[Q] Any way to flash the microSD to FAT16? - HD2 General

Ok, I need to format a microSD card to FAT16. Everyone online asks for reasoning for why this needs to be done: I need to flash the BIOS on my EEEPC 1000HE to resolve a Windows 7 install, but for whatever reason at bootup the BIOS only enables flashing from FAT16 storage. All of my machines run Windows 7, and Windows 7 inexplicably removes FAT16 formatting altogether; it is not even possible with third-party programs.
Does anyone know of any utilities that can reliably format the microSDHC card to FAT16? I have tried SKTools' format but it only seems to do FAT32, even though the option for FAT16 is there it ignores it and does FAT32. The Format Storage card also only does FAT32 with no options.
Is there any hardware limitation, either in the HD2 or microSDHC card, that would prevent me from formatting to FAT16? Windows Mobile and the HD2 are my only hope for right now until I get ahold of an XP machine.
EDIT: I understand FAT16 limits volumes to 4GB.. I am wondering if this is the problem.

i would think so, yes. You can probably try some of teh advanced partitioning programs to create only a 4gb partition, but i would guess its still hit and miss, and im not sure if its even possible on removeable media, , probably far easier to get hold of a 2gb card or smaller. (Irony is i have a pile, i mean PILE of 126,256 and 512 meg cards right here, there must be about 60, from a place i used to work.)

How to format the Mini SD card

Hi guys
My 2GB Mini SD card is not working. I have a Trinity - Orange SPV M700, I wonder if anyone could tell me how to I fromat it and which FAT system to use?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I did try to use File explorer and looked everywhere in the Settings section.
I am thinking, maybe I need to use my card reader in the computer or do I have to buy a 3rd party program to do this?
Any idea
Thanks
Using the cardreader in your computer is fine. Use the FAT format, not FAT32.

Why not FAT32? I've been using a 4gb miniSD fromatted in FAT32 for months without a problem.
If You don't have a card reader or an adaptor for the Micro-SD You can do it via wm5 storage. FAT32 should be better than FAT.
I also had problem with SD card (2Gb). Then I used one program for formating Panasonic SDformatter an now I don't have problems anymore.
Link: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html
Try with this program.

As you may know, the SD specifications are not open but must be licensed and are protected by NDA's. Therefore I pesonally can't say for sure whether or not FAT32 is within the SDA 1.0/1.1 standard, but I would guess that it's not.
It's true that using FAT32 seems to work with most cards and controllers in the PPC world, but apart from eliminating the 512 files limit, I don't really see any advantage over FAT.
FAT32 is not a 'high performance' filesystem, so in terms of read/write speed it doesn't give you anything compared to FAT.
If you use a 4GB non compliant card, then of course you must use FAT32, since FAT only allows for 2GB.
So in short, unless you can't live with the 512 limit, I don't see that FAT32 will give you anything over FAT, and when you use FAT, you are sure to be within the standard.

Thanx for nice info, if that's true, FAT32 is the only option user may have when formating card, this limit is a way to small !

Please note that 512 is not the limit of the total number of files that can be stored on the card, it is the max. number of entries in the root directory.
The max. number of files that can be stored on a FAT filesystem is 65517.
thank you for clarification, is there a way I can already check in what format my card is formated?

If it hasn't been reformatted since it left the factory, then I think it's safe to assume that it's FAT formatted.
If you want to check, then put it in a card reader and look at its properties (assuming your PC is running Windows).
i'm using Windows XP, but in my computer my pda is listed as a windows mobile phone and if right click the storage card, there's no option to format it...what should i do ?

Partitions in wm?

Hello everybody,
Does wm support partitions?
So can I split up my 8 gb sd card into two partitions of 4?
Or does wm not support this?
Thanks!
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what for ?
E.g.
Partition one:
Haret > Android
Partition two:
Multimedia stuff + wm
or
Partiton one:
Multimedia
Partition 2
Program files and stuff
There is no need as both Andriod and WM6.x can see Fat/Fat32, which I presume your SD card is formatted.
If you want to separate your media from any programs you want to install on the sd card just use a different folder.
Plugging your SD card into you TP2 is the same as plugging it into your desktop / laptop whatever the OS.
Would you partition a SD card that was plugged into your desktop ?
If you want to partition the SD, try it and let us know... however i think that it will appear as 2 storage cards in explorer.
I will give it a try
It is possible but not usable...
I also searched around on the internet and it works
But I am back at one sd card since I find folders easier than 2 storage cards.

I know exactly where you're comin' from, man. After I get a 16GB class 6 microSDHC, I intend to partition ~8.5GB as NTFS ('cause I'd like the the max capacity to hold a full DVD DL disk) to handle larger file transfers btwn desk/laptops. And, I'd still have a whoppin' ~7.5GB to be used by the tele as FAT32...'just haven't made that microSDHC purchase yet, but I'd imagine it to be plausible.

