Just installed JuiceDefender and I am now getting ALOT better battery life. I also don't think signal effects it because I am in a low signal area. One underneath on the widget is time since last unplugged, and you can see in notifications area the %'age of battery. Have been playing music, browsing internet ect, just using it moderately.
i36.tinypic.com/73ed10.png
Best record so far before getting down to 10% battery life is 25 hrs 48 minutes.
Sheeeiit. I'm lucky to get a full 12 hours on a single charge. So far. Only been through three full battery cycles so far.
2 days without problems.
Surfing, calling, WiFi, playing games, camera.
With really heavy usage like massive calling and browsing, it's was drained in one day.
Not long ago, first day low usage (FM radio, a bit od camera usage, couple of calls), lasted three days with 20% left.
nahhh ... i guess u r using a Mugen Power 3200mAh extended battery
otherwise impossible ..
wat firmware, rom, lagfix , progs are u using that gets u near to the end of the second day??
The biggest battery killer is 3G. Turn it off when you don't need it and you'll get quite nice battery life boost even without installing annoyances like Juice Defender. With 3G, my battery lasts hardly a day of light usage. On 2G, I can get two, maybe three days of light usage. Most of the time I don't need the 3G speed anyway, 2G is fast enough for a lot of things.
You might also try deleting battery stats and/or leaving the phone to turn itself off and then letting it charge until it tells you it's fully charged (you may turn it on after you've connected it to the charger, but not before that!). That way you'll calibrate the battery meter to your battery capacity properly, so it won't lie to you.
Oh yeah, and contrary to battery theory and logic, your battery WILL improve quite a bit after a week or two. Three cycles is not enough. Just be patient, give it time.
how do you switch from 3G to 2G? noob here.
Settings, Wireless, Mobile networks, Network mode - GSM only is 2G only. WCDMA is 3G.

Stock battery, G7.
You can see in my signature which ROM I am using, it's stock JG5 with no lagfix.
First couple of days since I bought it, I was very disappointed about battery life (previous HTC Touch HD lasted 2-3 days).
I came so far that I set wallpaper to black and even then it didn't last much more than one day. After some time battery life extended and it became quite better, even with Nexus live wallpaper.
3G is OFF in my case, I am mostly on WiFi when I need connection, but GPRS / EDGE are always ON.
I use 3g and battery is ok unless I play games.easily last 2 or 3 days on standby with a few short call s
1h Or 2 With games lol
I have quite bad 3G reception at home, living out of town.
At work it's ok, but I rarely need 3G so there's no problem.

Part of this depends on how your carrier acts. If I turn off 3G it means I can't use data, I can't sync etc. Sync & applications launching and background data is a bigger battery drain...multiples higher than 3G in my guess. EDITAccording to GSM arena, my 2G/3G talk time was way off, but I think their data is old. I'll remove it for now and replace it with "Up to 750 h (2G) / Up to 576 h (3G)"...it's not sooo much the network as what is going on when you might be connected to that network.
edit 2 GSM arena seems to have the most recent info, I thought they were approximating this from their test units.
Just fyi for those unaware.... Bell is a 3G only network, nationwide. You can't disable 3g on Bell and still have data.

I'm also using Juicedeffender and my battery live improved a lot. Now I can run the phone 24-30h without charging.

Hey.
Got my X10 a few days ago,
And im the only one with a power problem ?
Having to recharge it alest once a day ?
My batteri drops aprox 12 % per hour, so I usefully charge 2 times a day.
Since 1AM to now (12AM) it went from 100% - 24%. And Ive been sleeping alot, so the phone hasent been muched used either.
What kind of usage are you partaking in? In my experience most smartphones have to be charged daily.
Here's a post from Esato Forums where someone did an extensive battery drain usage test:
http://www.esato.com/board/printpost.php?post=2933402
The last day Ive been using it minimally, and Im on my second charge for the day. All my other phone last 1 day (6am-12pm) before needing charging. But my X10 needs an aditional charge at about 2-3pm..... And even then is as good as empty at 12pm....
I hope its just a small software bug, or something that could be fixed with a reset. Im starting to enjoy this phone, but there are several days a week, I will not have the time to charge it a second time..
Think Ill go for that reset, and see if that helps....
Anyone else with X10, and batteries that drain extremmely quick?
Mine dies after about 8 hours, but this is usually normal with new batteries, it should be better after a few FULL recharge cycles.

