So what is creating the lag on the magic?is it a hardware limitation or is the android os to blame, and why it will run ok for few days and then start to slow down?i am out on the road for work alot and i do realy use my magic alot for surfing the net ,watching movies, and so on and it get frustating when the softkeyboard start to slow down like now wile im writing in this post.
If is software related i hope google will resolve the problems soon at the next update,i realy hate when the browser does not scroll up or down the page smootly to.
You have to reboot the phone once a day. Its like this for almost all smart phones. I had too do it to my Iphone twice a day sometimes. There is also a program in the market called taskiller, I suggest getting it. The program can free up 20m in 2 sec.
What im asking is the reason why the lag appear.bad coding of android os?apps r not build properly?
Hard to tell, I noticed that some apps are bad, when I cleaned up some of my market apps and removed them, I stopped getting the slow down near as often. I take it some of those apps had memory leaks. I actually sped up when I removed task killer, I'm not making accusations, but the version I was running might have had problems of it's own.
I will take exception to the idea that phones have to be rebooted all the time, they shouldn't. WinMo I had to reboot twice a day at times, but the Iphone...I rarely rebooted, and I would go six months or more without a blackberry reboot (usually only to flash to a new rom).
Hard to say without some really good diagnostic time whether the memory is leaking from apps or core OS processes. If it was obvious, the android developers would have already fixed them (and some probably are in upcoming revisions). That being said, Android will get there with a little time. I wouldn't go back to the iphone unless there is a major change in the way it operates, and I would only switch to blackberry if they drastically improved their Storm. The openness of Android and above all the notifications system on Android trump its rough edges. Now if only copy and paste.........
Ho well i hope google is going to sort it out soon.
My friend just upgrade to the new iphone and i must say that is very quick, speedyyyyyyy.
Is android os full accesible by the devs or there are part of it that only google have right to?

Don't worry the new iphone has the same issue, has to reboot every day or so once it's all loaded up with apps and cache. My brother has the new one and it's on par with the Magic for speed but you have to remember it's only a "one show pony".

Its on par?? By the look of it is not near up to the speed of the iphone.
So are parts of the os that devs on this forum cannot acces?

Which magic are you using? My Rogers 32A magic is at least as fast if not faster in some things than the 3GS. I had both here testing and they are equal in alot of things. But the Magic can multitask where the iphone can run one app.

I see a lot of phones through the course of a day and i can tell you ALL smartphones eventualy end up with lag. The more they can do, the more likely they will slow down. Even your laptop, desktop, car, and body will slow down with time and use. We demand more features, power, battery life, colors, channels, options, etc..... We had none of this twenty years ago. Does anyone remember their Commadore 64? Keep your perspective. 99% of the tech we use today came about in the last 35 to 45 years. We get angry because we have to wait 3 seconds to find out our latitude and longitude because were looking for a starbucks. If you want it to run better, turn it off and do without it for a day. You'll not complain about minimal lag for a few days after that.
Sorry for the rant folks....

You're so right Serious!
Yes i do agree to.
I wanted only to know what would cause the lag, thats all.
Understandable. We would not have gotten this far if we had never tried to work out the details and make them better. I suppose it's a double edged sword. By the time we perfect one device we are off to another. Until we do though, the daily reboot is our best freind. Hope I did not sound like I was comming down on you.

I think this is a valid and important question. I just bought the tmobile mt3g and the keyboard lag, when web browsing, is the single most annoying issue. Is this a hardware limitation, or something that we can expect to improve as the software is refined?
I've been googling around trying to find an answer to this but it seems like most threads are concerned with "features lists" rather than "user experience". It makes sense. It's a lot harder to quantify the latter, but we still should try, especially since this is the axis where the open platform model might be inferior to the proprietary one (apple/palm). I mean, I'm pretty sure android is going to have a better feature list within the year (if not already). The real unknown is whether it will be a fast, integrated, polished user experience.
Maybe one of the gurus on this list can given an enlightened opinion. My guess is that it's mostly a software issue. The keyboard works a lot faster in SMS or gmail than in the browser. There really isn't an excuse for this other than lazy software. All the javascript is taking up cycles that the keyboard needs to be snappy perhaps?
can someone answer my question please:
Is android os full accesible by the devs or there are part of it that only google have right to?
If I am not mistaken, the max CPU frequncy is set to 385 MHz instead of the 528 it is capable of on a stock rom. Underclocking can save battery life, and that is one on the major complaints I see about the newer phones. More speed means less battery life. If you want to get the most out of the MyTouch your best bet is to root the phone and set your max speed to the 528 level using SetCPU or a similar program. The phone is very capable of doing more than what you see out of the box. You just need to work on it. We are here because we are not the general public that likes to just "leave it as it is". Root it, get one of Cyanogen's (my favorite) or some one elses roms, and SetCPU. you will be impressed.
I got root and runing cyan roms.
It seems that many people dont get the question that im asking. Maybe my english is not great and seems that anyone is trying to jump in the same vagon defending android without realise i m not trashing it .
Some of the answers i do think are unrelated to my question ,so maybe is me that is not clear.?
So you have lag on Cyanogen's rom? Which rom is it? Do you have a lot of apps installed? Have you tried SetCPU? I have a two MyTouch running Cyan's 4.0.1, SetCPU has me running at 528 max, 328 min. i do not have any lag on my keyboard or any of my apps. I reboot once a day but have never realy needed to. Post what you have going and I will do my best to help you out.
Sorry. You are right. I did forget about the original question. "why does lag apear in the first place". I don't have a lot of specifics for you, but I can tell you that phones are manufactured for the "general" public. Build it, get it out, and don't support it properly is what I see. I work for a U.S. service provider and I spend my day trying to get people to speak up. I do what I can to help everyone but I aint no jeanus if you get my meaning. If we demand more we will get more. And yet people keep on buying devices mearly because they are the "in" thing. Remember the rule of "supply and demand"? If we buy it and dont ask questions, they will take the money and run. Damn I am being a radical. It is true though. If we don't give them hell, they will just keep doing the same thing.

