I was playing with my friends EVO and loved how much bigger the screen was. Most people liked the 4 inch display, but im one of those guys that thinks bigger is better. The phone itself was nothing special. Seemed to be as responsive as my vibrant, but games were not as smooth and the Vibrants screen blew it away. The colors on the EVO looked faded and just didnt stand out. Just wish Samsung made it with a 4.3 Super amoled screen
But i guess i cant complain to much, its still larger than my iphone4's screen. And i can use 3G!!!!!!!
Sorry about my rambling.
I know what you mean, it would be nice if It had a bigger screen; but I doesn't matter to me since I came from a Mytouch lol. Hopefully there will be a successor of the Galaxy S family next year that will appeal all of our needs. Imagine a phone with Super AMOLED, 4.3 inch screen, FFC, 8 megapixel camera with flash, FM Radio, working GPS and to top it off Vanilla Android. One can only dream ^_^.

There have been leaks of a 4.3 inch SAMOLED successor to the Galaxy S. It's being called the Galaxy SX.

I'm good with the 4" screen. I don't need a bigger phone filling up my pockets.
On a side-note, the number of megapixels in the camera is more marketing than anything. All that tells you is how much data the camera subsystem returns to the software...it tells you nothing about the quality of the camera sensor (or the lens in the case of actual digital cameras). I've seen way too many high-megapixel devices with lousy camera sensors to place much importance on that number. A cheap camera sensor + lots of megapixels = more bad picture. Don't be fooled...look at the quality of the pictures, not the number of megapixels.
I think Samsung is coming out with a tablet... stick that your pocket

Hehe I completely agree with you, and thanks for the heads up on megapixels.
Coming from the HD2 to the vibrant I must say I like the 4 inch screen a lot better. 4.3 is just a little to much for me.

NO TY!
I refuse to get anything bigger than 4 inches. I can careless how amazing the phone is. If I can't fit in my pocket and my hands comfortably than I do not wan it.
Yeah the 4.3" on the hd2 was a bit much for me. I'm a girl so not only was it huge in my hands but huge for my pocket or anything else. I think 4 is the sweet spot

I came from the HD2, and it was too clunky.
I could use the phone fine with one hand.
my hands aren't small, but 4" is perfect and i get 720p video recording and a better GPU/Screen.
I love the 4" form factor
Lol, so many "That's what she said" jokes here.
I think Droid X would be the better 4.3" phone since it's skinnier than the Evo/HD2 which is better when holding it in the hand, but I like the 4" size. It's the perfect size imo.

I can see pixels...clearly...even l looks jagged...and I'm typing while laying on my belly, and I wear glasses but I can still see them...onmy hero it wasn't so easy to see the pixels, but then again, it might just be that I expected pixels to standout on the hero screen so it didn't bother me as much.
But still, these SAMOLED's aren't as good as they're hyped upto be...
Well, no. I lied. The screens are brilliant, but just a lil short of expectations. I.e. the fact that my white seems tan unless brightness is up past 50% (although the screen is still very bright even at 0, its just an annoying tint :[ )and it doesn't seem to me that the blacks are indeed pixels that are turned off...but then again, my eyes are silly.

yeah, i'm not sure if everyone can see it unless you really look. I had to point it out to my gf, then she noticed it.
Hah guys, you don't even have to really look for it. It's just more evident at times than other times. It's constantly, CONSTANTLY, mentioned and its a draw back of the SAMOLED displays. It's normal, just like the over saturated colors. The display is beautiful when viewing media, other times it can be an issue, or more of an annoyance for some. You don't have to look hard, you don't need a "microscope" as someone mentioned, it's there. Anyone can see it.
Some folks want to act like their Evo is perfect, some want to running their Epic is perfect. Sadly, either, are not. It's not just the Epic, it's the display. It's a fact. A known fact.

It a regular screen not a HD one..
Yeah, the "screendoor effect" is a issue that comes with Super Amoled screens.
But to be honest, I've never noticed or cared about it. Yes, if I look VERY closely I can see the pixely effect, but is it a problem? No. Do I even notice it on a daily basis? No.
The pure brilliance of the super amoled completely over weighs the downfalls in my opinion. Putting the Epic next to the Evo, the screen murders the Evos washed out LCD screen. I prefer super amoled even to the Iphone4s retina display.
But I've seen lots of people whine about how bad the pixels are on the s.amoled. And if you can't deal with it, the Epic isn't the phone for you, since its not something that can be changed easily.
I used the Voodoo screen fix, which DOES improve the level of visible pixelation, and smooths it out a great deal, but the screen is so horribly yellow at 0% that I can't use it.