I remember some time ago on Aximsite or another older related site reading how to format NTFS and use a Compact Flash card on Windows Mobile. I did it on my Axim and Ipaq at the time, and kind of remember it working.

I know. However, if there're two partitions, NTFS @ ~8.5GB and FAT32 @ ~7.5GB, then I'd imagine that Windows would see the storage card as two drives, while Windows Mobile would see the 16GB, storage card as ~7.5GB. Anyone, please, do correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.
This has made me wonder, too. Why does WM refer to "Storage Card 1" occasionally when inserting/unplugging memory cards...? It kinda implies that there is room for multiple cards at the same time...????
Chris
i partitioned my 16 gig hard drive and installed linksys on one partition so i can plug into my computer and dual boot from my phone...
i dont really see a reason to create multiple partitions to have the same function as folders (ie seperating media from doc, ext...)

You would not gain anything by formatting NTFS other than the ability to set NTFS permissions in Windows. A movie can be stored on a FAT/FAT32 partition with no ill affect on usability. Also, when you purchase any type of storage, the actual formatted size is usually smaller than the advertised size. So if you buy a 16GB card, you will most likely end up with around 15GB max of usable space. I would not plan on having 7.5GB of free space after creating a 8.5GB partition.

No, you'd also be able to support files larger than 2GB. And, I know it wouldn't be 7.5GB, that's why I'd said about (~). Prob more like 6.8GB, or so.

I know NTFS doesn't work on Windows Mobile. However, I would assume that if you were to make two partitions, one NTFS, and the other FAT32, the Windows Mobile device would show the FAT32 partition, while a Windows dsktp would show the microSDHC as two partitions, NTFS and FAT32. I've ordered a 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and I'll post my results after I receive, partition and format the card.
Okay. So've received my 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and have partitioned and formatted with Paragon Partition Manager Pro v9.0, and have...
Partition 1 - microSDHC N, 8.61GB NTFS
Partition 2 - microSDHC, 6.24GB FAT32
The device sees the FAT32 partition, as intended. Windows (Vista), however, shows only the 1st partition (NTFS) of the microSD, even when using the device in Disk Drive USB mode. Disk Management sees the FAT32 partition, but no matter what options I select, I'm met with
Code:
An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error...
At this point, I just need Windows to allow me to give the partition a drive letter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
in the start search bar type computer managment then go to storage/disk management select the disk and then right click and change letter.
thats supposed to let you change the letter i have to deal with this alot at work with all the network drives and my externals
hope this helps

I'd tried this believing that Windows only needed to assign a drive letter, but to no avail. :\

Example: You have a 16GB card; However it reports you only have 199MB
I have attached Panasonic SD Card Formatter -
You Must Choose Full Format

Final version will be completed around the end of March.
I have read a number of articles about not being able to reuse a sd card after it was used by windows phone 7. Does that also applied to those of us HD2 owners who are running WP7?
I have a 16gb card that is only using 4gb for WP7 because I formatted the other 12gb as fat 32 for Android.
Is there a way I can unformat the 12gb so that WP7 can use it. Or can I use the card and start all over by reinstalling WP7 and let it partition the card to use all but 200mb of the 16gb card?
Here is one of the articles I read about the sd card not being swappable:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372732,00.asp
This is the HD2 Forum
Do a Full Format using the Utility I have attached.
Ok i downloaded the file and installed it. but when i choose format it tells me that the lock switch is on. Iv checked and rechecked but there is no lock switch on my sd card adapter.
Please help?
Hmm
I have the specific problem addressed (199Mb partition on a 16GB drive)
this program does not address it, it just allows me to reformat the 199Mb drive :-(
I will use fdisk or similar to resolve myself - but it doen't look as if this app "does what it says on the tin" ?
Try HP Low Level format tool, it always deleted my partitions on every device without problems
Hi
Thanks for this wonderfull tool, I downloaded this tool, installed in on Windows Vista, it formated my SD card wonderfully and even displayed the total space available, however now Windows refuses to recognise my SD card, and when I reconnected the SD card, neither your app nor Windows recognises the device.
Any suggestions.
thanks you just downloaded.

