That's right, blissful viewing on your VGA Athena. How?
Don't expect to run it in a full screen window, that's how. The CPU (powerful as it is) cannot handle native VGA 640x480 full screen encodes. Probably due to the many other things it has to do simultaneously.
For full screen 640x480, we need the ATI Imageon chip acceleration support, which as we all know is not yet available and ATI/AMD have not been forthcoming in helping CoreCodec in revealing the nature of their hard/software embedded implementation. Nuff said.
320x240 resolution with extremely high bitrates won't give you the sharpness a QVGA device can playing the same resolution.
On the Hermes with the ATI chip, they finally got a resolution/fix as there seemed to be some buffering issues regarding Audio (not entirely sure if these reports were accurate), so I've been playing with Audio codecs and lower bit-rates, to some benefit....but not enough.
The best 'in-between' results I have found till we get a fix for our Imageon hardware (if ever) is as follows.
P.S. I've tried playing with H264, X264, DivX 6.xxupwards, Mpeg 4 etc and various encoders from Virtual Dub and Guardian ... to DVDx and too many to mention to be honest (over 20-30 encoders over the last few years).
For movie clips or entire movies to look really good on a VGA screen IMHO and experience, you have to encode higher than QVGA but less than VGA unless like the Dell's you have a accelerator that actually work with TCPMP or Coreplayer. Our only works with the ATI software renderer, which is still miles better than any other option open to us.
So I now encode at:
Video: 480x320 at 850kbps
Audio: AAC @ 44100hz and 128kbps (if music video)
Audio:AAC @ 22050hz and 64kbps (for everything else)
I can only yield benchmark results of around 118% but
I've successfully played over 72500 frames with only 45 frames dropped!
Trust me..that is really good. 0 frames would be nice and very possible by encoding at 320x240 but the video looks to soft whereas at 480x320 it actually looks quite sharp indeed.
If you encode a genuine High def clip or movie at this resolution, the end result will look like the original HD clip or worst way, like a super-bit DVD.
1% frame 'droppage' = 725
45 frames dropped out of 72500 = less than 1/16th of 1% which = Bliss
You do the maths.
Depending on the source video, if it is full screen, so will the encoded video, but if it is in wide screen format, so will your encodes be.
For DVD conversion I got best results vs speed using (freeware) Handbrake v2.25 and Mpeg 4 decoder.

For individual files (VOB files), I use Any Video Converter (yeah, that's the name of the application). Same results.
For all other video files I love Smartmovie with the same setup as outlined above, except for the encoder..I use Xvid in Smartmovie.
I'll try to upload a sample video to rapidshare or something if anyone wants to view the quality and performance...but my time is somewhat limited at the moment.
P.S. The above mentioned apps are dummy proof and not too complex for noobs, so why not try it out and let us know how you get on.
Last but not least, in Coreplayer v1.1.1 or even TCPMP , if you suffer from lipsync problems, try adjusting
Menu/Tools/Preferences/Select Page/Advanced...scroll down and adjust the 'Manual A/V offset'. Mine is currently at:
-0.200 but depending on other videos I might have to adjust to -0.600...it works wonderfully (menu navigation in TCPMP might be slightly different to Coreplayer, but the option is still there).

I found that the DiVx converter from DiVx works brilliantly if you set it to 'mobile'... I dont get any of these issues that everyone else seems to have - I use the official DiVx player on the Ameo and its great full screen.

I had tried that some months ago and wasn't that impressed, but maybe they have improved it. What version are you using?

Hey Mark,
A couple of things that might work...try running your video's with your advantage plugged in..
another thing...if you have 16:9 video convert it into 532x300
that consistently gives me good result...
and last but not the least...try splitting your video into smaller files...none larger than 600mb
The player on my Ameo is version 0.88 andthe DivX converter is version 6. Hope that helps.
It rips straight from DVD to my Ameo SD card too.... quite quick. Although I am having problems with no subtitles at the mo the rest is fine.

