I see this morning that I897UCJH2 (2.1) is available for the Samsung Captivate on samsung-firmware.webs.com. Anyone tried it yet? I am downloading it now...
I am currently running JM5 with RyanZA's lagfix so I'm hesitant to try a new rom.

it didnt run 5 times either, lol, I think the modem is updated too.
does it still require the speed fixes?
It's scoring a 909 in quadrant fully stock... which is certainly an improvement over the old ROM but still not blowing the doors off. So far it feels pretty reponsive, but the laggy crap normally crops up over-time and not instantly.
Anyone have a change log for this? I can't find it anywhere online.
I don't want to get anyone too excited, but I got a GPS lock within 10 seconds outdoors (Not inside since I work in a concrete box). Who knows if it can KEEP a lock though.

I never had a problem getting a lock under 30 seconds. The problem was keeping that lock and accuracy.
Ah, they got rid of usb tethering in the usb settings
file system still lags in quadrant tests (905 score)
So is Odin required for this, or can ROMmgr/CWM be used?

How is the 3g on this baby? Original firmware is okay but needs improvement. I wonder if the modem file has been upgraded. We will see and find out soon.

NEW FIX OUT!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
Like many of you folks, i've been having lots problems with the GPS. And like many of you, I also am upgrading from the G1 so I know how a good GPS signal is suppose to be like. In many instances, the GS would not sync with the GPS when under the same circumstances, the G1 had no problem.
Inside my home it will rarely connect. When testing with the GPS TEST, the damn thing would not even connect to a satellite.
AFTER FIX - Everything connects REALLY REALLY FAST and ACCURATE
PS - These are not my own but I found them online by username e-wrecked
STEPS
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"
7 - Praise God
----------------------------------------------------------------
PS - If you need to get back to default here are the specs
DEFAULT - OPERATION MODE - Standalone
Server - www.spirent-lcs.com
Port - 7275

edit: Sweet, Got a lock in like 1 min. outside around a bunch of buildings on a really cloudy day.... Not sure if this fixes it completely but It works great for me so far. Ill do more testing obviously but nice job op...
Xda rocks. People all help.. Loving it
edit2: Ok I shut gps and my location off. Then turned on my location. Went to google maps typed in tmobile, then went navigate too, it opened up my gps panel, I turned gps on, hit back to go back to the navigation, it now locks in about 5 seconds on a major cloudy day around buildings got a lock, last night I couldnt get one in minuetes.. Very awesome... Great job again op
I was starting to have buyer's remorse because I use my phone for navigation daily. About 30 min ago my internal dialouge was: "Sh!t, I sold my iphone for this and the gps barely works!"
I decided to check if xda-dev had a fix posted and hot damn there it was my gps works awesome! Albeit I was very sceptical and I bit a couple of nails since the first fix was slow (maybe cold with new settings), but every subsequent fix has been lightning quick!
Thank-you very much for posting the fix!
By the way the Vibrant is miles ahead better than the iphone. If this problem occurred on the iphone I would have waited 3 weeks before Apple would stop denying there was a problem and then tell me to buy and external gps for it to work properly - just poking fun at apple.

+1 How true.
This fix is exactly what was needed. Thanks to the OP.
Since applying the fix, my phone is taking noticeably longer to boot to a useable state. Previously, the phone would boot into the OS and be snappy within seconds. Now, it's taking me ~1min for it to scan the SD card, and is extremely 'choppy' (low FPS) until this is complete. If I happen to accidentally bring up the keyboard during that 'choppy' period, it will remain on the screen until I do a hard reboot.
Anybody else experiencing something weird like that?
Good so far i even got locked on in the house in a room with no windows in like 5 seconds. First boot up after entering fix was real slow and had some quirks but now running normal. anybody else?
Thanks OP

no, nothing noticably different for me. Seems to boot normal. Even so Id rather wait one more minute on boot than not have gps.... I know your not complaining and it is valid im just saying. Even if this did have that effect im ok with it.
I can confirm.. that the GPS issue is not fixed only with the GPS Files from the leaked Rom. At least on my device..
I have tried both ROMS (Bionix and Twiz) and I'm never able to get a GPS fix unless I wait like 2 minutes for the first time and then I have to Open GPS Status (market app) to kind of wake up the GPS and then get a fix. I have tried several times and is always the same result... on the other hand... once I install the JI2 leaked ROM... I can get a GPS Fix in less than 20 Seconds in the first try, ALWAYS,, after that I can go to Maps and get a fix in less than 3 seconds every time. So, I'm sure that there is something else in the ROM that is fixing the GPS...
I installed the gps fix only and it was working pretty good for me where I live in Florida. However, tuesday I flew out to Ohio on business and it was pretty hit and miss there. Currently I'm in North Carolina and I can't get a flicker of a signal on the gps. Kind of disappointing after thinking it was fixed.

