registered just to find some help with this...
just got a N1, used to have a G1. both rooted, and i'm trying to migrate my mmss and smss to the N1. copied the mmssms.db out of the G1 and saved it to the sdcard. placing it in the N1's /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db (via Better Terminal Emulator Pro) does not restore the texts. could this be a permissions issue or did they move the mms and sms database?
How does this fit in the Development Section? I am not trying to be rude... but...

Solution
This is because you do not have busybox installed yet (cyan will be posting later). You can push it via adb using the following command:

Reboot your N1 after you push to see your messages. Worked like a charm for me.

The problem is that there is no Q&A section and it makes more sense that the General section since it will take a dev's solution to fix the issue. A Q&A section needs to be added.

sorry, i figured this was more tech-y to go in the General section.
also, i'm able to copy the mmssms.db to the location, but after restarting my messaging app crashes (both the default and handcent).
permissions on my mmssms.db file after the copy are:
----rwxr-x 1 0 0 (size) (date) mmssms.db
i'm able to chmod 777 this file and restart and see it, but i assume that the "correct" way to fix this would be to chown to whoever is user "1001" and group "1001" ("1001" because that's the group and owner of the other file in this folder)
quick unix question i guess: how can i find out what "1001" refers to, as "chown 1001 mmssms.db" gives me a "No such user '1001'"?
also, it looks like the MMSs (which were what i was actually trying to save) don't get restored. causes a force close in Messaging and a "Handcent cannot display this" in Handcent.
in case anyone wanted to know. i guess that single database doesn't keep the actual images.

The other easy solution is MyBackup Pro. If you don't want to shell out the $5 you can get a 30 trial of the full version (all features work) for free in the Market. It will backup and restore both SMSes and MMSes. Hope this helps.
one of the comments says that even with the 30 day trial you can't restore to a different phone, it has to be to the same phone the backup is from. plus i'd really just kinda like to learn
Hmm...the main reason I wanted to root the phone was to be able to push my old mmssms.db file onto the new Nexus, interesting that it doesn't work.
The db file is just a sqlite database, I wonder if maybe the database schema has changed slightly, hopefully I can pull the one from the Nexus today at work and compare it to my backed up G1 db...

actually it was my mistake, it works, just so far not the MMS part. copy the mmssms.db to your new phone, restart. i had to change the permissions to 777 (because i don't yet know who to chown to). is the mmssms.db supposed to hold the actual images too? do you know how that's supposed to work?

thanks for the suggestions. one of the comments says that restored MMS's can't be viewed.
this is the only problem i'm running into doing it manually. i just need to know where the mms's are kept in the system or why they won't read from mmssms.db...
ok, if anyone cares, i've successfully manually moved my SMSes and MMSes from my rooted G1 to my rooted N1.
had to use ADB.
used superuser'd terminal in the G1 to copy the following to the sdcard (though i suppose you could ADB pull them off the G1)
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/app_parts/*
copied them to my comp
then
adb push c:\mmssms.db /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
adb push c:\app_parts /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/app_parts/
or somethin like that. basically move mmssms.db and all the files in app_parts to the nexus one, same directory.
if you don't do it through adb, then you might have some permission errors and the messaging apps would force close. just chmod 777 all of these files (and the app_parts folder) unless you know who to chmod to (cuz i didn't) and it should work. let me know if you do it that way, cuz i haven't tested it.
edit: after this, sending an MMS would force close, and trying to download one would fail. back in the adb shell:
cd /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/
chown radio app_parts
chmod 771 app_parts
i suspect that this is because i had created the app_parts folder via ADB instead of letting the system create one when the first mms is sent/received on an N1. either way, afaik all mmses work now.

[Removing bad instructions]
The method I posted works great, as long as you never try to send any texts. Once I sent some, they ended up in random order in the thread, then the phone started spewing multiple copies of the same message, at least 15 or so to my wife in about 30 seconds, I had to go into airplane mode to stop them, and then just restored from a nandroid backup. And I don't have unlimited texts...oops...

I am wondering how to remove some things that came with CM6 when I installed it. When I go to applications > manage applications I cannot delete anything other than the things I've installed. Here is a list of things that I want to delete.

