[Q] Changing Everything in HTC Magic - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello everyone,
I would like to share my HTC Magic problem with you. Let me introduce my phone first. I'm typing everything which i presume is important in each step:
Model : HTC Magic
32A ENG S-OFF H
Hboot - 1.33.2005
CPLD-12
Radio 3.22.20.17
recovery: RAv1.2.1H
Firmware : 1.6
Baseband: 62.52S.20.18U- 3.22.20.17
Kernel: 2.6.29.6-cyanogenmod
Mod: 4.2.15.1
Build no: DRC92
Story:
I was going to buy a new phone and would like something different than usual phones. So i ordered this phone from my cousin in Hong Kong. He bought and sent this to me (i live in Turkiye).
First problem i faced was the 3G. Later i found out that (by approaching to HTC customer care with IMEI no) the phone is actually a Rogers and its a Canadian model (BTW I believe HTC Magic is the most complicated phone in the world with all the models, versions, brands and names). The 3G frequency is different than here (here we use 2100 but my phone supports 1800 i guess). So i cant use 3G in here and you can imagine how Edge can be painful. Basicly i can't use this phone with full features becoz of the lack of internet speed.
Other issues are with the firmwares. I would like to update it to the last one (as today it is Froyo i guess) which my phone supports. I am not good with technical stuff and linux for example but i read a lot in forums. Found a way to root the phone and the upgrade to 1.6 with a Cyanogenmod. But later i stucked. All these "kernels" , "xx versions" made me confused.
Here is what i really want to know:
Is there a way for this phone to work in 2100 frequency which i need to use 3G? It can be very risky, illegal, whatever. I want to try. I can't use the phone like this anyways. If yes, which way i should follow in what order?
Another question is how do i get the latest firmware of Android OS to my phone? Cyanogenmod looks cool but it also installs many apps that i don't like. There is a Cyanogen Wiki with with a good guide how to root, install stuff. Also many references to here. What i like is to have a simple, naked version of Android OS, then i believe i can add any apps i like from the market. I don't plan to do advanced stuff with the phone. What do i need in order to have them as i like?
Thank you for reading until here. I will really appreciate if someone can help me with this issue. Altough i learnt many stuff in past months about all these "android language" , i may also need a guide thru these processes. Like, from an advanced HTC Magic user.
Thanks a lot!

Hi,
Ok just to make it shorter:
Is there a way to change the HSPA band of HTC Magic by any chance?
My phone is supporting 850 and 1900. What i need is to work with 2100 HSPA band frequency.
Already rooted. Specs written in first post.
Thanks again.

Since you are already rooted and using a CyanogenMod 1.6 ROM, I would suggest you go to his Wiki for step by step instructions to upgrading your ROM to Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2. which is what I'm using.

From everything I've read you cannot change the frequency of the phone.

@wjsturgis3
Yes i did it yesterday. Upgraded to 2.1 . It looks clear, i liked it. More important thing i wanted to learn is to change the frequency of 3G band (whatever it is called) to 2100 in order to use 3G in here.
and @freyder
Thank you for the answer. If only there was a way to do it Its like having an Aston Martin but drive it with a 60 kph speed limit.
I will look further tho. Problems always teach new things.

[Q]Singaporan HD2 On US AT&T 3G

I've read a couple threads on this already but couldn't get concise answers to the questions I have specifically through it, so I'll list them to follow if anybody could help out. I'm new to all this business but relatively tech savvy so quick answers or references are just fine by me! Thanks guys!
1) Bought my HD2 in Singapore, as I understand the radio doesn't work on US 3G due to a difference in bands (which I didn't know when I bought it) - is it possible to flash ..for instance.. the Telstra Radio ROM to the phone and open up the capability? As I understand it theirs works on the US 3G network.
2) If I can't flash 3G radios for the US onto my phone, are their any good ways to increase data performance outside of that? Right now it's pretty awful - can't even search youtube let alone watch anything.
3) Custom ROMS.. I've seen quite a few of them, trying to open up the best performance phone and data wise for my cell, any recommendations? I understand it may be biased based on location/use/etc. But a general consensus on which work best will give me a good place to start. Don't need a ton of fancy options, just performance boosting with the standard HTC Sense works for me.
Thanks for the help everyone, sorry if I'm reposting but I've delved through several posts already and couldn't find precisely what I'm asking for answered in a direct manner.