So whats the big deal? Just get a different phone and your problems are fine

I hope this is a joke...
Anyway, the screendoor effect of this screen combined with the lower number of subpixels steered me away at first. The Evo is much better for sharpness/accuracy, but the novelty of OLED is hard to beat. I ordered an Epic anyway, had to have the processor.
The way i look at it, it all comes down to preference.
There is no perfect technology for these little (or larger)panels yet.
It is almost like comparing Plasmas to LED LCD's, one has advantages and disavantages over the other. (ex: screen burn in, refresh rate, or contrast ratio over brightness)
On android handsets I myself prefer AMOLED for its vibrant colors(but not so accurate), excellent blacks levels and all around even viewing angles.
Now when looking at all current technologies i would say that Apple takes the cake.
The iPhone 4 has a fantastic LCD w/ IPS screen, but the trade off is that it is only available on the iPhone, and it is only offered at a 3.5" inch size.
The pixel density on the retina display is unmatched at that size, and i would take a 4'' inch LCD w/ IPS + higher pixel density + gorilla glass over SAMOLED any day. I would recommend you walk into a store and compare the Epic with iPhone 4 side by side, and you will see what i mean.
Just my .2 cents.

Not in terms of deep blacks or contrast, AMOLED also has the EDGE on the colors.
But yeah, the iPhone screen is gorgeous and as i said before, i would take that technology over AMOLED, at least till it is a bit more refined.

Yes, true, size is better ... obviously. But colors? Sometimes the SAMOLED display looks fake. I'm over my past apple phase but yes, the display is truer in every sense of the word. Not saying you, specifically, but you all act like your Epic is perfect when fact, it has more flaws than the Evo. At times that screen is gorgeous, but through and through and in the long run I would still take the Evo display over the Epic's.
The Epic, as with the all SGS devices, is not close to the hype people give em. Not only the devices ...but the screen as well.

I chose the Epic over the Evo mainly for 3 things:
Camera, GPU and overall performance, as the Evo stinks on those 3 areas.
Other than that i would have chose the the Evo, i don't care too much for the AMOLED as long as the LCD is of decent quality and calibrated properly.
A selling point which is the hardware keyboard is almost useless to me, and it is not used 90% of the time.
I also see what you mean about colors looking fake at times, but i think some of that could be fixed if the display is calibrated properly.
I still think AMOLED has the potential to show deeper blacks than LCD's but i guess i could be wrong since i am not an expert in the subject, just a personal observation.
You see a penis?
Hey, its a fact about the screen. I just find it funny when I browse the Epic section and see people busting a nut over their phone. They act like its better than the Evo. Only category it trumps it is in the GPU category. And for the non gamers, read ; majority, that isnt important. The screen gets too much love too, which I thought was the point here. Somethig I noticed immediately and am amazed every Epic owner hasn't noticed at some point. If not week 1.
And trying to rationalize the lack of 2.2, which I've seen a lot around here, is a sad state to find yourselves in.
The latter has nothing to do with the OP or the matter at hand ... but it fits you all quite well.

Terms of a camera, if you're a serious shooter you don't use your phone ... you have a legit shooter. We know ratings don't mean much and yes, your camera is better ... marginally. Way some talk I'd think it was leagues ahead of the Evo's ... which it isn't.

UI performance all around is laggy on the Evo (i have used both side by side) and that is even running on Froyo 2.2.
Camera performance on both photo and video quality mode are a pathetic joke as well, the Camera on the Epic is much more usable.
This illustrates my point well, check it out:

I would say the Epic is a pretty good replacement for casual photo taking.
Gonna assume you didnt see the double post, which I'm ashamed of. Phone cameras are good for shooting silly pictures of anything from your baby puking on himself or your drunk friend passed out with his junk out.
If camera quality is so important to anyone they have a shooter. I have admitted, and will forever admit you have the better cam quality between the two phones. Doesn't mean anything though, to be honest, for the majority.

Hey guys been checking out the specs of GS2 and I like it..they have not confirmed which CPU its using and it maybe Samsungs or tegra.
anyways I would actually get this since atrix will take ages before hits UK BUT and i mean BUT 4.3 inc screen is putting me off. 4" is just about acceptable for me. Also that size of a phone is going to reduce the total sale of the handset, Even my friends who work in phone stores say they find it hard to sell bigger screen phone's. SGS was ok to sell because it was light and not that much bigger in total size then an iphone but they found it hard to sell phone's like Desire HD especially to female customers. I have GS1 currently.
Any one else being put off by larger phone?
It has been comfirmed that its gonna be using Exynos in some regions and Tegra2 in other regions... same for the Super Amoled Plus screen. Some regoins will not get that.
As for the size my hands are big enough.
I would say if your hands arnt that big i wouldnt buy it. Its like someone with massive hands using the Galaxy Tab for a phone.. it just wont work.