All the wallpapers
Home screen tips
I don't have a use for any of these and would rather free up the space and keep down the clutter from things I don't use.

deleting mms.apk will remove your ability to receive texts. i know cause i tried to replace it with handcent at one point. removing music and amazon should be fine.
Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try to remove the Amazon mp3 and Music now. What do you think would happen if I move the apps to my SD card and then access and delete them from my computer? Does this run the same risk of instability issues? In theory, I should be able to back them up on my computer and restore them if things go wrong, agree?

Ya. You can back them up to your SD card or PC, whichever is easier.

Here's what I did along with some instructions from attn1. (he's the best!) Maybe this information will be helpful to someone. I am running CM6 A012 on my phone.
I booted up the Ubuntu LiveCD that I used to root my phone.
Rebooted my phone into Clockwork Recovery... power & volume down > wait for system check > Recovery
Once in ClockWork Recovery I linked my phone via USB to my computer and clicked 'partitions menu' then 'mount /system'
I accessed the terminal in Ubuntu and I couldn't get permissions to access the phone's files
In terminal, attn1 had me type the following commands before I could access the app list.
1) echo $PATH
2) sudo su
3) cd /opt/android-sdk-linux _86/tools
4) ./adb kill-server
5) ./adb remount
After that, to list the apps type: ./adb shell ls -l /system/app
To remove apps type: ./adb shell rm /system/app/filename.apk
To check if they're removed type: ./adb shell ls /system/app/filename.apk
I removed Music.apk, com.amazon.mp3.apk, and Browser.apk. When trying to remove Gmail.apk, Ubuntu wouldn't let me do anything else. I am assuming that the LiveCD has a time limit on it for the trial version. I then unmounted my phone on ClockWork and the rebooted it. The apps that I removed are gone from my phone and everything related to them still works fine.

I will do some more research and try to remove other .apk files in a couple hours. I didn't try the 'move to SD' method that I mentioned above and would still like someone's opinion on it.
I forgot to mention. It's probably best to do a nandroid back up before doing all this. I didn't do one that time and will do it next time. I will also leave a list of everything I removed for future reference. If anyone else has a list, I would appreciate seeing that. This is my first time doing all this so I am constantly bugging attn1 for knowledge.

You know, that's a much easier idea. Even testing by taking one .apk out at a time would be faster, I think. And my Winrar is expired and it still let's remove files! I would just have to remember to save a backup on the .zip before and after removing each .apk.

FYI there is no expiration on the Ubuntu LiveCD. If it stopped working for you, it was for some other reason.
Thanks for correcting that attn1. I haven't tried to do anything further yet, but will after a nap. Does anyone know if you edit the ROM in Winrar, do you have to sign it or w/e?

When I modified both of N1 and Aria CM rom, I don't have to sign it again.
Ok here is the basics of what I did. I didn't modify the CM .zip from my computer because I thought it would take more time to nandroid backup and reflash the ROM. If I install a new ROM, I am more likely to do that. I loaded the Ubuntu LiveCD and proceeded with what I was doing before. I still had to put in every command that attn1 taught me.
Here is a list of everything I removed.
- Music.apk Successful. No problems.
- com.amazon.mp3.apk Successful. No problems.
- Browser.apk Successful. No problems.
- Gmail.apk Successful. No problems.
- CMWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- LiveWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk successful except the 'Many' live wallpaper option doesn't load without this. I didn't care cause I was getting rid of all of them.
- LiveWallpapersPicker.apk Deleting this changes some things. When you go to menu >wallpaper it takes me directly to Astro File Manager instead of the wallpaper menu. I can still access and change my wallpaper though the Gallery app
I didn't remove Camera.apk because I read somewhere that it will mess up your camera even if you have another app install. I also didn't remove any Google apps yet. I might try those any other day. They aren't bothering me right now.
I was thinking about moving my nandroid backup to my computer to save space, but I didn't. I realized that if my SD is full, I won't have space on it to move it back when I needed it.

For Music, I'm using Mixzing. For Browser, I'm using Dolphin HD. For E-mail, I'm using K9. For Messaging, I'm using Handcent. For Camera, I have a bunch of different apps.
I heard that your camera and messaging won't work without the 'Camera' and 'Messaging' that are currently on the phone. I'm assuming that your email won't work without the 'Email'. I deleted Gmail without any problems though. All the rest that I removed were just Wallpapers that came on the phone. I can pull up the wallpapers that I want from gallery still.
I don't think I freed up much memory space. My main concern was to get all those 'Music' widgets off my widget list and make everything else less cluttered.
So you can still get and send email from your email account after removing gmail or do you have to buy/download another email client. I am trying to figure out the differences between the gmail and email apps at the moment. The email app seems to have changed in Froyo to something less than it was. Are you using the standard "email" app after you delete gmail app?

