XDA_UC Help !!! - HD2 General

i have read and searched and cannot find oat sorry for asking newbie question
I have the latest ENERGY Rom installed and on my storage card i have the XDA_UC folder and i have cabs in there that on first boot install to my device,
How to i get cabs to be installed in the storage card, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any cabs placed in XDA_UC\SD will require a user input
this will allow you pick the install location.
also of you look in the XDA_UC thread it mentions this in the 1st post
.cab files in "\Storage Card\XDA_UC\Storage", These cab files will be tempted to install to Storage Location
i have not tried it but assume its what your after
Usually though i have only 1 cab (fpsece) i install to the SD card as its almost always better to install software to the phone

hanks for the answer but have tried the \Storage option and nothing happens

many cabs are hard coded to install to phone memory regardless of where you try to install them. perhaps what you are trying to install is one of these?
for example, cookies home tab mod replaces files in the windows folder, so cannot (i assume? certainly 'should' not) be installed anywhere else, regardless of if you choose sd card during install.

Mine doesn't work either, on EnergyROM 6.5.5 CHT, I slavishly followed Nunsky's instructions, and when I manually install the cabs, they do install into either main or storage card memory just fine.

Are your applications already installed before you update your rom on the SD. if so you just need to add a shortcut back to the start menu which XDA_Uc can do from the start (or start menu i cannot remember) folder. i backup my start menu before i update then just restore after update

Install Programs from SD...Field recovery tip...

Just thought I'd share this for those that don't know about it.
When you install programs from your computer onto your phone, CAB files are typically left on your computer. Either in a newly created program directory or under the ActiveSync directory.
Since I work in the field a lot and have had to hard reset on the fly and away from my ActiveSync, I've copied all of these CABS to my SD card. If I ever have to do a hard reset, I can also install ALL of the programs I use on my phone directly from the card. This can be done manually or scripted, whichever you chose. I've chosen to do it manually because of several reasons.
I just created a folder on my SD card named !Install! and when I need to install something while away from my system I go here.

Excellent advice. Never thought of sharing that useful bit of 'good practise'. I allways have a 'cabs' folder just for this on my SD card.
Also to add to this...Rebuilds can take hours just because of a lack of organisation, so I put all software in to respective folders, i.e;
1) Cabs
2) Exe's
3) Serails
This really saves a lot of time, not having to look for each app and their respective serials.
Then I zip it all up ready for a rebuild or fresh build when changing ROMs, as the old backup files from a previous ROM should not be used....but that's really for another thread.
Cheers for that ltxda, great suggestion for the noobs and all.
Thanks for adding to it!
Oh yea, one more thing. I'm picky about what I install to ROM, SD, MD...so I have a folder in each program install folder and name it respectively - Device - SD - MD, so I don't have to think when reinstalling everything.
Yes it is a good idea, just don't turn on encryption? oops just installed new rom, took a minute or ten to find out why none of the cabs would install! Doh

LOL, for sure.
Of course we could use a backup restore...before someone mentions it...but if my phone is buggy and locking up, I don't want to restore anything...fresh install for everything....also of course like Mackaby mentioned...after ROM upgrade. ;-)
How ever true your advice is, I find it very cumbersome to get everything installed again from the CABs and more important ... to get all settings again the way you like it.
I rather advice to spend 20USD on this great backup program

, (regularly) make a self extracting compressed image to the SD card,
and you will be up and running again after a hard-reset in ~10min with all your own settings.
Oh and one more thing....just in case you have to reflash your device from the field...if you ever do..dont forget to copy the apppropriate file to the SD card and ensure you have a copy of the how to flash from SD instructions. Doubt you might ever need this but you never know. Better prepared than sorry.
I have a 2gb MicroSD and carry all my install cabs on there, with skins, and serials for apps I need to install from scratch. That way if I am ever travelling and foobar things badly, I can hard reset and reinstall. Keep a PPC Contacts backup, and/or a full backup app, and you should be able to get working again quite quickly.
To grab cabs, monitor your temp folder, activesync folder, and sometimes specific third party folders (eg SPB might make a folder in \program files\spb with cabs in).
Additionally, use the Universal Extractor to extract cabs from somet troublesome apps.

cab installation - can i put it on my storage card?

I just tried to install a cab file and it puts it on my device without asking me where to put it. Is there a way to force it to install on my storage card?
thanks in advance

What operating system are you using? Because if you're using wm5 or wm6, it gives you the option on installation directory with the exception of certain few files (system files I guess) that installs directly onto your device.

