[Q] Porting a Phone contact list - Galaxy S I9000 General

I'm relatively new to mobile phones.
I was using a Samsung Blue Earth S7550 briefly and input a bunch of contacts into it; names, tel. numbers and photos etc.
I was under the assumption that when you take your SIM card out and put it into another phone all of your contacts remain intact on the new phone.
I made sure that the phone contacts were on both the phone and SIM card.
Now when I put the SIM into my Samsung i9000, none of the contacts are there.
Is there something I must do to get it to work?
The phone recognizes the SIM at startup.
I hope I won't have to input all that data again.
TIA

yes, they should be visible. there is an option to hide sim contacts, maybe you have inadvertently enabled that.
contacts->menu->display option->choose contacts to display "CHECK SIM"

there is a check mark in settings you can enable to read the contacts from the SIM card
or you can export it from Outlook (if you are using outlook)
then import it using one of these contact management tools

exporting contacts to computer...

i know this should be very simple but for some reason i just cannot figure this out..i dont use outlook btw. is there any other way to do this... im tryin to upgrade to the new 3g sim without having to manually reenter all the contacts.... anyone?
EDIT. ok so even if i have outlook on my computer, but dont use it for email, can i still use outlook to import the numbers.. then export them back to the phone?
...you can use sqb backup to backup and restore only pim contacts.
With pocketinformant2007 you can beam all your contacts out (as vcards) by BT or IR and use 'receive beam' to import them back...
hmm. i cannt even get active sync to export them using outlook now. basically im screwed?
...sorry, missed your 'edit'. Yes, that's possible...
Use the sim manager to save the contacts into TyTNs memory, then change the sim.

so sim manger >menu > save to contacts will keep the #s on my phone but also the memory card. are you sure??!
...my simcard contains only the numbers of my provider. How did you get all your numbers in, because I can only put in (200) numbers and names, by HAND. For me that isn't a possibility. Or do you've got an more up-to-data manager, i've got version 2.30.0...

Do it, then remove your sim and access your contacts. If they are there, and your sim is not on the TyTN, then your contacts are in TyTN's memory.
From now on, I would suggest you to use the internal memory of the phone, and backup with activesync + outlook, and don't store contacts on the SIM card anymore.

He wants to do it the other way round, that is puting contacts from SIM to TyTN.
...i know he wants them out of sim. I want to know how did he gets them in. Because my sim cannot contain contacts with emailadresses etc. My contactsinfo are embedded in windows\pim.vol. It would be nice to know if he can. It would be a nice place to backup when you want to perform a hard reset...
only the phone number can be stored on the sim, not the whole vcard data. Also the number of contacts you can store is very limited. I won't recommend using the sim as backup.
Anyway, if you still want to save contacts to SIM contacts try using the attached cab.
...cheers...

can you hide\filter your sim contacts?

I like to have all my contacts saved onto my phone so I can add pictures and other info to the contact infromation that it doesnt allow you to do if it is just on the sim card... I also like to keep all my contacts on my sim card in case the phone crashes and I need to pull the sim and switch phones.. here is my problem. Since I have my contacts on both my phone and my sim, they show duplicates in the contacts list. Is there any way to filter out the sim card contacts so I dont have 2 of everyone(1 on phone, 1 on sim)??

about to kill my x1 !! ! ! sim to phone contacts

does anyone know of an easy way to import all my SIM contacts into my phone.
I am using my X1 with the sbp panel (tried the shell 2.0 but didnt like it). I want to have my speed dial contacts on the 3rd pane, but I cant add photos to the sim conacts, only to the phone contacts..
instead of importing my contacts one by one, or creating new ones i was hoping there was a way to mass import them...forgive me if im being dumb!

It is written in the manual, page 7.
"SIM Manager – Manage the contacts stored on your
USIM/SIM card. You can also copy USIM/SIM contents
to Contacts in your phone."
So, use the SIM manager and the options it provides to select all contacts anc copy them to the phone.

[Q] Trade out my SIM card - transferring info

Currently using the card that came with my tmo V330 and also rode in a V195 before going into this Vibrant. Couldn't access the web with the supplied card, so easiest solution was to use the old one. I know now that tmo needs info on any new card before granting web access, so that prob is solved - just needing proper method of transferring my contacts, etc info to the new card.
Directions will be appreciated!
I'm pretty sure t mobile can do it for you for free
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If I were you, I'd make sure I had a Google account sync'd with my phone first of all. Then, put the old (the one with contacts on it) SIM card on the Vibrant, copy all the contacts to the phone (Contacts -> Settings -> More -> SIM Management -> SIM to Phone), then to go "Import/Export" in Contacts -> Settings -> More. From here, click on Export to SD Card to copy your phone contacts (which used to be your SIM contacts) to a file. Then go back to Import/Export and click on Import from SD Card and choose to import it to your Google account. Now all your contacts are saved in your Google account. From here, take your old SIM out and put your new SIM in and rejoice. Just remember to save new contacts straight to your Google account and not to the phone, and you never have to worry about losing contacts or transferring them via a piece of hardware ever again. Also, should you break/brick/otherwise damage your phone, you can always just pull all your contacts down from Google in a matter of seconds. Far more convenient.
Thanks to both who offered solutions
Opiomorph - you Sir, are the reason the term "Guru" was created... At the point where I was asked, "Are you sure you want to export your contacts?", I wussed and had to crack and consume a cold one. Rally.. Eventually my trembling finger hit the accept button, and I watched my contacts shoot to t the Google account.
Wrote down the numbers from the new SIM and installed card to phone. Booted up and called tmo to verify new card. Re-established login with Google.
Perfect! Everything is working and my contacts now show copy to Google account plus to new SIM.
Your concise instructions have made my day!!
To others who follow, first mention of settings refers to that while in the"Contacts"mode.
Thanks for pointing that out, I edited my post to reflect that. Glad I could help but...did you really have to drink so early in the morning? It is the weekend, I suppose. :3
Yes, but it was 5 o'clock somewhere, (smiles)

[Q] contacts emergency

The screen on my Samsung Focus no longer works however the rest of the phone works as I am able to place calls using the bluetooth in my car. However I have since picked up an HTC One X but I am at a loss on how to get to my contacts. I do not see any of my contacts on the windows live ID I used to set up the phone nothing seems to have backed up anywhere but they are on my phone somewhere since I can place a call using name recognition in my car.
so I guess I have 2 questions.
Is there something i'm missing within the Zune software to backup the entire phone like Itunes has?
Is there a way I can access the internal storage via my computer to fish out the contacts in my phonebook?
If anyone is able to help you'd lower my blood pressure and prolong my life. Thank You.
do you have a "sim card" if so all your contacts are in it!
Had 2 different places read the sim card. They said there's nothing on it. It's the first thing I tried.
Contacts are on the phone, unless you've specified you want them back-up'd somewhere else, online. I usually use either Outlook account or Gmail to sync my contacts. The contacts on the SIM are retrieved TO the phone, not saved TO the SIM (Settings, People, Import SIM contacts).
One way I see you could backup your contacts this is to get these 2 files from the phone:
"store.vol" and "PimIndex.vol"
These contain the SMS and the contacts.
For that, mandatory reads: this thread and this thread
You could explore the phone with Touch Explorer, but depends on too many things if it will work...
Another idea is to do it "blindly" with 2 phones: yours and another Focus side-by-side and trying to copy exactly where to tap...
There might be an app on Marketplace that backups automatically on skydrive. But you'd have to search for such.
Good luck mate.
