Okay unfortunately 5 mins after rooting my phone I noticed my replacement Vibrant has a bad screen. I used the one-click program to root, so I did the same thing to unroot. I downloaded ROM Manager after I unrooted to confirm the phone was unrooted and ROM Manager seems to think so (it told me to root my phone).
However, I am wondering if there is any way to *confirm* my phone has been unrooted (i.e. manually look for the root files and make sure they are not there)? I ask because I reset my phone to factory settings after unrooting, but updated.zip and chromemod folder were still present when I looked under files, which sort of scared me into thinking T-Mobile may be able to detect I had rooted.

^^I second this, if you are not rooted, you will get a "su not found" type of error.

you could also do it from adb.

Well, I know there will probably be a lot of people freaking out on me, but from how I use my phone the only use I've had so far is using cachemate to clear cache, and possibly modding the look of the os. I personally used to it to remove the annoying tmo boot and shutdown sounds/video.

Welcome to Android 30Glock
the main benefit of rooting is to be able to remove bloat-ware. Bloatware plagues the vibrant. Besides that there are other things you can do like custom roms(not many for the vibrant but they will come), with custom roms comes custom themes, also you can increase you cpu frequency. There are a few awesome apps out there that require root (Titanium Backup).
Basically think of it as you have just been given a new windows machine at work, and the admin gave you User permissions, so yeah you can do some cool stuff, but to really get in and have some fun you need admin permissions. To root/unroot this phone it is jaw dropping easy! Thank you samsung. Thank you DEVS!
Install Root Explorer and try to navigate to your system folder.

it's because the ruu is signed with test keys, not the release keys, so not everything is showing up.

Most of my purchased apps are gone, and they include Basketball, Toss It, Flight Control, and a few others..quite disappointed as I did the RUU install via the .exe file and so far, haven't found a way to undo it and go back to DamageControl 2.1...

Not to laugh about this, but maybe if that RUU had been kept hidden in the bowles of someones computer that wouldn't have happened. This is what drama does....

RUU has test-key. thats means no protected apps. You should have flashed one of the many roms based on this RUU(damage,fresh or darchlegend even though its based on the Legend RUU). There already set to go.

Lol, not to sound like a jerk but we knew this. I started the thread because I was wondering if anyone else knew which programs were affected. The whole idea behind loading the RUU was to test it out. It would be great if everyone didn't come in here and tell us how we should have loaded a custom ROM. Most of us probably came from a custom ROM to this, like myself.

Sorry, that was just your first post to the forum, and it had no implications that you knew how to do anything whatsoever. I was just going on what I read from your post. I was guessing you just joined and saw the RUU and flashed it. I am sorry.

Wow, is this easily done? I'm missing root manager, but otherwise am liking the leak (minus sprint crap).
Also.notice quick boot isn't working, but I'm sure its fixable, I just haven't looked or may not have the experience to get it going.

Yeah it is pretty easy, just need to get your build.prop, then in wordpad, if using windows use wordpad not notepad, just have to make a few changes. After that you clear the market cache. When I did this last night, none of the protected apps showed up, however this morning they all did. So for reason it may take a bit to work right but it did work. Just checked and root manager is showing in my market too.
I'll just post one I found online. If you adb push this to /system/ it should work.

Good to see you got it going. You should share your build.prop (or link to instructions) so others that may have made the early (and quite risky) install of the RUU could get it going. That would be a nice thing to do

The thing is, root explorer isn't free. I want to give people an easy, free solution (maybe flashing something from recovery?). For now, ADB will work for me, but in the future I want to provide something flashable from recovery.
Well, the best thing to do, simply run a sql command along with the rooting update.zip.

It isn't free but it isn't expensive either. You just dropped a large wad of cash for the phone, seems like another $3 to get it the way you want it wouldn't be such a big deal.