I honestly think the exact same thing. I applied the gps fix from the leaked j12 update and it always takes 2 min to get a lock. After I reboot my phone, I always have to wait another 2 min.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant
I get a fix in under 5 seconds - with WiFi off. The JI2 update fixes the compass which can and will mess up Navigation like Google Nav.
To play that broken record
Sats with SNR's below 17 will 1) Not Lock & 2) will show at 0 SNR with GPSTest regardless of what the reading is below 17. This means no GPS for you under poor GPS conditions. Other phones will lock with SNR's below 17 but the fix is less accurate.
Will not lock or it will take a LONG time to lock over WiFi. Disable WiFi for best performance... (odd bug here).
My GPS would just freeze up my phone, after applying the patch not only does the GPS work but i am usually connecting to 7-8 Sats out of 10.
BTW, I asked people in the Captivate forum to list their GPS settings after a successful update:

There's a new address for the SUPL server:
- h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp
Tried it and I can pick up satellites a bit quicker (subjective impression), but it doesn't really work for me.
Anyone else want to give it a shot?

On the leaked Vibrant ROM, one tester I worked with had very bad performance when changing the server values (not to the address above, which I think comes from the new Captivate firmware, but to the old values floated on the forums weeks ago). After experimenting, he seemed to get the best results simply enabling MS Based mode and leaving those server details stock.
I have come to believe there is not much sense in amateurs playing with the SUPL settings. The operators of the SUPL servers seem to have a relationship with specific carriers, and I think there is some handshaking that goes on. I would advise leaving well enough alone.
Hey guys, Ive been having lots of issues with the gps actually locking on my phone, i know some of you have mixed results, but i was playing around with some settings and finally got a lock inside with 8 sats!
Below are the settings needed.
Getting into LBStest mode:
Then select SUPL/CP settings:
Server FQDN Type
Auto Config
Server: (This is the important one)
h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp
Server port
7275
SUPL Secure Socket
Off
AGPS Mode
SUPL
I tried the same settings manually on my wifes phone with cognition 2.0 and it didnt work and the server port was a different number. I tried copying my settings over but it didnt work.
It looks like you need DG's cog v2.1
This worked great for me, hopefully it may help you guys out!
EDIT: picture is sitting on my couch 5 feet from a window!

I tried those same settings and saw 8-10 satellites too standing still.
Now set your navigation and take it for a test drive. It's still useless. (for me anyway).

I suggest you look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8264844&postcount=1
SUPL servers provide ephemeris/almanac data which is usually good for 7 days. Changing wouldn't do much. It's usually a one shot thing. By default, the hardware GPS needs to get this information from the satellites themselves which good GPS units do in 45 seconds (SIRFIII) but I've seen bad ones take up to 30 minutes.

Same here.
It seems we need to start a thread where everyone posts their Lbstestmode settings and results to try and narrow down ONCE and FOR ALL which settings are the best.
More specifically, which settings are the best NOT ONLY for getting a GPS lock standing still in your home/apartment/office/wherever but most importantly while using Google Nav WHILE DRIVING!
In my opinion, getting a lock and going nuts over how many satellites your phone sees while standing still is pretty useless. I use my GPS primarily for navigation driving around town.
I've tried three completely different lbstestmode settings posted by different people in this forum, as well as the default Cognition 2.1 settings. All of them lock while driving, then lose the lock shortly after.
The issue is, at least for me and others as I have been reading, is that after the OTA update you can't get anymore into the Lbstestmode config with the dialstring.... Is there any other way to open/config that? I know this is not really Cognition related, since I guess with it you are still able to get in... probably will try it....

You can if you use LauncherPro. There's a walkthrough on here about it...but you basically create a homescreen shortcut to an activity and select LBSTestMode.
When you guys flashed the jh7 update, did you tibu your system settings and apps, or apps only? I did apps only and it fixed my GPS. I drove around, and even didn't follow the route, and it still found me consistently.
If you do some interweb reading you will see that most of the other phone manufacturers have an agps server. For the Deathstar it is: h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp. In an almost universal rejection most are switched to a nokia server or to google's servers claiming faster locks and improved location awareness.
Meh - I've tried them all - can get GPS to work for a short period of time, then the device seems to die. I really think this is a hardware issue.

