how can i do hard reset?

power off
remove battery cover for better press
press and hold volume up and volume down
keep holding
tap and release power.
if it doesn't work, chances are you aren't holding vol up and down hard enough.

Why cant I access tri-coloured screen?

I have tried literally 100s of times but no matter what I do or how long I hold down both the volume down button and the power button I never get to the tri-coloured screen. Is there any reason I wouldn't be able to access it?
Are you holding down the volume down button and the power button at the same time? If so, only hold the volume down button and briefly touch the power button. What I mean by briefly is a quick press and continue holding down the volume button until you see the tri-colored screen. If that doesn't work, you may want to post your question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377. You will get some excellent help there. Good luck!
Just remove the stylus

[Q] Reset vs. Restart

If I long press the power button, it asks me if I want to turn off my Xoom.
Long press of power then restarts the Xoom.
This is preforming a reset/reboot, correct?
What does the combination Vol. up+power accomplish, something different?
Thanks

When you long press the power button you are asking the xoom to perform a shutdown.
When you press volume up + power you are forcing a shutdown. I had my xoom freeze up in me once and the power button long press did nothing. I had to use the volume up + power to shut the zoom down.

[L5] Foolproof boot to recovery

Yesterday I had a hard time trying to boot an L5 (612) to recovery; there are many instructions out there that I was never able to make work, like this one, for example:
Press and hold the Volume down key + Power key, after 2 seconds when the lights go on you have to press 2 seconds on the home button
Click to collapse
So, the best instructions I found were on this thread:
turn your device off, then press volume"-" + home button + power button until it vibrates and shows LG logo then release only power button and keep pressing both of the others for about 8 seconds then release.
Click to collapse
And the method I found out worked best after some trial and error (and lots of googling):
Power off
Press and hold (Volume down) + (Home) keep holding
Press and hold (Power) and release it (Power) after the phone vibrates.
Keep holding (Volume down) + (Home)
Let about 8 seconds pass and then release (Home). Keep holding (Volume down)
Keep holding (Volume down) until the phone enters recovery
For me, works every time.
I heard about another:
Hold VOL-, HOME and POWER
When it vibrates, hold only HOME
Hold it until recovery shows up
???
PROFIT!
