There have been a lot of posts about slow speeds and 4G issues. There's been speculation on PRI, radios and MAC addresses. My goal with this thread is to create a roll-call for everyone with problems and what they're running with. With this data, hopefully we can draw better conclusions to why we're having issues.

Welcome to Sprint, the NOT Network
or
Welcome to Sprint, The Now UNnetwork.
sprint and slow speeds/spotty service go hand in hand.
to be truthful, people have reported that an unrooted stock phone does better in the same location than a rooted phone.
but others have reported no difference.
for me its a mixed bag but the difference is minor, minor enough that you can chaulk it up to margin or error.
my speeds in my town are fracking all over the spectrum, and i mean that. it's never the same form hour to hour.
and worst of all at my work location and the surrounding 3/4 to 1 mile radius is in a Data Dead Zone, there is almost no data for some reason, but plenty of signal. and when i go into my building i start to roam, and i get faster speeds roaming than i do if i walk outside and get full bars.
That should be a new acronym, DDZ - Data Dead Zone.
now i have never taken the wife on a drive with me to test her unrooted phone at my work area, but plan to soon.
I know that I got a little bit better 3g speeds at home before rooted, and I don't know if it was because I moved to 2.2, but my 4G speeds have went down alot, and hardly work, though thats how it was before, but for a week or so it was perfect 5mb/s, but now I can't have consistant speeds, it gets down to like 1mb/s now, and doesn't even top 2mb/s.
I did a quick, unscientific, test the other day in my house comparing my 3G to 4G speeds. I sat in the exact same spot and ran the speedtest and my 4G speeds were 1.07mb and my 3G speeds were 1.03mb..........Pretty dissappointing.
I never gone past 140 kbs on download on 3g here in wisconsin with 3g.. it be nice if they come out with 4g support to cover most customers when they comeout with a phone made for 4g.. i tried the whole list of cities and at different times.. top speed of 140 kbs.

It very well could be degregated performance in NYC. I know awhile back ATT was telling their customers to use wifi whenever possible because of the network congestion:
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/mobile/05/25/att.free.wifi.nyc.cnet/index.html
I live in the chicago suburbs and around my house 4G and 3G speeds are terrible. However, if I venture about 5 minutes out, towards the elgin area specifically, I have seen speeds of up to 11mbs. Its just a little dissapointing that I appear to be on some crummy fringe area, but if I drive a couple miles out my speeds improve SO much.

I have read all of the PRI threads and really don't know if that is a cause for slow speeds or not. The problem I have is that I can do a speed test 5 times in a row and get 5 completely different results. A couple of nights ago I did about 6 speed tests over a 1 hour period. they ranged from 296 kbps down to 2198 kbps down (all on 3g). I just think that Sprints network, at least where I live is pretty unreliable.
For the record my specs are.

Lately there have been a lot of people reporting that they have 4g in areas not listed in sprints 4g coverage map. So i want all of you people who do get 4g signal to put what city and state you get 4g in, along with the average speed you get, that way all someone could stumble across this thread see the list and say, "oh man theres 4g there! yay!"
So let me start
I get 3 bars of 4g signal in Anaheim, CA around the knotts berry farm area.
And then ill take yours guys info and put here
4g Coverage
Anaheim, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
San Jose, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
Nampa/Boise, ID (Full speed at sprint store, 2.5 down / 1 up everywhere else)
Lexington, NC (5 down/2.5 up)
Richmond, VA (5 down/2 up)
San Jose, ca full bars 5/2.5
richmond, va
5/2
I get 4G in Nampa/Boise, ID. I get 4G speeds when I'm in the sprint store, other than that, I get 4G speeds that are half the speed of 3G speeds, and the 3G speeds are getting pretty damn close to being dial up speed around here. It really is quite ****ty.
How are you guys getting above 1mbps on upload? I thought Sprint/Clear had capped the upload at 1mbps.

