Samsung Vibrant on AT&T - Vibrant General

Ok so my friend wants to gget the tmobile vibrant on tmobile and has the iphone 4 already*bomits* and well his wondering if there is a way to make the at&t sim card work on the vibrant
thanks

call tmobile for unlock code

the only issue I think is the fact that the Vibrant only supports one of the 3G Frequency ranges (1900mhz) that AT&T uses. So if their coverage on that frequency is poor in their home area, they'll likely be on Edge a lot. I may be mistaken but I think that's about the only significant issue (apart from getting it provider unlocked).

oo i see
thanks alot for the replies ..so if he doesnt need to unlock it? or it works just like that?

the phone will be provider locked to T-Mobile. It will have to be unlocked, which can usually be accomplished with a simple phone call to T-Mobile support.

It's not rocket science, if he wants to use his Vibrant on AT&T, he will need to be a T-Mobile customer for 45 days and then he will need an unlock code, it's not any more complicated than that.

Just tested my iphone4 SIM in Vibrant, it is working fine on 3G in Seattle area.
Of course I did unlock vibrant after requesting unlock code from TMO. They send me unlock code within 1 day after requesting it.

no you don't have to be a customer for 45 days...
If you buy it full, they don't care.

If he's signing up with T-Mobile he has to be a customer for 45 days before they will give him an unlock code.

May I ask why he doesn't just get the Captivate?

Yeah I'm surprised this thread went so many posts without anyway asking that. If you're on AT&T, you should get the captivate.

maybe he doesntlike the way it looks. thats the reason i got vibrant, i didnt like how captivate looks.

do wha??
thought the icrap4 sim was a microsim? unless you got an adapter or something.
btw, don't think you have 3g on a tmobile vibrant with at&t service. it ain't going to happen.

Actually, you can get 3G on the Vibrant with an AT&T sim card. The Vibrant supports AT&T and T-Mobile Frequencies. BUT the funny thing is that the captivate only supports the frequency for AT&T, not T-Mobile.

That thread saddens me cause I would rather of had a Captivate, based on looks.

I'm glad I read this thread. I'm actually thinking of unlocking the Vibrant for AT&T as well.
Doing so that I can buy the Blackberry Torch for my girl. Since she's on T-mobile, I'll have to unlock both the Torch and the Vibrant. Switch-a-roo.

AT&T made the Captivate ugly so that they could sell an iPhone4.

i'm using the vibrant on att&t and yes i do get 3g coverage
you would need to unlock the vibrant to work on att. T-mobile can provide you with a code (if you're a customer) but u can also get the unlock code from this seller
http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCK-Code-T-M...-Galaxy-S-/250670860362?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0
i had the code emailed within 24 hours

I have vibrant running on 3g as well. Just did a speed test and got 1781 kbps / 1353 kbps indoors to wichita, ks & 2478 / 1673 to denver, co.
I also got unlock code from ebay.
Still had 15 months on att contract but wanted to upgrade to android phone.

Will T-Mobile US HD2 work on ATT 3G?

Hi,
i dont want to use t-Mobile but not sure if HD2 can be used in ATT 3G. Is this possible?
Thanks.
No

No.
EDGE for AT&T.
No.
You'll need to buy one from Australia.
Look at at&t's 3G bands, and T-Mobile US 3G bands. Then you will understand why. . .
It may have both chips inside. We need dig it to find out.
Damn it Tito, you broke the trend!
my father is a businessman and he has a extra line open on his t-mobile family plan account that no one uses... it doesn't even have a phone ... he keeps it open just in case one of his clients need to use a phone number when they are on business ventures together.. either way.. i'm ATT and personally i love it.. i think ATT is one of the best phone service providers as far as reception and network speeds... customer service is another issue lol... but either way... as a student i'm spending way too much money on my phone bill.. $130 every month for ATT (I pay for it) My father actually wants me to go over to t-mobile and take that free line that he has open...
now my sister who lives in my apartment with me.. she has t-mobile and the reception at home totally sucks... its about 1-3 bars and the call quality isn't even that great... but if i decide to take that line.. that means i no longer have to pay for my phone bill.. which totally rocks... but i can't get over the fact that i'm gonna lose the ability of having full bars everywhere i went... the only reason why i actually decided to go through with it... is the HD2... if the HD2 was exclusively for ATT or something.. i would've just stuck with my 130 monthly bill... the fact that its exclusively for t-mobile makes my decision not as horrible...
yea.. pointless story... but i felt like sharing.. sorry for hijacking thread...

It doesn't. Supported frequencies on the US HD2 are 1700/2100, Euro & Asia spec one is 900/2100, the Telstra one is 850/2100 so that supports ATT 3G, and your only option.
You gotta pay to play.

