Rockbox for Android - Android Software Development

Hey everyone!
I couldn't help but notice on the Rockbo homepage (rockbox.org), under unusable ports it has listed Google Android and in this thread: forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=14177.30 the last post says that someone had actually gotten sound to work through Rockbox on a HTC Legend phone:
Hello guys,
I'm right now listening music with my newest music app on my phone:
Rockbox plays music on my HTC legend \o/
The first song was Edward Maya vs Alicia - Stereo Love.
I'm overly happy that I've gotten that far now. I'm looking forward to
finally bring gapless playback, dynamic playlists and an extensive
equalizer (and more) to Android! Although there's a lot of work still to do.
Best regards.

This is rather exciting! I've used Rockbox before on an old iAudio X5 and it was a powerful alternate firmware. Anyways I just wanted to post this here just incase anyone else would be interested.

I found some more information digging around the interwebs. I found a blog from a Rockbox developer who talks about Rockbox as an application and he mentions this achievement and includes a link to the users git repositories for Rockbox on Android. You can read about it here: daniel.haxx.se/blog/2010/07/30/the-rockbox-app-part-ii/
Here's a quote from the blog:
While I’m told the current state is rough and there’s no installer or anything yet, I’m sure I share the view of lots of others that this is a great moment in the Rockbox history. A milestone. Thanks Thomas, I hope your work continues equally good and that we get an app to try out at the end of the summer or so.
Thomas’ git repo is here: h ttp://repo.or.cz/w/kugel-rb.git

Also Rockbox as an application was accepted into Google's Summer of Code program (info here: rockbox.org/wiki/SummerOfCode2010#Rockbox_as_an_Application )

Yeah!!!!!!!! I d like to see rockbox on android, I used it on an ipod mini, and it was really great with a great sound quality

There are no prebuilt apk's yet but you can download the source code and build Rockbox for android.
It works rather well, I'm using it in favor of the stock built in media player on my Legend.

Could you share the apk?

There's a link on the wiki page I created today:
xttp://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort (remember to change the xttp to http).

Just out of curiosity, could someone post a screenshot ?

Looks pretty promising and I know its not in any stage to be shown off but I couldn't even effectively navigate around. Hope they keep working on this.

That's probably because the default touchscreen mode is the so called grid mode. In this you navigate with d-pad like controls (the screen is divided into 9 rectangles, top middle is up, down middle is down, center middle is select, etc). You can change it to the absolute point mode in the settings.

This is the best thing to happen to my phone since I bought it!
The only problem is that's it's a bit jumpy from time-to-time, especially if 'multi-tasking.
But generally I'm impressed already. True gapless playback at last! A volume control that doesn't move in HUGE increments (I.E. I can make it really really quite if I'm falling asleep listening to music)
Great stuff!

I assume you have an HTC phone running the official 2.1 ROM?
Those have a bug which causes music to drop out sometimes if the app is in the background/minimized.

Not working for me on Motorola Milestone. This is how it looks like:

Define "Not working". The screen shot looks ok, except the font is too small (the default font should be bigger indeed).
Try loading the cabbiev2 or selecting a bigger font. And also remember what I said about the grid mode on the previous page.

The pre-built APKs are not working for me either. I'm trying this on a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) running stock rom. All it shows is the rockbox splash screen and doesn't go from there.

Hi there!!
Neither works on milestone (Personal Argentina's 2.1u1 official rom).
It loads, I can navigate (and configurate the screen) but it won't actually play any file...
BTW, the screen font size and graphics from the original skin has been an issue since I firts got it for my old (from a couple of weeks now) rokr e2...

Impressive!
Installed the 480x800 build on my Milestone (Canada Telus SHOLS_U2_03.11.0) and started experimenting.
Have a few questions:
1. Noted after editing config.cfg (in order to add a WPS file) that my paths were changed from /sdcard/rockbox/ to /data/data/org.rockbox/app_rockbox/.
Is it implicit that /data/data/org.rockbox/app_rockbox/ is the way to point to sdcard?
2. My WPS contains %pc (Current time in track) and %pt (Total track time); the latter is right but the former is always 0 (%px shows 0 too).
3. Maybe silly: I'm able to use the grid to navigate but did not figure out how to exit Rockbox. How to exit?

1) Yes. Rockbox removes the path and looks on the sdcard first so don't worry. In fact, any path will work. In order to remember it over restarts the files the setting point to need to be in /sdcard/rockbox though.
2) Don't know what's wrong there. I can't imagine it's an Android specific issue though.
3) There's also the absolute point mode, you just need to enable it (we didn't get around making it default yet). You don't *exit* Rockbox, you just stop/pause music (stopping will be slightly better for battery life) and leave the app (as with any other app like the built-in media player).

