Hi,
I'm facing some strange problem while updating the weather information through Wifi and EDGE (GPRS).
When I try to update the current weather status through Wifi, a strange city (say X) gets added into my city list as "My Location". So by default, I get to see weather for that city and not for the city where I live (say Y).
Also I could not remove this city (X) from the City list as it does not show up in the list.
But if try to update weather information using EDGE, I can see current weather condition 2 times for my city. The strange city (X) gets renamed to my City (Y).
Has anyone encountered such a problem?
Any help available to solve this?
Thanks in advance,
- Abhijeet
As far as I understand it, the default location (the first one in the list) is always automatically updated via the location service - based on the location of the WiFi hotspot or gsm tower (when connected using EDGE).
It seems that in your case the location service is not able to determine your location correctly when connected via WiFi.
If you wish, you can add another locations, but it seems that the default one cannot be deleted or changed. You could, however, disable the location service in Settings | Location.

In sony ericson cell phones, there is option in messages settings that you can set it to get Area Info. After that you will see some information about your cell location in first screen.
is there any program/tool for getting area info on wm5?
Such app ewisted also on Nokia
Yes, that would be good to have such app on HTC. I remember to have used an app on my Nokia (7650) that allowed to automatically change my phone profile depending on the area it received from the operator antenna.
Any info on that ?

yes you can...
- go to settings > cell broadcast
- check the 'Enable' and 'Receive Channel List'
- tap 'Add' or 'New'
- give any name (e.g: location), and enter the channel number '050'
- DONE. you will receive a message from network everytime the phone enters new area.
credits to someone in this forum (i forgot) who gives this tips.
Thanks.
Or you could install Google maps. (Visit www.google.co.uk/gmm on your mobile web browser)
It has a location function based on cell sites (no more accurate the more cells near you.. It gives you an area on the map displaying where you are (in case you've got no windows). You can then search for businesses in your area.

Another vote for Google Maps. I'm running in my 8125 and it will give you a good idea of where you're at area-wise. Plus, it's simply an excellent mapping and navigation system.
However, the way it works depends on someone with an active GPS transponder being in the same general area as you. Now, this works most of the time perfectly well, and will give you a pretty good pinpoint of where you're at (within .5km or so, is what I've found). That said, sometimes late at night when not many people are out and about, or when I go over to my girlfriend's house, who lives in a sparsly-inhabited part of town, it won't always come up with a fix.
Still, by far my favorite application on my phone.

cell channels only available in selected models
you can add a third party application but it will be dependent on your radio rom!
google maps support this but you will have to pay for it because its over GPRS or EDGE.

Hi everyone, I searched the forums but couldn't find an answer to this...
I'm using the HTC Home plugin which is great but I was wondering which internet connection the Weather tab is using to get updates on the weather...It refreshes the weather information when my wireless is turned off...is it going through gprs, tzones? I cant find any information on how to control how frequently it updates the weather information...is there a way to only limit it to wifi...i dont want to rack up a huge data bill....any help would be much appreciated!!!

Auto update
Click on the name of your city. Then go to "menu" at the bottom of the page. Click "weather options". Uncheck "download data automatically". Now you can manually update when you have wi-fi.
Or you could install and older version of HTC home. There is a glitch in the weather tab and it can't update through GPRS at all.
(1)I know Sense2.5 Weather [my location] need use wifi Can update~
(2)i Just now try only open wifi, but no connect to Network, after use GPRS, can update Weather [my location]~
(3)but i have one question, Sense2.5 Weather [my location], is use Network or GPS know i in where?
because i try (2) indoor, can't update, try outdoor is ok~
Does anyone know ~
My location weather should work both indoors & out, but with the latest builds you will need to have wifi on even if your not using it, i.e. if you want to download My Location weather through GPRS you still need wifi turned on.
My phone is set up to use the HTC location service for time and weather. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and work 20 miles away in Rockford. Both in the Eastern time zone. For some reason, my phone changes over to Central time when I am in Rockford. I can only assume the service thinks I"m in Rockford, IL? Anyone encountered something similar?
Location service works with AGPS, when GPS is not available.
Have you checked after fixing GPS?
Also, it may be the problem with your service provider.
Try to change another provider sim & verify.
Thanks. I'll give it a try on Monday.
Got a similar problem myself...I got woken up an hour early this morning as the clock decided that my location (which is in the UK) should use the same time zone settings as Paris and Madrid, who aren't using GMT, and are therefore 1 hour out of sync with me I've hunted high and low but can't seem to find a daylight savings mode anywhere....anyone know where it is?
You could switch off the "Automatic Timezone Change":
1) Go into "Settings" > "Menu" "All Settings" > "Personal" > "Phone".
2) Tap "GSM/UMTS Services" > "Time Synchronization" > "Get Settings".
3) Un-select "Automatic change time zone and clock".
4) Tap "OK" > "OK" > "OK".
This setting is independent of the "Location" settings.
Good luck!
Ta muchly for that buddy....turns out my 3) was already unticked but putting a tick back in there seems to have done the trick as the local time settings now shows [city] GMT London,Dublin which is what it should have been saying last night instead of Paris,Madrid...
I unticked mine. Not as convenient b/c I travel a lot but it's probably the easiest solution at this point.
Thanks...

