Froyo e-mail apk? - Vibrant General

Anybody know whether the Froyo e-mail APK is likely to work on a rooted-but-otherwise-stock 2.1 Vibrant?
The Samsung-provided mail client is pretty unreliable. Heck, it might be worse than the Google mail client. It tells me I have new e-mails when I don't, and it sometimes fails to download mail from one account or another for hours at a time. I was having zero problems with mail hitting the same accounts running Froyo (CM6) on my G1.
Or -- if nobody knows, if somebody can get their hands on that APK I'll install it and try it.

Try downloading the Nexus One CM6 RC, and extract the desired Mail APK. I can't tell you whether or not it will function properly (and you may need to uninstall the Samsung Mail first), but that's where I'd begin.

have you tried k9 email?

Finally sat down and gave this a shot. Dropping the Nexus Email.apk directly into system/app (after saving the stock apk and odex) didn't work. Moving it to the sdcard and running something like appInstaller didn't work ("problem with image").
For those suggesting K9, I tried it quite awhile back on the G1 and didn't like it. And since it's based on the original Android mail app, and I found THAT to be flaky and unreliable, I can't say I have a lot of hope for it's future value to me. But maybe I'll give it another shot though, Samsung's email app is so bad it's actually causing business issues (e.g. costing me money); I think it might be worse than my 1.x mail clients.

Even worse issues on my Samsung Captivate and stock froyo mail...with eclair setup to corporate exchange server, I had email and calendar events working great, but now after froyo flash + minor [non-mail] mods, calendar won't sync pretty much at all from my company's outlook server (and yes, I have it setup properly).
Anyone else having froyo + Outlook exchange server problems w/ calendar? Missing my meetings is fun for a while, but it's starting to hurt

Make sure you set the permissions right for the email.apk. I used the gingerbread email.apk on a rooted tmobile 2.1 rom and didn't seem to have any issues. Also make sure you restart after moving it to system/apps and clear cache and settings in the email under manage applications.

Try improved email
Improved Email for Android | AppBrain.com
Worked great for me on 2.1 and still using on 2.2
NO issues.

Are you getting work email (and calender) pushed to your phone from an Exchange server?
Are you running in Vibrant or some other HW?

QTek 9100 ActiveSync 4 Problem

hi,
Just received my QTek 9100 (talk about the power of online shopping: ordered yesterday from expansys germany, was shipped yesterday from france, and arrived today in austria ), and I'm having a problem with ActiveSync 4: it won't allow me to sync with outlook.
When I first connect my device to AS, I get the following error message:
You will be able to synchronize only files, folders, and other non-Outlook items if you continue.
To synchronize E-mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes with this computer, do the following:
Disconnect the device, install and run Outlook, and then reconnect the device and complete the Synchronization Setup Wizard.

I've tried reinstalling AS4, rebooting, etc, doesn't matter, I always get the same message, whether Outlook is running or not.
System is Win XP SP2 (with all patches), Outlook 2003 (also with all updates). I have been successfully syncing an old Ipaq 2210 with AS3.8 until yesterday. I also deinstalled the old AS3.8 before installing AS4.
Any ideas on what I might do to get that working properly?
thanks,
tom.
Try AS 4.1. People have reported numerous problems with 4.0.
I found this too, with my Jasjar. I used the Add/Remove Programs control panel in Windows XP to remove the Outlook 2003 Junk Email patch. After that it worked fine.

Yea thanks, that did the trick!
Installed AS4.1 beforehand, but that didn't change anything. So now I can sync, but will get more spam.. hmm
Unfortunately that didn't help for very long... Now I'm getting another sync error:
Code:
Synchronization cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the network and access information.
Needless to say, everything works just fine in Outlook, and rebooting didn't help at all. Using AS 4.1.1 Build 4807, and Outlook 2003 with all updates minus the October Junk mail patch.
Any more ideas?
UPDATE:
I found another Outlook Junk email update that is apparently part of Office 2003 SP2.. removed that as well, now it seems to work again. Just what is it with AS4 and Outlook Junk email updates?
Anyone here syncing the wizard directly with an Exchange server? Is that a better route to go (less hassles and problems)?
My problems concerning 4.0 was due to the fact of a firewall (zonealarm).
If I disable zonealarm, no problems at all, if its enabled: No synchronisation.
In Zone Alarm I put Activesync in the trusted zone and have not had any problems with it since then.
Unfortunately the sync problem returned after a reboot.. same as the last message (won't post that stupid too wide screenshot again, see my previous post).
So I'm back again to looking for solutions.. damn AS4.

push of choice?

just curious what everyone is using for push? i was using mail2web but was seeing serious battery drain when it was on. anyone else seeing this? anyone use something with more success?