The difference in size between SGS1 and SGS2 is very small.
SGS2 is 2 mm wider, 3 mm longer but also thinner and lighter.
if only they release a 4.3 Exynos version and 4" tegra that would be sweet.. oh well gonna have to wait to see what else comes out soon.
I love big screen phones, using a desire hd and galaxy tab and tried once going back from 4.3 " to 4" and found that I very much prefer the bigger screen. Even though the battery on my dhd sucks the only reason I haven't switched phones yet is because I can't find any with the same screen size, but now that the galaxy 2 is coming I will get one to replace my dhd.
I'm actually eyeing the samsung infuse with the 4.5" screen but I don't think it will be released in europe :-(
Swyped from my sexy galaxy tab
I have a feeling this phone isn't gonna feel like a big screen phone, due to how thin and light it is. If your really worried just wait until you can paw one in the shops.
I hope atrix hits UK soon along with GS2 but in carphone warehouse, i have friends who can get 30% off

Well I own an hd2, which has a 4.3" screen. It isn't big, and I have the hands of a teenage girl. It fits nicely, and isn't much of a nuisance in my pocket either. So I dun think you should really worry about the 4.3" screen.
Also, according to the Engadget article, the bezel is very small, so you get a lot of screen without carrying a cinder block around.

Certainly the size will be offputting to some, not me though.
Interesting that the increased screen size seems to be because of the real stripe matrix in use here, doesn't bode well for Samsung adopting qHD anytime soon does it?

I personally find the retina display and qHD nothing more than just a marketing gimmick.
When I had my 800x480 Desire next to my girlfriend's iPhone 4 I couldn't see the benefit of it. Websites often fit on the screen when in desktop mode, but most things were too small to read and I had to zoom in anyway just like I would have had to do on my Desire. The rest looked pretty much the same. But who knows, maybe it's just that my eyes suck.
In the end, I'd rather have a display that is better at saving battery rather than showing me detail which my eyes can't see.
I like higher resolutions for browsing/document display, more important with a view to HDMI mirroring, qHD on a screen this size should be able to display text that is readable fully zoomed out, so I don't buy it as just a marketing gimmick. Its not a biggy in terms of this phone, but when qHD becomes more standard and more apps are customised for it then it may become an issue, but thats really a worry for future handsets.

Iphone4 has much better battery life the desire, i had one for 5 months. retina display is the best overall quality display in terms of image and text quality. I'm an Android person and since i buy my handsets off line, i pay the higher prices for phones but any one says that there is a better display then iphone4's is talking crap because they just hate apple or they cant tell difference due to their eye sight.
Any screen that uses Pentile Matrix to me sucks, I love how amoled works but pentile sucks.
With qHD using pentile well i'd rather use super amoled plus but would need to see it inhand. Pentile is what is found on amoled and super amoled like desire/SGS, the text look poor when zoomed out and fuzzy with 800x480 resolution you normally shouldnt have to zoom in to see text on a 4" but you do. For me text looked better on desire then SGS because it was 3.7" at same resolution so the pentile was squeezed together in 3.7” .
I’v had iphone 4, desire, SGS and nokia n900 in front of me at once and I would honestly say websites and text looked great on n900 and you can read without zooming (landscape mode on all). Iphone4 image quality and text is fantastic you don’t even see a pixel due to the density. On desire and SGS you can see each dot that makes up a text or icon on desktop. But videos look great on super amoled and blacks well they look great as the led are turned off.

The HDMI mirroring and a higher resolution screen is a fair point. I know that when playing video it should output it in the video's resolution (so no mirroring), but I wonder how it deals with pictures.

Yeah, it does have a better battery life. The multitasking on iOS is more limited than on Android, so there's a better guarantee that there won't be things running in the background that are eating the battery away, and the CPU is down-clocked too. Furthermore they use Li-Pol batteries, which is something that I'd like to see on other devices too. However it is well known that AMOLED screens consume significantly less energy than any other screen technology available at the moment, so if you stuck one into an iPhone the battery would be even better.
But seriously, aren't you taking all this a bit too personally? I'm no Apple hater, not sure why you made me one. Just because I had an opinion that differs from yours? Well, how mature. I was merely stating what I found out when I was playing with the two devices, didn't imply that what I said was the holy grail and the only truth.

