Gmail Contacts - OMG Finally!!! - Nexus One General

In case you haven't heard, Contacts was updated:
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/updates-to-contacts-and-slightly-new.html
Best feature I've been DYING to have for months: custom labels!!! My god, I always found it absolutely maddening to look at a contact in Gmail with four different numbers and not know which is which for lack of labeling tools. Finally, I can name phone numbers as "Google Voice" or "Skype" rather than have a whole mess of "mobile" "work" "mobile" "work" numbers and not know which one is which.
Funny bug, notice that if you select "Google Voice" as the drop down in Gmail, it actually comes out "grandcentral" in Android Someone forgot to update the name since that company is long since gone...
(And for some reason the fields selected from the default dropdowns in Gmail come out lowercase on Android like "mobile" rather than "Mobile".)

Not in Gmail

That's great to hear! I guess I will see them soon once it works its way into GApps users. I have a gmail account for android market and google reader...but I draw the line at my contacts!

Cool.. This is probably off topic a bit, but I have my outgoing calls automatically private (AT&T does it for me), so I manually put in *82 for some numbers..
Android tends to hide it, so I never know if I'm really sending my number (prefixing *82) or not. Actually I need to try something else, most other phones if I put in *82 AAA NNN-NNNN and that person calls me, it doesn't match the numbers so I have to put one with *82 and one without so CID shows that contact...
Okay this has nothing to do with the original topic... So...
Cool, I'll be glad to have some custom ones, as some folks have "Work cell" vs "Personal cell" or such. Thanks for mentioning it, I'll be tweaking at least a few folks in there.

they need to add the other fields that show up in the phone to the google contacts webapp (ie notes, birthday, etc)... birthday in particular needs to be better integrated to contacts and calendar in general so i can ween myself off facebook.
also would be nice to be able to list all my non organized contacts.. currently i can only list my organized contacts or "all contacts"

is this for the android contacts app or just the gmail web interface?

Just the Gmail Contacts interface, which if you don't see yet, will be rolled out to everybody over the next few days. But all the new data gets formatted and sync'd to phone (as opposed to having to edit hundreds of contacts via phone...)

Hey look, and we still can't add birthdays on from the phone. Good work Google. Keep it up.

The phone didn't magically change.... Therefore, no new features were added on the phone.

Contacts in "Messaging"

Has anyone found another way around this? When you go to Messaging > New message...do you really have to put in a phone number or can you type a name instead?
Because If i type in a name, it just types in the numerical equivalent of the letters. for example: Ryan Smith comes out to "7926 76484"
Does Google actually think that people will memorize the phone numbers of the contacts they want to text message?
So the way around it for now is to go to Contacts and click on "Send Txt Message" but I've been spoiled with the Dash where I can just search for the contacts in the messaging client itself.
when I go to messaging>new message and I type in a name, it has a list to select from. The first is the numerical equivalent, but under that are all the matching names in my phone book. Is yours not like this?

Me too....
it's weird cuz i do. since there is no program that takes screenshots of the g1 yet, i took a picture:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
i tried typing in Cheryl Addeco (don't worry, it's not a real name haha) and it never displayed the phone number I inputed 14089994433. Instead, it just did the "numerical equivalent" of 243795 233326
weird... it should show below it did on mine... I will get screen shots tomorrow of what I do.
i get a list of my contacts as well not sure why this is happenning to some and not others.
yeah i,ve had that problem with i first got the phone.
I didn't use Gmail for contacts much.
I exported my contacts from outlook using CSV
and then imported them into gmail when i got my G1.
I was having the same exact problem as the OP.
I've noticed a pattern with it though.
It only happened with some contacts.
Other contacts it would show up when i started typing their name.
I tried to find something in common with the ones that showed up.
I realized that when i had a POS nokia 6131, when i added contacts it saved their number as "Other"
When i added contacts with my iphone, i had a chance to select it as "Mobile".
The contacts that show, have (Mobile) next to the names.
So i went into my Gmail, and edited all the numbers to be Mobile as opposed to Other.
After i finished that everything was fine!
All of them are Mobile...if they're supposed to be in Mobile. Interestingly enough, I tried playing around with changing them from Mobile to Home and when I click on save, it doesn't save the changes and leaves it to whatever it was.
The ONLY number that shows up is the one I added. I noticed though when I looked in GMail contacts that for the person that shows up, it says "mobile" and the rest of my contacts say "Mobile"

SMS program that will show full thread?

The built in messaging in WM only shows so many messages per page. You have to keep clicking on the "older" link to keep moving through the messages. So I'm wondering if there are any SMS managers, etc. that will show the entire thread on one page. Also, show the time along with the date?
I too would like to know this answer for our kaisers and tilt 2's. However, i am suspecting it would slow things down a bit, but am willing to see what the difference is. Also the date and time would be nice
mine shows the date and time i recieved my text. not the entire thread though. i always delete my messages anyways. though it would be cool to see the whole thing on one page.

thats what i m looking for as well, the SMS client and build in dialer are the only cons for me with this phone
Mine shows the time on some, and the date on others, but never both on all messages. Makes no sense to me
not sure if this is what you were trying to see but if you go in to the contact individually it shows your entire conversation =)

Try resco contact manager. It incorporates nicely but I don't think it will be what you completely want because the rhodium is a nice device with great graphics. For wm 6.1 it was a great addition, but check it out.
Hope this helps.
Yeah, the date and time show up if it is the SMS was received in the current day. The problem is if you backup your phone and then restore it, like through myphone.microsoft.com, it loses track of the order.
The HTC version does show the whole thread at once, with dates and times but you can't export the thread like you can in the WM threading, which I do by just doing a select all, copy, paste to word, save.
I guess what I'm really trying to get at, is the ability to archive conversations as it appears in threading mode.