Were your previous phones smartphones, just out of curiosity.
Also, you could try to reduce how often TimeScape polls in the background for updates. That might help.
My current iPAQ 910c lasts a full day if I do nothing but the occassional phone call and SMS. However, if I do anything power intensive the battery fails, and the phone is done until it can get 2 hours or so of charge. But that's why I'm looking to replace it... definitely not normal.
I have access to every phone I want.. And Ive only been using smartphones.
(Currently as in sign.).
I dont use timescape or mediascape, so they have been disabled.
And yet the battery only last for aprox 10 hours....
I never had a phone with such a bad battery, however, Ive never had a phone with such big screen or cpu either....
You gain some, you loose some.
And to he who talked about recharging cycles to maximize battery,
this kind of batteries dosent work that way... They are allready maxed..
I've had mine for a few days now.
The battery's pretty good, I've only charged it once over about four days, so I'm pretty pleased. However, it does seem to use a lot of power if you have wifi on, even in sleep mode.
I've also had no problems with my "a" in either keyboard (Norwegian/Japanese) so far.
I'm still on 14 btw, if anyone's noticted battery dropping after they updated.

I would not say that the my battery is good. but it is ok, i haven't had it fully charged yet, since I did get git yesterday. and it did last about 10 hours or so, from 60 or 70%. with playing music, trying out some things etc. but I worked 5,5 of these hours and was in the movie theater 2 of the other hours.
anyways, I haven't really had much problems with the keyboard either, as you said. the only thing that really buggs me is the damn space button. it is too small! :/ I wen't from an X1 to the X10 no, from using HTC magic before that. But I am starting to get really used to the other keys.
I haven't installed the latest build/patch either.

Just download "spare apps" and see what apps som drain u battery
My X10 take only 6% on 3 hour on normal use
very very bad battery drain! Left mine on flight mode at 2AM with 50% battery left, before going to bed. Woke up at 11AM and the battery was dead with no usage nor cell connection!

A chellphone uses more battery when there is bad reception, because it tries to get a better reception.
Like if there is just edge, the phonei strying to get HSDPA connection instead, this drains more of the battery.
+ With android the phone leaves some of the apps running in the background.
I recommand that you get an app that can shut these down.
Like a task manager kinda..
eg.Advanced Task Manager
I hope this helps ye.
and if you go into "settings - about the phone - Battery usage" then you can see what apps that is draining the most of the battery etc.

As I wrote before, phone was in standby on flight mode: it means that NOTHING was running nor any 3G data was exchanged. I've had many Android phones (Magic, Hero, Milestone, Nexus, Legend) and in similar conditions they lost only a couple of percentage points of battery, not 50% like X10!! I do love this phone, but heavy battery drains is driving me crazy (and it's definitely not a faulty phone, since I know many many users with the same problem)