I'm using mail2web as well, but I've not got it set for push, but scheduled sync.
V
Reno, what do u consider battery drain? I also use mail2web push and if I use my phone normally and don't surf for more than 2 hrs a day, the battery lasts the entire day. That's fantastic in my book.
Does your battery not last that long?
well i guess my issue is then that im surfing more throughout the day. that has to be why im seeing more drain.
i just use the messaging app that comes with windows
I don't think your battery drain is dependent on the provider you use for push email. It has more to do with the constant GPRS connection and the data that is transferred. I am not really sure about this, but perhaps the interval that is used to check for new mails is very short, so the phone sends a lot of data? Perhaps this interval is dependent on the provider after all, could it be that mail2web contacts your phone more than other providers do? On the other hand, it only needs to contact your phone when a new mail comes on their servers, so I don't see the need for constantly contacting your phone. the other way around, your phone only needs to contact their exchange server to sync when something changes on your phone in the calendar, tasks, etc. Why would mail2web keep contacting your phone to see if something has changed when the device should be able to send the message to the server that there are changes and a sync is needed?
not a lot of help from me I'm afraid, sorry!
I'm using mail2web as well. I have it set for push ("as items arrive") and the battery life isn't really that much shorter than normal. I just put the phone on the charger after 36 hours of moderate to high use, including 2-3 hours of gaming) and had %12 when I connected it.
Do you keep the clock speed at 200mhz? Are you using wifi or bluetooth excessively? My use was at 200mhz and with wifi and bluetooth disabled.
fwiw, I'm using Summiter's AKU2.3 rom "test2"
I think it's a no-brainer that direct push is going to use extra battery life. Perhaps you could set it to push only during peak times, which would cut down on your use of the GPRS heartbeat.
I'm using both mail2web's Exchange Direct Push and also using VGSMail's IMAP push transport as well. On a typical day I never drop below 70% battery, but I'm not getting that many emails either. The VGSMail transport does have a nice feature where you can customize the heartbeat to the IMAP server between 1 and 20 minutes. I'm guessing that the Direct Push has a hard coded or registry configured heartbeat period. Either way I'm quite happy with the battery life.

None of my google calendars can be added in the calendar!

Hi,
I'm running Donut Unofficial v1.2.0 + Google Patch (unofficial) on an N21 / DSTL1.
I have a real problem that none of my Google calendars are showing up on the calendar program. When I go to 'my calendars' an click on add, there's nothing in the list for me to add to 'default' which appears to be the non-synced local calendar. I have 4 calendars that I need to sync. I tried making a new one to see if that made any difference - it didn't.
I've tried clearing the calendar data and rebooting as per several forum suggestions. I'm at a blank otherwise - is there some setting in gcal that I'm missing - it's like none of the calendars are being synced with the phone. The sync tick is ticked in the 'data sync' settings screen...
Help!
Thanks in advance
Tom.
Try going to menu-settings-data syncronization-Google and see if it still has your account log in. You may need to fill out the account information again.
Note that you can still be recieving your google e-mail etc and not have it registered to sync for your calander.
Hi,
I don't seem to have an option to re-sign in to the account...
See attached under the data synchronisation settings.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Tom.
How on earth do you have dual sim?
Untick auto sync, manually sync calenders then turn auto sync back on see if that works.
This phone has dual-sims neat huh.
That's what prompted me to move to Android - Sadly, your manual sync idea didn't work - see the pics:
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/tjrundy/AndroidPhoneCalendar
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again,
Tom.
Do you have any calendars on the account you are using? Double Check, by going to calendar.google.com.
You have default there which is a sign that your calenders should be/are syncing properly =/.
There is one weird thing though... have a look at my calenders:

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The "Default" Calender is labelled with my googlemail address and it has always been like that, on yours it's simply labelled "default" which seems pretty weird. Maybe someone else can come along and shed some light.
Does everything else sync ok? EG Contacts, Email etc.
Also, mind doing a mini review of your device? where you got it from and how much it was etc? I've always wanted a dual sim device but they all look pretty crappy tbh.
Yeah it's really wierd... everything else syncs and calendars are definitely there...
So you're right, this default calendar is syncing properly. I actually quite liked this device - it's got dual-radios which means that you can take / place calls from two sims - you can also select which sim will provide the internet connection; handy as I live between Germany and the UK, so I hoped to have a decent (cheap) internet connectivity in both places at last.
Sadly this lack of calendar sync is a dealbreaker
I was about to pack this phone back into its box, and flashed WM 6.5 onto the i780 that I'd been using till now, but then I found that the Google sync for windows mobile only syncs one calendar!
There's a review here: http://www.mobileburn.com/youtube_video2.jsp?Id=7753
It's a chinese phone so it's not the world's best quality, but does work (mostly), runs android and does have two phones!
Surely it can't be a problem with the device though.
Like I said, double check and see if you have more than one calendar? Poke around on the settings on the actual google calendar web app ie calender.google.com. You may have just somehow turned all your calenders private or something.
Same problem!
Any good new guys?
I've got the same problem on my dstl1.
All GCalendars aren't public but access from my account is permitted (obviously!). The only difference between my default calendar and others is that non-default's ones are shared with other people.
Thx in advance!
Have a nice WE

It's kind of funny that I believe Android can do this, but pocket outlook made by microsoft interfacing to a microsoft exchange server can only do one exchange account. Kind of silly.
Though i can kind of see why its done too, since there are device policies that can be pushed over the exchange connection, if 2 servers have conflicting policies, then which policies is the device supposed to follow?
Im guessing exchange support on android just ignores any policy settings, and its just strictly email.
Probably what MS needs to do is have it setup in such a way that the device follows policies from whatever exchange account is setup 1st. any subsequent account are email only, and the primary policy setting account has the option to disable setting up additional exchange email sources for security reasons.
actually android does lots of things better than windows...
Pick one to be fully sync'd and one to use pop3 for email only.

In this case only for individuals... But then Android is, (for want of a better way of putting it), a "toy" phone.

Yeah for enterprise id have to say winmo or blackberry is the way to go, with both you get security and policies
as you put it android and iphone are "toy phones" good for end users, both can interface with corp mail servers, but leave much to be desired in terms of security and policies
Why not exchange one and imap the other?

All depends on the configuration of the servers, which you may have no say in how they get configured. If you are in a 100% exchange/outlook environment, there is no need to have pop/imap services running on the server. Enabling those services and then opening those ports in the firewall present yet another security risk to have to watch after. So unless there is a real legitimate use the sys admin may not even want to bother enabling. Its just more things to worry about having open facing the wild internet.
Use OWA instead

[Q] Html mail in HTC Mail

Hello
I just noticed that I cannot see HTML mail in HTC MAIL app on any build (Desire or Desire HD)
I means that if I go to HTC MAIL settings, I see the option "mail format" in gray so not changeable, and I see there "Text only".
Some one had succeeded to have html mail?
It's definitively not a Exchange Server problem, because using any other mail software as K9, Moxier, Nitrodesk... I correctly receive and see HTML mails.
Go to settings and then choose 'Send & Receive'. Choose 'Mail size limit' and set the limit to 'No limit'. Emails will now be downloaded in HTML format.

I alredy tried this, no success. Email are still received as text only. And the option is still unchangeable.
I see. It worked for me. Although my build doesn't have a 'Mail Format' option at all - so there is no option greyed out. I'm currently using MCCM SE v3.4.

Hey rafpigna, you are not alone in this. I can never view my company's exchange mail in HTML except when using those few apps that you mentioned.
Some people said it's because my exchange sever is 2003, but my company has recently upgraded and I still don't get HTML display (format greyed out like you). If it is due to older exchange version, why is it that we can view using other apps. I am also able to view my exchange mail in HTML on my iPad using the default email app.
All the following Android Device/ROMs native email app does not display exchange in HTML for me:
1. HTC HD2
2. Samsung Galaxy S
3. Samsung Galaxy Tab
It is interesting that the email app is able to display HTML emails for my Yahoo and GMail accounts.
BTW, I have never gotten to display my Exchange emails in HTML under WM6.5.x or older either, and to imagine that WM and Exchange are both from MS!!
It real annoying and frustrating. As much as I dislike iOS, it is the only one that I am able to display my Exchange emails in HTML properly.
