Hey guys I've read about another serious issue plaguing the Vibrant and unfortunately it has been affecting mine too. It's with the Music player. Every time I play a song, there's a lag or a stutter in the song.
Regardless of what song is playing, there's a serious stutter, and it takes away from the music experience.
At this point I'm ready to refund this baby back to bell and unfortunately am considering the Iphone.
I really don't want to but the phone is kinda laggy and with the gps + stuttering problem it's getting quite annoying.
Anyone else have this experience while listening to music? Or is it just mine? It's unfortunate cause the screen is quite nice and responsive at times.
It just seems like Samsung hasn't really fixed any of the bugs plaguing the phone.
What are the specifics on your media? Bitrate/encoder/file type? Are you playing off the internal or external sd?
The encoders are all across the platforms. I have .mp3's to .Wma's. Every song has a time where it stutters.
When I had my g1 this stutter and pause in the music happens when I recieved a text message.
It's just a really fast little pause and it really disturbs the music.
I'm using internal memory.
Same problem here . . .
I am using the internal SD card as well
mp3s
196kbps fixed
44.1 khz
basically as vanilla as you can get. . .
I tried airplane mode, just in case it was a sync issue, no luck
I just put a few songs on the 2gb sd card that came with the phone and I tried to play a song and the screen went black and my touch sensitive buttons were light up lol and it restarted itself.
Going back to my Zune HD/iPod lol. oh well. When it comes to media the iPhone takes the cake. Android is more nerdy and customizable.
Doesn't bother me too much. I would have personally like to have an all in one device but dont have the money for ATT's plan and prefer androids customization over iPhones.

The Galaxy S Vibrant is supposed to be the best android phone for music on the market. Why should you cough up the dough and then go back to listening on another player?
It's not right. I'm beginning to think it's a software issue.
I've had no problems at all with the music player. Music in mp3 format at 320kbs.

I have about 8GB of MP3, WMA and 4GB of FLAC songs on a class 4 microSD card. I don't have any issue as you describe. Try to reset your phone first.
iPhone and Zune only play few formats. Drag and drop FTW. What a PITA when I have you sync everything to my iPhone using that stupid iTunes. To be able to play my song/movie without converting it to another format FTW too.
Ive noticed this issue as well. The best way to describe it, is like a cd skipping real fast. It's less than a second long, and it's literally a skip in playback.
I initially suspected it was a small lag spike from the screen shutting off, but Ive had it happen twice in a row after the screen is already off.
There must be some process running in the background that is causing this to happen, because it's totally random. It does happen after the screen shuts off though.
I've been using mine with a class 2 card and about 14 gb of music of mostly mp3s. I get an _occasional_ skip but nothing more than I would get with any other music player. Haven't noticed anything else going on at the same time though.
I think it's your device, though IMO if that's enough to make you want an iphone then you're probably missing the point of android in the first place.
This happen to me too. The stock music player. Though, I have no problem with other music player apps eg. 3(cube), mixzing.
It's likely to be a widget. For me it was Gauge Battery.
Im not getting any type of stuttering.... This plays music flawlessly...
Theres got to be something going on with your device. Also I would have heard about this issue alot more if everyone was experiencing it...

Agreed. I don't have this problem either or have never noticed it. The only time I noticed skipping, it was a singular song I had on the device. Not a random occurrence as explained.
That makes issue 3 for the Vibrant that I don't have

The same goes for me. No problems with any other music player only the stock. It's not even close to bad enough to switch from this device only happens once every so often.
Ok tried simply music app and playing from a class 6 card. Still getting the stutter. I am using beautiful widget weather app, will disable it and try again. . .

I have about 5G of music from itunes on my vibrant. I used isync app from the market to get the music from my itunes to my phone, I have had the phone 3 weeks and have experienced ZERO lag, stutter, or skipping...but my uncle who got the phone the same day from the store (i received mine through mail) had the same problem with the stock player. I think its because he used widows media player.

I have the studder issue. Uploaded through windows media player. It seems to happen when i load the first song, and happens more if I'm listening to music while I search through the the music lists. When the screen is inactive it works perfectly unless its the first song. I have almost 8 gigs of music
It was the weather widget that was causing the problem, thanks heygrl.

Sorry for hijacking kinda
but I am about to retry it once again. I don't have a SD card other than the 2gb that came with the phone should I put the music on the phones internal and see if I get studdering again?