I actually think the battery is good too. I recharge every other day, which seems to work fine.
I have bluetooth and wifi off, and mostly doing manual updates for timescape. I do surf quite a bit though, and no problems with battery drain. In my experience, my X10 lasts a lot better than a Satio for example.
Strange how half of the people posting here, have very good batteries (1-2 days), and the other half have extremmely bad batteries (8-12 hours).
I doubt the ones with the bad batteries are "worse user" then the ones with the good batteries......
I'm one of those with lousy battery usage. Hardly use the phone, but drains in no time. However I've ordered 4 new batteries, so gonna test all of them and see if there's a pattern.
Grrr.. Was just setting up my contacts to Facebook.. Took around 20 minutes and drained 21% of my battery.. That's just not okay..
I just left it for 2 hours without doing anything and the battery from 90% dropped to 65%. This is not cool at all. SE we need a solution ASAP.
I'm one of those that get bad battery duration on the X10. I usually leave BT and WIFI on as I did in my N97. By observing who drains most of the battery, I get around 30% for the radio in standby and 20% for BT. The processor is only a small percentage (2%) so I don't belive that the snapdragon cpu can be blamed for bad battery duration. How is it possible that Nokias as the N97 having the same communication hw (GPS, WIFI, 3G, BT...) last for days with similar usage and battery capacity? Ok, the procesors are ony half the speed but I don't belive this makes so much difference...
I own a HTC Nexus also and has slightly better battery duration than the X10 but way far form the N97. I've roorted the phone and can change the CPU speed. It makes very little difference on battery duration if you set 400 or 300MHz instead of 1GHz.
So, it seems what makes all android devices so power hungry is the way the OS handles the communication interfaces, I belive most RF chipsets should have similar power drain and CPU's are idling most of the time. Perhaps symbian has a smarter algorithm to hanlde 3G/GSM/WiFi switching and no services polling the network when the phone is in your pocket.

So seeing i am in an area that does not have 3G I will have a problem with battery drain bcuz it will be constantly be trying to connect to HSDPA?
Now we know the reason why the battery is draining so fast on Galasy S Phones.
The simple reason the AMOLED screen.
If we compare the Droid X with the Galaxy S both with 1500mAh batterys. While the Droid X can reach up to 7:42 hours of battery life the Galaxy s can only 4:44 hours. Its sad because the marketing made us believe that AMOLED is power saving.
Here the full Test from laptopmag.com.
Did you not read this part?
"So should you steer clear of AMOLED phones if you care about endurance? Not necessarily. OLED technology uses the most power when displaying white, which is why Samsung chose a black background for the app menus on its Galaxy S phones. Since our battery test surfs web pages
, most of which have a white background, both the Galaxy devices and the Incredible were at a disadvantage. It really comes down to what you view most often on your phone."
I tested a mkv 720p video playing for 1 hour and it only used 15% battery. From that, the battery should last about 6.5 hrs.
I was reading a test on another site a week or two ago, and it claimed the Galaxy S ran a 720p vid of Avatar on loop for 7.5 hours before refusing to run the video any further as the battery had reached 20, so 4.5 hours seams a little low?

The brightness must have been set to VERY low, non ?
Not quite true that it's just the screen.
I installed a widget to turn off data connections entirely (running on 1G phone and text only) and I get about 4-5 days off a single charge now, and that's with moderate gaming/music/ebook use.
If I want to use the internet/email/whatever I just click the widget, it reconnects in 10 seconds and I am away.
I am also running the LG Optimus launcher as well, which I notice gives me much better battery life than TouchWiz/Launcher Pro/etc (although don't hit the volume button on the homescreen as it force closes)

Well, that's pretty darn good then! I doubt I've seen battery life that good on my phone....
when the phone is set on auto brightness 90% of the time is less than 50% brightness
when is above 50% brightness it is super cool! that's when you see the full effect of the SAMOLED
if you set it to say 60% or 75% brighness you will see the full bloom of the colours.
I'm pretty *****y about my phone's battery life but i have to admit that watching mkv and avi videos on my phone does not drain the battery as i would have expected. 1h30min movie drained around 20% of the battery, brightness in the perfect middle, 3G on and all that. So i think 7h++ playback is definitly doable.
Oddly enough i have the impression that leaving your phone screen on for 1h30min would probably drain close to 20% of the battery (just an impression though, might be totally wrong).
Also, 3G drains a lot of battery. I messed up with my phone and didn't have the APN configured, so no 3G, battery performance exploded, especially if u'r in an area with not so strong signal
i only notice heavy drain on battery when i'm on WiFi or 3G
like browsing the web, downloading stuff
just having WiFi on and 3G on does not consume that much battery, it is only when they are fully active.
all other tasks like watching movie, or doing offline stuff, even playing games does not consume much battery
i can drain the battery with just 4 hours of constant browsing/download stuff
but i can go on the full 24 with 1 battery pack if i do not use 3G/Wifi
on JM1 (or maybe JM2) when i had no 3G and WiFi turnerd off, bascically it would be 2% off every 8h-10h iddle time which sounds really good. However, according to the reported capable iddle time of the phone, it's not that good. People also reported less consumption in iddle.
I don't think i had too many tasks runing in the background (definitly no task killers)