So, I got the vibrant, and overall I like it because its much more responsive than both my G1 and MyTouch, but kind of have the following thoughts.
1. I feel having an LED has to be a big mistake/oversight. I cant imagine the LED would have much added cost for samsung nor be very big/require much space. Yet would have a GREAT improvment on the user experience. I hate not being able to glance at my phone and see what happened. Plus, it's alot less battery than having to turn on the screen. There are some hacks - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725458 - being done to compensate, but none are 'great' solutions, although clever.
2. Battery life - for an AMOLED screen, I'm surprised my battery drains as fast as it does. It lasts me 3/4 of a day more or less. I do have a few things installed, and do use the feed widgt for facebook etc, and have gmail and work email synced. I think it still doesnt last as long as it should. I'm considering removing the facebook widget and adjusting sync times to get more battery back, but still feels lacking.
P.S. : Isnt there some sort of App that can help me identify which apps are using the most battery/CPU time?
3. Calendar Notification - This is something I cant understand. I have worke mail synced to my phone, as well as my calendar for it synced. I get long vibrations and sound (if my phone isnt on vibrate), but there is no way I can find to adjust the notification to be less annoying. I know other users have noticed the same issue
4. Bloatware - I dont mind the fact that they install alot of apps on the phone that other users may find interesting, but I really feel they should make it easier to remove them. I shouldnt have to go through extra effort to get the bloatware removed.
5. Camera App - its a nice app, but I dont like how after taking a picture it does not switch back to camera... you have to hit the back button.
6. Power on button - You already have to do a slide to unlock... why on earth is the power button so small and obtrusive? I feel this is a bit quircky.
7. Proximity sensor - I dont know about you guys, but it took me a while to figure out why, when I am on the phone, the screen kept lighting up on and off. I *think* I figured out that the proximity sensor right next to the ear piece detects if your head is near the phone, and if it is away from it, it will light up the phone. I find this rather annoying, maybe I hold the phone awkwardly, but several times it has lit up while talking and I've accidentally muted etc.
So ya, </rant>
Overall, the phone is nice and a well needed improvement over my previous phone, but I feel there were just a few simple things that samsung could of done to make it a solid release.
What do others think?

I'm glad you felt the need to be a complete jerk in your response. Very smooth and professional.
FYI the rant was partially so others (who may want to get the phone) know what issues and downsides I've personally experienced, and partially to see if anyone has any suggestions on ways to imrpove/fix some of my issues.
If you have nothing smart to say next time, it may be best to just keep it to yourself.

this posting was worth it allow for this fine joke of yours...nice one do you do stand up?
@temperbad - the reason people on this forum will harass you about your post is mainly this:
xda-developers is just that - a DEVELOPERS forum. Most people who want to complain about devices go to forums for those devices that address general discussion. This forum caters to people who "mod" their devices. While many new-comers do come to this forum and are welcomed - it is appreciated if they stay on topics related to app modification/generation, themeing, developing and modifying ROMS and such.
So, while many do get on here and post about other crap - it is only tolerated by those that seriously want to use these forums for the intended purposes.
Your rant about this device will most likely only be heard by those who own the device out of necessity or desire - AND, by people who are already committed to owning the device. THEY DON'T CARE about hearing someone complain about a device they are already committed to!
So, in the future please make these kinds of posts on forums on which people discuss more general topics or cater to the device "generally" instead of on a forum that is dedicated to DEVELOPMENT and MODIFICATION.
I am not attempting to be harsh - however, hopefully, others will read this and will not post topics that are not related to this forum.
MOST OF THE REALLY GREAT DEVELOPERS ARE RAN OFF from Development forums because of all the off topic comments. We hope that one day this will stop.... But, I am beginning to feel like all hope is lost...
@shaneaus - yes, I understand that, but I did post in the GENERAL section. Also, I understand this is a developer forum. I'm a developer myself and have trolled the forums for a few years, and there are some development solutions to the problems I mentioned (like notifications) etc...
Thanks for the thoughtful response though.
Every phone has it's shortcomings
Return it or whine about it
At this point I would suggest you move on
wait for the froyo update and some of your issues may be resolved.