Good work.... Fixed my frustrating daylight saving time zone issues in Australia (keeps defaulting to Sydney, but I live in Brisbane which is 1 hr behind Sydney atm)
i live in Gujar khan a small tiny town near Islamabad pakistan ......
by using location service my location is correctly identified
i believe location service uses Google maps for location .......
I had the same problem, I live in a small city in NJ which is not listed in the system, there is another city with the same name in Colorado which is listed, and even though it recognizes where I live it gives me mountain time which is 2 hours earlier.
I used weather city editor, added my city, added it to TF3d as a second city and use it as visiting so I have my correct city, time and weather.
Sometimes it goes back to the original one but i can change it right from the main screen.
I hope this help.
I'll second (or third) the issue. I live in a suburb of Lancaster PA (USA), 5 miles outside of the city. The locator service can pick up every suburb cleanly (almost...see below). But if I go into the city, BOOM, my clock is 3 hrs behind. I believe it thinks I'm in Lancaster, CA. But as soon as I'm home or outside the city, it changes back to correct location and time.
But the other issue I have is with my time zone. I am in GMT-5 (when the locator has it right). But my area follows DST, so I should be GMT-5 Eastern US. Instead it shows GMT-5 Indiana; the only area on the East Coast that does not follow DST. Since I've had the HD2 since late Nov, I'm wondering what will happen in March when we hit DST. I know MS fixed the DST problem 3 yrs ago, so is the time zone identification due to the locator service or MS? Or is it possible that because I've got the best phone in the US, even though it's not supposed to be here, that HTC will address this problem with future ROM upgrades or Win7Mo?

Where are these menus on the HD2 (Uk version 1.48 ROM)? The Settings tab doesn't have an "All Settings", "Personal" or "Phone" options that I can see anywhere.
(Having the same problem in Brisbane - it even keeps updating my location with all the location stuff turned off)
OK. Found it. On a HD2 it's actually at:
Home -> Settings (tab) -> Wireless Controls -> Phone (change phone settings) -> Menu -> Network selection -> GSM/UMTS Services tab -> Time Synchronization
I've got a really odd one. My clock is correct when I stay in HTC Sense. When I hit the windows key and go into programs or settings, when I get back to the home page my time shows 1 hour 2 minutes earlier than current time. It immediately corrects itself but this driving me nuts.
Also, why can't weather connect to data when trying to update my location?

That is normal operation for the clock. The clock isn't wrong and then being set. It's just an animation when you visit the home screen. There are ways to stop, google for it. I think it's a registry hack.

I have the same problem i live in Trinidad & Tobago and we use -4 La Paz
but the service keep setting it to -4 Atlantic and that is giving me daylight savings and we don’t have that here.
Wrong Location
Hi,
the same problem on mine but me had me in India!
I was getting false 3g & HSDPA signals.
I contacted T-Mobile who confirmed that my area was being upgraded from 2g.
He then suggested that I change my phone band to GSM only, I had a similar problem with my MDA pro a few years ago.
Anyhow seems to have solved that problem, hope that helps.
By the by phone / menu / options / band / network type - choose gsm.
it hasn't solved the mystery of my disappearing contacts (sim & phone) but I guess that is for another forum!!
ok I got the same problem today. My phone changed the timezone to Paris instead of showing the correct one which was London. What I did that fixed the problem was:
Uncheck the automatically checkbox in phone settings (mentioned earlier), click ok and go back to the home screen and update the weather. then go back to the checkbox and check it again. After you update the weather again you should have the correct timezone...

Guys
I have the exact issue and have identified that only when I connect to wifi does my time zone change from -4 La Paz to -4 Atlantic. I have made all the suggested changes but with no success, further, I have searched everywhere for a soultion to this problen and it seems to not have one.
Am I the only one with this problem or is it bigger than me? Does ya'll's manilla weather update correctly? Mine hasn't updates since 11:42pm on 7-14-10. I've looked through the settings & all is the same as before 7-14-10. Nothing has been added to the device in the month of July. I can get on the internet, get messages (SMS, MMS & e-mail), but the weather will not update. Is it me or something with Accuweather? At least I think it's Accuweather that handles the manilla weather tab. Let me know & thanks in advance........
common reason is leaving your world clock set to a specific location rather than "my location"

can you tell me where i can change this setting?
the weather/location update well over wifi, but over 3G it doesn't work almost at all in my house anymore as it used to, though i can connect and send/ receive emails and browse the web normally...maybe in other locations it does
is that a problem in the weather service itself or what?

just tap the clock, however in your case i don't think it will help, since you say it sometimes works.
could be your data connection uses a proxy? settings menu all settings connection connection advanced edit proxy tab.

Manila Weather Update
Hi All,
My weather update is exactly the same it won't update using gprs (no 3g here) and it will update over wifi. This has been a problem for 5 days now but I have had the HD2 since Feb and never had a problem before!! All the settings are the same and correct and the World Time is set to "my location", yet I still have to go to wifi to update the weather??
Has anybody got any ideas?
I haven't recently loaded any programs and I'm using a stock 1.66 rom on virgin.
Cheers
Tim
Mine and my wifes has stopped telling me the exact location I am and instead gives me the weather of the city 20 miles down the road. It used to tell me the exact village I was in.
I have the same problem after hard reset

Yep mines exactly the same, been like it for a few weeks now.
I contacted HTC about it and they say they are currently working on a solution for it.
Maybe worth letting them know you have problems.

FIX!
This is translated from dutch filesystem:
settings-menu-more-connectivity-connections-edit existing connection-edit-next- Now your in the Accesspoint configuration. Delete the access point name (in my case portalmmm.nl; KPN Hi Netherlands) so now this field is blank- next-finish. Now you have to restart your Leo and voila Now your weather is updating without any problems. When I had the weather-not-updating problem, i did this and it instantly updated again and never had problems with it ever since. I think this also works with other providers. Try it out!
does not work in Serbia - Telenor
Had the same problem, weather would not update. After switching off "manila" in "setings"--> "more" -->"today screen" and back on again, everything updates as usual.
