I followed the instructions from here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743769 ) up until flashing the actual zip and forgot I put the zip on my external sdcard rather than "internal" sdcard. Now my phone won't get past the initial white Samsung Vibrant screen. Also, I can only get into stock recovery. After clicking "reinstall packages" it just reboots and brings me back to stock recovery. Please help. Thank you.
You will need to flash back to stock then you will have access to your phone again.. you will have to start over to flash that rom. after you flash back to stock using odin
use this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
You will need the right windows drivers so Odin will see your phone pick them up here.
Windows 64bit
Windows 32bit

1. Put your phone in download mode by plugging it in and then holding Vol Up+Down and Power. As SOON as the screen goes black release power but NOT Vol Up+Down.
2. Launch Odin
3. Unplug your phone.
4. Load the pit and pda files into odin.
5. Plug your phone back in. You should now see one of the small blocks turn yellow and show you the com port. If not, something is wrong with your drivers.
6. Click start. If it flashes, great. If it hangs at File analasys then repeat 1-5.
6a. If Odin hangs at cache.rfs then move on to 6b.
6b. Unplug your phone (Odin will say it was removed) and remove the battery. DO NOT SHUT DOWN ODIN!!!!!!
6c. Put the battery back in and plug it back into your computer and put it back into download mode using step 1.
6d. Press start on Odin and it should now flash.
Also if you continue to hang at cache.rfs I found that if you delete s1_odin_20100512.pit then copy a new copy of the file over to your odin directory it seems to work fine after that.
Damn it.Thanks....
vol dn+up should get you to the stock recovery util right? the yellow and blue one?
edit: nvm, scare is over lol
On step 6d, where it says to press start again on odin, odin does not let me do this. The start, reset, pit, pda, etc... buttons are grey and will not let me press them. Help!
EDIT: also gives me a message in the upper left corner that says "CACHE" if that helps (in the far upper left box above where the yellow COM3 thing was.

You need to delete your s1_odin_20100512.pit file and then extract a new copy to the odin folder then flash again. happened to me and that is all I did to fix it. step 6d did not work for me has well.
Hmmmm it's still not working. Would it help if i made a video showing what i'm doing then you can look it over and tell me if I'm doing something incorrectly? Also maybe I should be more clear. There is no way for me to start the flash again after removing my device as per step 6 without having to completely restart odin, thus restarting the process.
Update: Still not working. Really need a fix for this. Is there another way to un-brick my phone?
EDIT: To clarify, my problem was getting stuck as Cache.rfs and never going past that. I did try the previous steps listed in this article, as well as trying to reinstall all drivers and even using different Odin copies from other threads (even though they were all the same Odin 3). No .pit file seemed to work for me. Also, I'd like to point out that I have this issue with my netbook, but my work computer where I've done all my Odin flashing before did not have this issue, and I could use the .pit files perfectly fine.
First off, I'm not anyone special (I guess depends on the meaning of special), I don't dev... I play around. That's all. So take this all with a grain of salt.
I had the same issue, and have spent all night trying to fix it. Just now I didn't use the .pit file at all. Just the .tar in the PDA slot. Immediately went through and reflashed everything and I am fully up and running.
I can't guarantee that I don't have some kind of issues now but I am now back at my home screen and the phone seems to be operating fine.
The files I used are as follows:
Stock 2.1 firmware for the Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739091
Samsung studio 7 (seemed to get Odin to recognize the phone without having to disconnect and reconnect, thought it might have something to do with the issue, though not sure): http://www.4shared.com/file/117435710/3d286573/Samsung_PC_Studio_72249.html
And the Samsung USB Drivers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Now, if a real dev can tell us what happens when you don't use the .pit file, we can know if there is any longterm repercussion from this. Short term though, working like a dream. I hope this helps, because being stuck without a working Vibrant sucks!
ODIN is a pain but I've found a way to get it work pretty consistently for me. Whenever you flash a ROM or back to stock, always make sure you enable USB debugging, and have adb working on your computer.
Open up your command console, plug in your device, open up ODIN, and type "adb reboot download". ODIN should recognize your phone when it restarts and a COM will light up.
From my experience, ODIN recognizes the devices better this way and hasn't hung for me so far (granted it's only 3 times). When I was booting into download manually and then plugging in the USB, it would hang at cache.rfs. If you don't have USB debugging enabled, then only thing you can do is keep retrying over and over. Took me like 15 tries once before it finally ran.
Can't thank you guys enough. Phone is back to normal! As soon as I didn't use the pit file it worked like a charm.
hey...i'm in the same situation as you...i can't get it to work...i'm trying to do just the tar file right now but it still hangs on cache.rfs how long did you have to wait?