Only 20.xxx fps vs mine @ 23.79 out of 23.975 Original
2) I Used Any Video Converter with fallenczar's recommended resolution for widescreen movies for full screen viewing
Benchmark Result 131.28% Excellent.
Resolution 532x300 (slightly vertically stretched, but very viewable)
only 9 frames dropped out of 3842! Excellent!
Superb fps playback of 23.920 out of 23.976
3)I Used Any Video Converter xvid codec!
125.11% Benchmark Result
Resolution 480x320
only 4 frames dropped out of 5690!
Superb fps playback of 23.959 out of 23.976
4)I Used Any Video Converter Mpeg4 codec. Visually not quite as good as xvid, but still very good.

Superb fps playback of 24.979 out of 25.000 Mpeg4 codec would not allow me to keep NTSC format & I was forced to use 25fps.
Sorry if all that info above is a bit confusing, so here's the bottom line.
I've tested the Divx Encoder and Divx Mobile Player.....sorry, but it's still seriously lacking compared to Coreplayer or TCPMP. Handheld profile encodes at low resolution unfit for VGA device if you're a quality freak.
Portable Profile seriously looks good. No doubt about it and so it should as its native resolution for encoding is VGA (640x480), but then you hit the performance issues related to non accelerated Vids on VGA devices.
Verdict? No good for Athena but probably excellent for quick encodes using QVGA devices. The Player is also only capable of handling AVI vids and the encoding specs had better match its Players ability else it won't play the file.
For Fallenczar's recommended Resolution for widescreen vids, I can only say..Nice & Thanks for the tip.
If you don't mind the original Video/movie being slightly elongated, you won't notice a performance hit at all. You'll even get slightly Benchmark results than by using my method. But the benchmark results is not the sum of its parts and should only be used as an indicator, not a 'actual playback' performance gauge.
Verdict? Great tip! I'm definitely keeping this in mind for future encodes of wide screen movies & Vids. Thanks again.
Lastly I used an application called 'Any Video Converter', but in all honesty, there are many others that can do the job as well and better if you don't mind the complexity of some of the more advanced apps. But as a quick solution, you'll be hard pushed to beat this for casual and quick video files conversion. For DVD encoding I'd definitely stick with Handbrake...it's bloody fast too and uses MSDOS and no fancy GUI for viewing the video as it encodes, hence it encodes a 90 minute movie in a third of the time of the entire movie. i.e. 90 min video encoded in just under 30mins.
As the results show in no 3 & 4, even though my benchmark results are slightly lower than with fallenczars resolution for widescreen format vids, it's hard to beat how little frames are dropped whilst retaing a visually HQ video/movie.
Verdict? I absolutely stand by my findings until someone finds a way of encoding videos at native VGA at HQ with virtually no hit on performance.
I want HQ with great performance. Don't get me wrong people, we can easily achieve benchmarks in excess of 500 - 600kbps but the quality of sound and video isn't worthy of such high end PPC's. We paid a lot of dough for these devices and I'll be damned if I can't get slick HQ video on the Athena. I refuse to get a dell or Archos or whatever just to accelerate video and games....if that was my priority I'd buy a PSP and a get myself another compact HTC Hermes.
Just wait till we get some support for our Imageon devices. Let the good times roll.

Hey Mark!
Since you seem to have loads of free time why don't you try converting your video to .mov, try it with a small 20-40 mb movie clip first..
if my memory serves me right then you should be able to get better results with it...though converion to mov if time consuming

I discovered that TCPMP can not play full screen. As I have installed SmartMovie which can play full screen movie beautifully, therefore I do not bother to try run TCPMP to play movies, just use TCPMP to play music with enlarged lyrics appearing at the same time along with the pace of music. That is a joy forever.

Possibly, if the encoding specs match that of the ones outlined in the Athena Handbook, but I believe you will get better performance from using MP4 under WMP as it will use the Imageon Hardware decoder that Coreplayer cannot use.
However from my experience, WMP is far too restrictive, hence TCPMP/Coreplayer is the best on the market. .wmv is pretty crap for PPC playback IMHO compared other formats. .wmv is fine on Full blown PC though.