Windows Phone 7 uses the SDCard and the NAND memory together as internal storage, in a unique partition (like RAID for PCs, something similiar).
If you format your SD Card, you have to reset your phone.
You don't have to use any special tool, just use diskpart tool within Windows from command line (diskpart -> list disk -> select disk X -> select partition X -> delete -> select partition X -> delete -> create partition fs=ntfs -> DONE).
I have a 16 gb card, came with my HD2. I have run XBMod rom since it all came out months ago, no issues with the rom or the card.
When nodo came out, I tried another rom, phone started rebooting. I tried diskpart, cleaned the drive, recreated the partition as fat32. Let WP7 format, no help. Any ideas?
Successfully formatted my MicroSD
Just popped it in my Nikon D90 and it asked me do you wish to format. I said yes. Done in few seconds.
For others who see this, if you have used your card with WP7 mango you need a newer Nokia to format the card, as it will be encrypted, and Windows woun't recognize it!

This seems to be the only way to format the card once Mango is flashed. I have a 16GB card, but it didn't get any fat32 partitions, and it isn't recognized in any OS I try it on (Win7, Linux, OSX, Winmo 6.5, and now a new installation of WP7 doesn't see it either). If anyone finds another way, that would be awesome.

[Q] I want my sd full... 200MB HELP !!!!!!!!!

Hi guys I have a problem installing WP7 and my SD card ends with 200mb of 8 GB
First: I read a lot of posts about 200mb , about fix sd card, about this issue, but is not clear for me. So I looking for people can help me , not to bother me and say me google or search it. This people don't have nothing to do than spend time writing useless words.
I have an HTC HD2, every time I install a WP7 ROM after the first windows boot/ start , windows let my SD card of 8GB in 200mb, lot of people know that.
I try, format and partition the sd card after and before installation.
Windows format the SD after the first set up, and after that I try format or partition the SD again, but not work.
1 st question: I can read with windows 7 the files in the SD card ...? if I save some music or data.??? May be an aplication or something can read / write the SD.
If the first question is "yes" ... I find tutorials with how to format the sd card to use android, but I don't want use android , I want only WP7 and leave my memory with the full size, and can read / write files, like music , word , excel, etc. files.
Trying to do that I flash the WP7 like 6 times today...
I want, can use my SD Card Billy G !!!!!! LOL
Thanks guys for any advice or solution can give me.
Have you tried to format your SD card with a digicam? First I saw also the 200MB on the card in the digicam, when I formated it with the cam I saw the whole memory of 8 or 16GB.
Regards, Olli2.
format the card using a digital camera...thats the fastest way to do it....
No, I do not think you guys understand what he is saying. I think he wants to format once WP7 is installed and continue using WP7. WP7 does not support hot swapping cards. Once installed and formatted, it cannot be messed with if you want to continue to use WP7.
I can format the card
Thanks guys ....
I can format the card after I install the windows 7 with the boot menu of Magldr , but when I start the phone again windows tell me the Memory card can't be read, do a hard reset or change the memory, for a compilant one and force me to turn off.
I try differents ways, format the memory card to one partition of 200mb and the other partition with the rest of the unformated card, I try format to one big partition, I do the hard reset with the volume butoms , and start my phone and the same problem.Format to FAT 32.
I don't have a camera with this micro SD card..., you traying to tell me the windows 7 use a different file system than FAT32? BEcouse the 200MB partition is FAT16.
1)What happends if I install windows with no SD card??? and at the end of all the first windows set up( means widnows format my SD card to 200 mb, I install the SD card full size in the slot.? could be work?
2)But somebody can make work windows 7 ( only no dual boot) with a full size SD card( 8gb 16gb) , and can read/write/play music, videos or text files from the SD card...? or windows don't let you use the SDcard, or may be another aplication can on the marketplace, can do it.?
Thanks for the help...
That's all very strange to me. Every time I installed a WP7 ROM my issue was trying to GET the 200MB partition. (I dual boot android/WP7). What I suggest is to format your SD card, and make it one big UNFORMATTED partition. For example, if you use MiniTool Partition Wizard (i use that) make sure it's unformatted (a green square) as opposed to unallocated (grey square). Then when you flash WP7 it should have all of your storage.
You need to have your SD card in there when flashing the ROM. If not, and you try and insert the card afterwards, it won't recognize it.

