Wired Tether for everyone? - Droid Eris Android Development

I've always liked to have this handy, especially back in the old Starbucks days when you HAD to pay to use their WiFi lol, but it seems like no one quite figured out how to enable Wired Tethering for most of our Eris roms. But Saturn2K came out with a fix for his Evo about a month ago and I just tried it on the Eris running PlainJane2.0 and it worked So heres the link if anyone would like to give it a try, maybe someone could clean it up a little and maybe implement into the apk or something
Edit: Saturn updated it!

It works! FINALLY!
Good find, I was getting tired of PdaNet if only this could be added into the wired tether app we'd be set for good.
I'm using White Widow 4.6 so I'm guessing it will work on others.

Perfect, this was just what I was about to hunt for. Thanks for making it easy to find.

I tried to make it catchy so everyone would look haha

just to let everyone know, this works wonders on kaosfroyo v27
thanks ref for passing this on to the rest of us.

Ive been using wired tether apk for a minute and never had a problem.. In fact I just flashed Kaos28 today and reinstalled wired tether apk with out doing any of this and my wired tether works perfectly fine... Wierd that people are having problems I was unaware..

thanks nice find....

A patch has been found in issue 21 for wired tether and was compiled however the link is lost and there is no way to obtain the apk anymore.
If a super awesome someone has the skills could you please add the patch and compile an apk for us?

Just confirming this works on the original Plain Jane by jcase. I also applied the July OTA (via recovery menu) and have the newest radio, if that matters at all. Would be nice to get the fix compiled into wired tether.

That would be double awesome!

Here's Alex C. Hofbauer's patched apk, posted by Saturn2k in the Evo forums.

Sweet. I can confirm that the new apk is working great on the Eris!

still best app there is
yeah small updates, i think i'll keep my current version since its not broken.
Hopefully they make a version to support Froyo. I know it's kinda redundent but I like the interface of wireless tether, and the fact that I can use internet on the phone while i'm tethered, on froyo it locks the phone out of using internet when wifi tether is on.
i still can't get the old wifi tether app to work with my evo. maybe i can get this new version to work

anyway to make this work if u dont have root? topic creator stated it wasnt necessary however when i installed and ran the program, it said i didnt have the required kernels and that i didnt have root.

Could someone please root my phone (Boston and Haverhill MA)

It doesnt look easy...Could someone local please root my phone for me
its easy. i mean real easy. i did it with no problems. read the wiki. i was scared at first but with all the info thats in the wiki it was a snap. i was rooted and had clockwork installed in less than 20 minutes. you can do it. just trust yourself

Lol...I just want free hotspot..all that clockwork talk is over my head.
It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.
There's a few apps that pop up in the market for wifi tether. Which one should we get?

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

[Q] Anyway to get the my-water live wallpaper working?

I was wondering if anyone has this live wallpaper working on the a500. I saw its available in one of the roms but I just bought my tablet yesterday and haven't got to that point yet. Anyone know where I can find a working version of this?

I don't use the my-water wallpaper but do use the Asus weather widget. There is a post in the Xoom forums (I believe thats where I got it) that has a download link for 2 versions of the my-water and weather apk; I had to use the signed one to make it work the other is unsigned. Hope it helps.

I'm rooted so don't know if it will work without. I believe it should though. I used ES File explorer: just navigate to where you downloaded/dropbox etc. and click it. I had to use the 'signed' version but it works no problem. Good Luck- hope it helps.
Okay thanks...ill try when I get off work. I probably should just root, as it looks pretty easy.

It should work without root - though I could only speak to the one I downloaded - I also got the Asus Weather widget installed as well, as I understand it, it was signed.
I don't use the Live Wallpaper anymore because I really didn't enjoy it as a background but I do recall it working fine.
I got it to work. I used the signed one. I did root beforehand so not sure if that mattered or not but glad its working

Got Motoprint to Work!

I have a rooted wifi xoom U.S. and I could not get motoprint to work from the xoom family dump or the zone rom. I found a droid3 (edit not droidx sorry) dump (don't remember where sorry) and pulled the motoprint apk and it installed by regular install, I did not have to copy to system directory. The program now shows in my apps and is available as a print choice.
I am not by a printer and have not actually printed. If someone actually tries to use please post back.
All credit goes to the person who did the dump, I am just posting the apk.

The one in the market if the dev is Motorola Mobility, its the legitimate one. Won't work on all printers so you might have to use the host file.

help with wifes epic!

What I am looking for is stock rooted gigerbread rom that has working wifi tethering. my wife's phone hasn't been updated because I rooted her phone and she uses barnacle for free tethering. i read that barnacle doesn't work on gingerbread. also Would be sweet if I could odin it. Have tried in the past to put custom roms on wifes epic and have had varied degrees of success. I have an evo running synergy so i am familiar with rooting and changing roms there but seems to be easier with odin on epic. Thanks for all of your help.
CleanGB BML or Legendary would work great for you. They both can be found in Development subforum. Read through the threads for each to see which one you like better.

I've tried a bunch of different ones out and am in the same situation as you... it was rooted for the sole purpose of free tethering (and to remove the samsung bloatware).
The new cleanGB rom is the best i've used, not the fastest but everything works and has been perfectly stable. for tethering i use open garden wifi - this is no longer listed on my market but if you do a google search for it, you can install it directly from their website for free. that's the best/easiest/most stable tether program i've used.

Cleangb has wifi hotspot built in, and I thought it does usb tethering as well. No 3rd party app needed. Anytime an app is pulled from the market, you really have to wonder why, and be cautious DLing directly from their website.

+1 on the CLeanGB BML. I've had an issue or too fiddling with undervolting but other than that, it just works and looks nearly stock. I'm not a big tetherer but I seem to recall doing a USB tether a while back and Wireless Hotspot hack is built-in. It also included a few other "nice" hacks that I like. Alternatively, as was mentioned, the android wi-fi tether app worked well when I did use it.

The wireless hack works great, its been built into my roms for some time now. But occasionally I still have to use alternate tether apps, as things like my TouchPad can't see Sprint Hotspot for some dumb reason.
