i am just wondering so please dont post hate replies haha.
Apps:
Y5 (turns off/on wifi automatically when off/in range)
Sleepy Battery (turns off/on wifi when screen is off/on)
Task Killer Full/Advanced Task Killer Pro -(task closing apps when running in background and not in use)
the Y5 is meant to run wifi only in locations that are picked up and save to your device. the problem is that its constantly on even while its asleep/idle. does this actually kill your battery for being on constantly and monitoring the wifi's connection? having the app turn off wifi to save battery was a major battery saver for my blackberry so wondering if its the same with android nexus one.
the Sleepy Battery app disables wifi when the screen is turned off (sleep/idle) and enables wifi when screen is on. works well but does turning off the wifi off while the phones screen is off save battery vs having wifi on even when the screen is off? does turning off/on wifi on screen on/off waste more battery then having it on or off?
also, if using the 2 apps (Y5 and SleepyBattery) fight over enabling/disabling wifi make the phone drain due to constant active programs trying to execute the tasks?
hmm...
now moving on to task killing programs, does having them open on startup and keeping them on kill your battery while monitoring apps that are left on? the idea would be great to have apps automaticlly close when going to the home screen and forgetting to close apps that are not required to be open when not in use.
these apps sound like they should work great if they in fact down kill your battery! if the y5 does save battery while not using memory future updates with added option to turn off the wifi when screen is off included in the app would be an ultimate wifi app for power managing!
*i would like to note i currently dont have task killing apps installed although when i did they only was to close apps i know could be closed without them restarting like slacker radio, pixelpipe, and other apps that are used and can be closed and are not required to be running in the background.
+1 I really like this post because those are some programs that I'm going to pick up. I hope you get your questions answered because I wonder the same thing. Thanks for making this post.
I have encountered a problem (or not!) that the battery seems to drain real fast (8-10% per hour) when the phone is in standby mode with WIFI on and the only app running in the background is Ebuddy. I don't know if this is a problem or not because on my old Blackberry Bold, even if you let a chatting app such as Jivetalk running in the background with WIFI or 3G on, the batterry doesn't drain that much, in fact it uses just a bit more battery than just standby. My phone is not rooted, and if I continuously use the phone for chatting, surfing and listening for the music, the battery seems to be find though, I get around 6 hours until the battery is dead. Any help would be awesome, thank you very much for your help
Try switching off your GPS. I did and now my battery is sweet. I only switch on the GPS when I need it, i.e. maps, weather, you get the message...
What widgets do you have on your home screen? I've had problems before with some of the active widgets preventing the phone from sleeping.. I generally get 2-3 % per hour when in standby.
Now at 88% after 6 hours..
I have wifi on 3g on and gps on and bluetooth on.. So they're all sleeping just fine.

Actually i dont have many widgets running in the background, I only use 3 home screens, the widgets I have are Beautiful Widgets, Calendar, Battery Life and I have Juice Defender running in the background full time. The problem is, standby mode without either WIFI and 3G is OK but with any of them, the battery starts draining real quick
you should be able to set wifi to sleep when phone display is inactive. 3g will always use more juice than 2g but how much more seems to depend on your location and 3g availability/strength. I get about 1 day use with 3g turned on and 2 and a half days with only 2g enabled.
It would be really nice if the phone could switch back to 2g when sleeping but its not possible to do because you cant control the 2g/3g directly from apps. The best that apps can do is display the standard android settings page.
Ahah... Juice defender... I've had problems with that preventing my phone from sleeping.. Suggest you do what I did and de install it.. My phone lasts a lot longer without it..
Also, if that still doesn't work try removing beautiful widgets, I've not heard of problems with that one but some of the weather widgets also prevent the phone from sleeping.

Thank you very much guys, I will try to uninstall Juice Defender to see how it goes. I did mention 1 thing in case you forget, I had Ebuddy running in the background, facebook and twitter update every 1 hour or so, but even that.the battery still seems to drain too fast, even when nothing using connect to the internet
At Phantasm4489: Actually at my house there is only 2G EDGE coverage

@ im_iceman: Uninstalled Juice Defender and the problem is still there, maybe I will have to test uninstall the weather widget and give it a go again, will report soon tmrw as it is too late now

Hi - Couple of things.. .. 1. Did you disable JD before you uninstalled it - read somewhere that this is the best way.. and 2. Have you restarted the phone to clear JD from Memory?
Which version of the firmare are you on? The older ones 014 and 016 weren't as good at sleeping..
Task Killers also tend to cause problems (@GT Blackice) They will stop things that need to be in memory and so the phone will restart them.. I've found it better without.. Phone runs smoother and battery lasts longer. (Although one or two others believe that they help; I think that this is because they're killing dodgy apps which aren't sleeping properly when not active.)..
Yes i disabled JD before uninstall it and did a clean reset even with taking out the battery. I'm on firmware 023, I think its the latest one for my phone. It's so bad if the battery cannot last any longer with WIFI on, anyways thank you a lot though

Disable APN(3g and 2g, there is a widget for this) while you're not using it and battery last significantly longer. If you need internet for E-mail push or some other apps(timescape) then use 2g(as was reccomended above) and be happy if it lasts for 2 days. I've also discovered that using wifi instead of APN uses less power.
That's really odd. I'm on 023 too and mine is fine.. The only other thing I can think of.. Possibly... I've stopped using timescape...
Other things about my phone.
Uk based.
Vodafone contract
NOT branded.
Not rooted.
Using ADW.
Using k-9 for email.
Handscent for sms.
No task killer, no start up manager.
No internet active widgets on my home screen.
Phones been on now for 16 hours.. Now at 60% battery left. Just also noticed that Gps has been off today.
Been at home for most of the day so not been using 3g/ gprs much.