Some CAB files a restricted to be installed only on the device.
In some cases it is neccassary to limit the installation routine to the device, e.g. system files or system tools.
There is no way in altering that, but you can always install the cab file,
then copy the installed files to your storage card and uninstall the files on your device.
Yeah, usually if it doesnt ask you where you want to put it, then it HAS to go on the device for stablility reasons. Usually....
Normally it always asks me where to install a cab, but some files will always install on the device for system and stability reasons, Progs that are ran constantly are better off installed on device memory
sometimes it's on autorun and autoinstalls to the device..
if you are downloading+installing via your phone.. try using opera.. it should give you the option to save the file.. then save it and run the cab.
if it doesn't do that. then that sucks

Help for total, 100% clueless beginner

Sorry for new thread, tried searching for things like a Beginner's Guide but no luck...
The HD2 is my first foray into WM phones and I just need a bit of help understanding how to install all the programs and tweaks you clever folks on here cook up. For starters I want to disable the clock flip animation when you switch to the Home screen:
1. You can disable this extra animation so it only flips when it needs to flips. Download the modified manila file at the end of this post.
Done
2. Disable HTC Sense in Today settings.
Done
3. Backup original Windows file (you are going to overwrite) to your SD card.
OK, this is where I fall down
4. Extract downloaded file to Windows directory on your device (overwriting the original).
Not sure here either, but I think this will be obvious once I connect to my PC...?
5. Enable HTC Sense again in today settings.
I'll be OK here
Also, in the Hints & Tips thread, it talks about installing a program to edit the registry for a lot of the tweaks. Would something like Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) be OK for that?
search for cab file, on leo themes and app, 1sr row, the one with touch x . copy it to your phone/storage card , launch it and softreset. no need for backup
Download the cab-file called "Touch_X_Homescreen_Flip_clock_OFF.cab" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
Notice that this is a cab-file and not a rar/zip(/whatever)-file.
Cab-files are so to say "setup-files" for windows mobile.
That said, after you've downloaded the file to your computer, simply copy/move it to your mobile. Now from your mobile, run this file, and it will install as a program.
This means that you can uninstall it by going to settings->programs....
My first tip would be too make sure you install/store everything on the storage card and not the device. this is one mistake I made and you'll run out of space quickly.
Secondly, decide now if you're going to install the lastest ROM. best to do it now before you get into setting up and tweaking otherwise you'll be in my situation again where you'll have to clear everything and start from scratch.
And yes, it's easiest to download CABs to your PC, transfer them over USB to the storage card, then install from there.

Question about reflash Rom

hi , i am just wondering is there any way to reinstall all my apps after i reflash to other chef roms. something like i am able to ghost my current apps installed over to new rom or the other way is to install back 1 by 1?
do i need to reformat my memory card after hardset /reflash rom cause i have apps/games installed on my memory card.
thanks for reading.
upz for help~
yeah do a search for xda_uc, also toms autoinstall and sashimi. often custom roms offer these features, which are you using?
yeah that version of dutty uses toms autoinstall this is quoted from post 1 of your rom thread
AutoInstall thanks to Tom
>> Create folder in Root of Storage Card called [ Autoinstall ]
>> Copy all your cabs in that folder
>> After Flash , and during customisations all your cab will be installed.
>> Also set your cabs to read only
>> So get Your Storage Card prepared with all your cabs to install.
cool! thanks dude.. !
but how can i determine which cab is install on device or storage?
by default they all go to the phone the only way would be to modify the cab itself and change the %install directory% to the Storage Card with something like CeCabManager
lots of apps dont need to be reinstalled. They just need the shortcut adding to start menu again.
After you hard reset, browse to \storage card\yourapp\ and try to run the .exe If the program works, then you dont need to reinstall it. Just create a link to that .exe in \windows\start menu\ and you will be able to see it and select it for quicklinks and whatever.

How to install apps

So I tried to search but couldnt find what I was looking for.
How do you exactly install apps, themes or games properly on this phone. The only program I found that somewhat worked was Omarket. Reading here in the forums people suggested that all the apps or themes I would need were here. I found both apps and themes I like but cannot get them on the phone to work.
I download the the theme or app on my computer then I make a custom folder on my SD card then extract all the files to that folder. When I go back into my phone and try to do a set up I get taken to a blank white screen that says something like
file://localhost/Storage%20Card/<name of program or app>
Im new to this phone been trying to research alot about it.
I tried finding all the "noob" post to read but maybe Im not finding the right ones
If for some reason you needed to know my software info here it is.
ROM Version: 2.13.531.1 (90963) WWE
Radio Version: 2.10.20.26
Thx for any and all of your help. Im trying! =P
Apps that can be installed from the phone will have a .cab extension. Locate the folder with the .cab files and click on one. It will start the install process.
Apps with .exe extensions will need to be loaded from you computer. Make sure your device is hooked up via activesync and click the .exe app you want to install.
So for the .cab files I have to go to the website from my phone and download them there for it to be on my phone properly? Or is there any way I can download them to my desktop then transfer it to my phone and then install it on my phone?

"How to install a cab.
You simply download the cab to your computer. Then, copy/paste the cab to your storage card using the USB connection. Then, using your file explore on your phone locate the cab file in your storage card and install it by double taping the file. Install onto device or storage card. I prefer installing onto the storage card."
Take a look at my sticky, you'll find it to be very helpful.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663845
you can do it either way. If you download them to your desktop, connect your phone via active sync, copy the cab and past it to where ever it is that you want to save it on your phone. (sd card is prefferred for space reasons) after that, open the location where the cab is stored and you can run it from there. If you download from your phone, determine where you want to save the cab, your options will be device and card. You will also have an option to save in a specific folder. after that, locate the cab and instal.
