How often does Latitude update your position - Galaxy S I9000 General

For me there seems to be hours between each update, but for my friends on Desire never more than 30 min...

Google says it depends on different things, like if you're moving..

Is not only the GPS Files....

I can confirm.. that the GPS issue is not fixed only with the GPS Files from the leaked Rom. At least on my device..
I have tried both ROMS (Bionix and Twiz) and I'm never able to get a GPS fix unless I wait like 2 minutes for the first time and then I have to Open GPS Status (market app) to kind of wake up the GPS and then get a fix. I have tried several times and is always the same result... on the other hand... once I install the JI2 leaked ROM... I can get a GPS Fix in less than 20 Seconds in the first try, ALWAYS,, after that I can go to Maps and get a fix in less than 3 seconds every time. So, I'm sure that there is something else in the ROM that is fixing the GPS...
I installed the gps fix only and it was working pretty good for me where I live in Florida. However, tuesday I flew out to Ohio on business and it was pretty hit and miss there. Currently I'm in North Carolina and I can't get a flicker of a signal on the gps. Kind of disappointing after thinking it was fixed.

I honestly think the exact same thing. I applied the gps fix from the leaked j12 update and it always takes 2 min to get a lock. After I reboot my phone, I always have to wait another 2 min.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant
I get a fix in under 5 seconds - with WiFi off. The JI2 update fixes the compass which can and will mess up Navigation like Google Nav.
To play that broken record
Sats with SNR's below 17 will 1) Not Lock & 2) will show at 0 SNR with GPSTest regardless of what the reading is below 17. This means no GPS for you under poor GPS conditions. Other phones will lock with SNR's below 17 but the fix is less accurate.
Will not lock or it will take a LONG time to lock over WiFi. Disable WiFi for best performance... (odd bug here).
My GPS would just freeze up my phone, after applying the patch not only does the GPS work but i am usually connecting to 7-8 Sats out of 10.
BTW, I asked people in the Captivate forum to list their GPS settings after a successful update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8290175&posted=1#post8290175
There's a new address for the SUPL server:
- h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp
Tried it and I can pick up satellites a bit quicker (subjective impression), but it doesn't really work for me.
Anyone else want to give it a shot?

On the leaked Vibrant ROM, one tester I worked with had very bad performance when changing the server values (not to the address above, which I think comes from the new Captivate firmware, but to the old values floated on the forums weeks ago). After experimenting, he seemed to get the best results simply enabling MS Based mode and leaving those server details stock.
I have come to believe there is not much sense in amateurs playing with the SUPL settings. The operators of the SUPL servers seem to have a relationship with specific carriers, and I think there is some handshaking that goes on. I would advise leaving well enough alone.

Just updated to 2.2 now gps doesnt work!

I just updated to 2.2 last night im on sasktel. Now the gps doesnt work where before it wasnt perfect but worked. It sees a couple satelites but does not lock on any. Any ideas on this?
I also tested JL2 and I agree that it doesn't fix the GPS.
Same here.. on GT-I9000 international, I went from JM1 (Eclair) to JPO (Froyo) and the GPS has become practically useless.
If I were in some country where consumer rights are protected, I would have filed a law suite against Samsung. They advertise the SGS with GPS and they charged money from all of us - and what we are getting is Bu****it.
Same here. I updated to JL2 yesterday and gps is not working
Have you tried JPY yet? I can get a quick lock at home, will give it a try tomorrow in real world terms.
get sgs tools or sgs info...go into gps settings.. set it to cold start... clear gps data... go outsde and let it get first fix in about 10 minutes.. then it should work.
lgkahn: Please explain how to do that.
whats jpy and jpl2? On my build number it says FROYO.UGJL2
cant really explain more than i did sgs info and sgs tools are apps you can get from marketplace.. or use dialer code
*#3214789650#
there are gps diagnostic menus you can get into from them.
one is application setings/start mode
set it to coldstart
then there is another button "delete gps data"
then you go outside ad run the first button "get position test"
Tested the GPS yesterday going from nottingham to birmingham UK, using copilot 8.2. Still sucks. Lost GPS fix 6-7 times on a 55min journey.
Shortest losses were around 4-5 mins and the longest outage was around 15-20 mins.
Acer, Sony and Dell to name a few recall laptops if/when they discover battery and other thermal issues, but stupid Samsung, cheap plastic w4nkers, dont bother acknowledging that there is a CLEAR GPS issue. Atleast recall the units and replace/repair the chipset.
I need a solid fully functional GPS. May just have to keep returning the phone to orange UK until they get fed up and offer a different handset (make/model) as a replacement.
Shame though, i like this phone
I also had non existant GPS after installing JL2.
I went into LBA Test Mode and under Application settings changed Operation Mode from Stand Alone to MS Based.
Also, in SUPL/CP Settings, make sure the server is 'supl.google.com and the server port is 7276
Simple, but it worked for me. I now have 7 satellites in use and it only took about 20 seconds to work.
Ian
w98seeng: Thanks for the info, that worked for me. Right away had 9 sats in view and 9 in use!
My SGS see's birds quicker with "standalone"
If my handset is laying on my desk it will pick up around 8-10 birds, within 10-30 sec... if i hold it up it will see a similar amount and perhaps lock onto 3-5...varies ALOT.
Many have reported better GPS signal by bending the contact towards the GPS antenna..here:

May give it ago.