I have no idea about the speeds. I was driving around the whole city(san jose, ca) with my applefanboy friend and i wanted to show off the phone and when he turned the 4g on it got signal. We opened the speedtester and bammm he stop talking about apple stuff.
I thought san jose was on the list for cities coming soon, but this was a fast launch unless is only testing phase.
Lexington,nc 5/2.5
They launched 4G here in Syracuse, NY almost a month ago.
I can't test the speed right now because I live right in the middle of a gap in the 4G coverage, but when out in areas with coverage I was getting speeds just a little faster than 3G in the same area.
Coverage here is horrible, even in the better 4G spots shown on the map I get a poor signal. I've never been able to get over one bar, and that one bar usually drops fast.
EDIT: Was in a 4G area today with a decent signal and got 1.99 Mbps down, and 0.8 Mbps up.
Nashville, TN and several of the surrounding areas.
First off, stop using the speedtest.net app to test speed, it is not accurate! Either use the flash speedtest.net or the HTML testmy.net if you want an accurate reading.
Second.
Denver - Broomfield around Interlocken and at Invesco field and a good 5 mile stretch down the highway.
All of downtown Seattle has excellent 4G
Tacoma, WA has great 4G
Bremerton, WA and Silverdale, WA has great 4G
I get 4G on the Northeast Corridor (Amtrak from NYC to Philly) from Elizabeth to Rahway, NJ.

LOL, I saw that there was 4G during a Rockies game a month ago. My 3G stopped working, (I think the network was overtaxed during the game), and I happened to try 4G and was able to continue using data. Great speed too. Never got around to testing it though...
Also, Tri-Cities (Pasco, WA) has 4G and its official too.
Winston Salem, NC 4./1
Greensboro, NC 3.5/1
High Point, NC 4/1.5
King of Prussia, PA - 3/1.5
Philadelphia, PA - 4/1.7
Where in Richmond are you getting 5 down? I can only get about 3 down max downtown and in the Fan.
I got pretty decent coverage in Chicago.

I've been getting 2-3 Mbps tops in Boston, a supposed HSPA+ city, though I haven't tried all over town or in Cambridge. But I was in Chicago last week and topped 7 Mbps in one location. So I just think it varies widely with exact location. Probably all it takes to call a city HSPA+ is a few cell towers with peak theoretical speeds of 14 or 21 Mbps or whatever.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well, seems it' still not quite up to snuff in Houston. Best I've been able to get is 3.94 Mbps down (I saw that kind of speed on my 3g Vibrant).
After some phone calls and other investigations, I am thinking that their "4g" network isn't as all encompassing as the coverage map shows.
Accessing the testing menu, I can see that I am on either UMTS or HSDPA network, both of which are 3g (according to Tmo tech support).
So, just to make sure my phone wasn't the problem (was already refreshed on the network a couple of time by tech support and even did a master reset) I went down to a Tmo store that was shown to be in 4G coverage area and checked out a MT4G and G2. Neither of them showed connection to HSPA ot HSPA+.
So, dissappointing for sure, but I guess the phone was free (replaced my Vibrant) I can't complain.

Contacted tech support this morning and they are supposed to check out the problem in a wide area.
My wife gets her MT4G Wednesday, so I will have another phone to go by. Obviously if hers sees the HSPA/HSPA+ network and mine doesn't I'll know it's my phone or a setting of some sort within.
I guess it just bugs me since the MYT4G and G2 I checked out also display 3g network connectivity in what is supposed to be 4g coverage area.
I'm in Salt Lake City where the coverage map shows 4g. I have gotten 3 to 4 Mbps speeds before 5 am. However, during the day, I'm getting around 2 mbps or less. My big problem is the coverage. When it drops from H to E, the browsing locks up. It:s like I get 3/4G or nothing. Has anyone else experienced this?
My AT&T Captivate runs almost as fast on 3G networks during the day, but it even gets just under 200 kbps on E. What gives? One of my employees has the MT4G also and find that E doesn't work either.

Going through the build.prop files, I notice in all of the CM builds, that the throughput settings seem to be inaccurate. I can only assume this is because all phones they build for aren't HSPA+ compatible. I'm no expert (as wikipedia is my source here) but according to T-Mobile's HSPA+ specs, we're to achieve up to 21mbps download and 5.7mbps upload on their network. In the build.prop files for the MT4G, our ro.ril.hsdpa.category is set to 8. According to Wikipedia, this category should be set to 14 and at a minimum 10. I say 10 because i'm quite unsure of the MT4G's radio capability and documents I've read seem to suggest the G2 (similar to MT4G) is only capable of max download speeds of 14.4 mbps (which is category 10). However, setting category 14 doesn't seem to impede download speeds, so I set mine to that- just in case. On the flip-side, the ro.ril.hsupa.category is set at 6, which seems to be correct in supporting our max theoretical upload speeds of 5.7mbps. There are other factors that have to be considered as well, such as how many users are connected to a tower at any given time. HSDPA/HSPA+ is a shared data-link, much like your home internet connections. At home, I average between 2 and 4mbps downloads. There are times (usually REALLY late at night or early in the morning) where i've seen 8mbps and once 11mbps download speeds. I'm not quite sure I would have seen these speeds with my ro.ril.hsdpa.category set to 8 as it is in CM because that would indicate a cap in download speeds of 7.2mbps.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and none of this means anything. Just food for thought.