What I did before I installed the addon apps is opened the zip file and just deleted the apk files I didnt want.
I forgot to delete Twitter tho. Doh.

I think I read somewhere that Skyfire is meant to run on top of the default browser, kind of like an add-on.
For the stock browser, download cm6 and unzip it. Then go into the unzipped file >system>app>browser.apk. Just push Browser.apk to /system/app on your phone via adb and you're good to go.
EDIT: just realized you might not be running cm6. Not sure if theres a difference between the browser in cm6 and the one from the stock rom. If there is a difference you just follow the same procedure from whichever rom you're running.
Hey guys. I'm trying to push a libwebcore.so file from one .zip onto my current MyTouch phone that has CM 6 on it. The reason why I'm doing this is to have the Arabic browser support. This file causes the letters to be connected which they are in text messages, but not the browser. I heard pushing the libwebcore.so from a downloaded source (or from a rom .zip that has it from another rom) will do the trick.
However, everytime I try to push it to /system/lib it gives me an error saying that there is no room on the device. That's pretty unprobable since I'm sure I have a lot of space. How do I fix this and sucessfully push the file?

Do "adb shell df -h" to see how much room is available in your system partition. You may have to remove some unused system apps to make room.
I'm trying that now...but is it safe to delete the current libwebcore.so now and add the new one? If so what's the command. Also, if the libwebcore.so was for a testing version of CM 6 (specifically RC3), will it still work?
Also, is there a way to take some space from other parts of the system?
First of all, i'm going to move this to General since I fail to see how this is regarding the Development of anything. Some good information, but not related to Development.
Secondly, have you considered performing a nandroid backup, booting to recovery, mount the /system directory, then 'adb shell rm /system/lib/webcore.so' to remove your file then 'adb push webcore.so /system/lib'
Also, if you use the file directly from SOURCE it may not work since it may need to be compiled first. I'm not sure about that though since I've never tried it.
If any of the above goes wrong you can always nandroid restore and try again.
I personally use Clockwork Recovery since you can restore specific partitions individually (such as System) so it saves time.

i have a rooted droid x running the version above. i am not interested in running custom roms, i just want root so i can run whatever apps i want to. after rooting i downloaded wireless tether and the free version of titanium backup. wireless tether is my only means of connecting my computer to the internet. i ran a complete backup after downloading titanium backup. just messing around one day i removed cardock and blockbuster from the phone. i have restored blockbuster but can not get cardock restored. my phone has downloaded the latest ota update and wants me to install it. from what i have read, i will need cardock restored. is this correct and if so how can i get it back? i am fairly good with a puter but new to android. i rooted using doroot for windows. all help is much appreciated.

2.3.15 is soooo yesterday
look into some deblured Rom's. Easier to get rid of the Crapware with a Rom than one at a time. that could cause other issue.
IMHO there are easier tools to root like 4Zroot.
Your heading in the correct direction keep on reading the threads and different sites.

Let me know what happens... I'm in the same boat. No roms, just titanium back up and wireless tether ( which I never use ) Titanium Pro allows you to freeze apps so they dont run and you dont have to delete them.

According to droid x forums, if your rooted, and have all the original apk/apps on the phone you should be able to update to 2.3.34. Make sure that every setting is stock too. No frozen apps, etc... You will lose root. Then they recommend Z4root to re-root.
Successful install
I was running 2.3.15 rooted, no leak, installed 2.3.34 OTA with no problems.
I used Z4Root 1.3 to re-root my droid x. If you were previously rooted you should select the unroot option from Z4Root first. Phone will restart and then select permanent root. Should be good to go after that...
I did it the hard way... wish I had un-rooted first!
Thanks for helping eyepopper. I downloaded the apk file but it would not install. I assume I need to move it manually but don't know where it goes. The odex file opened when I selected it and looks like code. Not sure how to get it where I need it either. I am using astro for my files.

