7 is your savior.

I tried using the zip files (I think I found 3 different versions), then applied them using custom recovery.
I also tried to put the required modules in manually, just copying the files in there right place, and I remember that you had to edit a file, so the modules can load at start up.

[Q] Camera app in official Oreo update has trouble saving the pictures

Hey guys,
As the title explains, since I did the Oreo update on my A2017G (A2017GV1.3.0B02), I got a weird issue with the camera app.
Every time I take a picture, I have to wait for 5~10 seconds for the app to save the picture on my phone. If I try to take another picture right away, switch to another app, or do anything else, the picture isn't saved at all...
It's really annoying especially when I want to rapidly take more than one picture.
The issue isn't present in any other app that use the camera.
Does any of you know how to fix that?
Thanks

I tried both, and both are having the same issue.
Tried to also disable or change options like quality or GPS, still no changes.
my friend's axon had that problem on marshmallow, i didn't because i bought it later and my phone came with nougat. now on oreo it happened sometimes until i reseted the phone (for other reasons too) and the camera app. i don't have any problems yet.
If it takes the image and the problem comes after, it's either the image processing or saving of file.
I reset my phone and formatted my card to try and avoid issues. Camera works great.
Screwed with work mode and fingerprints, now cannot delete saved prints. Grrr, need to reset again. I tried flashing Oreo back over the top of itself which worked fine but no luck fixing the fingerprint problem so I assume the issue is in saved data.
You can flash yours back over. Download the OTA update file from the Oreo thread and use it same as an SD card update. I always keep a ROM in my SD just in case I need to fix it. Put it in a folder and just copy to SD root if you need to use it.
Thanks for your help guys, I found a fix to this issue, so I'm sharing it here in case people need.
It's very simple; just go the app manager and delete the camera app data.
Now restart it and it should work nicely ?

What problem do you have with the finger print scanner?
I realized mine got a lot less sensitive and precise since I updated to Oreo, and fail to read my fingerprints really often.
Edit: nevermind, I didn't read your post correctly
What a PIA, had to reset my phone again to fix the fingerprint issue. Setting up from beginning again. This time I will only use two prints