No specs confirmed. lets start what we thnk it will have..
Super AMOLED.. sounds nice.
I would bet it gets an 8MP, hoping for maore than 1.3 front cam with all the video chat services available.
dual-core would make this thing very popular. Form factor will be a major point.
Honestly, Dell Streak innovate this and no one will come with a better idea. 5" exactly fit the pocket any extra will be too much.

5.3 might be a little too big...a friend of mine just got the 4.5" samsung infuse and it's a very nice size. 4.5-5" is the range I want.
you could technically increase the screen size of a phone to 5.3 without making the actual phone bigger in size than the streak, the side panels on either side of the streak are very big and could be utilised for extra screen realestate imo.
I will definitely jump on this one if all the specs are good. We will need dual core on this one!

exactly, who needs bezel? I mean sure, we need speakers and a mic and front cam, but all of that is already so small. Iam one for a minimalistic bezel look.
If it is good size/design I will be interested.
Sammy and TouchWiz.. not so much so, but there latest version should be nice to fiddle with for a while, something new for a change.
what resolution would they do with a .3" larger display??
960x540 probably.

I agree could be a very promising phone, to be honest I think you could get an extra inch screen size out the streak cause the bezel on each side and the top and bottom, would easily make up another inch. 6 inch screen!!!!!
But I think the streak is the perfect size, if the phone was any bigger it wouldn't fit in your pocket.
So more screen same size!!! :-D
Bezel
Streak could have that if they make the capacitive buttons on screen, and do away with the top & bottom bezel. There is a good .5" of wasted space on the streak.
I'm keeping my eye on this rumor. If it pans out, might be my streak replacement (sorry Dell...you didn't know what you had!)
Actually, the glass on the Streak is just a hair under 5.5 inches diagonal, so if they could make the display edge to edge, they could beat the Samsung without changing the form factor at all.

This could be Streak successor. It is true, that the screen can be actually bigger and device maybe even smaller then Streak, so let's wait for some pictures, specifications etc.
On the other hand, I hear somewhere that it should have querty keyboard which might be nice but then it might not be thin like Streak.
But then, think about support for this phone! Released drivers, kernels etc., so custom roms development will be much easier and there will be probably better support from apps developers (because Samsung will actually do some marketing for this tablet/phone unlike Dell).
Anyway, I probably won't have money to buy it
So long as it's not ****ty shiny plastic like every other Samsung/LG phone I'm happy.

When i look at my streak, i don´t see quality at all. the red paintjob is ****ty as hell. the paint cracks up on edges - even when you treat it with care! Dell denied my request of replacing the device or repair it...

I'm hoping for a (vertical) slide-out keyboard. Am I the only one on this planet that thinks a phone this big deserves a hardware slider keyboard????

Make it too thick. I rather like it thin. Looks almost elegant. Thicken it up and it looks clunky.
With this much screen real estate a properly designed virtual keypad should be fine.

Honestly, Dell Streak innovate this and no one will come with a better idea. 5" exactly fit the pocket any extra will be too much.

Ayeman, cousin! Ayeman
just dont make it one of those damn "foldable" screens like the keyocera echo and the new sonys. Those things look horrible..

you could technically increase the screen size of a phone to 5.3 without making the actual phone bigger in size than the streak, the side panels on either side of the streak are very big and could be utilised for extra screen realestate imo.

i quite agree with you.
ok, i'm quite satisfied with the nexus 4's camera but yesterday when I was comparing shots with my friend who owns an htc one x, i got a little bit jealous as her pictures had a wider angle lol. when she previews pics, it really occupies the entire screen. so are there any apps that can help me get wider angle pics or is it a hardware limitation? because my friend also showed me that you can change the pic dimension from 4:3 to 16:9 in htc's stock camera app, and i can't seem to find that in my camera app.
Try Camera MX. It's set to 16:9 by default