So, I have noticed an issue. I am on Kumar's Classic ROM, which I LOVE, but I am pretty sure this happened on the stock ROM as well...
Here is the issue and use environment: I keep my music on the SD Card, and I play it through the music tab. Everything is fine generally speaking. It finds the music after a few seconds on a fresh boot, reads the files and plays them fine. That is when the device is on/screen displayed. I have noticed that a lot of them time, as soon as the screen locks, the music will pause every 5-10 seconds, stay that way for about 1 second, then continue playing... over and over. As soon as I unlock the screen, it is back to normal, then when I lock it, the issue returns. It even did this a little while streaming Slacker yesterday, then cleared up after a while.
I can't figure out what would cause this. I have also noticed that movies on the SD will play fine for e a while, then the video will lag while the audio is fine, and then the video will play at like 3-4x to catch up to the audio...
Odd issues, and I'm hoping someone here has an easy fix for me. I did a search and didn't see anything...
Have you ever reformatted the card since getting it? That might be a good place to start. Also, if you have another usable card handy, just to put some music on and test with, it'll help pinpoint if the issue is the card or the phone at least.
Good idea, thx...
I had similar issues with other music programs and video programs too. Not the stock ones. Pretty much what seemed to be happening is when the phone went to sleep it cut off its connection using up its buffer then stopping. Then when I woke it up it would start playing again. Best solution I have found was to just use mortplayer. This seems to love the HD2. I will get about .01 second skip when it locks, and then when it sleeps but pretty much doesn't miss a beat. I always listen to streaming radio too so that may be an issue of mine. Since your running music off a sd card and the stock HD2 sim cards are supposed to suck you may wanna try a different card to test it.
this happened to me when i set the lockscreen to show the animated arrows. It seems it animates them every few seconds even when the screen is off.
Disabled them again and it was fixed.
Been editing the lockscreen? or installed a new lockscreen recently?
I'll try both of those suggestions, thanks guys!
I would really like to keep using the sense music player though, as I like it a lot. This also seems to happen in Slacker too...
How do I disable the arrows?
No playing with the lock screen. Only the stock one, or any edits that come with cooked ROMs. However, this has been happening through multiple ROMs, and with hard resets each time...

not the arrows then, , something running in teh background, that the phone is having to ramp up the processor to perform.
Dunno what to suggest, sorry, maybe something installed to sd card, that is making the music pause when read? does it do it when the mp3 is on main memory?
I9000 cannot play mp3 smoothly unless completely disable data network.
Does any feel that the I9000 cannot play mp3 smoothly?
It always has some pause (0.3~0.5 seconds) during play any mp3 even in 128 kbps CBR [around pause for 5-8 times in each 5 mins mp3]
I just found that, if GPRS/EDGE/3G(HSDPA) is turned on, this problem will be happened. That is no problem with Wifi.
One more, if you try to keep the Data connection e.g. downloading a large file via GPRS, that will be no problem as well.
I do thank that when any app/module want to access the Internet and "start" the data connection, this "start" will trigger the mp3 un-smooth problem.
Anyone playing with issue as well?
Am I alone?
Have no issues of the sort, FLAC and mp3s play flawlessly.
Stock rom, JF3, non-rooted, no ATK or taskkillers in general.
maybe your phone is sync-ing too much stuff in the background
try turning off Facebook, email sync, tweet sync, etc, etc
I played a lot of Flacs with mine and it did have tiny pauses now and then as you described. Sounded as if the cpu was busy (synching or doing something else) or maybe there was heavy I/O activity and we know the SGS isn't brilliant at that.... in any case, decoding lagged sometimes.
Still, the pauses were fractions of a second and fairly rare (perhaps once every 15 minutes or so). Audible, but tolerable given the overall good audio quality of the gadget.
I am new from i9000 and I have the similar issue.
Although I had disable all the network traffic (APN/WIFI) and I was only running the MP3 player, the song still played with some stop.
I had try lots of MP3 player apps, such as Astro player, TuneWiki, Kiss Music Player, MixZing, etc. No one can play song smoothly on my device.
Can anyone tell me how to improve it?
glitches if flac
Just another confirmation I've noticed the same issue with flacs on JG4. I get a glitch every 5 to 10 minutes. I've not listened to many mp3s so I don't know if it happens with them as well.
Yeah mines the same. Gets worse when the signal is dropping, almost useless when im on the train.
Contemplating about using my trusty itouch just to listen to music. Btw its unrooted with the one click lag fix

