Internal memory and sd use - Vibrant General

I was just wondering what the internal 16gb memory is used for. I haven't changed any storage settings yet, but it seems like most of my 2gb sd is used up (probably from apps), while the internal storage is mostly unused.
Also, my wife's vibrant shows 223mb free space (ram I'm guessing) while mine shows around 140, with less apps installed and no programs running according to atk. What could be making the difference?
Thanks!

Your apps have 2GB of space on the 16GB of internal. The rest is for pictures and such. Some apps will store their cache there as well. The external would be for like movies and music, at least that's what i use mine for.

Does it really only have 1g of internal memory??

I thought it was 4g for apps?

Yes it only has 1gb available but I have all the apps from my N1 (which was running out of space) installed and I still have .94gb left. There is plenty of room for apps.

15gb of applications

Looking in my Settings>Storage and Applications, I am being told I have 15gb of Apps. This can't be as I only have about 80apps installed.
Anyone have any idea about this.
Thanks.
Reboot and see what happens. Sure its not 15 gigabyte free?

Thanks for the suggestion but it is now 17.22gb used by Applications.
I suspect something is just filling up the space. I have a 32gb Iconia and a 32gb SD card.
After a bit more digging using DiskUsage App, it appears that in the /mnt/sdcard I have 17,779mb of System Data somehow!!
Any help much appreciated.
Something funky for sure, since even if all 16gb were free, it would of course be less than 16gb total. Out of box, the A500 has 12.5gb or so free, but 1gb can not be used due to Honeycomb's sucky memory management.

Regaining device memory

Hey guys, I just deleted a whole bunch of photos and videos (all saved to my desktop PC first) and my available storage space went from 4.8 GB to 8.48 GB, so only 2 GB short of the 11.50 GB total space which is great.
About the device memory, it says available space 1.61 GB. How much device memory does the phone come with and if I want to regain memory, how do I do that?

Lol, who cares, honestly? Noone answered and it went to page 2. In the time it took you to write your reply you could probably have made an attempt to answer my question. Everyone's a moderator..
Device memory is about 2gb. Its a seperate part where apps are stored, so if you want to regain memery there delete apps. But you will only gain about 400mb max and have no apps.

Thanks matey. Ah, in that case, I'm fine with 1.61GB if I'm only down from 2GB. I was more curious than anything else.
So all apps get installed to the 2GB device memory only, and the USB storage is only for storing media right?

No, lots of apps also store their data on SD.
Usb storage is external flashdrive if your using an usbOTG adapter.
The SgsII has mainly a 16Gb version although some have reported owning 32Gb versions. That comes down to about 1.8Gb for apps separate, and 11.5Gb for your data.
Some apps can be installed on the 11.5Gb partition. That mainly depends on the app itself.

Thats the thing, for what the partitioning table (PIT in Odin) is used.
On my phone:
aroung 500MB for the system
2GB for appdata
12.5GB for userdata
These are around 15GB, to be correct i must say 15GiB, because if you convert it to the normal space everyone is talking about, you will get 16GB.
(1GiB = 1,073GB)

[Q] 4GB or 8GB? and Apps to SD?

I see my phone says that its 8 GB on the storage page, but then why does only 4GB show up as useable? Is there any way to change this also is there a way to install apps to SD card?
As far as I know only the dev edition with an unlocked bootloader will free that 4 gigs up. The retail RAZR m has the internal memory partitioned. 4gig for the OS and 4 gig for user app storage.

So APPS2SD isnt working on retail one?
I haven't had any luck with an app for moving apps. I've just shuffled them with root browser.

The way motorola set up the storage directories tricks app data to be placed on the internal storage. Its named sdcard. Then you got sdcard1 which is your actual sdcard. Its easy to move your music, pics, videos or movies onto the sdcard. However large amounts of additional game data is installed in internal. Should you move the data to sdcard1, the games won't detect them (with bards tale being the only exception). Moto did this on purpose to get you to buy their other droid with slight hardware improvements and larger storage areas. Now, to truly move data to the sdcard, you will need to gain root and install an app called directory bind. Which allows you to move data over to the actual sdcard using directory path manipulation.
IIRC its the norm to store data on internal sd in android... Not just a Motorola marketing scheme

[Q] really full storage

I was checking out my storage since im thinking about trying some Roms soon. My 16 GB of storage is just about maxed out...it shows that I have over 10 GB wrapped up in this misc file. I've opened the misc file and there's a ton of junk in there that I have no idea if i can delete or not. Here's a screen shot of my storage, I'd really like to get some space back...apps, music and such I can deal with the room they currently command but the misc file hogging 10 GB is a little much.

I use clean master and sd maid. try these to free up some space
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm
I would recommend clean master as it is very useful and reliable.
I was able to free up some space by deleting files that I knew were safe to delete, craigslist, yahoo etc. I still have 6 GB wrappec up in these misc files. Does anyone else with rooted non custom ROM phone have this issue?

Tap on the misc and it'll display a break down on the storage used. It's sorted from most to least. See what trading the most s and see if you can get rid of it.

Sorry, not sure what "trading the most s" means...maybe a typo?
I did tap misc and it does display a break down, this is where deleted the files ive done so far.
Download manager had like 3 GB, I deleted those. Craiglist had some files and, zedge had files and there was a yahoo file that I deleted. I don't even know what these files are but I figured if they're files from apps I've downloaded then I can see harm of deleting them. The rest of the files within the misc tab I'm not sure of...

Damn spell corrector! It was supposed to be "taking" sounds like you have a lot of smaller files and folders, that makes it difficult. The total size taken isn't atypical though. I have a similar amount in misc.
Misc. Folder has your os in it which typically is around 6gb for the stock tw
no way around that but once it's cleaned up the best you'll see in that misc folder is around 6gb or so really the best way and only way to have multiple roms with safestrap and a 16gb phone is to have an ext SD card and have all your music and photos/videos stored on that
I have ALL my stuff on my extsd and I barely have enough room for two rom slots with only 2gb partitions each
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
Misc does not have your os in it. Parts of it are in your data partition which misc is in too. It does have data associated with your apps though so you can't just delete anything. You could and it wouldn't hurt your device but you would lose any data, game saves, etc, of your apps
I was curious reading this and I've got 10 gigs in the misc file too. I've got a 32gb so I'm OK but that's annoying if only 6gb is the os.