Just so you know just BC the tower is within 30 feet doesn't mean its faster. Actually it will probably be slower; think of the tower as just the placeholder the signal is focused outward and doesn't beam down beside it BC usually nothing is right under it. When I had Verizon there was a tower on my roof at my apt but I had no signal directly below.

its because they are systematically replacing all the towers and infrastructure with the new upgraded equipment so that they can announce an industry first 1gb/s speed on feb7!!!
4G on Sprint anyway is so damn overated.

Sometimes it's not about population but what's cheapest and easiest.
I mean if it truly came down to population then NYC would be the first for every tower upgrade by all carriers.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, though there was one Friday a few weeks ago that I pulled over a Mbit per second and was able to stream something on Netflix in the afternoon. Was hoping they had finally fixed the tower by work but nope, Monday it was back in the dumps. If it's still like this when my contract comes up I'm going to have to consider changing carriers.
I am in St Louis and usually i average about 600 kbps but yesterday and today I am averaging about 1600 kbps and last nite I was averaging around 2200 kbps. I have never had speeds that high and I have been with sprint for over 9 years in St Louis. This is all on 3G, I cannot get 4g coverage at my house.
Where I work I usually roam in the office but now I am getting 1500 kbps on sprint.
Hopefully it will last.
in a small town nearby i use town because it isnt a city because its part of the city i live in but its a town. Yea one of those places..
Well anyways where I live i seem to be pretty far from a tower. im like a mile or something from it and i get around .3 m down. and when im in the other town which i can get within hundreds of feet of the tower i get 1.8 down an down the city has only 22k people so for me its the distance from the tower. and not many of them here.
I recently updated to stock GB and decided to try some speed tests in different parts of the the city today. This is my first experience with EI22 or anything not based on EC05 for that matter.
Anyway, in my neighborhood (Morningside Heights), data speeds have always been terrible, but I was able to pull pretty decent 3G speeds in most of the rest of Manhattan with Froyo. Today, I drove through Manhattan, starting as far south as Union Square, and worked my way all the way back up the west side. In short, 3G speeds were the worst I've seen them. Areas were I was able to pull in upwards of 0.8 Mbps with Froyo, I could barely crack 0.3 Mbps with Gingerbread. The best I got was about 8th Ave and 14th, were my downstream was 0.5 and upstream of 0.73. Everywhere else hovered between 0.12 and 0.3 down and 0.2 to 0.63 up. In every case, as per usual, 3G upstream was faster than down.
I have no idea if this is a Gingerbread issue, the fault of my Epic or if Sprint's 3G network is just that much worse now than it was a few weeks back, but this is far and away the worst I've seen it since becoming a Sprint customer.
I only ran a handful of 4G speed tests, and those had downstream speeds between 7.33 Mbps and 8.74 Mbs, and meager upstream between 1.37 Mbps and 1.46 Mbps.
I blame apple
They copyrighted 3g and decided to to sue sprint
Sprint was then forced to comply to apples demands and turn of 3g
What you get is now only 2g unless u have an iphone

Ummm.. I really hope you don't believe that. That really is a ridiculous claim..

I don't think it's gingerbread. I believe it has to do with all the new iphone subscriber on the network. I've noticed my speeds got crappy ever since the iphones release. I even had my sister asking me to take a look at her Evo because she said it takes forever to load on 3g. Only remedy so far is turning on 4g if you have coverage lol