Its the firmware, I have tried many since the phone came out and about 50% of the firmwares have this problem, songs fine but every few mins there is a tiny pause/skip or what you want to call it, I have just moved to jpc but not tried any music yet to see if this one has same issue, but seeing as most are leaked there is always going to be an issue with something, guess the time we can really complain is when the real 2.2 comes out, if that has problems then its fair to have a go at Samsung.
I've upgraded to JM2 now, and I still don't have any troubles with my music player. mp3s and FLAC, no skipping or anything. Just smooth.
Oh and btw, I play my music from the internal SD.
Same problem here on JM6 (with and without ryanZa lagfix) with mp3's and videos.
No matter if internal or external sd card. Glitches occur approx. every 3- 5 minutes.
I'm not sure but i think there were no problems with stock JF3 firmware.
Edit:
Flashed back to stock JF3.
Music is playing flawlessly.

I'd like to change to I9000 and now I have HTC Desire, and I know what about you say. Under Eclair the garbage collection is terrible. Every garbage collection takes 0.1-3 secs, and then everything frezze.
Don't worry the Froyo will cure this - have to wait only 2-3 wks.
Hey all,
I typically never register and make my first a complaint/help post, but this problem has been plaguing me ever since I first got my Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell (i9000m) a week ago and now I'm pretty much desperate in looking for a solution, as music listening happens to be a HUGE part of my Smartphone experience. I love the phone with everything else thus far after coming over from iphone 3G and definitely wouldn't want to change the phone just because of this problem... but it's becoming way too persistent for me that I'm actually considering switching back to Apple (even though I don't want to).
Here's the problem: The music player seems absolutely incapable of smooth playback of music for whatever reason. In my ~10 years of music phone experience (I got the first ever mp3 phone released here in Canada - the Samsung Uproar, many years ago actually), this phone is the first to have such problems. Here are some symptoms and settings, music playing on both the stock music player as well as btunes that I downloaded and paid for:
- MP3/AAC files stutter/skip seemingly at random. Not majorly but for half a second or so at different parts of the song. Happens somewhat consistently, every 4 minutes or so, but at random.
- Here's an interesting thing; the ability for FLAC playback is one of the main reasons why I purchased this phone, and so far it's incapable of doing so properly. EACH AND EVERY FLAC song I have stutter/skips at a certain point for 3/4th of a second... and the funny thing is that this seems to occur at exact same point of each song.
- Before any of you question the point, 95% of these are self-ripped FLAC/mp3 files from my own cd's, using EAC. I'm an audiophile and know well how to rip songs properly, so I know this is 100% NOT the problem of the files itself... especially since they play perfectly in every single music player software/mp3 player/cellphone that I've ever used.
- This happens in both stock touchwiz and launcher pro UI that I'm currently using.
- Happens in both stock player and btunes as mentioned earlier. Interesting thing about FLAC files; I mentioned before each files skip at same parts of the song... interestingly the stock player and btunes seem to skip with these files at DIFFERENT parts of the song, yet the part where they stutter/skip is still the same for each player. So for example, Song A would skip on stock player at 3:31 point of the song each time, but that same Song A would skip on btunes at 2:23 point of the song every time...
- I do have beautiful weather widget running, and will test it out soon to see if this is the problem (haven't got around to doing so yet and don't have headphones with me atm)... but even if it is, it would seem appaling to me that a widget and a simple resource-light music player can't coexist... doesn't make sense to me and kind of misses the point of a high end smartphone.
- I'm not going to use Airplane mode as a solution, since this pretty much misses the point of the smartphone as I've said above. Besides, I've tried it already and music STILL stuttered/skipped!
- As I have high end headphones/IEMs such as Audio Technica ESW10JPN and Shure SE530, it's definitely not the headphones, and they work flawlessly in any other player.
- Drag and drop, media player, Kies, you name it... every method of transfer of songs gives the same problem.
- Internal SD card, External SD card... doesn't seem to make a lick of difference either.
- I have the stock JG9 firmware that my phone came with. I would download the new one that is apparently out for my i9000m version (JH2) if Kies ever detects the damn thing (it's never there as an update)...
So any clues on how to solve this annoying problem. As I've said, this is the ONLY problem I've had with my unit (my GPS is fine, and phone runs lag free) and its a darn shame because music playback is a huge part of my smartphone use. Is this likely a firmware problem? Or just a problem with memory use? If I don't have to I'd REALLY rather not root the phone but if that solves it for certain then I'm actually willing to look into it... that's how desperate I am to solve this problem.
I'd appreciate any input in this matter... thanks in advance.
I had the same problem, and pinned it down to one of my widgets hogging all the resources. As soon as I disabled the widget, playback was fine again.
another tip