I fully agree with you. I'm surpised my phone uses so little power when watching a movie, coming from winmo I'm shocked I can use this thing for a day (12-18hours) before it dies. Overall I'm quite happy with my set up as everywhere I go I have power cables. Car (check) , Office (check.USB sync) , walking (check, 2000mha solar battery charger) and Home (power adapter). I'm power paranoid due to being with Winmo since the Aero 2130 to X1i.
And yeh, 3g kills things 4hours max when on 3g.
the main thing that seems to drain the battery for me is web surfing and widgets which use the data connection. I now run a minimalist set of home screens with few widgets and have already noticed an increase in performance and battery life. 3g is pretty power hungry, but since vodafones 3g connectivity is so poor, I am often forced to use gprs through the day anyway as I'm plagued with time outs and dropping connections (if anyone from vodafone is reading, I've only been with you 3 months, and already I know I won't be staying with you come the end of my contract!)
Something's gotta be wrong with the test? I mean, look at the Captivate and Vibrant, both do about 4h 45m, but the Epic 4G does 5h 34m? Same screen, same battery, no? Yet ~50 minutes difference? Must be something other than the screen doing something...

Tachikoma_kun, what widget are you using to shut off 3G?
I came to the Galaxy from a HTC legend and I miss the HTC widget that lets you shut down mobile date completely. When I first had my galaxy on JF3 firmware, I noticed there was an option in the settings to use '2G' only. But since flashing JM8 I can't see this any longer.
Most of the widgets I've seen do some jiggery pokery with the APN configuration to achieve the data/3G shutdown, does the widget you use do the same thing?
Thanks
What's the point of having an android phone if you can't use as mobile internet as you want? I'm on unlimited data plan and my SGS lasts less than half a day on full charge with data on. Its the same thing with my old experia x10i. So I'd assume its the 3g/hsdpa connection. I had a blackberry 9700 as well. Battery life shortens significantly with 3g on.