Are you using the phones browser? Try going the chad website thru the phones browser (I use dolphin browser) download it to the phone. Then run the apk thru the browser, go one step further and make sure that you checked off to allow other non market apps to run in applications. Astro app is the problem most likely.
i am using the stock browser but the page just reloads when i select the apk file and opens a window showing gibberish when i select the odex file. i have the 2 files on my sd card under titanium backup and was able to copy and paste them from /sd/titanium backup to /sd but i can't get them to copy and paste to the system folder or the framework folder. as soon as i leave /sd the paste function grays out. looks like your are the only one willing to help me and i am very grateful for it. i need to go on and get this done and be thru with it so i can enjoy the holidays. can you meet me in a chat somewhere and see if we can get this done? pm me ur info if you can. thanks again...

Ok you will need to connect your phone to your computer. Open a command prompt and type the following commands:
*make sure your phone's usb mode is Charge Only
1) type: Adb devices (make sure your phone gets listed as a device)
2) type: adb shell (press enter)
3) type: su (press enter)
4) type: mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock 4 /system
I'm not sure where you have the cardock.apk on your sdcard, but this next step will require you to know the path to your .apk
5) type: cp /mnt/sdcard/<path to CarDock.apk> /system/app/CarDock/apk
if just on the sdcard then it would be "cp /mnt/sdcard/CarDock.apk /system/app/CarDock.apk
6) type: cd /system/app
7) type: chmod 644 CarDock.apk
8) type: exit
you may need to type exit one more time, but when you return to a normal command prompt, type the following:
adb reboot.
Make sure to take a backup before you do any of this, as if you mess anything up in /system your phone can wind up hosed....
Hope this helps. As a last resort, you could always take a backup of your phone, and then perform the 2.3.15 full sbf and restore the apps that way (make sure to perform a factory reset as well. Then you would be able to perform the OTA update and shouldn't have any problems.

i downloaded root explorer and was able to move my files successfully from my sd card to the system apps folder but could not get them to show up afterwards in titanium backup. i figured since they were files i manually removed from tb they were prolly named wrong so to be right i went to this link and downloaded the entire zip. i was then able to place those 2 files in the /system/app folder and after rebooting they showed up in tb. finally...yea!!! ok, i remember reading somewhere they needed to be in the /system/framework folder as well. does anyone know if this is fact? if the update looks for them there and doesn't find them it won't install correctly or at all, so i'm told.

possibly with Root Explorer tool you could change the permissions of the moved apps to rwrr.
this way you phone can see them and use them.
Kdinc is right about changing the permissions using root explorer. Make sure to set the as user: read and write, group: read, and other: read. Should look like this after: rw-r--r--

Hi All,
I set out to flash my tablet back to stock with the goal of copying some of the awesome asus-specific widgets and applications and installing them back on my tablet after I re-rooted/modded it. I accomplished part of this goal by finding some of the .apk's I wanted, like the Asus weather & battery widgets, the Supernote.apk, anda few others (I still wasn't able to find the Swype Keyboard.apk file)
Anywho, I tried to install the .apk's on my tablet after re-installing cm9 and rooting it but it just says "Application not installed". Anyone have any ideas? And can anyone elaborate on how to copy that swype keyboard APK that I desperately want? I found the other .apk's in the /system/app folder but swype wasn't there.
My other questions relate to CM9:
1) is there any way to decrease the boot time for CM9, or at least customize the boot screen?

Hi All,
I set out to flash my tablet back to stock with the goal of copying some of the awesome asus-specific widgets and applications and installing them back on my tablet after I re-rooted/modded it. I accomplished part of this goal by finding some of the .apk's I wanted, like the Asus weather & battery widgets, the Supernote.apk, anda few others (I still wasn't able to find the Swype Keyboard.apk file)
Anywho, I tried to install the .apk's on my tablet after re-installing cm9 and rooting it but it just says "Application not installed". Anyone have any ideas? And can anyone elaborate on how to copy that swype keyboard APK that I desperately want? I found the other .apk's in the /system/app folder but swype wasn't there.
My other questions relate to CM9:
1) is there any way to decrease the boot time for CM9, or at least customize the boot screen?