How can u disable Moxier Mail if you dont use startuqap manager. Cuz this app was the real drainer. And how do you disable Timescape? Did you use any WIFI at all during the last 16 hours? I even uninstalled the weather widget and the prob stayed there, nothing changed. Arghhhhh...
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I thought moxier was a problem too, but in the end turns out not to be.. As long as you've not configured it, it just sits in the background not doing anything. Haven't disabled timescape.. Just removed the widget and set the update frequency to never, then stopped using it.
Wifi has been on and active quite a lot. Used xda and internet a fair bit on it yesterday.

Did you try the wifi sleep method as mentioned earlier by someone? Perhaps need a new launcher such as adw launcher? I mean when I use my wifi I lose bout 12% or so per hr, annoys me, tried everything I could think of!

If you have a rogue app that is causing the phone to not sleep properly would it not show up under the battery status in settings?
If you see Cell standby, Phone Idle and Display at the top of your list in the battery usage and that accounts for around 90% or more then your phone is probably working as expected. If the display percentage is too high you can probably reduce the display brightness to save battery other than that the only thing you can do to affect the battery life is to turn reduce refresh times for apps which update automatically, turn off APN or switch back to 2g.
Thanks everyone for your advices. Anyways, the prob doesnt seem to fixed though, maybe its because of my phone.
@im_iceman: I did not configure Moxier mail but its still running in the background and drain a lot of my battery, the I tried Startup Auditor and it fixed that prob well, i dunno why

Hi.. How do you know that moxier was draining the battery?
I also stopped using start up managers too cos they were also draining battery..
Sent from my x10 using XDA and swype.
there is always a chance your battery is damaged. Get a battery graphing application and see how it drains over time. One of my friends had a phone with a bad battery - one of the cells was clearly damaged and unable to retain charge properly and it was easily visible when watching the battery drain over time
My iPad gets better battery life than my Tab so what are tips to improve my Tab in terms of its battery?
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
I know some of these observations are pretty common across all devices but still here goes on how I squeeze more battery efficiency -
1. Change screen brightness from auto to manual and set it 15% (for me that's fine someone else may differ)
2. Turn off wifi when not needed as both 3g/edge + wifi drains battery faster...else rest of the time on edge/3g...
3. Reboot after using the default gallery app as it stays in memory and consumes battery even after closing...there's a bug which can be fixed from here xda...

One of the major reasons the iPad had a bettery battery life than the Tab is simply that the battery in the iPad has a 50% higher capacity.

get a battery twice the size & capacity
don't use 3G/Edge/HSDPA
Use a less advanced OS and apps that don't run in the background
Wait what ? I charge my phone almost twice a week !

Personally there are few things that you can do:
Here is mine.
1. Always use your back button when you close your apps instead home.
Using home will not close of the tasks that are running. Use the Active Apps that come with SGT. it's useful. if after you do a back button but still got application running, you should probably uninstall it and feedback to developer to re-look into the function. Don't use something like 3G-watchdog, Monitoring apps that constantly running, My personal reason is it's constantly running at the background so probably it will take CPU thus consuming battery.
2. Turn off your Wi-Fi, 3G, blue tooth and GPS whenever you don't use them.
A better way is to install tasker.
On display off: turn off 3G
On Display on: turn on 3G
Of course, if you are running messenger etc, you should turn off tasker: Common sense.
3. Switch the brightness to Auto or best of all switch to certain percentage that you think it's good enough for you.
Hope this helps.
An easy way is running a third party app like Juice defender. I gain an extra 30-40% on my battery life. Does much of the same thinks mentioned in the other posts but automatically executes them at user defined instances to turn on and off certain functions to maximize battery life.
I found I got a significant battery boost by installing tasker and setting up a few profiles.
First one is GPS turned off automatically unless Navigator, Maps, Layar or Google Earth are running.
Second is the phone radio is disabled if I'm connected to my wireless network at home, and once I disconnect from the network or turn off wifi, the radio turns on.
saved me quite a bit of battery today
Thanks for your tips. I underclocked my tab to 400mhz using set cpu and it works better on battery life. I will try the other tips.
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
I downloaded the tasker app and after an hour trying i honestly have no idea how to make it work.
The only thing that I want is that the 3g turns off when the screen turns off and that it goes on when I wake the screen.
If anyone could be so kind as to tell me how to do it.
Thanks in advance