No disrespect panvita, but you obviously have no idea what I've been talking about. Take any of those movies that you say is full screen in Smart Movie and run some test with it,(I use the latest version) and the Smartmovie converter cannot even encode at full VGA 640x480 by default and the PPC SmartMovie player doesn't like most videos encoded by other encoders (its limited).
What I'm trying to say is SmartMovie Player on the PPC is inferior by far to TCPMP and Coreplayer. Check the options in SmartMovie player to show framerate whilst a movie is playing and check the actual resolution too. I think you'll find that it is more often than not, Not real VGA res and when it is, your frame-rate will be terribly slow.
Then run the same movie file in TCPMP or Coreplayer and check your property settings after playing your movie file and you'll see again the frame rate achieved and how many frames were dropped.
Don't mean to sound arrogant or like a Mr Know-it-all, but it is pretty much common knowledge that Coreplayer and TCPMP is far superior to all other PPC based Video players on the market to date, even though 'It' still has its shortcomings.

Core is good but if my main objective is to watch my movies(of which all are .wmv) full screen with no hiccups then why not just use WMP to do that. I like .wmv for it's simplicity. But that's just me.

I can't argue with that at all. Coreplayer is crap for WMV but that is exactly the format WMP likes to play.

OK, the reason is probably that when you use Coreplayer or TCPMP, you have the Imageon Decoder activated...No good, NOT fixed to work with Coreplayer or TCPMP as yet.
Coreplayer: Under your video settings, ensure you have the following settings checked or enabled:
Video Output: ATI IMAGEON
Video quality: High
Smooth Zoom: On
Dither: Ticked
Acceleration: UNticked (else you'll be using the hardware decoder - no good)
Under Preferences select Direct Draw options page and select the following:
Overlay with colorkey - Ticked
Use blitting instead of overlay - Blank
Use device stretching for blitting - Blank
Overlay format - YV12
There you have it. Last but not least, don't encode videos much beyond 480x320 otherwise the Athena cannot handle it.

Assuming you are wanting to encode from bluray I follow this method. should work with most video files I would think.

I have made high quality full length movies from both bluray and dvd around 1gb in size. and they play and look great.
Edit: I normally "rip" the movie only files to hd and mount em as an iso rather than from disk.. Not sure if I can name the "sly" software I use to do so as it sits in the grey area between legal and not
I use handbrake and encode to 800x400. The advantage is most films can be reduced to 1 to 2 GB depending on source. Sometimes I crop sides a bit if original is 2.35. I playback on epic with mvideoplayer. For some reason, sometimes mvideoplayer sometimes does not do mkv embedded subtitles well but there is an mkv subtitle extractor android app.
Ok 2 things to note...
1) if you keep your SD card as Fat you gotta break up the video if its too large filesize. I think 4gb is it..
2) Realistically speaking our phones have the processing power to play 1080p but its locked ...so you'll have to re-encode them to less until someone figures it out...I would keep the aspect ratio the same though..so if your dealing with 16:9 1080p..make it 16:9 720p...if you change the aspect ratio it will make the video stretch...
I think you mean Transcode, not encode. Typically most recording devices encode at the source, because storing raw video in HD has a high capacity and performance requirement.

I've encoded Star Wars from 800KBPS-1500KBPS, every encode is.... bearable, but it's very noticeable that it's laggy. I've also used RockPlayer and the default video player for Android and still no success. Funnily enough, though, my friend's Epic, and my HD2 (On WM) play these movies just fine.
Any suggestions?
Encoded using Handbrake and MediaCoder, both with the same results.
When using handbrake what preset do you use first?
My Quick Handbrake guide:
preset to iphone
change container to mp4
depending on your source set width to either 1280 or 800 or whatever your sources width is at. Up scaling is not recommended. select keep aspect ratio
on audio select your source and encode to AAC mixdown to dolby pro logic II sample rate auto, never set bitrate over 160.
uncheck chapter markers
Encode movie
If your encodes are over 2GB they wont play so split em. Or you can recode with a lower resolution I suggest splitting over lower resolutions.
I have had the same problem and tried a few different apps with no luck. I'm guessing it's the GPU. but very disappointed though my gfs epic plays them without a problem.