yes, as you need to install another piece of software to do the trick
but you can always Un-root, if you ever need to send your phone for warranty

Probably more bad coding of the free widgets rather than the phone not being capable. I can write a 4 line .vbs script that will cane most PC's and drag them to their knees.
Have you done a factory reset? No problems here, love the music player. I have beautiful home also

mine doesnt skip at all even while using gps.. i would recommend that you check your sd card.. maybe bad or too slow..
that is indeed a posibility.
in older devices low speed SD cards can cause data skip
but now in days most SD cards are pretty fast, so the problem shouldn't be there, yet you'll never know, so that's the posibility
Nah. My external micro SD is a class 6 Sandisk, and I'm sure the internal one isn't all that bad either... comes with the phone after all. Pretty sure it isn't the SD Cards as the problem happens on both. Tried the music player without any widgets running, with the phone connected through headphone jack into AUX of my car for about 6 minutes at lunch... and it actually played pretty smoothly... but I'll have to try that out more extensively later, plus try it with FLAC files as well.
Haven't done a factory reset (apparently it doesn't do much for ppl who's had same problems), but I'll be flashing to the JH2 later on today so I'm guessing that'll be more or less the same thing... hoping that it makes some sort of difference.
Alright, I was able to install JH2 firmware and play around with turning off the widgets and such... and it did not do ANYTHING with the FLAC Playback problems. The same tracks always still skip at the same place in the song, and no FLAC files seems to play 100% smoothly... and the tags are still broken. Turning off the widgets don't stop these glitches. MP3's on the other hand seems perfect for the most part unless I missed something... At this point, I'm just inclined to believe that FLAC support for Galaxy at this time is heavily glitched. Does anyone else here have perfect FLAC playback? Totally smooth with perfect tags and everything? If you do, please post the firmware and settings and all that.
Ugh, at least even iphone 4 had a perfect music player and a perfect lossless support, although it's ALAC instead of FLAC... strongly considering it now if the player is going to remain glitched like this. The phone is so excellent besides this, that I'd hate to do that... but music listening just happens to be a big part of my smartphone use.
other users have reported the same findings about FLAC
this is just a software thing, it'll be fixed in no time

My biggest concern is that FLAC playback is solely Samsung's responsibility apparently (Android apparently doesn't natively support FLAC, so I don't expect Froyo to do much), and I really doubt that it's one of their priorities for fixing at the moment (especially with the whole GPS issue). It's up to Sammy to fix it, but I can't say I have too much faith.
Well, since I've got an android phone and all I think I'll root this phone and play around with the setCPU stuff, and see if that helps. This fixed it for one of the users from what I've read.
I've got no problems playing any FLAC file on my default Samsung player very smooth. I haven't rooted my phone or ever installed custom firmwares. I am running the new official UK firmware XXJM1.

FLAC Bitrate: 1411Kbps ~ Lossless Audio Codec File
Wow... well, it's at least a good news that someone else can playback FLAC smoothly without any problems... and it also means that if this is true, then its more than likely that this is purely a firmware issue... which means it's more than possible for Samsung to fix this.
Factory reset solved media issues for several people I know of. So if you didn't reset your phone when you got it, do so now and chances are you are rid of the problem.

I've flashed to a new firmware since I first got it. Wouldn't this technically be the same thing as factory reset since the initial firmware/contents got wiped out clean and replaced by a brand new one? And even after that unfortunately the audio problems still remain for me...