UN-Friggin-Locked Baby!

Confirmed! I got a code from unlockadic on EBay and now have my Vibrant on ATT! FU TMobile!
Could you not have just bought a captivate?
Sure, but wanted a Vibrant and got one used much cheaper. Plus, I don't have a contract and don't want to have one.

Yeah I am confused, what is the benefit of having a vibrant on AT&T as opposed to just getting a captivate? Aren't you basically running the same phone but without 3G?
We're all happy for you, not sure why though.
Plus, I need to use it out of the country and att wouldn't unlock the Captivate for 10 months, even if bought at full price. What do you mean no 3g? I am using 3g on it no prob.
Being that there have been several people wanting to unlock it without success, I figured I would let everyone know that this source is confirmed to work. If you aren't concerned, why bother posting that you don't care?

Really? That is interesting I have always been told that the tmo and AT&T 3G networks weren't compatible, and my unlocked mytouch has no 3G access.
Edit; It isn't that I didn't care I was just confused at the benefit of doing it considering the availability of nearly the same device on the network you are using it on.
maybe you should give Simple Mobile a try since it's unlocked. $60 a month for unlimited everything, no contract. An additional $10 gets you international calling. Sorta like Boost Mobile, except you supply your own unlocked GSM phone. There's a one time $12.99 fee to get their SIM.
I went this route with my daughter as I was able to get her a cheap used slider phone for practically nothing.
And the reason why this worked for him is the Vibrant supports the UMTS1900 band that AT&T uses. One of the rare T-Mobile phones that does.
I am confused how you are using 3G? ATT uses 850mhz band for their 3G and the Vibrant only is able to use 3G on either 1700mhz or 2100mhz. Am I missing something here?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yep, 3g is working. The places I will be spending time in out of the USA don't have many options for service. Basically I buy prepaid sims and don't use data.
I have been with ATT so long that I still have the $15/mo unlimted data. Which is low enough to warrant leaving the account on while I am out of the country.
So to recap, ATT would not let me unlock the Captivate for 10 months even if I bought it outright. (I spent a long time talking to them to find this out as I was about to purchase a Captivate)
I do not want to get into a new contract
I need to use it out of the country.
I got a Vibrant used at a good deal.
That Simple Mobile looks like a good deal! If I didn't have the $15/mo unlimited data now, I would give them a shot.

I don't know but it is working. I have crappy service at my house (for all carriers) and it goes back and forth between "3G" and "E". When I have a descent signal, it sure seems pretty snappy so I believe it is 3G. I will try a speed test when I am in a good signal location. Aren't the Captivate and Vibrant the same hardware wise? Wouldn't it make sense that it would work with ATT 3G if that is the case?
They area similar hardware but the radios are carrier specific. I am pretty sure it won't work on 3G on ATT for the same reason the iPhone doesn't work on T-Mo's 3G. You must be seeing some sort of glitch on your phone. Definitely try a speed test while you are on 3G and let us know!

I am confused about the Vibrant's 3G capabilities on ATT network as well...
When I had my Nokia N95 unlocked it didn't work on TMO's 3G but did on ATT's network. The same deal with iPhones, they won't work on TMO's 3G and limited to EDGE.
Well, I will have TMO unlock my Vibrant and pop my blackberry's ATT card in to see what's the deal.
You should of got an iphone... Lol.
Good luck with working it all out!

Unlocking question- so sick of ATT

I really want to get one of these G2 phones. Att's phones are horrible and their service is going down hill as well.
THe only problem is their coverage in my area is far superior to TMO.
When the G2 is able to be unlocked how would popping a prepaid sim card in the G2 work?
Would the G2 all of a sudden be able to use all of the ATT network with only limitation being edge only? Or would I have to configure the phone to use ATTs data and or voice?
I'd like to just tape the pre-paid sim to the inside battery case and pop it in when needed, but if it's time consuming to make the swap I might reconsider.
I don't think the G2 supports AT&T's 3G bands, so while it will work you won't have any fast data. Why not just get an iPhone4? Granted it has iOS, but the hardware is better than anything Android. Having said that I still bought a G2 because I hate AT&T.

Thanks. I'm aware that I won't have 3G- that's not a problem since I'll only use the ATT sim card when I leave the city- not much.
That's why I ask if it's as simple as popping in the ATT sim card and being able to get SMS/MMS/Data etc without having to change a bunch of settings?
I'd just forward my TMO number to the ATT sim.

By this, I take it you mean to pay for 2 accounts? The only way you will have a TMo number is if you have service with them.
As for the settings, you could probably do it with an ATT sim if the radio bands overlap. As others have mentioned, you'll be limited to edge speeds at best, so it's probably a real bad idea.
Honestly, AT&T's network is pretty bad these days. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than Tmo.