Do you know if using a Class 6 - 16GB card as opposed to the class 2 8gb that came with the phone would cause the issue?

Looking to convert some vids over to load on Atrix. What is the max width, height, framerate and bit rate that the Atrix will play. Looking for best pic and sound, not necessarily concerned with size?
1 more thing, what is the best App to use to convert ?

This list is accurate. MKV containers are not supported. They do have to be an MP4.
As far as a program that can transcode your stuff.... handbrake is good... I use Megui on my windows based desktop because avisynth is very flexible

Also, i have a video sitting on my phone that is some weird res... like 1904x976... as long as its resized mod16 you should be fine...
There is a thread debating this from a couple days ago. My suggestion is get megui, use the x264 main profile for video and get nero aac for audio. Have fun~~

I'm on win 7, I use this GPU accelerated video encoder called Badaboom2 from Elemental Technologies. The 2.0 version will offer additional profiles, i simply drag the movies you currently have: mkv, avi, divx, wmv. or if you have a DVD movie you want to convert. After drag and drop, select the output:
Output: Motorola Xoom
Profile: Baseline
Level: Auto
Highest Quality @ 3500kbit
Resolution: 1280x720
Aspect Ratio: Fill to Aspect
Now, this is assuming that you are going to convert/transcode HD videos as source for HD playback on the Atrix or via dock. Atrix will support MP4 with H.264 baseline profile. The Atrix processor is similar to Moto Xoom so start with Xoom's profile and adjust that accordingly. But a update is on the way for Atrix to support high and in addition to native mkv. I suggest you download a trail of Badaboom2 and try it out, you can convert up to 30 full length videos as a trail, by then the Atrix update should land, you won't need to convert any mkv files after that. Simply uninstall Badaboom =)

I've tried QQview, but it doesn't seem to be able to scan my MicroSD card because it sees the internal as SDcard and doesn't seem able to go 'up' a level from there...?
My main interest is being able to play torrent downloaded files *without* conversion. So far a 720p xVid seemed fine but a bit h.264 did not.

i have trield many different H.264 and most do not work. H.263 works but it wont auto resize, meaning playback through the phone is scaled to about 50% size despite perfect resolution.
Then i tried the xvid option, 2000kB/s stream, this particular movie was 1280x544 and it went full screen and played very well on the atrix hd dock and webtop.
One issue, i trield to copy a 4 gig file to my phone and it said file is too large despite the 32gig capaicty of this microSD!

Mate sd card is formatted in fat32. 4gb is the file size limit.

Avatar is somewhere around 8,3GB in MKV 720p. After this it will be around 4GB in 720p. Thats nice!
resize on atrix
If your videos are not taking advantage of all the pixles on the screen use mvideoplayer from the market. Under the settings you can make it play videos fill or strech for the screen and it still looks great for me.
Can we discuss what video formats you use for dvd rips and settings . What works what doesnt. App you use and on what os.
Me personally i make 720p mp4 videos using mpeg streamclip on my mac. I always hear ppl talking about making 1080p mkv files or whatever does the quality even matter on our none hd screens ?? Arnt dvds only 480 or 720p any how. Anyone here rip bluerays .