Is it just me or is it getting old with everyone CLAIMING "best battery life" when you usually end up with the same or worse than a stock HTC kernel?
I have tried NetArchy, KingKilck, and a few others only to have my phone die in the same amount of time or even sooner. Why is this? Well what you all don't do is take into account the MANY different variables that affect battery life.
The thing that tanks my battery the fastest is the fact that I work in places with low (10-30%) signal. This kills the battery because it is constantly searching for a signal and talking with the cell tower. I am willing to bet most people that have bad battery life are in low coverage areas. I simply have learned to put my phone into airplane mode and have people text me on Google Voice as I still have a WiFi connection. WiFi uses FAR less power then the cell radio in low signal areas and you can still maintain connections if you have everything setup right.
I am NOT in any way bashing the work and effort that has been put into these kernels but with the latest HTC kernels having unlocked FPS and great battery life why would I want to even mess with a custom kernel? The only reason I could see is for overclocking. I wouldn't even run one for underclocking as I have found this to NOT be an effective way to prolong battery.
Just thought this needed to be said. What I have said here also applies to collin_ph tweak. There have been many reports of the "tweak" killing the battery even faster and I have verified this.
Mostly true, but I think it really depend on what rom, and kernel you are using, plus your signal strengh.
I've flashed very often since the day I got the phone to get maximum battery life out of it, and netarchy's usually worked for me.
I've also tried stock/default that came with Myns 2.2, and best combination that worked for me are Myn's 2.2 and Netarchy's 4.2 cfs havs smartass more agressive kernel.
there are too many kernels out there and you just have to find a working combo that works for YOU at the end of the day buddy.
Oh and I totally agree with you on this thread that it does get annoying/frustrating to see these threads, and you decide to go with it, and it turns out to be a crap.
I've tried a lot of things and never really gotten better battery life than stock, but I have gotten about the same with better performance, which is good enough for me.
The only thing that really improved battery life for me was butchering the phone - turning off background data and auto-sync and using JuiceDefender (disable mobile data when the screen is off, turn it on for 1 minute every 15 mins). But I decided I prefer using my smartphone as a smartphone.
I've come to accept it. My average battery life on weekdays is 8-10 hours. I wish it were 12-14, but I can live with it. When I stay at home on weekends, where I have Wifi and good cell signal strength, I generally get 20-30 hours with moderate use.
I live with plugging my phone in at work, and I got some of tuttoit's cheap batteries off eBay. It works well enough for me.
Anytime you flash a custom kernel you have to give your cpu time to adjust to the new stuff included (havs,bfs,cfs,voltage...etc..)your battery life gets better days after using these new kernels not immediately after flashing...
i have flashed myn's 2.2 and using setcpu to underclock when in black out mode and using titanium backup to "freeze" apps that somehow start themselves. my batt life has gotten way better than what it was on stock os and settings. ive also tried to do the *#*#4636#*#* and cant get into testing mode to change from gsm to cdma but im willing to bet its on cdma anyway.

You can use Roam Control to force roaming in those areas, if they have good signal strength with another carrier.
It's the same power usage as in good signal strength Sprint areas.
im still trying to find the reason for my battery drain, i get an ok battery life with heavy use, but even at idle it varies, the other day battery stated 80% all day long, i ran it down as best as i could and got it to read 10% at 4:30 in the morning, i set it to charge, wake up, unplug it, go back to sleep, wake up only a few hours later to see that my battery reads 60%, im sure that nothing out of the ordinary was running, i cant seem to figure it out, and i have done 3 hard resets to try and find out whats draining the battery, seeing how it varies and is seemingly random at times, im starting to think it may be the radio
I would highly suggest buying a extended battery. I have complained about the battery since day one. Got the extended battery at sprint for $54. I went 8 full hours.. I mean 8 FULL hours hard usage. I turned the screen off 3 times. Wanted to see how the life would be since I used to be on my for for aboutt 3 hours and it die.. today tturned on phone at 9. Its almost two.. 93%.. I did have my brightness all the way up yesterday and overclocked at 113 on interactive.. tomorrow ill turn everything on and run it hard again.. ill turn my airwave off also. I will get worse reception than u would at work.. -115 to -120.. I hit -125 already but I heard -120 is no service..

Same here.. but the extra thickness isn't really much a bother to me as much as charging and carrying 2 extra batteries. 6 hours now and at 75%.. I love it.. and glad I got it. Just hope when I get a different phone I can use my extending for it. Like I had tp2 and same batteries as the evo..