[Q] Editing the "Me" contact card...

Whenever I look at a text message conversation it puts "Me" as blank picture: (see first picture).
But whenever I try to edit "Me" from the "People" application, the device just hangs and won't let me edit anything. Does this happen to anyone else or does anyone know where to fix it? Thanks!

From what I remember reading a while back, you will need to make sure that your sim card has your number set in to it... From what I remember reading, you can do this using an iphone or a blackberry... The cyanogenmod rom used to do this from what I recall... But can't say 100%...
Unless someone can correct me, as I only used android for a few weeks
I'd like to piggyback off this question and ask if theres a way to make one of our contacts "Me" or just overwrite it.

On Windows Mobile there was an option to copy any contact into the "Me" contact but I can't find that option, should there be one on Android!
The "Me" thing is an HTC thing, not an ANDROID thing. In Vanilla Android there is nothing like this in the People area, you just have a contact card of yourself. I can edit my "Me" information fine. If you go on Google.com and edit your contacts with your name, it seems to change it as you login to facebook and stuff and it auto associates you with yourself, ie my Facebook is Josh ______, my twitter is GlitchZero, it auto links these things to "Me" or "Josh ______" in my Google contacts.
Ah thank you for that information. I did a hard reset & made sure "Me" was not associated with any Facebook or Google account & it works perfectly, thanks!

[Q] No more groups in Android L contacts app?

Hey guys,
am i just to blind to see the option of showing groups in my contacts or is it gone with Android 5.0?
Hi there,
I supposed you are using the stock contact apps.
Try this one:
1. Open your Contact and press the option.

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. Go to filter. Scroll down to "Display Contacts".
There you can filter your contact list of all your signed account,
such as google, messenger, facebook, etc,..
Just check the box of the group that you want to appear in your contact list...
I hope this could help you...

That's definitely not the stock Contacts app on a Nexus.
That looks like an LG on Gingerbread or something.
yep, using stock android 5.0 app. not that one shown above...
No, it's not. It's Xperia ICS. Sorry for not giving the exact nor straight answer. But I meant to say is, we all know that Android has its common setting. And its possibly the solution is in the contact, settings and filter...
I got contact groups back in stock contact app in the contact modification activity (after the google play service update I think)
The thing is that is not possible anymore to browse contacts by groups.
As you say you can modify a contact group in the edit label but you can not browse contacts by groups thats very annoying unless for me that I have an agenda of over 400 contacts (work and so on).
Does anybody find how to?
Not a very simple solution but you can select which group to show/hide in the account selection menu (only in all contact tab)

Galaxy S10+ - Google assistant calling someone not in my contacts

Good evening!
I will forward this issue in hope that a solution will be found.
For several hours I have been confronted with the following situation described in the following chronological order:
1) In Google Assistant, I saved and set up the following command "Call my girlfriend"* - following the action of the assistant to be "Calling D??" - until today things went normal
2) Today I asked Google Assistant the same thing* "Call my girlfriend," and the action of it was* "Calling Conpet D, Whatsapp" followed by dialing "0723272822". - Here's the problem!
3) This contact called "Conpet D" does not exist in my contact list, the phone number assigned to it "0723272822" is not found in the phone.
I specify that I've searched for both the phone number and the contact's name in the sync agenda of my Google account,* also in my phone's memory, e-mails, facebook, whatsapp. No result!! It doesn't exist!
4) In Contacts, when I'm trying to save this "Contact D", the agenda suggests that there are duplicate contacts, but the list is empty.
How do I delete this Conpet D? Or how do I reset all memory of my Google Assistant and start all over again?
P.s Screen shots added down were made now, after I tried to "remove D??" as my girlfriend. As you see, Google don't recognise a name for my girlfriend, than found a contact in my agenda when i ask for the phone number, and finally calling that Conpet D.

Happy April fool's day! And welcome to XDA...
@galaxys
Hello!
Nice to meet you! I'm new here, actually my problem got me in this community, but I'm glad and hope that I will find a solution for my problem.
Are you sure you weren't outed by Google in front of your girl, and you posted this "mystery" here to escape her wrath? ?
@latino147 Actually dealing with my girlfriend wouldn't be so bad.
I can't say that i use so much google assistant function, but it makes me crazy when I find something that doesn't work and can not find a solution. I also called Samsung for this problem but I have to go to a Samsung service. Until than, I'm trying to fix it by myself...
This guy is on xda... you really believe he has a girlfriend? Google knows everything......
Ontopic: I dont have my s10+ so i cant check ( send it in for camera issues)
But old phones had the option of saving contacts on sim or phone or google account. Maybe there is a conpet d on the sim?
@Valinorian
I have checked them yet. Internal storage, accesed google contacts on PC, and SIM also. I went at an Official Samsung Service today. They told me they could keep the phone for some tests, but honestly this function isn't so important for me to leave my phone for a few days.
I actually realised that Voice Commands are different to Writing Commands. Voice commands have more bugs.