If you're talking about the screen, I agree our N4's view angle is nowhere near HOX. And there're no software could help that, it's from the design... pixel arrangement or something. Your another point, when viewing in Gallery, I also note that the portion where statusbar located is wasted, we can't use full screen. This happen to JB gallery while ICS gallery also use statusbar space. I'm not sure what the reason behind this. If you like, you can try QuickPic... it might use full screen, but I still think stock gallery is better.
edited: Pardon me for I confused "wide angle" with "view angle".... just ignore my reply then
AW: nice camera, but...
16:9 just crops the pic. You can just zoom to achieve the same. Sensors are 4:3 so it will just worsen the quality.
The other thing is the focal length. I won't go into detail as it is explained enough on the web, but the nex has a fl of 33mm in 35mm equivalent and the hox has 28mm which means it has a wider angle, thus getting more covert, but it also has drawbacks.
And btw, this is an interesting post:

Ok, it is a hardware limitation then. i know i'm just being lazy here but can you just give me the biggest drawback of wider angle cameras? just so i feel better lol
Haha, if camera's that important, should have switched, or get a hand-held on the side, I guess.
discovered another flaw today. the screen of htc one x looks much more vibrant than the nex4.
haha i still love my phone, it's blazing fast and i know it won't easily get obsolete. But I wish review sites pointed these weaknesses out.

Hox screen is over saturated. N4 is more accurate so less punchy. I have both to compare against reference images.

Heh heh... with all other things being equal, there is essentially no advantage/disadvantage to either of these two focal lengths. It simply means that when composing the exact same picture, The nexus 4 will need to be a little further away than the HTC. Conversely, your friend will need to get closer. Sometimes it is easier to do one than the other, other times not.

Lines get bent. The wider the angle the more fisheyey it gets.
But that's the extremes. I just realised poster before me essentialy said the correct thing for this exact use case.

Try photo sphere, you won't need more angle than that
Kinda weird HTC didn't go with a full 5" considering most new phones arw probably gonna have a 5" screen.

Coming from a tiny little iPhone 4, being 3.5 inches, 4.7 is already overwhelming. I also don't think I have that kind of room in my pockets since i wear Skinny Jeans. The biggest worry I've had so far with getting the One will be fitting it in my pants. xD Definitely not disappointed, and really its only .3 inches more. Not that big deal. It's still a gorgeous display. When i saw ZTE is releasing a 5.7 inch phone earlier i was wondering far people are gonna go until people are saying phones are too big. Only 1.3 inches away from the size of the Nexus 7. o.o

I agree I think it should be the full 5" but not at the expense of a bigger form factor, like more screen size w/ less bezel.
Well it may not be 5" but with the pixel density it'll be the most amazing screen. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm mad at my phone for not being the one! hmph!

I wish it was 5 inches as well... I can only hope the 4.7 inch design means its more ergonomic.
for me is best this way, better pixel, and size is great!
I think it was probably a good call, as much as I like 5 inches, I think this is the phone that iPhone users can be confident in, especially after I've owned the DNA and converted a few that I wouldn't have recommended to previous models because of their usage and what they want in a phone.
The 4.7 is a nice median size for those upgrading from smaller form factors and those used to large form factor.

I was disappointed that it was not 5". But Sense 5 looks great, the camera software looks great, the screen looks great, the design looks great, the speakers look (and sound from what I've heard on videos) great. As it stands, there is so much great about this phone, it is making me easily forgive and forget about the 0.3" missing from this phone. I expect and hope, the next One flagship will be a 5" screen..

4.7" screen is big enough for me. I barely even reach the notification bar when using the phone with one hand, yet my phone is only 4.3", what more if it's 5". Just don't put the One aside of those phones with bigger displays so you don't actually see that it's kinda small for you.

Great Heavens, listen to yourselves bleating on.
You've just seen first glimpses on one of the most beautiful phones ever built, and you're beefing about 0.3"
News flash - It's a mobile phone people, not a wall-hung TV screen - you'll never notice the difference.
If I have any dislike, it's that overpowering RSS Blink Feed, but that's easily sorted by flipping to the next screen. I just hope it doesn't swallow too much power.
Come on guys its htc you should no them by now there the only company that churns out the most models for smart phones in there range they will bring out a new model when s4 arrives my guess is HTC one XL and it will be a whopping 5.5inch screen 2 gig ram 2gz quad core 128 gig hd 1080p screen and better not forget 18 megapixel ultra camera if that's not enough eyes screen if you look up on the screen the screen moves up and down eye motion how I know all this ? Lolzz.

This. ^^^^ You wont know the difference one you get your hands on it. Also worried about BlinkFeed eating up power and battery. >.>
Luckily, one of the devs will probably figure out how to get rid of it.

I have to agree with all these guys. I had the One X, and man. All I had was an iPod before that, and I was like this thing barely fits in my hand. I got used to it, but it's the perfect size for a normal hand, not too big, not too small.