I have installed Rockbox on a HTC Tattoo. Not the most powerful phone out there, I know.
I am also very impressed. I had given up using my phone as a music player. I don't think that any of the apps on the Market are very good. None support gapless or EQ etc., and the format support is also very limited. But now there is hope.
I had to figure out how to use it first, and I found out how in the Rockbox forums. It seems like the UI is working very fine. The only thing is that they don't support the hardware buttons yet.
The music also plays back. But there is one (serious) problem: the playback stutters once in a while. It may be the same problem as reported above with HTC phones. So it is not quite usable yet. But they are definately on the way. These are early days, and the app isn't even downloadable from their web-pages yet, so I didn't excpect this much.

Update.
Fussing around with settings, noted (just once) that %pc (Current rack time) was working as it should; however, it subsequently displayed as 0 (as before) even though I modified nothing.
Another point: it seems that settings from tagnavi_custom.config aren't working.
On some occasions music did not play at all; display sometimes reverted to the very tiny initial default and it was not possible to select a font from the menu, among other menu navigation problems.
Despite those gripes, I noted no jumps while playing; in this respect, it's better than either andLess and AMPlayer, which I've been trying to play FLAC files.
Will stay attuned; am very glad that Rockbox as an app is being ported to Android and is already useable.

UPDATED!!! iPhone-like Music Player: Lumen. [alpha]

PLEASE READ THIS!!
Hi.. just to announce, that I'm making serious efforts to make the iPhone-like musicplaying capability on a Windows Mobile device, I show you now what I have been cooking for a while now..
This is only a proof of concept thing. It won't play any music now. It just shows the possibilities.
I was quite busy in the summer-time, so I had no or little time to develop, but it's going to change.
Anyway, a few things you should know:
- only 240*320 portrait mode (for now)
- .Net Compact Framework is required.
- it's filled with some random data.
- there is a syncing software on the desktop-side, which transfers a playlist from iTunes (not included in this release)
- without cleartype enabled, it's ugly.
- again, it won't play music now!
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU SOFTRESET YOUR DEVICE AFTER INSTALLING.
FAQ
-----------------------
Q: Will it have a coverflow-ish cool feature?
A: Yes, there will be.
Q: Will it support landscape mode only screens?
A: Well, landscape mode will be used for the coverflow-ish view. I'm still considerind this.
Q: Will it support smartphones?
A: I hope so.
Q: Will it sync automatically with my computer?
A: Of course it will!
Q: Yeah, but how?
A: You have to select an iTunes playlist then decide whether use the activeSync connection (more convienient but slower) or select a drive, and let the Bridge program on your computer do the rest (less convienient, faster)
Q: Wait, you have to have iTunes to use with this thing?
A: Currently, yes. iTunes offers a great API to work with, so it's very efficient to use. Also, in iTunes, most people has georgeous album art in tracks, and in Lumen, album artwork uses a lot of screen real estate, making it look insanely great. In the future, I'll consider fetching MP3 ID3 data, and so.

Things I'd like to see with this application (in comparsion with Audio Manager):
1. Integrate with HTC Home music tab - so that it can be controlled via that tab.
2. Possible to turn-off phone/screen while the music keeps on playing (to conserve battery)
3. Lists/plays tracks according to track numbers, not alphabetically (Audio Manager has this problem)
4. Library option - by albums, artisits, genre , etc.
5. .ogg support.
Possible?

1. I don't know "HTC Home music tab" and I don't know how to communicate with it, but I'll take a look.
2. It's already implemented in a previous unpublished version.
3. If you go to an artist, and select an album, it'll show it by track numbers if it's given. Any "view" that contains songs from a single album uses this mode.
4. I think it's already in.
5. Well.. i'm using Windows Media Player component, so it plays it if your device already supports it. (I'm looking for a better audio playing solution) So in theory, it can work.
stephano nice works...!
Hope nice programs in the future from u..!
Just tried it out. Nice and cool.
Looking forward to your release. Good job bro!
wow
the second iPhone Media player in two days? I'm really impressed.
Will test soon
EDIT: Great concept, but try to speed it up. Oh, and mine does not play any music. Please fix it
mindless ramblings aside, this looks neat. You made it on to my 'watch-for-further-developments' list.
What to say.... WOW!
Scrolling smoothness is really impressive I must say. Some other developers playing around with iPhone like applications should implement your scrolling routine as it is almost perfect.
I had many problems with selections at beginning, until I realized that, differently from other apps, I had to double-tap , so ppl please DOUBLE TAP'em :-D
You could join efforts with the other guy messing with an iPhone like mediaplayer (His already playing trough WMP features), but I think those 2 are developed in different ways.
Hope anyway to hear news from you soon
I'd love to see what this app looks like, but I Can't since I don't have a WM5 or 6 device. My player and this, are coded in two very different ways, so it would be hard to sort of combine the two, or use his scrolling routine, although from the sounds of it...I'd LOVE TO! I'll be keeping my eyes here though...
In truth I would like to see other developers using YOUR scrolling routine. I truly love it!
Have a nice evening.

WOW! Thanks!! Really!
Anyway, you don't have to double-tap.. It goes into things with one tap, but I'm working on to make the app realize it much faster. Since it has to mess with databases, then draw the list, it isn't as easy, as you may think.