Resolution:
DVDs are 480p max. If you encode to higher res, all you're doing is stretching the video for no purpose.
Stretching the res just makes the end product bigger with no quality gain, and your player or device
will stretch the video anyway.
Blurays are 1080p. The scale (e.g. 720p size reduction) and quality you use are dependent on what you
intend to play the videos on. 720p is perfect for the Galaxy Note 10.1 with its 800p screen
Suggested format:
The best video codec: h264
The best audio codec: aac
The best container: mkv (for multiple audio and subs) or mp4 (subs as well as more than two audio streams a bit troublesome)
My preference (h264 video +aac audio) in mkv.
As a rough guide:
A practical DVD rip = ~1.3-1.7 GB (~1500 kbps @480p)
A decent BluRay rip would be ~2.7 GB (~2500 kbps @720p)
A fairly transparent BluRay rip ~5 GB (~4000 kbps @720p)
Free or Commercial:
Depending on how much control you want over quality, as well as ease of use, I'd say go with a commercial solution (WinAVI is quite good).
Otherwise free solutions are quite good (e.g. RipBot264, StaxRip, Handbrake) but you will need to decrypt your purchased discs to your hard drives.
I almost exclusively watch 1080p MKV files on my Note 10.1. At first the audio had trouble staying synced with hardware decoding on every player I tried. Luckily VLC recently fixed that somehow with their Android app. I think MKV is good if you have multiple audio or subtitle tracks. Logically I know I shouldn't see a difference in quality between 720p & 1080p on this tablet, but I do. Think it has something to do with how it's scaled.

The 1080p could probably show better. Though the difference should be negligible.
If the video has black bars, these may be cropped in encoding. Which means the 1080p video is closer to 900p.
Encoding a cropped video to 720p may actually be closer to 544p (i.e. 1280x544p) to maintain the aspect ratio (so the video doesn't look "tall").
If the audio stream is 5.1 DTS audio, you're gonna probably have stuttering due to processing the larger audio file.
2 Channel (stereo) audio is all you need for the Note 10.1
Thanks guys so making my dvd rips 720p isnt doing anything but making a bigger file eh. Dont think mpeg streamclip has mkv which is why i use mp4 so far with no issues. My settings are h.264 aac 3000kbps bitrate limit and files are around 2 gb...

I usually rip my DVD's and convert them to .avi or mp4 at 480p or lower and purchase fullHD movies and re-encode them to 480p or 720p when i want to load them in my tablet. As long as the audio is good (i tend to favor conversion to stereo for tablet playback), i'm willing to sacrifice a little in image quality since having movies in fullHD can eat up a lot of space pretty quickly.

The difference of 480p against 720p isn't very noticeable if you watch movies with your tablet at arm's length.
720p is HD, and 1080p is Full HD so we do have an HD display. And I enjoy a good MKV Bluray rip on this device using BS Player.
And watching 480p isnt as bad due to the resolution.

I have many videos in different formats, which sometimes cannot be played on the note 10.1. So I loaded them on my extSD, search in this app for video files, and all are found (3Gp, MPG, everything). Then I just tap on "convert" and the app changes format so that the movie can be played with stock video player.
I do not like to wait hours for video conversion at home til my pc is done with the task. The Note works on even with display switched off, and conversion is really fast.
ensure you rip them as summed to stereo if you are using large bitrates, BS player can deal with 5.1 audio but struggles with higher bitrates as it can only decode 5.1 in software. Stock player can play 5.1 AC3
REWORDED: On this tablet, is there a way to watch a wider-than-16:9 movie so the view size is enlarged/zoomed proportionally to fill the screen vertically? Instead of stretching and distorting a wide-screen movie vertically to fill the screen to get rid of the black bars (top and bottom), is it possible to enlarge the movie proportionally for fill the screen vertically while cropping the sides? That way, the sides are cropped-off, but there's no distortion. Maybe there's other movie viewing apps that can achieve this? I'm referring to only when watching, not encoding. Thanks.

To be accurate NTSC DVDs are 480 horizontal lines max. PAL are (up to) 576.
But back to the OPs question, I use makemkv to RIP the DVD and then Freemake to recode to generic Android supported codecs - which also decreases the file size by a factor of 3.
Freemake allows you to set a "up to" resolution so one setting of 720p will do for all DVDs and BluRay/HD-DVDs ...