It should go right away. If it's hanging at cache.rfs, then it's not working. I really think its a drivers issue with ODIN. Just keep restarting your phone and ODIN and retrying.
I used the tar file that is linked to from the second post on this thread. I didn't even download what you linked me to, I just didn't use the pit file, like you told me and it worked with the files I already had.

3)hold power and both volume buttons
4)wait for the vibrant screen to flash twice it will go once then seem like it turns off but then pops up agian
5)after it turns off the second time release the power button but still hold the volume buttons and you should be in download mode now

Time to eat some serious humble pie. I broke my own cardinal rule and tried to fix something that wasn't completely broken. I was having one issue with calls dropping, and I did everything I could hardware-wise, including replacing the SIM. Then last night I tried to do the one-touch-lag-fix, hoping that might help, and I rendered my phone useless. Upon reboot, I am getting a plethora of force closes and cannot get to my main screen. I'm thinking it may have something to do with having already used the MoDaCo lag fix when I first got the phone? The 2 pieces of possible good news are that I can reboot into recovery (although the Clockwork one does not show up) and ADB is working. I assumed that "delete all user data" and "delete cache data" was effectively a wipe, but apparently it's not? Someone said that using Odin may be able to allow me to restore the stock firmware, but I tried to download Kies to get to Odin, it downloaded but it will not install. Am I "bricked", or are there options available? If you don't want to clog up the board on an issue that I don't see anyone else has had, feel free to PM me. Thanks to any & all...

since you can get into recovery, can you just flash the stock ROM thru update.zip?
I went through something like this just yesterday. Yuo need to download all the odin files from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&highlight=odin
I used the all three files link.
The you need to power off your phone. Plug your usb cable into both the phone and your computer. You should see the battery charge screen, when you do hold the up and down volume and power buttons. As soon as the screen goes dark release the power button, this should put you into download mode.
From there follow the odin flashing instructions.

Any activity on the Odin screen? If not, it probably got stuck. Pull the battery and try again. Don't freak when you get the phone-!-computer screen, it's fine. Just telling you the update didn't apply. Use power+vol buttons to get back to download mode and do it again. The whole process shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Ah, another altruistic helper! Thank you.The answer to the question about "activity", I see none of any kind. I'm wondering if everything downloaded correctly? What "screen" should I be seeing? I have 4 icons on my screen from the downloads. Here are their properties:
-odin1.0_T959UVJFD_512.pit_rootupdate.rar
-T959UVJFD.tar
-Odin3.rar
-s1_odin_20100512.rar

Decompress the RAR files. You should get an Odin.exe or something like that. Run that, then follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Select the PIT button, then the 512 pit file (I think it's in the last RAR file you mentioned). Then the PDA button and select the tar file above. Then when you plug in the phone in download mode, one of the boxes at the top of the Odin window should change to yellow I think.. That's telling you it can see the phone. Then hit flash and it should be good to go. I'm going from memory here, so if my directions conflict with that thread, use the ones in the thread.

I'm still not doing too well. It appears as though the Odin is not recognizing the phone. As a test I plugged the phone into the USB with it on, and I got the "mount" thing in the status bar, and then looked in Odin and it showed a yellow "Com 6". I unplugged the phone, powered down, attached the cable, booted into download, and no yellow window with "Com anything". Am I doing something out of order? And the phone keeps saying "downloading..." but isn't doing it.
All better!!! Thanks to all who gave input. It was the "wrong" drivers, I found out what to do and it all worked flawlessly. Let's forget about this thread and it's contents forever more!!!
Can anyone help me? I think I bricked my phone.
I followed the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861253
The thing is, I didn't have the drivers when I put my phone into download mode and put it into the USB, so i left the phone in dl mode and when I replugged it in, I selected the .tar file for PDA and then clicked start.
However, it said "failed on the first upper left box" and I clicked reset. At this point the screen turned black, and now I can't get it to turn back on.
I was on 2.1 rooted. I took out the battery and put it back in and now there's a picture of a phone and a computer with an exclamation mark in between them.

Did you install the Samsung Drivers for your computer? If you can't get the drivers to correctly install and recognize your phone, just try a different computer.
Turn off and pull battery, wait a few minutes. Put battery back in and hold down the 1 key and turn on. You should get the boot loader screen.
If you followed the directions, how did you not install the drivers?
also after y install odin and samsung drivers. i had to restart the computer befor they started working right.
Thanks, the battery trick worked. I forgot to install the driver because I have two comps, and the other computer has the drivers, so I didn't bother installing them again.
Yes, I bricked my phone.
I tried all of your advice and nothing worked. The phone wont boot into download mode, boot to clock work mod, let alone even turn on. I bricked my phone after trying to install Viper ROM 3.0.3. I should have just stayed with Epic Experience 2.0.05 as it was good enough.
Thanks everyone for trying to help but if your phone wont turn on no matter what what you read and try here your phone has been bricked.

the problem is that the phone would not turn on... meaning you can even put it in download mode. i confirmed that it was bricked and that nothing could be done to revive it.
Hey guys,
I am currently experiencing the same problem as the OP.
I was using my phone today and it froze, so I pulled the battery, tried to turn it back on, and got this phone, computer, exclamation point symbol thing
I can get the phone into recovery, but wiping doesn't work.
I can get the phone into download mode to odin, and the comp recognizes it, but the phone turns off within 30 seconds of being in download mode. Not enough time to finish odin'ing.
Any advice?

