First off this could break your speaker, do this at your own risk.
I have tested this on 2 EVO's with completely "blown" speakers, they both now sound absolutely perfect. From what i can tell, it's a lot of built up metal shavings, they weigh the speaker cone down and prevent it from making the true desired frequency.
You will need a earth magnet, or a really strong regular one will do i guess,(I used a earth mag tho)
First issue: you have to take the phone apart, from there, remove speaker,
(has been covered on youtube so go a lookin)
Now.. take the speaker, sweet diagram huh?(its late) and drop it, foam side down, from about 3 or 4 inches onto the magnet. Repeat. You will see the shavings coming off the speaker and sticking to the earth magnet.
Do it for a few minutes or until the metal shavings are all gone.
Re-assemble, click your favorite player and enjoy!!
I will try to get a tutorial on youtube soon..
u might wanna add a disclaimer as some waterhead is gonna do this and toast their evo!

Why not since you have it apart and risk damaging the speaker by screwing up the polarity of the speakers magnet just drop in a brand new speaker. They can be picked up for a few bucks.

Im on my third speaker in a year, and who want's to wait two weeks for the speaker to get from china? Did another friend's this am, zero problems. I can see where you would think this may cause a problem, but it doesn't, Sound is restored to perfect.
Just trying to pass on what has worked 3 times for me. I would prefer fixing rather than replacing, i assume others would too.
I see this all the time at my store, especially those who work outside and around machinery.
Had one guy blow 3 in two weeks before we finally sat him down and explained in detail exactly why it was doing it before he finally wised up.
just take it to sprint they will replace it for free and do it right there
Assuming you have not disassembled it and broke the seal, and you have a warranty, and you live near a store that does service work. But besides that, yeah spot on.

I work on Evos with broken screw seals. For the average customer, it means they've had it worked on before and the sticker wasn't replaced.
Thanks so much. after having the evo over a year and putting it on my work bench. I never thought about the metal shavings from screws getting in. Works as new
i'll give this a try soon.
This is a cool post but I really do see in the near future some idiots ruining their phones trying to open it up and pulling the speaker out

I don't see why it wouldn't, obviously the idea is that the earth magnet is WAY stronger than the speakers magnet allowing it to pull away the shavings, give it a shot and report back!

Just wanted to point out that unless the speaker is part of a matched pair, reversing the polarity of the magnet will not affect the sound...

Well it will change the entire dynamics of the intended design... therefore changing frequency, depth, and volume. Speakers are designed to push... not pull. If they pull, it will more or less push the sound into whatever it's housing is.

NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had my nexus for about a month now.
The speakers were fine until today, the just started a cracking sound on certain sounds.
It's really annoying and it only happens when the volume is higher then 50%.
With headphones the sound is just normal.
Is there something I can do about it? I'm not really a fan of sending my nexus back to Asus.
I had my left speaker crackling from day one. I opened the back cover and took off the net that covered the speaker. That solved my problem. You may also try that.

Took the backcover of and discovered it was my right speaker, removing the net had no effect.
Are the speakers sold apart? And are they hard to replace?
Go back to stock using Wug's toolkit. My sound was broken and not playing, I thought it was a hardware problem but I flashed back to stock. I did that and It worked. It wouldn't hurt to try it. Make sure you backup your apps using "My Backup" or "Titanium backup (root)"

I had the same problem and researched it. I even unrooted and went back to stock thinking it may have been a software problem. But to no avail. It turns out to have been a blown speaker. I couldn't locate a replacement for it. Luckily I purchased it a Staples and was able to exchange it.

Same here right speaker. I figured out that mine has a tendency to "pop" out or something and if I just push it back in I hear a click and no more crackling.
I finally worked out a solution using tape under the mesh to keep the speaker from popping out like this again and no more crackling so far.

Well if it really is perfect otherwise it might be worth it to just tape something over the broken speaker to muffle it or disconnect that speaker it until someone starts selling the speaker assembly.
Temporarily having mono sound won't be the worst thing in the world. Do you really need stereo audio? Especially when the two speakers are right next to each other on the same side lol?
That's personally what I would do in your shoes. Someone will eventually start selling N7 parts on ebay or wherever. Heh I may have to if my speaker blows out again and I can't just "pop" it back in like last time.

my speakers blew out the other day. not sure if its one or both but its unbearable to listen to. i saw the guide on ifixit. seemed easy enough so next i did a quick search and found a place they sell them. its called powerbookmedic they go outta stock real quick when they get them in so sign up for there auto email restock notification thing and as soon as they send u a email run to a comp with ur debit card. i got mine coming in a day. i plan on putting these new ones in and then getting some external speakers to use just to save from having to do this again.
When i got my One initially i thought the speakers sounded distorted but didn't pay much attention. Almost a month now, my top speaker def sounds blown. Called HTC to let them know the phone was defective and they wanted me to do a restore, so i hung up. How the hell does doing a restore can fix a blown speaker? I think im gonna have to go back to stock and follow with their crap so i can get this one replaced.

Well if you have installed any sound enhancements during ROM flashing that might be a reason. I don't think it is that unreasonable request that you try to go back to stock to test the speaker again.....? For sure if you take it in to an HTC dealer they are going to say the same thing before repairing it.

