I love swype for portrait typing, but it totally blows ass for trying to type in landscape...the samsung keyboard's way better
I've ALWAYS wished for a way to set different keyboards based on orientation of the phone at time of use
cool story bro.
I tried writing an ime to switch keyboards based on orientation for this exact same reason, only to find out it's impossible due to android's security

See if something like Tasker can do that. Haven't used it but you can automate a ton of things on Android.

Only the current ime can change to a different ime

I really don't think so. After unsuccessfully trying to do it myself, I did some searching to find that others have come to the same conclusion

Agreed, that would be great - I don't often type in landscape, but as a way to try to avoid this I use swype like a regular keyboard when in landscape. It only works if you go into swype settings and un-check "word prediction" - kinda sucks not having word prediction, but I don't like the way swype does it. Oh well - maybe someone can come up with a fix!

Is it just me or are you guys also realizing that swype is absolutely horrible on the htc aria. The aria has too small of a screen to be able to use swype well. Whenever I drag my finger to the next letter i cant see if im on that letter because my finger is over it and the screen is so small.
Just wondering what you guys thought about swype on the aria
Love it on the Aria. I am used to the small screen though, from my htc magic.

its not bad... i had it on my htc pure and the screen was also small, but i had a stylus on that which made things a lot easier.
I see what you're talking about. Fortunately I know where the keys are without seeing them so this isn't really a problem for me.
Love Swype on Aria, the point of using Swype is you don't need to look at the keyboard to type fast, which means you do need to know the position of the keys. I don't think it will make much different with a bigger screen since my thumb will still cover the keys I'm trying to type.
My only complaint about Swype is that you give up the voice-type feature when you use it. They really ought to reincorporate that feature, since it's nice to be able to take notes when I'm mumble, mumble, COUGH driving COUGH.
There. Now I've gone and done it. I've made Oprah hate me.
Regards,
Corporate Dog
EDIT: Oh. I forgot. I actually have TWO complaints.
I HATE how the recommended words pop-up is implemented. If I'm typing 'Bioware', and Swype recommends 'beware', I'd prefer it if my closing of the pop-up meant, "No. I don't care for any of your suggestions. Keep what I typed, as I typed it." rather than, "Accept the top recommendation."
I know there's a user dictionary in my phone, and I've certainly added to it, but I'm constantly using non-standard words.
They put the microphone back in the latest beta, which they closed like 3 days after they opened it.

Same here.
It does get annoying from time to time, but I find it much easier than the standard keyboard. Especially when typing ridiculously long words which swype seems to pick up without a hitch.
Yea, I find the lack of a microphone shortcut annoying, too. Since I use Swype with my index finger, I don't really have a problem with the screen being too small. Swype is supposed to be able to correct for errors, anyways, but I have seen the correction fail at times. Swype is still more accurate than voice, anyways, and you can always resort to typing it out if Swype doesn't recognize it, which I think makes it better than voice. It would be amazing if voice worked perfectly, though, I'd never have to type again.
Hi! I just had a quick question about the keyboard on the 1.2 devices. My wife has been asking me to find her a better keyboard for her MyTouch, saying that her current one sucks and she wants one that doesn't suck (I don't know what that means either).
So, what is the best keyboard for the 1.2 still on android 1.6?
probably "better keyboard"
Smart Keyboard Pro
I like it but it is very similar to the stock one. What complaints does she have about the stock keyboard?
My personal favorite keyboard would have to be swype. Coming in at second would be the HTC keyboard
I love the stock keyboard, second would be the HTC keyboard (attached.)
I downloaded and installed Better Keyboard. But it's doing weird auto corrections like when she types "no" and then hits space, it inserts the word "nothing" or "yes" inserts "yesterday". I turned off the auto correction and that "fixed" the problem, but then there is no auto corrections...
I'll install the HTC keyboard and see what she thinks.
Her complaint is that when she types really fast, some of the letters don't register (probably because of the no multi touch?)
Swype might be a good option. I'll try that
Thank you for the comments

On fascinate, the default android keyboard does not have the option to un-check. So, even if I installed other keyboards, only the default keyboard is on. Is there any way to disable the stock keyboard and use other keyboard that I want to use?
Thanks!
jus ordered my fascinate so still wait on mine but as far as I know you cant disabled but to switch it should be the same across the board on androids just tap ur text box then long press in the text box and it should pop up with ur options

In some cases, when you install a new keyboard manually (such as one of my favorites HTC_IME http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416), you have to go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and enable the checkbox next to the keyboard you installed.
After that, the instructions ksizzle listed above still apply.
Thanks!!! I do not have the phone with me right now, but I will try that!!
Coming from an HTC device, which has a keyboard that worked quite nicely, I was utterly disgusted by the horrible keyboard on this phone. Reading around a bit, I decided that Better Keyboard was the way to go, so I decided to shell out the $2.99 for it, and also downloaded a couple of the free themes. I now have a very good looking keyboard, which works 10 times better than the stock one.

It's called SilverBlue AndroidandMe. It's gray/silver keys over a medium blue background. It seems to fit well with the gray/blue theme that Samsung has implemented on this phone.
this is my first touch screen so what makes the htc and better keyboard better than the stock one?