Hey great app, this is the kinda thing i've been looking for, anyways once you get everything working properly, i have a suggestion for a cool feature, maybe once ur in the player u could have a coverflow type thing where u can flick thru album covers to select songs, srry if i'm asking for too much too soon but i can't contain myself when something this cool comes up.

[APP][03•30•09][0.6.5] TrackMyRun - GPS Run/Walk tracking (Nike+ sorta)

I have started working on an app for Windows Mobile 6 phones w/ GPS to do run/walk/bike tracking like the Nike+. Here is a little Video of the app in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIqKHCb21cg&feature=channel_page
Version 0.6.5 9s attached
- Smartphone detection is in
- Run Form updated to be smartphone happy, view log is next.
Version 0.6.4 is attached
- Calories burnt calc!!!! (put your weight in...lbs for now...kg coming )
Version 0.6.3 is attached
- 1 Mile/KM kills the app bug fixed!
Version 0.6.2 is attached
- I am not dead! I promise
- This is mostly a maintence update. All the tracking code has been pulled from the views and put off in modules (as it should have been from the get go) so I can get a Smartphone version working soon.
Version 0.6.1 is attached
- Audio updates - new sounds for mile/km passed and distance goal hit
- Audio updates - updates to how the power management is dealt with for audio, still not perfect, but better
- Center button (on your direction pad) now turns the display off and on and also it stops the phone from sleeping when you use that display off method. This is great for phones that get a bit wierd on their GPS in unattended mode.
Version 0.6 is attached
- New internal tracking code to improve performance and make new feature additions easier (this was more about me than you )
- First audible notices. Each mile/km and distance goal hit. It is just a tone right now, but I will record and add voiced stuff tonight.
- New Settings tab for audible notices
- Smartphone users can atleast start the app and track a run now! (still no settings or view log...that is coming)
Version 0.5.9 is attached
- Fix the View/Save log bug (I hope)...you might have to delete your Run Log (yeah for Alpha testing!)
- New way to calculate speed that is more accurate for me. This might depend on what GPS chip your phone uses...try both and see which you like more (change in the Settings Screen)
Version 0.5.8 is attached
- AppToDate bug fix
- Start of true metric support
- little bug fixes
Version 0.5.7 is attached
- I think the String->Date bug is fixed, please let me know!
- Added an "Action" menu under the left soft key for start/stop/save (silly non-touch screen phone users!)
Version 0.5.6 is attached
- EMAIL A RUN!
(that is a horrible name for the feature right now....since it just gives you a link to share...)
http://www.trackmyrun.mobi/viewrun.php?run_id=18&auth_code=5qii4mfy
Version 0.5.5 is attached
- Settings screen is up and working
- Goal progress is based on settings now (not just 3.1 all the time)
- All based on miles still, KM is coming soon fear not!
- Few more bug fixes and exception catches
Version 0.5.3 is attached
- GPS unattended mode updates
- Few bug fixes
- Ignore Calories/Pace, those spots are place holders/debugging right now...they will work in a later release
Version 0.5.1 is attached
- GPS stays up in unattended mode now (screen off by time out or hitting the power button)
- Few little bug fixes
Version 0.5 is attached
- KML support is all in now
- Go to view a lot (has to be a new one) and select View in Google Maps
- Change the line in the KML file to be green since that yellow was hard to see
Version 0.4 is attached.
- Fixed a few of the stupid SubString() bugs
- Added Experimental KML support! (start a run, do some stuff, then go to options->experimental->Build KML). It will put test.kml in your devices root folder
- Working on new speed tracking code, it is far more accurate...but not done yet (so ignore that it has like 900 #'s after the decimal point)
- Ignore what it says for calories burnt...that isn't what you think it is
ENJOY!
Version 0.3 is attached.
Looks good! I would definatly use this app!
Looks impressive. The auditory upgrade feature would be cool to add.
There are similar Apps. One in particular is also cool is:
GPS Cycle Computer v2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424423
How would this calculate calories burned if your activity differs?
i.e. Rollerblading vs. Running vs Cycling, etc.
or is it simply based on time and distance to give a general calculation?
Nice looking app, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this one. Keep up the good work.
Does this track coordinates? Or does it track via something else? Cause then I'm thinking that you need an active data connection for this to work :|

It tracks coordinates, so no data plan is needed at all for this. Just a working GPS. Now, I plan in the future to have online features for showing your routes on google maps and storing run data online, ect...but that is in the future...

There are some standard formulats that are based on weight, time of exercise and how vigorous the activity is. For walk, jog, run that is easy (since I now your MPH's). For biking, roller blading, ect that gets tougher.
This is looking awesome. Could really do with an App like this. Keep it up and hope your "about a week" estimate is correct for a first beta.
A question though; I have a Touch HD. Has the interface been written to be able to cope with a WVGA resolution?

I have only tested it on a VGA display (my Touch Diamond). I have played with it in the QVGA emulator and the Square VGA emulator. The layout is far from final (I am not happy with it at all right now), so that is in flux a lot.
Go ahead and try the current version if you like:

Please be aware this is a VERY alpha version. There are known bugs that throw exceptions that I don't catch...so be nice
If you do however have any failures or success, please let me know.