See my answer above.....What you are trying to do cannot be done because WP7 does not support removable storage.
Also, you must use Zune software to alter the size of storage available to windows for mass storage device.
I don't get what's the problem... Let's better make some things clear:
When you install for the first time WP7 on HD2, the system will format your SD card, it doesn't really matter what kind of partitions you had earlier, everything is going to be wiped out.
WP7 will make 2 partitions on your SD:
1. [~200MB] FAT16
2. [Rest of the space] Unformatted
That's the way it should be. The partitions aren't visible under Windows, with some registry hacks in Windows 7, the card gets mounted as a media player, where you can throw the music or pictures.
After installing WP7 on your phone, go to Settings->About and check the line Total Storage, if you say you have a 8GB card, then there should be available about 6.5-7GB ...
Of course, all these things are in the most ideal case, when your SD card is compatible with WP7..
In case you want to get back to Android and your card is not recognized normally, connect your card to PC through a card reader (or MGLDR -> USB MassStorage) and format it through SDFormatter (Freeware), turning ON the FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT under Options..
After couple of months trying to make WP7 to work on my HD2 EU, i finally made it, had all kind of troubles with different cards.
1. SanDisk 2GB Class2 (Bundled with HD2) - could install WP7, card was recognized, after one day of using and installing several apps the system stars to crash, random reboots each 20 minutes or so.
2. Kingston 8GB Class4 (Bought 2 weeks ago) - WP7 installs but can't get over startup configuration, it stucks, rebootings and Hard Resets won't help (tried a bunch of different ROMs)
3. SanDisk 8GB Class4 (Bought 4 days ago) - WP7 installed perfectly, no rebootings and everything works till now, some bugs are showing up, but most probabil it's just Software/ROM related stuff..
nickriley thanks for all the info and explain to me this issue.
I have a Sandisk 8GB, and HD2 EU too, can you tell me the registry hack I need to do on the phone to can use the unformated like a media storage like you say...
"The partitions aren't visible under Windows, with some registry hacks in Windows 7, the card gets mounted as a media player, where you can throw the music or pictures.
"
Thanks a lot !!!!!!
No problems.
I couldn't find the guide on XDA forums, and as i'm a new user here i just found out that i'm not allowed to post external links Check your inbox..
Used the device in this way just a couple of times, as i'm using WP7 as main OS only during the last 3 days, but it worked, can copy from device and to device also..
Is there's a way to increase the FAT (200MB) partition ?

Micro SD card wont be mounted by Samsung Tab a6

So I have a Samsung Tab a6 7 T280 wifi and I've inserted a MicroSD card (128GB). I've done this with the stock os first and I just got the message card can be removed safely. and it wouldn't let me mount it.
Now I've installed the Tinker V5.1 Stock Rom over it and it still happens. (wanted a faster os on it).
I can reformat the card with twrp to be ext4 or exFAT and it doesn't change a single thing. if I insert the sd card I get a quick preparing card and then instantly the message card can be safely removed. clicking on mount sd card in storage from settings doesn't do anything except prompt same message.
I'd try a different sdcard.
Okay, so I hope I can help, I have the SM-T280, I do not use Tinker ROM, instead I debloated my stock ROM and use an SPA kernel by @_mone. If you're trying to extend storage to your tablet, you'll need to use a PC to partition the SD card two PRIMARY partitions. I used on Windows MiniTool Partition Wizard (free), and I used a FAT32 partition and an ext2 partition. With the stock ROM/kernel I had problems using ext4 or extFAT which didn't make sense to me but it is what it is, and I used the app Apps2SD to handle all the work.
The main thing, you need to make sure your SD card has TWO (2) PRIMARY partitions.
Good luck.

With the stock ROM/kernel I had problems using ext4 or extFAT which didn't make sense to me but it is what it is, and I used the app Apps2SD to handle all the work.
The main thing, you need to make sure your SD card has TWO (2) PRIMARY partitions.
Good luck.

What about the Sizes? As in one partition 60 GB the other one also 60 GB ? Or the fat32 partition 1 GB and the ext2 the rest?

FAT32 is not for large capacity storage. Use exFat. There isn't much point in having such a large ext2 partition. It's incompatible with media transfer protocols unless you use a Linux system.
This device fully supports exFAT. I use a 64gb sdcard no issues.

I wouldn't think so, I'm sure it supports 128gb cards.
Just partition it into to halves. First partition exfat. Leave the other unformatted and see what happens.

partitioned into a 40 GB exFAT partition and left rest unpartitioned. Didn't change anything. if I pop it in the tablet I get a short preparing sd card notification then immediately an SD card safe to remove notification...
I'm really confused by this. The tablet is new so I doubt that it's broken but I don't know. Do you know if there's a way to check any kind of logs on Android like dmesg on Linux as an example to see what happens with the sd card?

It's best just try out another card to rule out the card.

Nobody can lend one for a few minutes? Or try the card in someone else device?

According to Samsung, the T280 will support a 256gb SD card BUT I know from experience that SD cards over 32gb can be VERY touchy. If you use a PC to remove all of the partition and then let the tablet try to do its own formatting and it still doesn't work, I'd say you have an incompatible SD card. That doesn't mean the card is bad but that it just won't work in the T280.
As an example, a Samsung EVO+ card (which can be found on eBay for $30) will probably work while a "no name" card from China, probably won't.

I always use Samsung EVO cards and they always work perfectly. Price per GB they are very reasonable too.
Scandisk ultra i find ok no matter what size