1) No
2) If you have AT&T try setting up the proxy server for the connection
3) Try before you buy. Hey wait their free, you can of course donate to the cook, in most cases.
Awesome, thanks for the quick answers, I appreciate it!
Aren't the HD2 Quad band phones?
US uses 1900 GSM right? I'm not from the US so i don't know....
BUt if it is Quad band, shouldn't it work in the US as well? Unless 3G is a different thing altogether. As far as I know, Singapore Phones are all unlocked and it's against the law to have it locked to any telco to begin with

3G is a different thing all together, he will get EDGE but no 3G, ATT uses 850/1900 UMTS I believe, while T-Mobile uses 1700/2100

[Q] Installing CyanogenMod 6 on HTC Magic

Hi,
I would like to install cyanogenMod 6 on my HTC Magic. I followed every step cearfully on their wiki.
Suddenly i became suspicious. The whole thing is called "upgrade". I have never done anything to my phone. Do I need to install a more primitive version or do other prior steps before "upgrading" or can I go on.
Thanks in advance,
Swissman
well cyan 6 will be an "upgrade" from what your running now
you may need to downgrade to root, then upgrade, depending on what version of android you are sitting at currently...
just follow the steps on their wiki and you will be fine
Its just the section in the wiki (which I cannot link, as I'm new) is headed "upgrading from 4.1.9 to 6.0" or something very similar.
are you comming from cyanogen 4? or vanilla stock rom?
edit: sorry, read you havent done anything to your phone yet
so first you need to determine if you have a 32a magic or a 32b magic.. so follow this guide
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=How_to_determine_if_you_have_32A_or_32B
then once you know if you have a 32a or 32B
follow this guide for 32a
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Magic_(32A)
or this guide for 32b
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Magic_(32B)
you are doing the Full Update as you are not comming from an older version of cyanogenmod
ANROID 1.5 Original ROM 32 A Magic from Stock ... just finished doing the steps hope it works :S
hope it works for ya!!
Let me know if it works. I just bought a Magic yesterday off craigslist, thinking I was getting a great deal on my wife's first Android phone. I assumed it was just an unbranded MyTouch and didn't check it out for specs beforehand.
When I met the guy I confirmed it worked on calls and text, camera, etc. but didn't pay that close of attention to other things as we were both in a hurry.
Got home to find no Market or any of the Google apps, searched for info on the Magic and was pretty bummed to find out it did not have that stuff.
Spent about 3.5 hours with it last night learning and messing around, absorbing these threads and made my way to the Cyanogen mods and it would not take the 6.0 upgrade, kept aborting the install.
I put the 5.x Cyanogen on and now everything works! Very happy that A) I didn't brick it and B) it now has almost complete functionality. Only thing really missing is 3G, but my wife doesn't do any web surfing, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact I am impressed that side by side it pulls better signal than my Vibrant!
I went from thinking I got ripped for $90 to feeling I did ok! Locally the MyTouch is selling in the $150-$200 range used, so $90 makes me happy even if it is no 3G.

1.72.405.3 ROOTING... Can it b dun ???

So has anyone found a way to ROOT DHD phones with OTA 1.72.405.3 ? I've been searching regularly everyday; either it's not been dun yet or I'm not searching in the proper places....
Any insight is welcome...
Don't worry if it ever becomes possible the news will be all over the forum.
asimriz we are all awaiting with baited breath that a new exploit is found, but HTC have sewn it all up quite tight apparently.
There are plenty of people looking into this inc the mastermind O'Brien I believe
If anyone can sort this, it is Paul.
But dont expect this to happen overnight, if it happens at all
Best to just enjoy your DHD for the moment
Don't worry the developers are working on it.
I wonder why HTC doesn't want us to root?
If you get one phone almost perfect you wouldnt buy a new one. Thats why they give negative features to the phone..
Sent from my Desire HD
I would have to agree. I know it's a bit off topic but take this for an example... All the recent HTC phones I've looked up after the old brick HTC TyTn II have only dual band UMTS (3G / HSPA). Brands like LG, Samsung & Apple can make recent phones that have triband or quadband hardware supporting 3 or 4 bands in the UMTS (3G / HSPA) frequencies when HTC doesn't. Basically meaning more international 3G support or support for different networks within the same country. I see no good reason for HTC going from tri band UMTS backwards to only dual band except for anti-competitive trade practices often in partnership with specific networks to which only sell the specific phone.
Well that is my rant for today... sorry for that. Yes I too have f*$cked my phone. Or ironically as we say here in Australia "rooted" my phone. I followed the guides as spelled out for rooting the Desire HD and getting S-off for use when loading a custom ROM. No warning that the custom ROM would lock out my R/W access to the system folder (Visionary+) or only allow me pseudo super user access with a patch. Only read later on that I should have done a radio s-off. DAMN.
I'm currently trying to figure out how to run this damn Nandroid backup so then I can try reflashing to an earlier ROM and then see if it will let me do a radio s-off. If I can't figure this Nandroid **** out soon I will just flash the old ROM. I am guessing it maybe like the Sony Ericsson phone I had last where once you flash to a newer CID that is security locked then you can't unlock it again even by trying to flash backwards.... will see if it's that's true or not... Having to re-install so many apps and settings each time I flash is getting annoying though...
BIGUPS TO ALL WORKING ON DEVELOPING A FIX! I ENCORAGE YOU!
Okay so just for the sake of it I flashed back to an older version of LeeDrOiD (1.2) which uses 1.32.405.6 ROM. I tied the 1 click Radio S-Off but still nothing. I'm still locked out. Damn! I really want R/W access to the system folder to delete apps. I can no longer get this access anymore with visionary+ or root explorer ect after annoying 1.72.405.3 ****ing things up. Maybe I'll try a different approach... maybe I'll just remove the apps I don't want directly from the ROM on my SD card and then re-flash the streamlined ROM. Tricky bastards HTC... let's see if that method works to remove all that crap like crackbook, twitter, usless HTC coin app that just crashes, friends status widget and other garbage that HTC has force fed me...