Google Navigation

I have been trying google navigation a couple of times over the last months.
Most of the time I had set it to sat view just because it looks kind of cool.
In 9 out of 10 cases it will completely hard lock the HD2 after a minute or 30. Basically it means that you have to yank out the battery because the screen is frozen and nothing works anymore to kill the task.
My HD2 is not getting warm or anything, and other navigation software works perfectly.
So bassically it happens on any android build on mine, sd or nand, all the same issue.
Does anyone experience the same?
I drove nearly 400 miles the other day, took 6-7 hrs, used Google Navigation the whole journey without a problem.
Try it on Map view rather than Sat, and see if you have the same problems.
It's working like a charm to me. I'm actually starting to like it.
Yet, i would like to know if any of you know a way to change the navigation language while keeping the device language to spanish.

Yeah, I can imaging if it is the sat view that is causing this.
Haven't tried it without and to be honest not really nice if the whole thing locks up when driving at high speeds.

[RUMOR] GPS Fix on it's way

From Acer. Sorry, no details or ETA at this time. But it's a good rumor non the less.
At least you state it's a rumor. But still, from Acer how? Email support? A phone tech? You bangin' the CEO's daughter?
GPS fix for what? For the fact that I CAN use GPS without wifi?
Yeah, who's the rumor from?
You read it somewhere, after you wrote it? ;-)
did not know we need a gps fix.tell you rumor friend recovery is needed
pleaseeeee
us blonde chics break our stuff alot
giggles
I saw it on another site. They did not provide any more info, hence the word rumor.
Also, for those of you that are lucky enough to have units that have working GPS, good on you. However, there are many of us that can't get any sats to lock.
Although it is a rumor, I'll take it. Here is hoping for a fix soon!
although the app keeps freezing, co-pilot did get a lock in my house
I pull 3/7 in my house, which is a shoddy Mexican affair with lots of cinderblock and rebar, so a real signal killer. 6/9 or so outside. All within a minute of starting.
For you non-workers, I hope there is a fix. For me, I want more video codecs supported.
how about a cell standby fix
I'll take a cell standby fix before GPS. It's killing my battery. Sirplane mode and all.
yea felt like the GPS has worked just fine!
I'm having issues with no GPS even standing outside. It will eventually lock on 1-2 satellites after about 2 minutes when my phone will see 7-8. I'm either going to return or "hope" for a fix. It will not work if there isn't wifi available, so I think it may be a bug.
Anyone else with this problem? Compass is waaaaay off too.
S
number of sats
GPS status locked 4 of 4 in my house in under 45seconds
I chatted with support today they say the GPS is a known issue it will be fixed with a software update no eta
Mine has not been able to lock-on to satellites for several days, but starting last night I noticed that it began working just fine.
gps google maps or tablet issue
i think.the.gps issue is google maps. One you install and run a third/oarty app /utility it works fine. There is no doubt there is a issue.
Try geting co-pilot it will crash on you.several times loading but go slow head to menue settings then sound turn off the startup sound and the beeps. It will become very stable after/and i get a fix on 3 sats in the house in like 1.5 minutes at max. After co/pilot gets a fix i can then launch google nav and it will get a fix nearly instantly sometimes.and sometimes it will have to be restarted several times. With that said even co-polot is not near as accurate as myDelorme on my laptop.from a cold start.it even takes 3 minutesto get a withen 6 inch fix maybe accuracy will come from the update.I really need gps to work so i dont haveto pack my laptop in my workvan with me anymore.
Someone should create a driver for the/delorm earthmate 4 i think is what mine is usb
hint hint
Thanks for letting me rant about this