I haven't tried this, but it may work. If you have ADB on your computer, try doing an adb push [name of file].apk /system/app/
If you can't do that, try copy/pasting them there using a root explorer on your device itself. Make sure the permissions are set properly (I don't remember what they are off the top of my head).
After doing that, reboot. See if it works.
As for your CM Questions:
1) I'm not sure if you can reduce the time. For customizing the animation, look at something like Rom Toolbox Pro (which also includes a root explorer like I mentioned above).
2) All CM9 TF300T downloads are located here: http://get.cm/?device=tf300t RC1 is listed there so I'm assuming you did something wrong (what's the error you get?)
3) Did you re-root? I'm not sure I understand.

I apologize for the vagueness of my original post. I made this thread in anticipation of flashing everything back to stock, trying to copy over those Asus-specific .apk's (which I managed to do), and then re-rooting/re-flashing CM9.
I flashed the .30 firmware to get back to stock and found the Asus widgets & apk's I was looking for in the /system/app directory. After some bootloops and other fun, I was able to flash back to CM9 and when I tried to install the .apk's I immediately get the message "The Application was not installed"
Of the asus items I wanted, Supernote and Polaris Office were my top two picks, and I was able to acquire Supernote through 3-rd party means and install it. So I'm stoked to have Supernote on a CM9-flashed tablet. I wasn't able to find Polaris Office so I hope to at least be able to find a work-around to install that.
In response to #3 - yes I re-rooted my tablet (lost root with the .30 firmware) and previously I was able to browse the root directory of my tablet while it was connected to my computer. Now, I can only browse the SD card. I still haven't figured out a solution to this, but I just transfer files to my memory card and then to my tablet from there. I'm looking into how to do OTA file transfers via bluetooth or wi-fi, if at all possible.

So did you try what I suggested in my post (pushing the files to /system/app on your tablet, rather than trying to install them through File Browser or whatever)?
I'm not sure if they rely on any custom Asus framework stuffs, like with many other OEMs. I personally doubt it because Asus barely changes anything. I think it *should* work, but can't guarantee it.
The easiest way to get the files to /system/app (if you're not very ADB or tech. savvy) is to download a root explorer (like Rom Toolbox Pro has, for example) and copy all the .apks that you want from your sdcard to /system/app.

I haven't tried pushing the files via ADB yet. I just wiped out my computer so I need to re-install the drivers to get the tablet recognized and/or the the Android SDK.
In the 3rd point of your point, do you mean my external SD card or the internal memory?
the Transformer Pad has a good portion of internal memory partitioned as an sdcard and mounts it at /sdcard/. I haven't used an external SD card with my tablet yet. Either one should work.
I also found out that Polaris Office has some library files that you probably should grab as well. You can find them at:
/system/lib/libpolarisoffice_tablet.so
/system/lib/libpolarisofficedump.so
/system/lib/libtfapps-polaris.so
/system/lib/libtflua-polaris.so

That's awesome, thanks. If I'm able to get this working I will post a guide for others to follow. I ended up just signing up for the swype beta (which I think is stupid since I paid for that app when I bought my tablet, shouldn't have to get a reduced version)
I was able to find a working supernote.apk app on a 3rd-party website and it installed and worked perfectly.
My other issue I'm having is I try to push the files with ADB and it tells me my tablet is read-only? it gives that same message no matter which directory I try to push to. I have the superuser app and have root, but superusers' log shows the 'adb shell' is consistently being denied root permission (if i try to do su or something similar). Any thoughts?

You need to remount your system as read-write. Trying doing an adb remount. If that doesn't work, try typing the following into a terminal emulator:
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system

Try ADB pushing again after that.
if you are able to install the apps by adb push. then maybe a .zip file can be created and use CWM to install all the stock apps.

Well part of the issue is that I can't "su" while in adb shell. It says permission denied. When I type ADB devices normally, it'll list my device. But when I'm in "adb shell" it doesn't show anything. "adb remount" gives me the message "error: device not found".
Any other suggestions?

That's weird. I've never seen that before. Are you certain that your adb drivers are installed properly? You can always use a terminal emulator on your device itself to remount the system as read/write and then use adb afterwards.

I'm pretty sure my drivers are installed correctly. Everything shows up in device manager, "adb devices" lists my device, fastboot flashes files just fine, so yea.
And yea I have the terminal emulator on my tablet and I've used it before for some stuff (installing Ubuntu) so I will try the steps you guys have mentioned. I'm in the process of trying out some other ROM's right now (Hydro atm, and then probably CleanROM) so once I go back to stock and have access to the appropriate files I'll try these steps.