I think it is Hardware too. Only because I really have never seen any issues with my GPS running many different roms. I am a Field Technician so I am always driving around. I have been using my GPS when I go from site to site to see if I can find any real issues. It has stuttered from time to time, but not real big issues. Seems to skip for a second or two and then gets rigth back on track. Now each site isn't that far from each other about 10 to 20 miles so it may be that I haven't had a long enough trip to have any issues. I did go on one 100 mile trip the other day and it never quit on my. I am going on a 300 mile trip Sunday so will test it out the whole way and see what happens.

Thanks! That did the trick.... I see now that it still has the same values I had put in before AT&T's OTA update.... so I guess that wasn't touched by the update... makes me wonder... today I had way better reception and was actually able to drive from work to home without the signal dropping not even once... Only thing I did last evening was clear out all GPS data... so, now still on OTA JH7 and wondering if I should or not change that...

Here's the best fix:
1.) Install Nero 4.1
2.) Leave it alone.
The end.
If that doesnt work:
1.) Install Nero 4.1
2.) Do the hardware fix
3.) Leave it alone.
The end.
my solution: get a new phone once a suitable 4" replacement comes out on t-mobile.
it works!
this by far is the best solution!

HOLY ****?
i got 10 satellites in 5 seconds, then they all started connecting and now my accuracy is 12 meters???
I think your all connected to wifi, maybe thats why your getting good locks. Disable it and try again.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
I was out walking my dog this morning (no wifi) and while yes I was in a clearing, I turned on GPS Status for the first time since installing the new rom so it came up with the default html page explaining GPS Status, but I read it before so I closed it immediately and was already locked onto 8/11 birds. 2 seconds maybe. 7m accuracy.
On the flip side when I first got my phone I tried to use it as a GPS to navigate and drove around for 30 minutes without ever locking onto a single bird.
I understand and do believe there is a hardware problem with many Vibrants however I also believe that there has been a HUGE software problem as well.

I've been using OP's "fix" for 3 days and so far it's working very well. I typically get locks in 10s or less, and accuracy 15-30 ft, inside. I nearly always disable wi-fi when I test GPS, but I've tried it both ways with this setup and it's working virtually the same either way.
At this point my only reservation is I've seen so many similar suggestions to tweak some setting that don't really pan out over time. This one may do the same, but so far so good.
I have done nothing but installed axura rom.ine locks in couple of seconds and works flawllesly. Even the accuracy is fantastic.

I had applied both the hardware and software fixes while using many versions of Nero and my GPS would never get quick locks, usually it wouldn't lock at all.
Flashing Axura fixed my GPS too. Locks within seconds and has 7-9 meter accuracy.
Axura also fixed my fiance's GPS (with no hardware fix). She had the same issues with every other rom, slow/no locks. So I know it wasn't only my device.
I don't know what method Devs4Android used to fix the GPS, but it works perfectly. They need to sell the fix to Samsung so customers can get functioning GPS out of the box.
never had a problem with the gps locking on to sats and getting 20-40 foot accuracy. the problem is the drifting and staying locked once you start moving or just standing there. that is the problem i have. driving down the highway and bam your on the other side going the wrong way, or in the middle of the field a mile away. that is problem i have

Thankfully, Axura fixed that for me as well. Not only does it lock fast, but its accurate too.
After 2 days.
Last 2 days, I've tested my GPS in some different scenarios. In every one it has been quick and accurate enough.
I got 8 satellites in average, and the accuracy was of around 7-8 meters, something that has never happened before. I did the hardware fix, and it helped with the SNR values, but this is the definite best solution yet!
I'm still testing, but I've got a very good feeling about this method.
The only difference I see between this "fix" and other "fixes" is changing the SUPL server to supl.nokia.com. Since the original thread came from a Chinese forum, I'm guessing the SUPL server might work well in China. Not sure how effective this would be in the US or other countries.
That said, this isn't really a fix. All it does is change the SUPL server, which for most of us (using supl.google.com) works just fine. The Cold Start -> Delete GPS Data -> Lock -> Hot Start method will work just once because it clears bad cached GPS data if you've moved, but it's old news (dozens of other threads on this one) and it's not really a "fix."
The hardware fix is still one of the few real fixes out there.