It's been on external SD card since the second day. Doesn't seem to matter for me at all since the files skip the same way on both internal and external card.
I'm going to go to the Bell Store anyway today (to discuss phone plan stuff), so I think I'll take my SD card with me and try the demo models to see if there are same playback problems on those. I really doubt this is due to hardware but hey, since I'll be there anyway, why not.
Hey guys,
Has anyone noticed that when playing music in the vibrant that their songs skip or cut out for a split second like 3 or 4 times a song? This is driving me nuts as I use my phone to play my mp3s in my car every single day and its very noticeable. I have tried other players like mixzing and same thing...
I have owned a bunch of android phones and haven't had this problem on any others.
Thanks...
Oh I should add that I am stock 2.1 with ryanzas oc lag fix but a friend of mine is still stock and experiencing the same problems just not as bad.
Ive noticed the same thing. Mostly when a notification or call comes in but sometimes when nothing else is happening. Yea really annoying.
My phone is completely stock except for being rooted.
It also happens when wifi is turned on when wifi is off it doesn't happen

I've never had this problem but I have experienced "the beat" being extremely loud and the lyrics being too soft, its a hardware problem, if the headphones aren't plugged.in the exact way, this will happen. Perhaps this is what is causing your problems as well, also this should be in the Q&A Section
I get a small skip every couple of songs using MixZing. I have Wifi off, so that's not the issue for me. I don't really notice it. Is your music on the internal or the SD card?
I have tried both the internal and a couple external memory cards...i actually swapped my vibrant at t mobile today to see if a new one would help...the new one does it but not as much. However given how much I use my phone for music its enough for me to return and go back to my android hd2...i like this phone better over all but music is pretty much number one cuz I am a musician... I tried lowering everything on the eq to the bottom...didn't help... Seems like an issue like you might get streaming pandora, where its running out of buffer so to speak...weird.
Wifi on or off and other stuff like syncing off doesn't help either...also have a task manager that will give me 200 mb free ram that doesnt help either.
sorry for postingin the wrong section btw
I would think this is fine in the General area.
fliplovin', when you talk about the EQ, do you mean in MixZing? Because the EQ in MixZing tells you it will cause high CPU usage, so I would turn that off completely.
no , there is an equalizer in the stock music player under settings... it allows you to not only do preset values, but also custom channel per channel... it also has effects like arena, and wide... etc..
i have tried EVERY setting possible... i am now about to flash a custom rom and see if that helps...
one thing that seemed to help temporarily was to use the system manager and close everything leaving me with 200 mb available memory and turn the eq all the way down, however, that made my max volume quite a bit lower... not exactly what i want to do.

You ever get this figured out? its been pissing me off really bad as of late. I want to keep the phone stock, but i would still like to know if flashing to a new rom helped
the only time it's skipped for me is when installing apps etc..
This same thing happened to me when I had Weather Widget installed. It seemed that every time it would try to update, the music player would skip. Using fancy widget now and never had the problem again
Music player and Google Listen both stutter a bit for me when playing a large file (over 5mb or so) and it tends to stop after the first 30 seconds. This is when wifi and gps are turned off and my phone isn't doing anything.
I did a clean flash today to JFD, then JI6. I noticed while listening to music on the way home from work tonight, there was no skipping in MixZing. I'm only doing the "/data/data to NAND" hack.
Do any of you have battery widgets/Accurate battery mods?
They can cause skipping and choppiness throughout the entire OS.
I had the same problem. I had world Analog and digital widget installed. I read on the T mo forums about some clock widget causing it so i uninstalled mine.
No more problems with the music.
I also use "Zimly" for audio player.
For Acurate battery info i use "MiniInfo" its not causing any problems.
Cos im now storing all my music on my SD card, when i turn off or reboot my phone, poweramp losses all of my playlists and music.
Anyone now a way to fix This?
It's happened before when I had the S4 and any phone where as card is storing music.
Never on my S6 which was all internal.
That sounds bizarre. I have the same combination, music on SD and Poweramp and have no such issues. I would say it's your memory card playing up. Maybe try a different one? I have a Samsung EVO Plus and it's working great.

Have you turned phone off and on etc?
It always has happened in past to me and again yesterday.
I'll be buying a bigger storage card shortly so will see then if still doing.
Yes, no matter what I do the music and play lists remain. To rule out a software bug have you tried another music player? I love Poweramp but use it alongside a different player. I can recommend Pi Music Player. If that works fine then it could be an issue with your Poweramp.
I think it's likely to be the SD card though. Maybe try something like this, fast and not that expensive.