I have been using Green Power App (Free in Market)
Here is the article that I followed:
http://www.gamaze.com/blog/2010/11/improve-the-battery-life-of-galaxy-tab/#more-249
To be honest, I get a lot of random crashes with SetCPU so I uninstalled it.
Before you use SetCPU you would need to root the Tab first. Here is the link to RyanZA's z4root in case you want to give SetCPU a shoot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Overall Green Power App works really well for me
Hey guys just wondering what are the best settings? Sorry if this a repeat post, ive tried searching but cant find anything. Im still losing like 5-6% an hour if an hour at all.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
If you're losing 5-6% an hour, I would look into other saving options. I was always a setcpu user to set profiles, but I am having no problems on my x10. I would think you have something else going on, ie too many widgets, bad signal strength, too many things running, highest brightness.
Look at battery stats to see what's consuming the most of your battery.
Otherwise, the most improvement you can make with setcpu, is making a screen off profile and reducing clock to about 50%.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Could you possibly give me some optimal settings for powersave?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Probably a bad App or widget preventing your phone from sleeping... are you getting this level of drain when you're not using the phone?
You should check apps/ and widgets which access the internet to update.. check them one at a time by removing them, or turning the update off..
when in standby you should be losing around 1-2% an hour.
The other thing that causes significant drain is 3G/GPRS IF.. you are on the edge of a coverage area - my house is mainly on GPRS, but occasionally I get 3G/HSDPA.. and this constant flipping between data types knackers the battery so I've set mine to GPRS only when at home.
Cheers.
I have no live widgets just shortcuts and the digital clock. Ive turned of 3g now for some reason when i have my sim card which is not used a lot apart from internet use i have good battery lasting me all day.

Dunno' about you, but after an year I started noticing the battery isn't as good as back then.
Try JuiceDefender, that's what I'm using right now and it's quite good.
Doesnt that waste more battery?
Cause it runs in the background?
Not really sure, but thats what i think.
I vote JuiceDefender as well. It has very minor battery impact for a decent amount saved (as long as the phone's on standby and not syncing a lot). You don't state what you've already tried, but with root & unlocked bootloader you can underclock and undervolt which helps save battery a lot. Delete unneeded apps, especially the stock crud. Make sure no apps are using partial wake locks (keeping the phone from going into deep sleep) by using BetterBatteryStats. Btw, BetterBatteryStats can identify a lot of things that might be draining your battery. Of course, the most obvious battery savers would be turning brightness down, turning off GPS, turning off WiFi, lowering volume, etc.
Auto Brightness on or off ?
Really? Xperia Play's been the only Android device I've ever owned where battery life WASN'T a concern.
...at any rate... here's some tips!
• Toggle Data to "Off" when it's not needed or switch to 2G/EDGE (or even Airplane Mode for dedicated gaming sessions)
• Enable Auto-Brightness
• Disable the notifications in any app that keeps your phone in a data retrieving cycle (Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Weather, etc)
• Keep GPS/Location Data off whenever possible
• Stay away from process heavy battery destroying whores like Regina Launcher, GoLauncher, Xperia Home, Fullscreen Launcher and Claystone
• Use a minimalistic launcher (LauncherPro, Smart Launcher, Lightning Launcher, ssLauncher)
• If you like live wallpapers, that's fine - but fine-tune their options so that they aren't always murdering your battery
• Make sure your WiFi connection is set to disable mobile data (this is commonly set by default)
• Be very wise about your widget usage. If you're going to use them, fine-tune their settings so that they don't murder your battery
• Give your phone a complete battery drain, then recharge fully at least once every month.
• If you're in low-reception areas that have WiFi, save your phone a lot of battery-draining connection conflicts by keeping WiFi on.
I'm using almost everything TLR suggested plus set CPU with a profile for screen off that turns the CPU down to 340mhz. Battery seems to last pretty decent for me.
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
TLR brightness option is diff than mine, instead of auto bright i just simply put it as low as possible. It totally savs more.
Im using a Mugen 1800 battery . Bought it last week and i easily get 20-40% more charge than with the standard one.
It lasted me for full 2 days of light usage (2 hours and 30 minutes of display time) .
Tried nearly everything on this page.BUT, does OC waste alot of battery??
Overclocking would make your battery worse. I don't know if it has a major effect though, depends what you overclock it to.

How much battery time are you getting now?
My advice, go back to 100% stock factory reset.
Then debloat.
If your phone is old, your battery probably lost some of its capacity, so you could try a new battery.

My battery is fine now, tried all the tips and made massive difference. Thanks everyone!!
I don't know if battery is different here in Aus (BST41-1500mAh), but mine is 18 months old and just by turning off bluetooth and WiFi and controlling screen brightness and 3G as i need them, i got 2 days general use (10 calls per day 50 sms and 1hr 3G web browsing per day) R800i.
Last month i flashed JellyBean following these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801983 and now I get 3-4 days use! With this mod I can leave it in 2G mode and for some reason it still gets data via EDGE so I can still get facebook + skype messages etc. This feature and i'm guessing better control of the CPU and tasks are obviously the main reasons for better life
I would really like that rom but i need camera.