When I leave town i hit edge speeds on ATT anyways so what's the diff??
I would have a primary TMO line and a pre-paid ATT sim with access to data for when I hit the few spots that TMO doesn't cover.
I simply want to know if you have to mess with data settings to get data while switching between phones.
Once you swap SIM cards the phone should pick up the network automatically, but is it really worth it to swap sim cards (which includes shutting the phone down, removing battery, replacing card, putting battery back in, starting up phone, as I'm sure you know) just to get service out in the middle of nowhere? I mean I understand the need to be always connected, but is it really worth it?
No you don't have to do any switching. Just initial setup. You have to acquire an unlock code from t-mobile so your ATT sim works on it. Once you do that you can do voice calls. You need to add the APN for ATT in the network settings.
The APN which stands for Access Point Name is basically a collection of settings and variables to allow the phone to connect to the data network.
Since the G2 will already have the T-Mobile settings you just need to get the settings for ATT from ATT, unless you google it.
Hope i helped.

Just so nobody gets confused. Of course you have to switch the sim card, but apart from that nothing else.
LOOK AT THE SIGNATURE LINE! YA BABY!
I plan on using the att card when I know ill be in a remote area without TMO voice or data for extended periods. Long drive, the beach, the mountain, camping etc. I wouldnt switch in a situation that only warranted the need to do a quick switch.

sgs2 working on U.S. tmobile 3g

I have a friend that is reporting his new sgs2 is working on H with tmobile in the states and getting constant 7mbs down.
How can that be right? Is it possible tmobile is testing out the att merge and they are letting users on att towers?
Whoa, that's weird... I'm actually getting my SG2 from UPS today and I'll test it out with my T-Mobile sim card that's currently in my Nexus S. If I can get HSPA with my T-Mobile sim, that would be pretty cool!
There's no SGS2 with T-Mobile U.S.' AWS bands. It's hardware that's incompatible, not software. He's probably talking about the Galaxy S 4G.

Wow.
SGS2 on T-Mobile US - 250K sounds about right for EDGE.
Sensation on T-Mobile US - 1MB is ridiculously low so something's wrong.
SHW-M250L on Verizon - You can roam with an account from another CDMA carrier but, unless something's changed, Verizon is a closed network meaning you can't bring your own equipment.
Good luck.

t-mobile phone on at&t 3/4g???

I have a G2x and have NOOOOO data where I live currently. I tried to cancel my contract (because I was told being in the military you send a copy of your orders you can cancel without a fee) but t-mobile won't do it.
I have the G2x set to roam and I pick up some edge service (I assume at&t)
I know the G2x doesn't have at&ts 4g band.
I read an article about the HTC amaze being able to hop on at&t and pick up 4g signal. Is there any old cheap T-mobile phone I can unlock to pick up at&t's 3g with ? I don't need 4g, I just want some service.
I have a family plan with my wife and I can't afford $400 in termination fees and $200-$400 in phones with verizon. Any valid input would be greatly appreciated.
No there is nothing cheap that will do that, and no phone will do it with the T-mobile SIM card in it. Doesn't the G2X have wi-fi calling? The Amaze and Tmobile GS2 can have ATT radios flashed to them, but they will only pick up 3G and 4G with an ATT sim.
No cell company will cancel your contract with military orders. If you show them orders for deployment or an extended TDY they will suspend your contract, but not cancel it.
Thanks for the response. There was a guy in my shop that said he didn't have service at work and they let him off (I guess the rep has a choice?)
As far as wifi calling I just put gingerbread on today so now I have wifi calling. My wife has an old POS phone (because tmobile upgrade her contract when they weren't supposed to...don't get me started on that I'm am SOOO mad a T-mobile.)
So I can't buy a AT&T 3g phone unlock it and put a T-mobile sim in? So I get access to the data I'm paying for every month?

I know the G2x doesn't have the proper radio to pick up at&t 3g/4g. I was wondering if any other phone did. I read this article
http://phandroid.com/2011/11/08/t-mobiles-htc-amaze-4g-compatible-with-att-3g4g/
It states that somebody on this forum actually used the tmobile htc amaze on at&t 3g/4g network. Is there any truth to this ?
ahhhhhh....I just noticed it said with at&t sim card. Setting the phone to roam with a tmobile sim would essentially do the same thing no ?
Have you gotten the updated SIM card?

The T-mobile Galaxy S II, Amaze and Galaxy Nexus will all work and give you HSPA+ on both AT&T and T-mobile assuming the devices are unlocked
What about trading someone plans or something? Like I'm thinking of trading for a T-Mobile phone since I got the $30 prepaid plan but only get Edge on my D3.