AppToDate Support
Could you possibly think about having this AppToDate Support. Since this is in the early stages of development, it would be great to run AppToDate to get the current version. Thanks.
Couldn't wait until I got home so just loaded it up here. Everything seems good until I tried to View Log when it crashes out on me.Unfortunately I don't have NETCFv35.Messages.EN.wm.cab installed installed so cannot view details.
Also +1 for Apptodate support!

Did you start and then stop a run? The log file isn't created until you do atleast one and I bet it is dying trying to read the log file (which doesn't exist yet for you if you didn't do a start/stop)
I will do some reading on AppToDate in a bit, see what all it takes to integrate it.

Yeah I had done and paced about abit; notched up 0.003 miles. Stopped the run successfully and then tried to view the log.
I've just jogged home from a friend's house (1.237 miles). This time when I stopped the run it crashed. No error code or anything; just said I had to quit and restart.
Sorry that's probably not much good for bug finding!

Yeah no problems there. Slight lag on speed changes but I guess that's to be expected/part of the suposed and much debated GPS lag on the HD!
No complaints about performance at all.
I'm really liking the look of the App, certianly looks good so far; will be awesome if/when audio feedback can be given.
Something that would be good is if you could make the data from the logs uploadable to a PC to plot onto a graph (via Excel).
Like I said, great work so far! Loving this, who needs Nike/Apple!

The lag might be that I only update the display every 5 seconds (that is for all data). I think I might update the speed in real time (there is a call back function I can attach to for that). I do have plans for graphing/tracking/mapping in the future via an upload to a website feature...but that is a bit down the road I want to get all the stand alone client features working correctly first!
Please let us know when you have completed a final version. this program will be very useful. I know its still in the early stages hopefully you will be able to find the bugs and get them fixed, so we can download complete version.