Wakelocks and 60 Hours of Battery Life

I know that there are several threads about battery life in the General forum, but I decided to create a new one, cause I want this thread to take a different direction, and actually help the owners, which are having problems with kernel wakelocks as me.
So... here it goes. I decided to make a test by using my phone mainly as a PHONE ! From the screenshots you will be able top see exactly what I did with the phone for the last 60 hours. Just to mention that my phone ISN`T ROOTED. Wifi sleep policy set to ALWAYS ; auto brightness ; power saver on except 30 minutes when I wanted a brighter display at direct sunlight ; Auto Sync on BUT - almost everything set to sync off or manual, except weather, gmail (mail and contacts) and one more mail sync using the mail app. Used some internet, made some photos, listened to some music, checked mail after notifications, refreshed blinkfeed couple of times just to go through the smartphone headlines, checked battery usage and software update like 100 times lol - and there are the 2+h of screen on. I don`t use facebook, twitter etc.
And now comes the most important part and the reason I started this thread in the first place. I got like 4 hours of held awake time. In the screenshots provided you can see where these hours exactly came from. I`m absolutely sure that HTC One can manage to achieve like 3 full days of normal phone usage if it wasn`t for those sick wakelocks I`m getting (and I`m sure most of you are getting too). I know all of you have read that "7 hours screen on time" and saw the screens from some guys with 7+ hours screen on. If you pay close attention you will see that their devices worked for more than 10 hours and they got less than 10 minutes of Held Awake time. What I`m trying to figure out is how they achieved such thing.
One more thing I would like to point out if someone decides that 4 hours of held awake time are something normal for a 60h usage. Keep in mind that phone lost 1% per hour while I was asleep, which I don`t think is something normal, cause I read alot that people are loosing like 3-4% for 10 hours during the night (someone even mentioned 1%).
So basically please use this thread to discuss any wakelocks (mainly kernel related) you have and ways to get rid of them. There are alot of threads going on in xda about almost every single wakelock I`m experiencing, but I think the info is different for every phone out there. I tried almost every suggestion, but without any good result.
Here are some screenshots from Gsam Battery Monitor, BetterBatteryStats, and Battery in Setting. If you like to see a detailed info please use the dropbox link. I won`t discuss every single screenshot I made, but just want to point out two interesting things I noticed. Although facebook app is TOTALLY disabled in my phone, I still have it as a working process that is causing wakelock as you can see in screenshot 13 in dropbox folder. And also I have turned every single option in Maps to off, except first option (Google`s location service) in Settings>Location.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/k7reupon5dcy42p/a4VNWyJLGJ
P.S. I`ve heard that with 4.2.2 some things are fixed, or at least not causing so many wakelocks, but we`ll have to wait and see.
good post, i would like to know the same. I want to know some extra info:location and provider

Haven`t got any problems with play store tbh, but maps is a huge pain in the a**, as you can see in the shots provided. As I said... turned almost everything off and still can`t disable the wakelocks it is causing (as even I haven`t done anything)
man thats great.
I have seen that this phone gets good battery. Maybe it will be close to the old green screen and non smart phone battery life lol.

once you sign in to google now is when this all starts, the maps eat more battery than anything else, at least for me anyway.
I have been saying this pretty often, but that's because it works
Try greenify!
I have almost no wakelocks mainly thanks to this app

disable auto sync on those apps you greenified ...thats all greenify does , (when u put it in deep sleep u cant sync or disable sync on thos apps, apps are auto killed and put to deep sleep) there will be no need to even install it then. there is nothing magical happening. just a another way to fool users.
I've been trying to nail down the maps wakelock which appears to be NetworklocationLocator. It's been driving me mad! I disabled everything in maps but no better. Then I found another setting and I've had a huge improvement since.
Try this:
Settings > Accounts and Sync > Google > Location Settings > Location Access. Now turn off Google's location Service.
This will give you loads more battery and use less data. The downside? The weather location doesn't show current location. I just fix the weather manually to my home town. That's all I need. If I'm passing through Slough on the train I don't need the weather forecast for it! Also in maps it doesn't give you an approx fix, instead just turn on GPS like you would anyway and get the fix.
i really don't see much,if anything, wrong here. You have 5 hours and 50 minutes of awake time, less 2 hours and 10 minutes where the screen was on and another 1 hour and 5 minutes that the phone was active. So in reality you only have about 2.5 hours of time out of 60 where the phone could have been in deep sleep but wasn't.
Out of that 2.5 hours, 1 hour was google talk/hangouts, which you can simply sign out of, and 20 minutes is htc weather updates. That's leaving you with just over an hour out of 60, or about 1.5%, which is excellent.
You could probably do even a bit better by greenifying facebook and maps.
The kernel wakelocks are normal, the phone needs to spend some time keeping the OS running and communicating with the cell towers, i bet everyone will see similar msm_hsic_host usage as long as they have the cell radio running.

I keep mine logged into Google Now; I have the widget on my desktop. I have not seen any battery impact.
To OP:
I see that you are having 2 days of No Data Connection in BatteryStats, as shown below. Is it because you are connected to Wifi all the while instead of connected to the 3G mobile network? And your wifi has been turned on for more than a day. Basically, is 3G that kills battery. Perhaps you can try not to be connected to Wifi and see if the phone can last more than a day?
Thanks!
Every Android user should try Greenify:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en
It's an amazing app! With great smoothness and battery life.:good:
u can go to settings ' apps , all disable google maps . u will then see google maps not running in the backgrounfd
use a 3rd paty app for navigation if u need it
