[Q] Network disappeared - Vibrant General

Hi guys,
I have an unlocked Vibrant from TMobile, using it on WIND in Canada. On the first day with a WIND SIM, I was able to see the WIND network, and use data as expected. Then I went to school (outside coverage) and the phone roamed to the "WIND Away" (ie: Rogers) network, as expected. However, when I re-entered the coverage area, I could no longer see the WIND Home network! I've been stuck on roaming for a few days now, and I just can't see the home network. I've scanned the for Network Operators a million times - all I see is WIND Away!
My girlfriend has the same phone, and we got her unlock code yesterday. After unlocking, she was immediately on WIND Away, too. I don't see others complaining on the WIND site, so their network must be up. What could cause this? Does Android cache the network operator list, or do some sort of automatic filtering that I can disable? This is getting pretty frustrating.
Thanks!
edit: Oh, I've tried power cycling and removing the battery.

Bump?
Also tried a factory reset... What could cause the phone to simply not see a network that I know is present and that it used to see? I live less than a block from a tower.

Turning of Roaming completely

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave

Forcing G1 to Roam

I'm going camping this coming weekend to a place in the mountains that tmobile has very poor coverage in. I was there last month and discovered my friends at&t phone had full service while my g1 showed service, just didn't show any bars and other times only showed one bar. Calls with my phone were flacky and dropped out, his worked perfectly. Is there a way to make my phone switch to roaming on at&t?
I have a national plan on T-Mobile.
I'm running Cyanogen 3.9.5
Thanks!

Should do it automatically. I saw my phone do this the other weekend when I was travelin. My phone showed ATT, Corr Wireless, and some other service and certain points.
The tmobile signal is just strong enough to keep it from roaming there. I was hoping it would switch automatically but it never did. I know the phone does have roaming ability, i've seen it switch to roam and work fine.
I would assume then just change your APN settings.
you can try manual operator selection, by going Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Network Settings > Network Operators > Search Networks then select whatever network you want to use
Hi.. I'm using CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 on my HTC Dream and I've got the same issues with roaming. I've travelled to 3 countries last month and I had issues with connecting to GSM network.. There was error message that my sim card cannot work with specific networks.. I've tried to use auto connection and I've tried also to connect manually to specific networks, but with the same result. I've tried also rebooting and removing the battery... Problem disappeared after few hours... I had this issue in Austria, Hungary and Turkey so it's not operator/country specific. Problems doesn't exist on different cell phone (Nokia). Everything works fine after powering on the phone.

Reason for "SIM does not allow a connection to this network"

I remember people talking about this on the G1 forums and people were thinking this was a bug in the Android software. I do not know if anyone has provided the answer to this already, but I figured I would share what I have found. (I also posted this in the G1 section)
Turns out that tmobile and at&t have dropped their roaming agreement in several areas. The "not allowed on this network" message is due to the phone trying to connect to these towers. Even when selecting "select auto" or selecting a weak tmobile tower, because it fails connecting to the weak tower and then will try to connect to the stronger tower (att) but is not allowed.
This whole thing sucks though, because I have a metal roof that kills my tmobile signal, but I am able to get a weak att signal inside.
negatory
I believe you're wrong there about signal strength.
I've had two seperate g1's that displayed this error when inserting a TMO and/or ATT sim. The phones were both unlocked, and sitting with 2 feet of a TMO g1 with 4 bars of 3G signal.
After updating the radios to most current and calling TMO to question someone withe sense, I was upgraded through 2 levels of customer support. The last fella I talked to apparently knew things, but couldn't say much - you get the idea. He did reset my connection (or said he did) and I watched as service for all three phones on my account died (connectivity) and then gained signal again. All while on the phone with him.
Afterwards, he suggested I clear all caches, facotory reset, etc.
Low and behold, both phones worked with 3G (TMO) and EDGE (ATT) just fine afterwards. Now, was it something HE did exclusively, or a combination of his 'reset' (whatever it was) AND my factory wipe of the phones ? Got me.
I WILL BET YOU A COKE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH UPGRADING THE RADIO TO CURRENT -AND- WIPING. If i'm wrong, i'll paypal you coke money... but I think I'm right.
If a tmo person in the know, -not a speculator-, would like to grace us, that would be cool.
This has worked for a total of three "Your SIM card does not allow connection to this network" type error'd phones. All of which were unlocked, rooted, and running cyanogenmod latest.
2 cents.
I contacted Google support about this. Apparently if T-Mobile has property rights to the area where you're connecting you are only allowed to connect to T-Mobile's network no matter how poor or lack of signal there is.
Yeah, I tested this myself, tried to connect to the only tower available (an att) and was not allowed. I know you have the roaming issue is you ever see "emergency calling only" in the service bar. Means it has a signal but is not allowed to roam on that signal. I have a good signal outside and in parts of the house, just not where I am the most. There might be a bug where it gets stuck trying to connect to the wrong towers, but the source of the issue lies in the lack of access to att towers in many areas.

[Q]Issues with Data Roaming (3.5mm MT3G, CM6.1.0 RC1, Wind Mobile CA)

Hey Everyone,
I am not certain how specific this issues is to my exact situation, so I am describing every related aspect that I can.
Details
Phone: HTC MT3G (3.5mm Jack version), rooted, running CM 6.1.0 RC1
Network: Wind Mobile (in Canada)
-- please indicate if any other details are needed for troubleshooting --
Issue
Wind mobile offers an unlimited plan that includes data, provided you stay within what they call their "Home Zone (ie the metropolitan area known as GTA, in my case). When travelling outside of the Home Zone, you enter an Away Zone. This is essentially roaming on Rogers network, using 2G (Edge) for data. This costs a lot and so naturally I don't want to roam.
Before the phone was rooted and upgraded, I had checked the box to in settings to disable data while roaming. I travelled in and out of the Home Zone and it worked as expected - that is, turning off the data connection as soon as the network switched from Home to Away. As expected, it re-enabled data upon re-entering the Home Zone.
Since rooting/updating, this functionality seems to have disappeared. I have the box checked, but as soon as I step into an Away Zone, it switches to 2G and starts using data whilest roaming. At first, I thought this might be because I performed the upgrade process in an away zone and as such, the phone would associate that with being "Home". However it keeps data across Home and Away (which negates that theory as "Home" should now be "Away" and data disabled.
I wiped and started again in a Home Zone, with no success.
So:
1) Is there something I am doing wrong, or a known way to remedy this issue?
If not,
2) Is there any way to disable 2G (similar to the way you can disable 3G for battery savings?) This would be an indirect way to solve the issue, as the only time 2G is used is when the phone is in an Away Zone.
Thanks for any advice and help you can provide!
Bump - any ideas?

Coverage when traveling?

I was recently traveling through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming by car. Network coverage was quite bad. From time to time it would help to turn the phone to flight mode, and back, and then it would discover the network. (Or on and off altogether)
In Wyoming, even in major(ish) cities I had no coverage. When I scanned for the network, I could see various nets, but not T-mobile.
Then something strange happened: I put the phone on the net through wifi. I saw a strange message "SIM updated" or something like that. Afterwards I had 4G coverage. (???)
What is going on? How can I keep the internet working while driving? And what is that strange SIM message? Can I do that myself without needing to have wifi?
Thanks!