From Colour Stained glass to the monochromatic Bot

The Gripes of a WinMo switchover!
Just got my Dell Streak this Wednesday, unlocked from dell direct (at the temporarily reduced price!). From order to receipt was just 48hrs! Which was quite nice!
As you may infer from the title, this is my first Android device, previous to this (and still somewhat current) I used the HTC HD2 running WM6.5, (and probably would not have switched had the 5” streak been available on WinMo!).
These are my first impressions (in a 48hr period) on switching over (and I should add that my views on the device may be somewhat inter-twined with that of the O.S, and vice-versa!)
Somewhat underwhelmed, as someone else pointed out (don’t know why), but hopefully will get more excited as time passes.
Bigger Screen! If what you’re after is a screen bigger than the HD2 4.3” then this is for you, as it increase the visual real-estate of the HD2 whilst keeping the slip form-factor and with negligible weight increase! The HD2 looks positively tiny in comparison, the galaxy S? looks like 3”. Quality? Quite good, LCD wise, as I cannot speak for AMOLED. Problems? Control of brightness! adjustable on the home screen, but seemingly with an inaccessible life of its own within opened apps. (I know if you check the ones that have settings options they supposedly give the option to copy the system default, but i don’t believe they really do!).
Landscape Default, immediately corrected with ADW home Launcher! Haven’t been able to load any others, probably due to it being v1.6 Donut! I am missing the fully-fledged abilities of my SPB shell though!
Utilities; be prepared to look for your own for the majors (app killer/Task manager, File explorer). Widgets seem rather limited (or non-existant), possibly due to it being Donut 1.6. Touchdown?!
Apps: Whilst this may be an Android selling point, I personally (and currently) only see this as complacent ease-of-accessibility. There may be a lot, but the ones that really count aren’t there in numbers like on WM. I’ve only found limited singles for my major requirements, so be prepared for some slight frustrations
Ebooks: If you are a major ebook reader like me, be prepared to have to convert your whole library to just one format. On my HD2 my primary app was uBook; which read html, txt, rtf, pdb, prc, formatted everything on the fly into numbered pages and automatically remembered the last page/position you were on (even after complete exit and unit power-off!). My first two options on Android, aldiko and laputa, wouldn’t give me access to my library on the card. The third, iReader, could read txt & html files from my card, but had no numbered pages (only a top-to-bottom kinetic scroll option), so after laboriously scrolling down to where I was in the book, imagine my horror when I accidentally used the back tab, which took me back to the SD card library, on going back in, right at the Top again! Okay, my bad lets see what happens when I jump to device home; go back in, yes it’s still at the same place. But should it completely close or be app killed, or device shut off, guess what? Right Back At The Top Again!
Fourth time was the charm with FBreader, which could access my card to read my ePub converted library (Nobody please mention calibre! This system hog slowed down my PC, when batch converting only 100 text/doc file, for over an hour!), although it still has no numbered pages and is still a top-down kinetic scroller (I have to book-mark paragraphs). Fingers crossed for when its completely shut off.
Comics: only one real option so far; ACV! Comics look brilliant (re: sharp/vibrant/colourful)on the 5”screen, with well adapted settings options for landscape and portrait viewing controls.
Videos: Rockplayer for all your multi-format needs! Unfortunately it’s got that subtle playback issue (slight scratchy audio and video sync) that other people have reported for which you have no recourse to tweak the settings, as there are none! Unlike Winmo
Photos: No file/folder differentiating photo manager like Resco’s yet! (No separate icon option for camcorder recording either)
Youtube: accesses and plays fine, but seems to default to the lowest quality (will see if I can update or change the default)
Internet Browsing: the default browser is surprisingly quite pleasant (speedy and easy to use), although some sites default to mobile, and it has this annoying issue (probably Dell related) of not showing the additional product page options in the Android marketplace if you have the device in Portrait mode! (Weird, I know!). Readeable (in portrait!) on NO ZOOM!
Navigation: I am not missing my use of stand-alone nav systems, as, from the little I have used it, Google Nav seems quite brilliant!
Audio managers/Players: seems to be only one major rated one so far (audio manager pro) which I have yet to use, but I do miss my S2P/Coreplayer apps
Games: Now this seems to be where the 5” screen and Android /marketplace seem to have a kissing spot. I have only d/l’d Robo Defender so far, but it is brilliant (nope, not over-using the word!), and with similar games to utilise the screen ,and system, the future is golden.
Social Networking: don’t use, but i do think Android’s widgets, with spaciousness of the screen would go together.
So, overall (and thank you for bearing with me in my diatribe), in switching over to the Dell Streak on Android; for the 5” Screen, yes its worth it. (For the O.S. on its own without the screen, and on 1.6, not really for me). (Not a hardcore Winmo fan perse, but it is much more mature and fully fleshed than Android! Even now with all major players, including its creators, seemingly having bailed!)
If you want to read comics on a larger screen DEFINITELY!
Ebooks, yes (but with the above caveats).
Video? Need more players w/ settings to tweak!
Surfing, yes!
Games, Definitely!
So, the future is bright, the future is: the Dell Streak on Android!
Thanks for the perspective. I'll be switching from WinMo 6.1 and appreciate the viewpoint as this will be my first Android as well.
GPS looks to be the killer app for me. Everything else will just be a bonus for those times where a laptop won't do. Mostly email, games and music when I'm stuck at the airport. No separate PSP, MP3, PND.
Still, I wonder if I'll be able to have my GPS (AT&T) and Trapster running at the same time AND be able to make calls as I can on the WinMo? I didn't do this often (and once forgot to plug the charger in and drained a full battery in 30 minutes!) - but THAT is multi-tasking.
(I'm still waiting to get a rental car with a USB port to see if I can with stream my Media player to the car radio.)
There are many reasons to move off WinMo, but it does OK by me.
Winmo certainly does!
Thanks for your write up bbmalver and welcome to the Streak Family
Nice to be here; thanks for the welcome!
Aldiko will see ebooks in epub format on your card if you add them to the import folder. Personally I find it an excellent eBook reader, surpassing both ubook and Haalireader which I've used on WinMo previously...
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I did try to use the import option, but after 2secs it would say no books found. Are you suggesting all the books need to be copied to its own import folder before it sees them?
Tried it; didn't work! But on going thru the many created folders on my sd card I found that although i had created my own ebook folder on the card, Aldiko had created an import folder within my own ebook library folder, to which i then had to copy the book before it could import it. Convoluted eh?!
Thanks for the general pointage! Some neat touch features, can jump to page, and, best of all, it also remembers my page! ta!
Welcome to the android family
also, you can build your own YouTube app from source (i think) so you can change the default quality from there.
No one seems to have done it yet for the streak but it's apparently very easy to do
Now thats rather cryptic MeltusTell us how, or point us there!