New To MyTouch3G - ROM Recommendations?

Hey guys...
My wife has a MT3G (T-Mobile US), and lately it has been running horrifically slow. I've been thinking about flashing a custom ROM to her handset, but I'm not sure if the benefits will be worth it.
I have an HTC HD2 that I've been flashing for a few months now (SD, NAND, etc), so I'm not new to flashing ROMS. I am, however, new to the MyTouch 3G. I've never really messed around with it. I just started reading some of the tutorials on here today...
Anyway, I'd like to get her phone to perform better.
Can anyone recommend a good ROM to flash for performance?
She doesn't need crazy apps or features. She has typical cell phone usage habits, like calling, texting, pictures, facebook, and a few games. That's about it.
Any help is appreciated!

Well... depending on what kind of MyTouch she has would depend on what would be best for her. Seeing that you are in the United States I will assume that you have either the standard 32B devices or the newer model with the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top (also known and referred to as Fender, 1.2, LE and "the-one-with-the-3.5mm-headphone-jack"). All honesty she might as well stick with stock for stability. Most custom roms are stable so don't get me wrong but some members complain that CM 6.1.0 rom (for example) makes their phone run slow. Others like the stock rom because they swear that it's faster. Being comletely honest here most of the MyTouch roms that you'll find here will be for the 32A type devices (foriegn hardware that would be incompatible with yours). This is because all of the 32B devices (USA devices) are also compatible with the G1/Dream. So instead of managing two different threads for two different devices for the same rom we just direct MyTouch 32B users to the G1/Dream section. I know it's really complicated but in a nutshell... if your MyTouch is ordered from T-Mobile USA then you should look toward the G1/Dream section for your roms because there are more posted there than there are here.
I'd have to say out of the custom ROM's I've tried, I like CyanogenMod 5.0.8 the best. That's the one I've kept on my wife's phone since I rooted it back in June. It's very stable and get's you the nicer feature's of Android 2.1. Honestly though, staying stock is probably the way to go. If you've got the older 32B then she should've already gotten the T-Mobile update to 2.2 and if not, then a call to Customer Service should get it. If you've got the 1.2 (3.5mm jack) they're going to start rolling out the update for it beginning tomorrow and running until the 1st of February. It may just be time to do a factory reset and if that doesn't improve performance, maybe use one of the one-click root methods, flash the custom recovery, then just flash an OC kernel.
Gio's 2.2.1 worked great and looked awesome on mine. Don has it right though, just wait a couple more days and get the stock 2.2.1 for your phone and clean it up and im sure it will play nicer.
Just a friendly word of advice. Just cause you are good at working another android phone doesn't mean another will be easy. I did lots of reading before and after rooting and flashing my phone. I still do.
Hell, now that there is mention of the OTA, now everyone wants to go back stock to get it. Instead of looking, cause its already out there, they keep wanting to know how.

Just a word of advice, if you regularly tether the phone to your computer for internet access and install the tmobile ota update, tethering will be disabled and you will have to pay $15/mo extra to keep tethering. A cs rep told me this a few months ago and that conversation was actually what finally made me root my mt3g, and I'm glad I did. I was using cm6.1 and speed was decent, but the latest nightly build had a huge increase in performance and I haven't had a single issue with stability. The new 32b 2.6.35.10 kernel has also been much faster and I have been getting WAY better reception by updating to the 2.22.28.25 radio. And universal androot method worked for me on the mytouch in the same way as any other device.

Thank you developers

Hey guys & gals,
I'm new to the rooting & custom rom scene, but I have been using the Google G2 since it's launch, before that was the G1 and Blackberries. I just cannot and do not want to do without a physical keyboard.
I love this phone so much that I have 2 brand new Desire Z's from Ebay sitting in storage just for when my current G2&DZ dies.
Touchscreen typing Sucks Out Loud.
Just wanna say a huge "Thank You" to the members, rom developers for your time and effort. While Gingerbread still does the job for me, having the ability to upgrade to newer OS definitely made me fall in love with my G2/DZ again.
BTW, for those of you using the Tmobile's G2, I discovered that the HSDPA 1700 / 2100 on it is just a software issue, after rooting and sim unlocking and flashing with the Cyankat Mod, I am able to access 3G/4G data on the networks that I use, which is HSDPA 900 / 2100, in Singapore and Malaysia.
Once again, cheers. I also have to get to 10 posts so I could post in the dev section, so I will be around for a bit :victory:
