Is there any way to remove the Vibrant's touch wiz text messaging apk and replace it with vanilla mms.apk? I really don't like the look of the Vibrant's texting and I feel like the Vanilla texting is much nicer. Is there any way to get the vanilla texting on the Vibrant?
EDIT: nevermind, delete this.

Title says it all.
I hate touchwiz. Looks to iPhone-ish for me. Now that this phone has root access, all that's left for me is to kill touchwiz and get over to no LED flash
PS. Been looking for an answer to this question, havent found it so Im posting here.
TouchWiz is great. The only thing that looks "iPhoneish" is the app menu which you can change to a scrolling list view.
You can load up launcher pro on top of it...and afterwards maybe it can be token out of the source code that samsung released and flashed on as custom rom.
That said Touchwiz doesn't look too bad..I mean the iphone didn't invent icons on a black screen...I had icons on my windows 95 pc and chose black background...must have been copying the iphone back in 1995 >.> lol
I have Launcher Pro Beta installed and I love it. It takes away all the ugliness of TouchWiz, while still leaving a lot of the great features and apps that TouchWiz has to offer. My friend was very jealous of how my phone looked like this compared to his vanilla android Droid. Especially the text messaging field.
I really wish there was a way to use the standard contacts, calendar, messaging without the touchwiz integration, using something like adw launcher is nice until you go into the touchwizish apps and then it feels quirky.
Waiting for standard android 2.1/2.2 instead of just changing the launcher
So is there a definite answer to this?
Adw launcher
Check out adw launcher its awesome and its on the market
I am using launcher pro beta right now and it is working great.

Don't know how you guys can hate on TouchWiz. Only issue I have is it's a bit jerkier than LauncherPro, but looks wise it's nice.
LOL when the phone was first released in the Galaxy S version i was like WTF SAMSUNG? why did you make the phone look like an iPhone and make the icons and app drawer look like the iPhones? it seemed very unoriginal, but after the Vibrant came out and they took the single home button look away and added the 4 capacitive buttons i liked the phone and one of the first things i did was get adw.launcher and i couldnt be happier
only thing that blows about it is not being able to use any of the new Samsung widgets but no biggie adw.launcher is the best replacement IMO. Its super fast, you can use Live walls and you can make your task bar and notification bar go bye bye for a cleaner sleeker look
ADW all the way!
Thought the same thing when I first saw the Galaxy (threw up in my mouth a little). Realized it was TouchWiz and I knew I'd put ADW on first thing. Problem Solved!

You can probably pull the APKs out of a standard vanilla ROM and push them to system/app dir to replace the touchwize apps. Just pull them out of a N1 rom or soemthing.
So there still hasn't been an answer to this. I have LauncherPro installed, and only 98MB memory available. Uninstalled, I have 140+MB available. I like how LP can have a customizable, infinite loop dock and all that. I like how its snappier than TW and how you can have a 3D "cube" style apps drawer. I just wish there was a TW style app drawer. I like the pages deal going side-to-side with customizable pages. I put all important apps on the 1st page, tools on 2nd, games on 3rd and rarely used apps on the 4th. I just don't like how I can't customize the dock and how slow it makes my phone (because it does and you can't deny it.)
also, how the heck do I "watch" a thread and make it email me on replies? I haven't figured out this board so much, but then again, I don't use my computer alot since I have this handy dandy vibrant haha.
You can customize the dock. Three of the four icons can be replaced (Not Apps). I replaced Messaging with Gmail. Check the full user manual (on T-Mo site).
ok, i have an evo now, LOVVEE IT, but also looking at picking up an epic and giving evo to gf. but the one biggest thing thats killing me on the epic is not being able to customize the bottom dock, i dont use messaging, i use google voice and would need that at the bottom.
is their any way to change those icons? (WITHOUT USING ANOTHER LAUNCHER, I like the touchwiz UI, and dont wanna use adw or launcherpro etc...)
I heard this feature was removed from the current UI. Apparently there were some problems with touchwiz 3.0, and they removed a few features to get rid of a few of the bugs..
Touchwiz on the epic is essentially stripped down compared to the Vibrant and captivate... although this may change with the 2.2 update..
so it doesnt have ANY way? not even with root? ah. that kills it for me, i dont even touch the messaging app, idk the last time i did...
I'm just curious why not use the messaging app las time i tried google voice it was too slow.
well i have multiple phones and GV is PERFECT for it, and yeah GV used to be HORRIBLE, but now they have push sms, so its pretty instant, and i cant text from my pc etc... the ONLY downside to gv is no mms yet. idk i just REALLY dont want a app on a dock that im never gonna touch..
I love my evo very good, no problems, honestly the draw to the epic for me is the touchwiz fetures, not so much the UI itsself, but the unique features. the speed and the screen.
just not sure if its worth going from an evo to epic
Touchwiz 3.0 does not support landscape thats why they used 2.5. You may be able to change this later on if a developer can port touchwiz 3.0 but then you would not have landscape support in touchwiz.
This is the 4th thread about this exact issue
Solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770529
Just download Handcent. When you hit the messaging icon at the bottom it will ask you if you want to use the stock app or Handcent (then you can check - remember this choice). Now whenever you hit the SMS icon (it will still appear to be the same...). It will open Handcent.

This might work for the other buttons as well, if you clear the defaults in said applications. That is done under the Settings > Applications, find the app and hit the "Clear Defaults" button.
How does using Handcent fix anything for those of us that want the bottom dock button to launch Google Voice?
Did you read the question?
Use launcher pro, u can add and remove icons/programs from the dock

Hey guys,
Im new to the forums but i've been trying out roms for a little while. First stock -> zapX -> rubiX blurry -> apex -> rubiX focused -> and now fission 2.5.7 (blacked out)
I liked apex the best but recently I was getting reboots. W/o changing the clocking or voltage or anything..
Any way, fission and rubix seem a little faster and I really like the fission download manager thing. Real simple.
I also like their version of the email app. Very nice.
To the point now,
The dialer is awesome (black theme with green highlights)
The rotary unlock is off the chain
The contact listing - im not a fan of the way the image thumbs are displayed ( looks choppy and the 3 side border looks weird to me)
During a phone call the facebook image shown looks to be a blowup of the tiny contact thumb. Apex used another sized thumb I believe. Way more aesthetically pleasing
The txt messaging in both fission and rubiX is not customizable at all! Not anything like the dialer or contact listing. I don't like how it looks as if im in MSN or IRC
I don't mean to offend any devs, I love you guys. And im not asking for features.
How would I combine the parts that I liked from each rom? I mean, is the dial pad in fission and rubix part of the theme or the phone app? Or is it part of the rom somehow? The contact listing is in the same window as the dialer but could I change the way it looks with a theme or ninjamorph or something?
Also the txt messaging.. I liked the one in apex WAY better. But I don't know if I could just grab the apk and put it in fission.. is it just an apk id replace or is it tied to other things?
Sorry for the massive post and obvious ambiguity. Thanks for any help.

Try searching the market for the alternate apps that you want. For messaging I would suggest that you look up handcent because it is highly customizable and you should be able to make it look how you want
As for the others, I haven't really looked for those yet, but if I find anything that might help you I'll post it
Can't stand handcent or gosms.. I just loaded liberty today tho and the messaging is at least black now. I can live w. that. I just hope that someone fixes the in-call pictures because they are all blown up and NASTY!

Hey Guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get the puzzle lock screen to show the puzzle piece that comes up when you get a text. Currently I have to unlock then go to messages instead of just having the shortcut right to the new message. I am currently running dl09 with blackhole 3.0, but I also tried with super clean .4 and it didn't work for me. I could be doing something wrong when I flash but it never worked for me ever since I flashed dj05 i believe.
Thanks for the help this forum really is a wealth of knowledge
Sal
Do you have the puzzle piece lockscreen installed? Most custom roms have the stock ockscreen installed. Since you are using black hole I would assume you knew to pick it during the customization. Unless you did not download and install through clockwork.

Sorry should have said that... Yes I installed the puzzle lock option through clockwork. Whats weird I think is that when i get a missed call I get the puzzle piece on my lock screen for that... just not for new text messages
That is very odd... Haven't heard of on notification working and the other not. Are you using a different app like handcent or gosms instead of the stock sms app?

Do you have the stock Touchwiz Messaging App with the speech bubbles? I know plenty of ROMs switch it out for the AOSP Messaging App, and if you don't have the Touchwiz's Messaging then the puzzle icon for text doesn't work. If by chance you do have it, then no idea what other causes there are.

AHAHAHA finally It Works!!! I had always chose to use the dark mms option on the blackhole build your own. I changed it to the colorful one and it is working!!! haha thanks guys for the help... I never would have guessed that that was what was making it not work. I just thought it change my text message color haha... I love this forum just wish I knew more so I could actually help others instead of just reading and asking questions lol.
Again guys thanks.

I feel like a much less spaced out messaging theme would be a better use of screen real estate....
Does anyone have any ideas how to just install or modify the "messaging" themes?
Thanks so much!
I didn't like this either - no idea why they did it this way. Even with system font set to minimum the whole messaging app in general looks huge. I just switched to Chomp SMS. Don't get the badges on stock launcher but that doesn't bother me much.