2.2 Review

*** True Story ***
I am a member on Dell's community forum and have watched Dell's mouthpiece, Amy-B, post the lies and put up the smoke and mirrors regarding this for a while now. When she first announced that the update would begin on 11/15, I paid closer attention. By the end of the week when there was no update, I commented that users may have a potential class action suit. With that, I got a scathing email from Dell saying I violated their terms of use, some left handed subtle threats, and my post was deleted. I still laugh about that.
End True Story, my ongoing review below
I put 2.2 on last night and played with it for a little while before bed, then really started putting it to the test today. here's what's happened until now.
First, when I applied the update, it kept a lot of previous settings and applications rather than clean wiping. It also bypassed forcing me to login to google account, so when I tried to use the market, it couldn't. With that, I used my credentials to login to my google account and immediately started having some google calendar syncing error. It became a loop, each time asking me to report it, then asking me to force close the app, and then over and over the same thing. So I rebooted the streak, and it came up with the same exact issue not allowing me to do anything with it. I had to pull the battery to shut it down this time and when I get it all together to power up, I simply held the up/down volume keys and told it to do a factory reset.
The rom cooks itself into the streak as the factory install and 2.2 came up on the next boot, this time asking for google credentials. It worked that time, and I was ready to put the phone through it's motions.
Issues I've found
1. Voice Dialer via Bluetooth crashes each time I try to use it. It crashes to the point that it tells me to restart my phone. This is without fail.
2. swiping to unlock the phone, or pattern unlock are flaky. it will start then stop as if I've taken my finger off. I have to do it multiple times and crazy ways to make it work. Pattern lock same thing. Especially after coming out of my pocket... as if the heat from my body makes my finger not be recognized on the whole screen. This build makes the touchscreen no longer responsive as it was in 1.6... update, I've tested this over and over and over. yes, it seems to be the temperature, because if I blow on the screen to cool it, or something similar, the screen becomes instantly responsive to my touch. I never had this problem with 1.6 regardless of when I pulled it out of my pocket.
3. sometimes, changing screens gets choppy or laggy.
4. No widget bar or tray/drawer that allows you to turn BT or Wifi on or off. You have to get something from the market to do this (updated, this is available as a widget, I should open my eyes a bit)
5. Can't change the number of screens; can't add or subtract screens, stages, rooms, or whatever you choose to call it. You're stuck with 7, the center one being the default.
6. Multiple FC's for variety of reasons, many are while simply browsing the market. With that Microsoft-esque error reporting thing always popping up, I think they anticipated feeding garbage to the masses.
7. Have tried a few alternate launchers. Some are better than others, more functional etc.. .but no matter how weak an alternate launcher appears to be, they pretty much ALL beat StageUI
Likes
1. Have always liked the live wallpapers that we were introduced to in 2.1
2. landscape mode rights itself regardless of which side is facing up. could be a caveat since it puts the home/back/menu buttons upside down on the left instead of right with the hard buttons on the bottom, but still kind of cool nonetheless.
4. Support for Exchange is native and doesn't require additional software/applications.
the long and the short of it.. Dell is useless as an OS developer/tweaker and StageUI blows.
Samsung hit the homerun with it on its Galaxy S series. I was just at best buy, and the Galaxy Tab is pretty sweet but the price tag is ridiculous. Comparing 2.1 of my Vibrant with 2.2 on my streak, the Vibrant wins. no contest.
Day one of having the new 2.2 update on there and it's clear that this OS needs some patching already. I can only imagine what the people on O2 in the UK had to go through with their 2.1 fiasco
more to follow...
Here's a couple of things that I like in this build but before I list the items I wanted to address the comment you made about being able to turn of BT, wi-fi, GPS, brightness, etc. Under apps you can select Power Control and that will give you those options in a form of a widget. You do, however, will have to delete one of the Stage widgets to free up the room. Or you can just open the widget via apps. For my use, I currently prefer a different launcher than Stage. I am using the LauncherPro but there are a lot of other free choices like ADW, Zeam and so on.
Here are the things I like about this build:
1. Ability to hang up the call by pressing the power button ( you have to go to Settings-Accessibility-then check the mark for that option)
2. Radio feature - is absolutely great. The thing I don't like is the web ad that seems to pop every time I start listening to a station. If anyone knows how to turn/block that pop-up you would make me very happy )
3. Keyboard is awesome. Love the size, the options to switch to symbols, just love it. Haven't messed with SWYPE but I love the Andriod KB right now.
4. Flash - yes it works and it works well.
5. Speed - significantly faster. Whether navigating or downloading. Wi-fi speeds are faster than 1.6 or 2.1 I use to have.
6. Bluetooth volume is louder. This one was high on my priority list.
7. Music widget - looks nice and clean.
8. Camera works fine. I don't see an option for 720p though.
9. Security is beefed up by adding the option for PIN or password on top of the normal sliding lock. My slider works without any issues. But I prefer the pattern lock which also works great.
10. Haptic feedback can't be completely turned off, or you can turn off certain features alone like keyboard. I have mine off so the three main buttons don't vibrate any more. I don't think that option was available in the previous builds but I could be wrong.
These are the ones that I can think of right off the bat. I may add more as I remember them.

Long press home, then under widgets, then power control... thanks tons. that's what I was looking for.
So my quick review:
The good:
Loving the out-of-the-box Exchange support. Yay. Mobile e-mail/calendar/contacts without having to use Touchdown and the hassle of 'pushing' Touchdown contacts to the phone's contacts.
w00t. Ability to grab requiring apps from the market which require 2.x.
2.x features like portrait home screen, better multi-touch, etc.
The bad:
The Stage UI is just lame. Giving it a few days before I toss it in the bin.
I miss the old video playing app. I dunno what it was called, but there isn't even a shortcut for the new one. I installed ASTRO File Manager, browsed to my video directory and the file launched with some less-than-basic video player. What I liked about the old one was the order-by-date view which I have become used to but isn't the end of the world, the resume where you left off feature, and the delete from within the app feature. I guess Rock Player is the video player most people seem to be recommending, so I hope it has this.
For all its faults, I liked the old keyboard. I suspect it's still there, but I have yet to look. Using 2 (To/two/too) and 4 (For/four), etc in txt/IM/tweets now takes extra keypresses.
I never really knew how handy the Dell notification area was for 1.6. I'd turn off the cellular data and run Wi-Fi only, with just a couple of presses and it wouldn't interrupt the app I was in. Now I have to go to the home screen, press the menu button, and that's only to turn off wireless. I have yet to find the equivalent enable/disable for 3G.
Yet to check:
I've found the Streak's camera has taken pretty lame photos. I'm not photophile, but our 5 year old, 4MP camera takes better photos than the Streak. I've had the Streak set to the best quality (Lowest compression or whatever it was) and if you zoom in on a picture while viewing on a PC, it gets pixelated very quickly, while our 4MP pics are much nicer looking and they are twice the file size (4MP pic twice the file size of a 5MP pic?), so I'm interpreted this as 'The Streak takes crappy pics'. Been waiting to see what, if anything, the upgrade to 2.2 does for this.
So I guess it seems to lack polish, BUT, I think the reason for this is because it's actually near-to-bare Android, so I'm not going to criticise the roughness when the other option is more polish (Which one may or may not like) from Dell that means OS updates take 6+ months. I'm sure I'll be able to overcome anything I'm not liking with apps or through tweaking some options somewhere. Isn't this why we have Android?
But yeah. Stage is coming off pretty quick I suspect.
PS - You all might laugh: http://i.imgur.com/ULMLx.png
This build was far too laggy for my tastes. 1.6 was faster on some of the processes for me. I'm happily back on DJ Steve's build which is soooo much faster and has virtually the same features.