The HTC_IME keyboard link I posted is pretty much the HTC keyboard with a ton of customizable options. And its a free download.

Ah darn, guess I should have hunted a little more. Oh well, I'm happy with better keyboard, and you can apply themes to it, for added value. For the record, I think it works even better than the HTC keyboard, but I'd have to actually try it on this phone to make a fair comparison. All I know is that I can type way faster on this one than I've ever been able to on a touchscreen phone before.

This May just be Another Rant Thread But Hear Me Out. If you Hate The Touchscreen Keyboard Lag on stock Transformer Keyboard then You Really Should Try some other options. I switched to Thumb Keyboard and although not Perfect It waaay Snappier Than the Stock Asus one. If you havent tried out other Keyboards you really Should. It Can make a World of Difference. Plus Thumb Keyboard is So Highly Customizable!

Troll. -_-
Don't really want to buy the Thumb Keyboard yet. I have Swiftkey and gave that a try. It lags badly with the stock browser, same as the ASUS and Android keyboards.
All the keyboards work just fine with Opera though (and they worked okay with 3.0.1 before the 3.1 update).
go to stock browser type in about:debug press enter. now go to settings and new settings will be there uncheck the first option... download and install thumb keyboard NO LAG!

I know this is off-topic for this thread, but I find it quite interesting how often I find people who used to type like I did.
As You Read In My First Paragraph, I Have Now "Out Grown" (Or, Morever, Forced Myself Out Of The Habit) Typing In Camel Caps.
The Weird Thing Is, In My Research It Apparently Only Becomes a Habit For Programmers. I Started Typing Like This At A Very Young Age, Probably To Make Myself Seem Older Than I Was Online, And I Always Wonder The Circumstances For Other People Whom I See Type Like This On Internet.
In any case, thanks for the tip. I'm getting a Transformer 5 days from now, and was looking on XDA in the meantime.
Just got this keyboard, completing changes the way I type on the tabet for the better
It's on sale at Amazon for .99 right now. There's still some lag, bit it's hard to notice while you're typing. Indispensible.

So you mean uncheck " enable opengl rendering in the debug options". I just did that and it is much better with and without the keyboard, also without thumb keyboard.
Trying out Thumb Keyboard, I can definitely vouch for the improved responsiveness in typing, even on demanding sites such as this forum. The lag is more bearable now, so maybe I could go back to the stock Browser since it has the best layout of all the others, IMO.
There is a new swype 3.0 keyboard available in beta that works great!

I'm using Tablet Keyboard Free. Takes awhile to get used to.
Has anyone pushed swype on to the Xformer ? or is there a zip that can be flashed ?
The built in ASUS keyboard has swipe typing available.

The swiping on the ASUS keyboard is absolute garbage compared to Swype. It might as well not even be there.
Trying to official beta doesn't work - get an error about unsupported screen size.
I haven't tried forcing the issue.

Too late for you now but the Amazon app store gave away flex9 keyboard which has swype functionality... in addition to voice dictation and handwriting.
swype feature is pretty good and works on the transformer.
I don't need a signature.
I have Swype and Dasur Slide it on mine and it is not a match made in heaven in the UK - as I have a conflict between the hardware keyboard and the software keyboard. It is very frustrating - as even though I have the software keyboards set to UK keyboards, this somehow alters the hardware keyboard to a US keyboard whne I re-dock. If anyone knows a way around this, I would be very grateful and the Asus trace keyboard is utter poo. I cannot use it. In fact I am not a big fan of Swype, I think Slide it is by far the best in its class.
I read a post here a few days ago showing how you could stop the dock keyboard being changed by the tab keyboard settings. Do search through the development forum. You need to move files around, etc.
I have Swype on mine but I don;t like it on the tab although it is great on my DesireHD. I use the Thumb keyboard which becomes natural very quickly.
EDIT
Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14600447#post14600447
Have the newest beta on mine as well, works great! What I tend to do is make use of the resizable keyboard, make ik smaller, position it on the right.
This way I can hold the tablet with my left hand, and swype with the right, without moving too much across the screen.
The fail in combination with the hardware keyboard is a shame, there is a solution, but you do need root, which I haven't got around to yet.

Cheers pal, it's fathers day and I am finally having a day to play with my new toy, so far the launcher has been changed and now it looks like I will be rooted by the end of the day. Didn't think it would last long unrooted.

I don't understand. I have Swype set as my software keyboard and am using the dock to type this. While I do get the annoying warning about setting the Asus keyboard when I first get things going, I haven't noticed any odd functions, or loss of capability. Am I missing something?

I don't have any problems either.
I think I did change something with the settings when I previously installed thumb keyboard (the @ was coming up as " with the dock keyboard) but I haven't had to do anything with swype.
Edit....I've not got round to rooting yet so I'm completely stock and using the uk layout.

The swype for HC with re sizeable keyboard work great for tablet in landscape mode.
I use Swype on both my Android phones and love it. A perfect present for Fathers day was an email saying that Swype had released a new beta which included additional Honeycomb support!