I know there have been many threads like this but I'm just looking for clarification as this is my first Android phone. At my house I usually get the Rogers H speed with 3/4 bars. When I browse the Internet for just an hour, 15% of the battery has been drained. Is this normal on these speeds?
I plan on leaving an IM client on 24/7 and using GPS/maps daily, so I am a bit worried because this may not last the entire day. I could switch to EDGE when I don't need it but apparently I heard that will disconnect once I start a voice call (and want to keep my IM on always). I checked my battery stats and apparently the cell standby (H) is taking most of the battery.
I am using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 with stock radio from Bell. I'm going to try to see if SetCPU makes a difference. And is there any program that can limit the HSPDA bandwidth so less battery is used? Thanks.
call *#*#4636#*#*
If you are at home or in a Wi-Fi accessible, Turn ON wifi - it uses wayyyyy less battery than the phone radio when it comes to Data....
you could get a extended battery.... Mugen Power has one for 1800 mAH and its the same size as the stock battery so no need of a bigger door.
What is your screen brightness set at? The screen is one of the top battery drain culprits. Try turning off auto-brightness, and turning the brightness down to as low as you find tolerable (depending on personal taste, and the lighting conditions in the places you use the phone the most). I recently just lowered my brightness to 35% (still plenty bright under many conditions) from 45%, and already noticing a significant improvement in batter life. Battery usage of the display dropped from over 70% to 45-50%. I haven't had the brightness set this low long enough to see how it translates to hours/days between charges, but we'll see how it goes . . ..
my battery life is retarded. probably less than yours. i swear i think i lose 1% of battery per minute of web surfing. battery is fine if you do not go on the web and have 2g on all day.
Yeah, it's pretty bad.
But that's the same for most smartphones nowadays I think...
Back to the days of game gear, the battery muncher.
6AA = 5 hours of gameplay.
I just bought some Chinese 1500maH batteries on eBay and I don't know if they're actually 1500maH. If I play with my phone a bit, I get 50% after 8 hours at work. Yikes!

Thanks.

Assuming the screen was on the entire time, 15% drain for an hour of web surfing sounds pretty good to me. The main battery eater while using the phone is the screen, so I doubt messing with your connectivity is going to drastically change your battery consumption in this usage scenario. Changing connectivity to Wifi or EDGE would probably help more during those times when your phone is off but your phone is still connected to the internet.
On a side note, I had terrible idle battery life when I was using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 on my Desire Z. When I was using my phone, battery life seemed normal. But when the phone was on standby, it seemed like my phone was running even when it was supposed to be on standby. I suspect it might have been SetCPU constantly polling in the background. I switched to Virtuous and didn't install SetCPU/didn't do any overclocking and my life improved literally threefold.
The only thing I ha te about this phone is the embarrasing battery life. So I bought an extended battery online with 3000 mAh (double the normal battery) but Im not really noticing a difference, even with a static wallpaper and few widgets and gps turned off, the battery life is still horrible. I get about 8-10 hours worth. Is the a type of power cycle I can do to increase it at all?

Lie! Man this phone rocks on battery life. With heavy usage or with medium. With heavy usage it holds on for more then a day. medium gives you atleast 2.

What battery you bought? Are you sure it has the declared 3000mAh ?
And what rom and kernel you are running?
I wouldn't be surprised if your '3000 mah' has minimally more capacity than the stock 1500 mah.
Given that many people post good battery with a wide variety of ROMs/kernels, unless your specific ROM/kernel has a problem I think many of these cases come down to one of two things:
1) usage, the phone will only get 5-7 hours of 'screen-on' usage, period. I was burning through this every day when I first got my shiny new toy, now I use it for about 1-2 hours a day and the battery lasts for 2 days on average. Some 'background' apps can be killer too, for example streaming apps that hit the data and hogs like Tunein radio (which is awesome but actually heats the phone up). In these cases you need to look at your specific usage and adjust usage or expectations.
2) Background crap. Who knows what it is, Facebook, Tango, etc. Last resort is factory reset to get rid of it (although many probably just install the same stuff they had sucking juice before...).
A third reason could be bad reception, especially with always-on data. My phone can idle for many days at my apartment where cell signal is strong and wifi is on. In an area with weak reception and the phone is trying to maintain data connection as well the radio will be sucking up tons of juice. There is no easy solution for this, I don't have much experience with it, perhaps mucking around with modems will help. Juice Defender (data connection manager) may also help it helped my battery life even with good reception but ultimately I don't even need it to go 2 days so I stopped fiddling with it (it has downsides like things are delayed up to 15 min between data connections and also a pause when you unlock phone for data to establish).