I agree with what you say, however, I've been using OP's suggested settings for 4 days and see a significant improvement in lock times (only exception is I leave it set to Coldstart). I've been turning my phone off at night and after booting yesterday morning it locked in 14s first time, this morning in 7s. I know lock times can vary depending on where the sats happen to be at that moment, but this performance is much better than I was getting previously, which was in the 1-4 min range on first lock of the day. It's so simple to try there's no real reason not to see if it helps, unless you're already getting lock times like this. Only time will tell if it lasts, but so far so good.
(Running pure stock JI6, and I've also done the HW fix posted in the sticky, which definitely improved my SNRs.)
This worked for me. Please post comments here in this thread about how it worked for you.
I just wanted to sort of repost this information that I feel I stumbled upon. There was an article on the XDA home page about a GPS fix for the GT-I9003.

I am running
Bionix-v 1.3.1 Touchwiz
Kernal 2.6.32.9
Bionix 1.3.1 Light Blue Theme
My GPS was USELESS from day one. Sometimes half worked, other times you would have thought we were in a plane.
I tested my GPS just now before trying this and it found 12 Sats, only had signal on 3, and couldnt lock on any. I started with GPS Aid and all I did was:
Downloaded GPS Aids from the Marketplace.
Opened the App and went into GPS Aids
At the bottom clicked on "Download LTO"
I never changed any settings or any of what the OP said. I also never restarted my phone or anything. Just backed out of the app, opened up GPS Test and found 10 Sats, 5 Locked on with over 30 SNR, and 22ft Accuracy within about 2min. I have to wait until tomorrow to see it in action when I am driving, but things look promising.
thanks for sharing with us, will give it a try and will report back.
very impressed. clicking on thanks button
The only thing thats helping there is changing to supl.google.com port 7276
I've been saying it for months now that this is necessary, since the default supl server is actually offline. If you try hitting it from a browser you will even get one of those sites selling the domain.
Thank you!
I just tried mine last night while driving around at work(I cover a large area). Not only could I get a lock without a problem everywhere I went. But it actually showed me going ON THE ROAD let alone the right road. I could not get it to mess up. I turned SAT on and off a few diff times, restarted phone. The only thing that varied was the amount of time it took for the first lock. It still only took 5min at most and at one point I had 19ft accuracy.
so...YAY! My $600 "Smart Phone" can now do what a crackberry has been able to do for years and I found the fix on accident.
I tried everything in the "Vibrant Forum" and nothing worked. I had given up.I didnt think this was going to work because it was for a diff phone, but hey, I"m happy to know it helped people and appreciate all the "Thank You"

Funny thing is I never changed any of that. Mine is all still at default "www.spirent-lcs.com at port :7275"

If you try to go to any of those in a browser it says the same thing, damn some people ..... They wouldn't put a server in there as a stock server if it was offline you idiot. I'm sorry, I don't normally go at someone like this, but that was probably the dumbest statement I have heard in a very long time.

No, you are the one who is making a dumb statement. If you know what you are doing and try to hit supl.google.com on port 7276 it will show it is working as a supl server. Not so with the default one, there is simply nothing there but a placeholder, which means if you use it you are NOT accessing SUPL data for GPS assist. I've tested it on two vibrants side by side, the one on default would NOT access GPS data and thus took way longer to get a lock, until moved to a working SUPL server.
gg on your effort of turning XDA into the cess pit that its becoming.

My Telus Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G+ (SGH-T959D) is supposedly to be a close bro to the T-mobile Vibrant.
====================== =============
GPS is a constant Not-Sure item on my phone.
Never know when it will/will not work. I was advised to up-plug/re-plug the battery when it failed.
After unpluging/repluging the battery, it has been working for the last 3 days as observed in the morning/noon running errands.
-- Using lbstestmode ; GPS status to monitor the status.
For supl/port, tried the values suggested, but found it would work just as well with:
* SUPL: Blank (typed in spaces; otherwise reverted to the factory value)
* Port: "7" (must have one value, otherwise reverted to the factory value)
-- Took about 5~10 minutes to see up to 10 satellites, and locking up (not all) satellites would seem requiring some sort of network connections (?)
UPDATE:
My GPS is still working. The only thing I notice is sometimes if I feel like its taking too long to lock on, I run GPS Aids and re download LTO. Then it locks instantly. But other than that it works great. I will def be donating/buying the Donate version of GPS Aids, it fixed my phone