Are you people serious? You don't know how a Proximity sensor works on these phones? "Bloatware" as if T-Mobile hid it from you and has SO much of it on this phone? "Photo review, a feature that YOU CAN TURN OFF IN THE CAMERA SETTINGS?!" "PS isn't there an app that will tell me what is using the most battery" - Wow. Just wow. And you call this a "rant"? Maybe you should consult the owners manual before creating threads like this.
You knew or should've known that there is no LED Notification light on this phone. If you're trying to tell me that the battery life is worse on this phone than the G1 you're doing something seriously wrong.

Yes yes.. So true... I stand by my first post with pride.....
Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.
Plenty of lag and memory fixes available.

yeah theres a decent amount of lag out of the box, but TONS of fixes available
About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.

Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.
Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.
It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.
I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.
Hi, i am a SGS owner and i'm wondering about upgrading to the SGSII mainly for gps and flash.
Could you please share some gps test screens and some photos? If there is an old sgs owner i do like to know its thought too
I am really interested about battery life too, but as far as i read it is the same as SGS

GPS and battery life are both better than my captivate
Both a lot better...battery life is better in my case too. Also, no lag....
After using the SGSII for a week or two you forget why you loved the SGS so much

GPS seem to lock on speedily in open spaces. The chip is CSR SiRFstarIV, according to PDAdb.NET
I tested the gps for the first time today while driving.
No track to show for it at this moment, but it kept a steady lock the whole way, 30km,
no weird jumping around, showed me in the right lane of the highway,
kept close, about 5/6m distance.
I've tried this same stretch of road a dozen times with my sgs, but it never
even came close to showing me where I actually was, couldn't keep a lock, always jumping around,
sometimes showing me as far as 2 km away, so I'm very happy with the improved gps in the sgs2.
Battery with intensive use will last about 6 hours for me, moderate use 12 to 14h and light use 30 to 36h. But battery life seems different for everyone.
From what I've encountered with flash, it plays smoothly, only had some slight hiccups with 1080p youtube files on heavy sites.
The only minor regret I could think of right now after moving from the sgs1 is that my favorite custom roms and themes aren't available yet.
So I have spent hours going through the forums and reading on whats going on but I'm completely new to this and am slightly at a loss (ok maybe a bit more than slightly) so I'm going to try to explain my issues with this phone and what i hope to achieve so please bear with me
1) need to sim unlock im currently out of the country and want to use a different carriers sim card with my phone (i cant call tmobile and ask for the pin) how do i go about accomplishing this
2) I want to root my phone and get a new UI i checked the screen and know i have the good one with the better resolution but i dont know how to get the terminal emulator (in order to check my eMMC) onto my phone (outside the country = no service. it said it downloaded but it would be sent to my phone. well that does me no good -_-)
2A)Reasons for wanting a new UI
A1) Battery Life (stand by battery life is long, using any app = no battery life)
A2) Lag and FC's (I get major lag and many FC's when texting, using the camera, opening and using apps, on the lock screen, in gallery, and when rotating phone... pretty much all the time)
A3) Privacy Issues (I find things like the Carrier IQ incident, SOPA, and NDAA very disturbing i love my privacy like i assume most people do to)
A4) cant get rid of apps like the FB app i just use the browser for things like that i feel safer than having an app that has access to my to my phone (see the privacy thing i was talking about)
2B) the things i use my phone for
B1) Texting (heavy usage*)
B2) Google Maps (on the road a lot)
B3) Camera (photography student so i really like to take pictures)
B4) Youtube and Netflix (i swear its saved my life)
B5) Games (come one we all play games on our phones especially when we have time to kill i don't go crazy though its usually free simple games to keep me occupied
B6)Keeping my self organized (dates, events, to do list of the day)
3)I want to know if having a 4GB micro SD card is going to be a problem if i root my phone (i plan on upgrading because i also want to use the music player but at the moment i don't have a higher capacity card) and if their is already an option out their for me but of course being a photography student i really want to get ICS for the phone since i saw how the new camera system was suposed to be (on the nexus) and that thing iisss seeexxyyy ;] i know you guys kno what im talking about
4)I really hope some one can guide me or at least point me in the right direction honestly any help or advice is greatly appreciated and really welcomed. I know I'm no expert in this and every time i go through the threads all that happens is a lot of with some from frustration but I'm trying and honestly want to do this i think its really amazing being able to work with technology on this level and would have never imagined i could go so in depth with my phone.
Thanks in advanced for any help and sorry for not being able to make this any shorter i really tried.... oh and for the love of god will some one tell me where the "Thanks" button is i don't see it and every one wants an thanks on this forum hehe
(p.s sorry if i posted this in the wrong thread i wasn't sure if in the Q&A or the general discussion thread but i chose Q&A since I'm asking for advice)
Ok 1) sim unlock can be achieved through gfree which also permaroots you.
2) there are many different uis such As sense aosp and miui. Aosp is the simplest and fastest and has the best battery life out of most usually.
3) 4gb should be enough although I use a 16gb because I keep multiple roms and over 10gb of music on it and the aosp ics rom doesn't have camera yet but it's gettin there!
Hope I helped! And just be careful and read before posting that's all the advice I got, pm me if you need me.
