If you are using an app like root explorer or even es file explorer with root options enabled you have to make sure your system is mounted R/W before you can make changes.

So I have come across several post that say I need to access my root folder under Android. Problem is under SD/ANDROID/ all I have is AndroidApps, Cache, data, Media..thats it. NO ROOT.
Im Running Mat6b on a US HD2 Tmo
The root folder is the folder isn't named root. As the name suggests it is the root for all other folders. The folder structure is comparable to a tree. The root folder contains some folders(branches) which have their own branches. So in a file explorer you just have to tap 'up' as often as possible and then you are in the root folder.

I appricate your reply. This is what im trying to do
--please go to build.prop file you will find it android/root/system
so I take it as a folder named root in the Android folder with a folder names system in it...am I wrong?
Google for Root Explorer apk and download and install it. Now you can see the root of your device

Hello folks,
I've got an .apk file on my sd card. To install that app, i need to unmount my SD-Card. Therefor i cannot install my app - which is located on the sd card - anymore. I want to do it without the market. I already tried to move the file with the astro-manager to the mnt folder (which you can still see even you unmounted your sd card). But i couldn't copy the file with astro to this folder.
Any suggestions?
Try AppInstallerV2
You may need to move files .apk to a PC via Wi-Fi.
I do this.
Move. Apk file to pc.
Run ES File Explorer on MINI connection WiFi to PC part to .apk.
Click to .apk.
ES File Explorer to install the files. Apk by way of it to Phone.
Or do it using the adb install command.
Have a look here for ADB Infos.
Upload apk to DropBox, copy link, paste in Browser and install
*ouch* Why didnt i have this idea?
Thanks codiak that worked
i used this command ( just for other users which have the same problem as me )
adb install path/on/windows/myfile.apk
What is ES file explorer.& where can I get it?

I think it is not pre-installerd, only Astro file manager.
I recently installed Cm7.1 on my Nook Color, does this give me root access? The reason i ask this is because i was attempting to access my build.prop to try to get some games to work but i can not seem to be able to access it via Astro File Manager. Also on a side note, every time i install an app and do not have my sd card in my Nook i am prompted to do so instead of using my internal memory?

CM7 is a rooted ROM. The file access model is setup to make sure you know what you're doing to prevent you from modifying or deleting a file that is essential to the system even though the ROM itself is rooted. I don't use Astro so I don't know how to get root access for that app. File managers like File Expert (free) or Root Explorer (cheap) will allow you to access the root and system files, but you may have to enable the capability in a setup option. In addition, you will have to set the directory to read/write from read-only to actually modify a file.
Thanks for the info, thought i did something wrong when i was installing cm7

If you use ES File Explorer (recommended) then it has a setting to make the system directory read / write. You can then just long touch the file, open it using the built in text editor and save it.
Yup i did that, checked both boxes under root settings but i am unable to navigate out of the sd card
es file explorer
To get out of SD card, go into settings and change home to / instead of /mnt/sdcard next time you open it will start in base directory
Ok, I am rooted on a stock rom. I cannot get access to edit anything in the system/app folders. Of course, cannot get Adaway to work properly because of this. Other root apps work just fine. Ideas/
Thanks

What file manager are you using? I am having trouble with se file explorer to complete root actions, however total commander works fine if you mount the system folder as RW
Hmm root works just fine for me with ad away. i even used es file explorer to get to system part and add stuff to the ringtones directory so i dont have to have them show up in my media players. I am using the 2.52 beta root.