It is supposed to stay on in download mode. Pull the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug the phone in and see if it will go into download mode with the battery out. If and when it does, pop the battery in and try to Odin the stock files. You have f.reset unchecked, the DI18 tar in the PDA box and Victory_8G.pit file in the pit section right?
Thank you!
I was using the proper files, but that download mode with the battery out did the trick. It stayed on long enough to odin back to DI18.
Thanks again!

For future reference I can fix hard bricked EPIC phones if you need it. Just PM me with questions if you have any. Hard bricks are only fixable via JTAG.
Ok, before I get flamed, I did search (and search and search and search)...
Here's the back story. I have a VZW Galaxy Tab, and I was running OldMacNut's Honeycomb alpha on my tab... I wanted to be able to use 3G, so I wanted to use another ROM, so I attempted to flash one through recovery. It failed everytime I tried, so I went back to Heimdall and did a clean original stock download, and everything went wonderful...
Me, not being able to leave the damn thing alone figured I would root it, and then throw CWM back onto it, then install the GB rooted ROM on... Well, when I ran CWM it converted the the file extention, and when it went to reboot, it just boot looped.
So I held the power button down, and shut it down. I had it plugged into the charger and walked away from it for a few minutes to take care of something else, and when I came back to it, the sceen showed the battery icon like it was charging, but a multi-lined circle in the middle of the battery, and the green moving part of the battery wasn't working like I have seen on the Galaxy S devices...
I went to try to turn it back on, and nothing happened, so I researched some, and left well enough alone and let it charge.
Now, the battery icon isn't even on the screen, and the screen stays black all the time.... No matter any combination of buttons or screen holds I do, it isn't turning back on now, even while it is plugged directly into the wall.
I'm at a lost.
Any help would be AWESOME!!!!
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!
EDIT: I let the Tab sit for a LONG time, and I got the battery icon thing back... Still afraid to try anything else atm.
PLEASE PLEASE HALP!!!!!

That's the issue... I can't. I've tried and tried. I left the tab plugged in overnight, so I'm hoping that it at least is fully charged now, so I can try to mess with it today some.
here's what you should do. let's start from the very beginning.
1. download heimdall. get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265
2. download the stock verizon files. get them here: http://www.blackmugmedia.com/Android...n/VZW Stock/
you need all four files.
3. download the drivers for the samsung sch-i800. find those here: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...v1.3.350.0.exe
4. unzip heimdall. go into the drivers folder, and run zadig.exe. at the top, select 'list all devices'. go to the dropdown menu, and select Samsung Composite USB (i'm pretty sure that's what it was called.) click start, and let it run.
5. open the heimdall front end.
6. put system in system (if you're flashing to ec02, then put factory in system) put cache into cache put param into param put the zimage into both the kernel and recovery slots.
7. turn your tab off, and plug it into the computer using USB. hold down the power and the volume down buttons until you see the little droid dude with a shovel.
8. click the start button on heimdall.
9. wait for the flash to complete (don't unplug your device, obviously, during the flashing.) once your phone reboots, it's okay to unplug it.
10. now, boot into the stock recovery, and wipe data and cache. update to ec02
11. enable usb debugging.
12. plug your phone back in to the computer.
13. now run superoneclick for root. get that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
14. either play with it in stock, or go find oldmacnut's excellent Better Than Life Rom, and follow the instructions to flash that.
15. enjoy your tab!
Hit me on the thanks button if you find it useful ; )
Sent from my Galaxy Tab using xda premium
That's good advice for some people infinity, but as detailed in the immediately prior post, the OP cannot access Download Mode, rendering your instructions unworkable. Without either Recovery or Download modes, there's not much you can do unless you're willing to try the UnBrickable Mod (search for it).
Hope that helps.
I'm not sure what type of "bricked" this would be but, I tried to flash my Canadian Fido S4 I337m with a MF3 modem. I did this through Odin Mobile Pro. At first it was all good, it started to restart with a blue android figure. It started to take a really long time and nothing was happening so I decided to turn the phone off. Now the phone won't turn back on and it won't connect to the PC. I have my backup saved on my sd card but I can't get the phone to load at all.
It's currently stuck the battery charging power up screen. I can't post a picture since I haven't posted 10 times apparently... So it's the grey battery icon, the circle in the middle isn't moving whatsoever.
Did a battery pull, tried starting it in safe mode, and tried to restart it in the download mode. All of which have failed.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Download Odin 3.07 for the PC.... you flashed the wrong mode... I believe you flashed a US modem not a Canadian on... suggest NC1 can be found in the forum...
With the phone unplugged, press volume down +home+power if you get a warning, release buttons and press voulme up to go to download mode...
Start Odin.... important... take off auto reboot....
there are instructions on how to properly flash the modem... likely in the same thread you found the file.....
Flash only the modem.bin file inside the folder... do not flash the nonhalos file....
Most instructions sau flash once... reboot to download mode.. flash again....
Basically let me know if you can get to download mode... I tried to google blue android on screen but didn't find anything yet... first I have heard of blue... I have seen green dead ones though....