I agree. Still on Froyo , here are my 7 AM Sat results (Upper East Side, 90's):
3G:
0.34 - 0.7 MBPS down, 0.6 - 0.7 MBPS up, PING: 87-122 MS
- most ping times were under 100 MS
- d/l speeds are inconsistent but generally are closer to the lower end of the range number rather than the higher end
4G:
2.95 - 8.77 MBPS down, 1.47 - 1.50 MBPS up, PING: 119-126 MS
- ping times are consistent, although sucky
- download speeds are very insconsistent
Conclusions:
- it is NOT Gingerbread.
- it is NOT the iPhone launch either - these speeds are similar to what I had since August, way prior to the iPhone launch.
- Sprint's 3G: you get what you pay for. Wifey's completely stock Droid 2 Global (VZW) pulls 1.5 - 2 MBPS down consistently, with consistent PINGs in the 70 MS range.
- Sprint's 4G: great if you can find it, but spotty coverage and battery life drain limit its usefulness. Would take consistent 1.5 MBPS+ 3G with in-building penetration over current version of WiMax any day of the week.
Sprint 3G has always sucked in NYC

Not when I had my Hero. Sprints 3g was pulling upto 5mbps
But ever since I got the epic, my 3g has been horrible. 4g has ALWAYS been great (I keep it running when I'm in ny) but 3g took a big hit.
I came down to florida the day of the snowstorm so I haven't really gotten to see the speeds get worst in nyc, but down here on 3g I'm getting 1.8 mbps (atleast on eh06... since I've upgraded to ei22, I've noticed things taking a bit longer to load but ima blame that on my phone still getting used to the modem.) I haven't ran speedtests with ei22 yet. Ima wait a couple of days.
I expect when I come home, for 3g to be even more atrocious than it was.
Trust me bro...keep 4g on in the city. It stays connected along the entire 6 train line in the bronx and all throughout manhattan. I haven't gone to brooklyn in a while but I imagine 4g is upto par there too.
I blame the 3g problems on all of the inevitable iphone 4/s owners in the city...
I suspect its all the iphone users in nyc

As I said in my original post, I've pulled considerably better 3G speeds in other parts of the city before. For instance, in NoHo, I could consistently pull around .75Mbps. That same area now won't let me crack .3Mbps.
htc phones get better signal than sammy phones
i forgot about this phones but my epic touch uses a 5 year old antenna or something like that while the evo 3d uses a relativity new one hence better signal and speeds

I've noticed a few of the more honest Sprint reps I've spoken with have said that the HTC devices have considerably better antennae than the Epic. Supposedly the HTCs are crappier in every other respect, though. I still hold that Sprint's 3G in NYC is worse than it was a month or so ago.
Things down started slowinglast Jul IIRC. If you think Sprint 3G is bad in NYC, try Suffolk County, Long Island... unless you're next to a tower, it's often slower than thick molasses, dying snails and glaciers.
Now off Froyo EC05 and onto GB EI22 rom, the measured speeds are (drumroll!) exactly the same. As for 4g connectivity, it has dead zones in various places i.e. Upper West Side. I don't know how people manage to keep 4g on all the time and not run out of juice - extended or extra batteries?
Lol at the guy who said it was apple...

I live on deer park avenue and work on 110, if it weren't for optimum wifi, I'm pretty sure I'd have killed myself by now (that's the only positive thing you'll ever hear me say about cablevision, lol)

In my neighborhood, I can't stay connected to 4G at all. Usually, I can get on and I'm then dropped within a couple of minutes. If I'm driving around Manhattan, I can stay on 4G for a chunk of the time, but usually get dropped in a few places. 4G is nice when it works: the speeds typically range anywhere from 5Mbps to 8Mbps in the areas of Manhattan I've used it. That being said, it's tendency to just drift in and out make it pretty hard to deal with. There are also a few total Sprint dead zones in areas where dead zones should exist - for example, around 34th and Park, there's almost zero coverage.
sitting by a window on 110th and Broadway, ran the speed test app 3 times to check 3G speeds:
Ping 286 - Download 0.12 Mbps - Upload 0.29 Mbps
Ping 362 - Download 0.01 Mbps - Upload 0.23 Mbps
Ping 356 - Download 0.03 Mbps - Upload 0.27 Mbps
remind me why I'm paying for this
I have been seeing some pretty crappy speeds myself (not in New York though).
Nothing nearly as slow as what I had been seeing for awhile. You should also take into consideration that Sprint has been rolling out the GB update OTA so that could be what's causing the abysmal speeds lately?
I noticed a huge difference in 3G today. Could be because the majority of the people got the update? Just a thought. But speeds are blazing fast for me on 3G today and it hasn't been since GB rolled out.