As of right now, i will return the phone but also go back to stock and test. I dont recall installing audio enhancements, im running ARHD 9.0. As i said before from day one i noticed a little distortion and progressively it got worst. If i indeed had install a sound mod, wouldnt the bottom speaker be affected too?, i mean thats my logic, i might be wrong.

Neither do I , if I feel it's faulty then the very first thing to do is factory reset. That at least would clarify no software setting involved.

Sorry about that. On the new phone go into settings and backup and reset and make sure it's making backups. If it didn't restore anything then it doesn't sound like it was set up or that it was set up but didn't make a backup.
I'm starting to suspect a blown speaker too. Problem is that both work, but the bottom speaker is clearly louder than the top one.
So either it's by design or not, it's annoying. Not gonna get it changed for now as I don't really use the speakers everyday (hopefully). And it works just fine when calling someone. So I even started it was by design, so I wouldn't become deaf even on lower volume
Bottom speaker is louder than top speaker FYI. Pretty sure this is normal. It would be nice if we had access to the balance.

Yes you guys are correct. I verified with a sound meter in close proximity to each one. The bottom speaker is approximately 2 dB louder. Not a huge difference but 2 dB difference is within the range of human hearing and when you hold the phone up to your face you can tell one speaker is a bit louder. Running 1.29.401.16R with stock kernel and no sound enhancement mods.

I had a blown top speaker as well. Bottom speaker sounded great but top speaker sounded horrible at any volume much above 25%. I got my original phone replaced under warranty and the bottom speaker is louder than the top one on both of them.
I dunno, all i did was root mine and there are times I think the speaker is crackly. There was actually one time I had to change a song because it sounded distorted. I'm honestly just waiting for some major flop before I send mine back. I gotta ask on this note, would it be best to go through AT&T or HTC?

However , it is just the power and volume rocker buttons what rattle when you shake the phone.

I'm more concerned about the Metallring around the Camera then of the Sound the Camera does. I have this Sound too, but i dont care much about it. Some Cams are doing it.
Make a Video with the flash as light or use a Heatrate Monitor where you have to put your finger onto the cam, the Ring gets really Hot after a very short Time...even the Ledflash does.
No rattle here on new tesco 16gb moto g
This is just due to production tolerances on the buttons and body. If they only accepted builds which didn't rattle a little, the price would go up. You could most definitely fix it with a little bit of paper if you want. I'd rather have a percentage of them rattle than be too tight and have button problems.
Mine does rattle a bit on the buttons, but not a huge deal. Thinking of getting the motorola grip shell that covers the buttons, maybe it gets better.
Anyway, what is annoying me a bit is the camera on/off sound. Its noticeable when you enter the camera app and even louder whem exiting. I have a friend with a moto g too and it does the same. Is it general?

Dear Community,
I've recently noticed that my S4 is draining more power than usual. After pressing the display of the device tightly against my ear, I've noticed something very curious - while the display is turned on the device seems to be making ever so slight and very faint noises. It sounds like the flow of electric current or the workings of an HDD but very silent.
I wonder if the excessive power expenditure is connected to this noise I am hearing. This is why I want to know if your devices also make a very dim sound when operating.
To find out I would like to ask you to check your device for this noise by following these steps:
1. Press the display of your S4 tightly against your ear
2. Close the other ear with your index finger
3. Turn on the device while holding it against your ear and listen for a very faint and varying sound of electrical current/interference
Questions:
1. What noise are your hearing?
2. Is the noise also present while the display is turned off (my phone still makes a very slight beeping sound)
3. Have you noticed this noise before?
I would be happy if you confirmed that your device also makes this sound when operating.
Best,
Thomas from Germany
Anyone?
I just tried it and no strange sounds emitting from my i9505.
I suspect that everyone can hear this noise but if thats not the case I need to send mine in for repair.

Mate ,
Maybe you have a very good hearing and that is why you can hear it and others do not ....how long a warranty you still have left?
If you do not have a excessive overheating , lags, reboots , hangs , screen quality issues..... i would not worry to much about it.
Try with 2 or 3 friends and check if they can hear the buzzing noise in your phone ?
Good idea. I do have performance issues that are not related to the rom.

I'm usually not to obsessed about these things but I noticed that I've been getting some lags that I can't explain and I was looking for a reason. My s4 sometimes gets very hot for no apparent reason so this might explain it. Maybe there is a hardware fault causing this noise, a broken transistor or something? It's interesting how some phones make this noise and others don't. Either way it's not optimal I guess

I know its kinda old thread, but i have picked up the same humming/buzzing noise when i put my phone display tightly on my ear in a very quiet room at 3am last night...it sounds like a very faint coil whine that some power supplies/GPU's produce....the sound is ever so slightly faint, but when i move the home screens the sound changes little bit lower or higher...you can hear it from the back cover too, near the camera, but there is no noise at the lower part, so i guess the noise is coming from the cpu/motherboard chip...
i only have the device like 4 months and it works perfectly so far, everything stock....was wondering Exxi if you exchanged your device or not, since i dont think i can persuade the carrier-seller for exchange, since everything works just fine....