Something I'm surprised is:
2.2 doesn't have separate sounds for incoming:
E-mail
Texts
Reminders
...I dunno if iOS does, but my old Windows Mobile device did. I'd like a different sounds for these events, as I'll respond to them differently. Now I don't know if it's a calendar reminder which I can't ignore, a text which I might ignore or an e-mail that I can ignore...

Try "Quick Settings" which puts an icon in your status bar so when in an app, just drag down the status bar click on it and all your settings are there. Or, try "QuickDesk". Not sure if this is out of beta yet but its also an awesome app for doing exactly what you are talking about.....and much more.
Cant wait to get my Streak and to start rockin this 2.2. Would love to have vanilla 2.2 though.
as you are on 2.2 now , can you check something for me ?
- can flashled from camera be used as torchlight ?
- it should have usb tethering now, but does it also do wifi-tethering ?
- can the flashplayer play activescript ?
- is activesync (not exchange) working ?

Yes the led can work as a flashlight. I used the N1 Torch app and it worked fine.
Yes it does have wifi tethering.
I really miss the 1.6 menu bar/notification bar. Stage blows compared to the old ui. The swype keyboard is great. I have mixed feelings about the update mainly because of the ui changes.

1. Yes, I use StreakLight from Market (free)
2. Yes, there´s an option for this and I checked it, and it seems to work. But I haven´t connected a device yet.
3. How can I check this?
4. Dunno, cause I use Exchange and some Imap

Alright. Others have answered, but I'll pass on what I know. If you're talking Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) not talking to an Exchange server, a la Hotmail, I'm getting a "cannot connect to server" error... My EAS to work's Exchange is working flawlessly though.
And USB/Wi-fi tethering are working grand. I'm tethered by Wi-fi as I write this, so I can pass my 3G USB modem on to a colleague. w00t.
I am a little concerned about battery life. I haven't done that much with the phone today, unlike a normal day where I might squeeze in a few calls, texts, tweets, bit of web browsing, and three+ hours of video and have the battery at 20% at the end of the day. I'm at 20% left now, and I haven't done any of those things.
thnx
have you tried hotmail through POP3 ? it worked with k9 client.
what i meant is activesync on windows 7 64bit with office 2010 32bit.
yeah batterylife concerns me also. i have a habit of draining these in godspeed (A)
You can create a shortcut to the wifi & networks popup from launcherpro activities.
1. Long press on the desktop bsckground
2. Select shortcut
3. Select Activities
4. Select wireless & networks
You now have access to the old dell popup to disable data, 3g etc.

