[Q] How can I set an mp3 as my sms message tone? - Streak 5 General

Many years ago I had a Samsung omnia which had windows mobile 5.1
When I went to set my sms tone, it would only allow me to set the default tones.
Somebody told me to change the format to .wav and put it in a certain folder and you could then select the tone of your choice.
Is there any similar way to do this on the streak?

go into messaging app settings and change it from there. i recommend handcent sms. best text app out there.

TO enable the Streak to find your .mp3 etc to use as notification, or alarms or ringtones, you need to create a folder on your SDcard.
For Alarms, create one called Alarms
For Notifications (sms tones etc), create one called Notifications
For RIngtones, create one called.... you get the idea
once they are in those folders, you can see them and use them from the normal place you change your settings

Thank you grizlore. It's a good program too...

Using my wma files as 'Message recieved tone'

Ive managed to set my audio files as ringtones but is it possible to set them as a SMS recieved tone?
yip, put the file in the map windows on your mobilephone and choose this file as your receive email sound. PS: i didnt test it with wma but it must work!!!
I'm almost sure its the New sms option in the sounds and notifications , not the new e-mail one.
in fact you can choose sound for many notifications in settings/phone/other settings/ and chose email, sms, even msn messenger notification sound.
when i test it i can only choose my alien.wma
when i change the phonering in notifications
it's not present on the list if i choose sms recieve or mail recieve
You have to copy the file in the \Windows directory and il will then appear listed for SMS too
As far as I know (on XDA I), you can only assign wma files to ringtones. SMS tones need to be wav.
It seems they use different audio engines.
i've tried to copy it to windows and windows/rings
and non of those locations matter to the list of my
sms notification or any other non phone edition spc
notification for that matter
i tried that too, and i conclude that it's not possible to set wma files to sms notification... it has to be wav...
regards
can we make the tone cut of with a push of a button.. my tone goes 4 ages and i cannot cut it of when im reading my msgs!

[Question] own sms & email tones

Some how when i made a folder on my sd called Ringtones,
It identified it and now i could choose my own made ringtone for my calls.
Great!
But! how can i do this for sms and email alerts?
Is there a way to use my own tones for that too?
Go into Menu -> Settings in the corresponding app. You can also set different alerts on a per calendar basis.

create folders named alarms and notifications on your memory card. Tones within these folders will be picked up when setting the tones for your alarm clock and sms / email /etc.

any body know a way to get my sounds ( mp3 files ) as notifercations ,
i would like to have my own text and email sounds !
i have tried by downlading a file explora program from the market but alas that dont work either
need help or ideas
create a folder called "notifications" in the root of your sd card, and place all the mp3's or wav in there and it should display when you select a sound in the notification settings.
thatnks for that ...
in the mean time i also found an app called tone picker that seems to work quite well

No problem mate.
Does that let you choose different tones for lets say both email and sms,
cause right now you I can only choose one for both.
i thought so at first but now it dont seem to ? i can have differnt tones for each email account but not a differnt one for sms ....
perhaps a folder is the way to go

If you go in to mail messages and settings and choose a notification there and do the same for sms they end up different. The personalise setting for notifications seems to change both together. Let me know if it works for you too or if its a gmail / sms only solution
The Hero has a 'default notification' sound. You can set this to whatever you want by putting your sound file in a /notifications folder on the SD. This sound file is the one used when you receive an email in the HTC email app, and also when you connect/disconnect USB etc...
You can change your SMS sound file by going into settings in the Messages app. You can change your Gmail email sound file by going into settings in the Google mail app. But currently you cannot have a custom sound file for the HTC email app without also having that sound file as the 'default notification' ie. your Hero will play the same sound when you get an email as it does when it dis/connects to USB. I find that a bit annoying but I'm sure it will be fixed in an update.

[Q] Custom SMS alerts for Contacts Using the Stock Messaging App

I'm trying to set a custom SMS tone for my best friend's contact. I downloaded the alert from Zedge in mp3 format. When I try to set the tone, I get are the default notification tones for my phone but I don't see the custom one I just downloaded.
(If I try to set a custom ringtone - I can see everything no problem though)
I even moved the tone from the Zedge folder to the notifications folder on my sd card.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here and I really prefer to use the stock messaging app. Anyone have any ideas?

Go into your contacts find the name and then edit. Scroll down to the bottom and you can set any ring tones and message alert. Hope that helps. I use ringdroid for custom ringtones and notifications.

You don't get a popup showing your options to choose from? Like in the attached image? If not, you may have to clear the defaults in either zedge or the messaging/contacts apps

That works. I had the Media Storage app set as the default app for ringtones. I cleared the defaults and the Zedge one comes up now and I can select whatever I want. Thanks!

Before I read your post, I found and applied some other instructions that requires moving the downloaded files to a certain folder. Not nearly as easy, but if anyone's interested it's here:

Cool. Glad ya got it working

You can dump mp3s to sdcard/notification folder, then change notification sound as usual.
My text app has a way to use a separate alert tone, other than what the system has set. Some apps allow a different tone for different contacts, but I don't go that far. If you don't have any you like, any MP3 will work or you can use Zedge from the playstore and search for text tones or SMS tones.
I installed this app which allows you to set custom wav/mp3 as notifications and ringtones. Really simplifies the process (has worked on S4/HTC M9 and now 6P.

How do you find the file folders to move it add the files? I'm kind of a tech dummy... Do I need to download a file manager app, or am II just to dumb to find one already on the phone? Lol!