No, I can't seem to get into download mode. It just keeps heading on to the the blue android. I purchased a dongle jig to get it to download mode on ebay hoping that would work.
Method 1 Odin Mobile
Extract TAR and place modem.bin on Internal or External SD Card
Open mobile Odin (free version works but pro is awesome)
Select modem 2 and find extracted bin file
Press flash firmware button
System will boot to download
Hold power button for 10 seconds if download mode in green comes up.( should be blue)
Odin will install modem files
Done
This is what I was following. It said if it comes up as a blue android it's good.

If you put the modem file on an external sd card.... maybe you could pull the card, put it in a usb reader and put the proper modem.bin file on the card and put it back in the phone and power it up.... see what happens. I am guessing it couldn't finish the process because you have the wrong modem file...... Okay so now I realize you are stuck on the mobile odin logo... (blue guy) search google for how to get out of that or go to the mobile odin thread and ask chainfire... it is his app....
I've got the problem fixed. I re-flashed my whole firmware and managed to get the phone into download mode using a USB Jig. This is for reference if anyone encounters the same problem in the near future.
Thanks for the help and advice though.
Hi. Browsed for ages and always come here for answers.
Here's my problem.
2x S8s. SM-950f.
Updated to most recent software through software update. Both phones were glitchy and crashing and just generally irritating after.
Factory data reset etc. This did not resolve the problems, also led to one of them having issues with FRP (annoying)
Used Odin to try and flash the latest firmware (from sammobile, UK BTU) after flashing both, they reset and powered on. Got stuck at the S8 screen.
Restarted then both were at the "an error occurred during update" screen.
Managed to get back to download screen. Re checked the software and model numbers, even that the bootloader was the correct version etc. All was fine.
Connected to Odin, shows that it is connected, but nothing happens when clicking start.
Now after attempting that, both phones will not power on.
(One will when placed on the wireless charger, but just sticks at S8 screen) and download mode or reset screen can not be accessed. So, not exactly happy. And totally out of ideas
Any suggestions, beyond taking it to a shop to see if anyone can help.
yes .....dont tuch the phones for 24 hours let the battery die ...it will...connect to pc and then try download mode....u may need to press combination for like 1 minute to get to download mode....flash twrp reboot directly into it when odin says successfully .....wipe system data ....dont turn on phone download any custom rom flash and enjoy.....it will trip knox but worth than getting a new board....
Okay, will give that a try.
TWRP?
TWRP install

Just said, wait until your device powers off due battery insufficience. Plug cable and hold at the same moment vol(down)+bixby+power. Then press vol(up) at the warning screen to proceed to odin mode. Let it charging a while like 1 h. Then unplug it and plug it to your pc. In Odin select ap the previous downloaded file. Take your mobile in your hand. With one hand, prepare your fingers to vol(up)+bixby and with the other hand start the flashibg process. Be careful, and take your hand directly from the mouse if you clicked start in odin, and position your one finger to power button, but dont click. If odin start pass, press immidiately the buttons (vol(up)+bixby+power) and let it to start into recovery. If you arrived to recovery, reply to us if not search for help!!!
Good luck

Okay, downloaded TWRP, can get phone calls nected to Odin but when I extract TWRP it doesn't give a valid file type.
Am I being dumb.
No files appear that Odin will recognise.
Also just shows as "recovery" no .tar or anything
Ignore above. Corrupted download.
Sorted.
Now when flashing TWRP is gets to a fail due to
"Complete (write) fail

Not sure what stage your at and maybe some more useless ideas
1. Trying to flash twrp is kinda of useless if you can't get into your system need oem unlock for that.
2. Have you tried taking out Sim card and SD card and reboot.
3. If you can at least boot try smart switch as it has a emergency recovery option.
4. Trying rebooting in safe mode.
All been attempted