3.1 Acer Official Update Changelog:

First I want to thank thor2002ro for ClockworkMod Recovery and making flashing and updating fast, easy and safe, also vache for providing 3.1 update, sc2k for an easy and quick way to root any version of the A500, last but not least Interphaze Solutions (whoever he is) for the Acer Recovery Installer.
I just updated (from stock 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 to 4.010.22_COM_GEN1) IT works, no wifi issues, GPS now takes a lot to get location, and seeing a lot of performance improvements and fixes, was late and delayed 5 times but here it is and we are enjoying it.
Thus I wonder why no one even bothers to make a change log or something... like all the changes and improvements:
Acer_ A500_4.010.22_COM_GEN1 Applies to all Android 3.1 Acer Official Updates, OTA or Leaked (installed yourself).
New Apps
Kobo
eBook store and eBook reader
Movie Studio
Video editor
Updated Apps
Youtube
Moved fullscreen button, HD button, play button, slower double tap needed to go fullscreen/back higher performance, Cache fixed and higher cache, doesn't stutters/chops/drop frames at start or when OSD shows up (volume, controls, etc).
Flash 10.3
Music
Better looking, UI improvements, it finally updates, Google Music Beta
MusicA
Better looking, UI improvements, lots, better "listening" (now it can identify Japanese music played through my phone, SWEET).
NFS Shift
Icon changed, now is more visible and have HD on it, who knows what else is changed
Improvements/Fixes
UI is faster, more responsive, doesn't stutters like before.
Wifi Icon in notification bar now shows net activity.
Support for ACC+ streaming (or whatever uses winamp in shoutcast radio streams).
720p videos play smoothly, some 1080p videos too (simple profile ones I think, needs confirmation).
New Video Codecs Support, now MKV videos plays with Mobo Player (didn't worked before).
Video intro for games pre installed now always plays (before they crashed, but didn't force close the game)
Auto-brightness works now, it just changed its behavior, its not longer "instant", takes a while.
Recurring Issues
Randomly waking up/screen turns on
Mic still SUCKS (srly did Acer even test it by recoding someones voice and playing it back just to hear how well/awful sounds?)
New Issues
GPS wasn't broken, now it is (can see 7 sats but only onle lock after 2min and really poor signal)... maybe has something to do with GEN3 now updated to GEN1 thus missing something, can someone confirm.
Youtube widget is micro and deformed, there is a fix here in XDA.
New bloatware, or at least more packet, includes 2 songs and 2 videos (maybe 720p haven't checked) to show off in retails maybe.
You can help to make this a lot more complete, please contribute, post your discoveries, findings or changes you noticed.
And finally excuse my crappy english, as you can easily tell its not my native language, any correction and recommendations are very welcome.
Reserved for more space (I got this recomendation from a friend thank you).
Plus bump
Google+
"Huddle" is installed when installing Google+, which does *not* cone pre-installed on 3.1 - sounds like you already had it there. Installing Google+ creates two shortcuts - Google+ and Huddle
Speaking of, if anyone wants a Google+ invite, dm me - I got a few to burn
Huddle is part of the Google+ mobile app. It's for group chats.
* damn, someone beat me to posting this by a few minutes... serves me right for not refreshing
I also updated the "Vache" way from stock 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 to 4.010.22_COM_GEN1.
One problem - now seems to be fixed - I had on 1.141.01 was the following :
Could only connect to our company (outsourced) Exchange-Server 2007 via IMAP whereby whenever I would forward a message, the forwarded-message would "loose" the original content when send. .
I did try and (bought) Touchdown TAB, which is great, but for some reason does not allow me to retrieve/sync older messages.
Marcher
speaking of the autobrightness
Seems to only work if I set brightness to a level in the middle and reboot. Once I touch the slider again no auto bright until reboot. Any fix for this anyone is aware of?

After a while I noticed that auto brightness WORKS!!!, but its no longer "instanly", it takes awhile, give it a minute.
To test it try to put half brightness then turn on auto brightness, after a while turn off auto brightness and BOOM goes the light, so it works just changed its behavior bad auto brightness, bad
Thank you all for your contributions, updating ASAP!
I think two things mentioned in the OP *could* be hardware issues. I'm on my third A500 after returning the second one because the microphone would barely pick up my voice. This new one records my voice rather well, but voice to text is still a bit spotty (I blame the google servers for that). Another thing I have noticed is that the auto brightness on this unit actually works quite well whereas on the older unit it barely worked, if at all. I can change the brightness all the way up or down, turn the auto on and within a second or two it sets it to something more appropriate. If I cover the sensor the display dims, if I hold it towards the window it brightens. It works like an auto brightness should work. I still have 3.01 on the new unit and am waiting for the OTA update to come, whenever that is...
The second unit was manufactured in may, this unit is manufactured in april. I suggest if you have concerns about auto brightness and microphone, see if you can test another one at the store.
One question for those having issues with the microphone and auto brightness? Did you apply a screen protector? If so, was it a wet application type?

My new A500 has an auto brightness that seems to work perfectly. I tried what you said and it still works ok. The unit I returned a few days ago had a bad microphone and the auto brightness didn't seem to work well - or at all.

I'm quoting myself from another thread:
Well, I installed CWM, acer recovery, rooted and went from 3.0 (from stock 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 - 4.010.22_COM_GEN1) to 3.1 (.22), then unrooted to go for .30, rooted, got .38, updated (didn't need to unroot, didn't need to root again).
The history of my life

And I think the issues (reboot frozen) was due acer recovery or CWM... software highly experimental is prone to fail time to time... And nothing that a factory reset plus unnistalling recovery and cwm doesn't fix. I think but don't bet on it.

Video editor
...
You can help to make this a lot more complete, please contribute, post your discoveries, findings or changes you noticed.
And finally excuse my crappy english, as you can easily tell its not my native language, any correction and recommendations are very welcome.

I got the Android 3.1 OTA update last night. I'm in Australia and my new build is Acer_A500.4.010.40_COM_GEN1
Wonder what the difference is?
As well as getting Kobo (which I don't want as I already have Kindle) I also got Zinio in the update, which "allows" me to buy magazine subscriptions which I can't get on my Kindle because Amazon won't sell them to me in Oz.
So far (less than 24 hours) everything seems to be okay except that Kaiten mail seems to be stuck somewhere. Dunno if its related.