Droid Explorer is.
I'm an android noob but experienced linux user, so I came up with my own free solution: download a terminal emulator app (the one i got was free, and called, simply, Terminal Emulator, I think).
Then (in the terminal emulator):
Copy the settings.db file to the SD card:
To get superuser access so you can get to the settings.db file (need a rooted phone, obv):

And confirm the popup allowing access.

Then hook up your phone via USB (mass storage method) and use your window manager to copy that from the phone to the computer, edit with an SQL database browser, save it, verify it's still good, move it back to the SD card, then, back on the phone in the terminal emulator:

Shouldn't have to confirm the popup allowing access again, as the first time appears to do it.
Move the original file to a backup name (just to be safe):

This guide was for the main 2.2.1 update. Since the last time that post was edited, there was a second 2.2.1 OTA pushed, which I believe was a small fix for adjusting partitions or something similar and gave a slightly different build number. You know if this still works for FRG83D?

Rooting by the method quoted works on all Android builds to date.
Ok- finally found some time for this but I'm getting a permission error at the step:
./busybox cp busybox /system/bin
Everything above that works well but when I reach this step, it messes up.

The guide is prob missing a step. Make sure you change the permissions on busybox to allow it to run before you try using it. Try chmod 755 busybox

Make sure you actually did get root, I had to run the first step a few times until I got the root prompt on my friends phone.

First thing to do after rooting is to make a backup. You would be surprised as to how many people forget to do this.

First, flash any custom recovery if you already hadn't.
Then make a nandroid backup. It's a 'must' so you can go back if custom ROM flashing goes wrong. Also, backup your applications and their data is recommended.

First off, I'm new to xda Developers so please excuse me if this is in the wrong forum! I thought I'd post information about a tool I wrote here which roots stock 4.0.3 leak on the A500, A501 and assumingly the A200 too. Its literally one click - just enable USB debugging. "ICS Root" also installs, optionally, FaceLock and Trebuchet (although FaceLock doesn't want to work. It lets you set it up though =P)
Since version 5.0.1 this also now works with the new 0.022.00 leak!

The only real system requirements are Windows (with .Net Framework 4) and an Iconia on the stock 4.0.3 leak. I hope somebody finds this useful its been tested by myself and a couple of TegraOwners users and it works well.
In terms of the technique used, it uses the great Jay Freeman's mempodroid exploit to gain root at which point it mounts /system rw and installs su, busybox and Superuser.apk so no real surprises there. Installing Trebuchet adds that apk to /system/app and installing FaceLock installs the apk to /system/app before installing the pittpatt folder to the flexrom (mounted as /system/vendor). I plan to open source it when all the requested features have been implemented and the code has been cleaned up.

If you are on the cwm with the HC boot loader it should work as Its Magic will be run..
if you are on the new boot loader as in the full non modded leak.. It will give you secure boot error ..
The new boot loader Blocks its magic.

Hey this worked easy. I had to re-install USB drivers and make sure I had the latest from Google. Other then that, hit the button, wait about 1.5 minutes, and it rebooted! No problems thus far! Thanks Again!

root doesnt work like its supposed to. i know its only half root due to the bootloader, but terminal emulator flat out says i'm not rooted after this despite sixasis working and titanium backup/root checker both saying i have root and busybox. i'm going to post this on TO as well for you incase you dont check here often.

That's storage cos terminal works for me and running su in an adb shell works great too.

After reading the other post, I have found that I cannot write to the system directory from the device itself. The folder attributes indicate that it is set to write, however File Explorer HD will not let me. I have tried to create a folder in the /system and it will not accept the addition. The strange thing is that Root Check says it is rooted, File Explorer HD accepts putting it into Root Explore, but that is it. It is odd. I will try to reapply the Root to see if that makes a difference.

Please, read the op before bringing this up. This method is for half root, its the only way possible right now on stock leak ics. There is a special script you need to use to mpunt system. You can find it in the stock leak thread, run it in terminal or use rom toolbox and set it as a script to run at boot because rebooting loses write privileges.

Version 3 came out this morning
It features some bug fixes as well as a completely new remount menu which mounts /system rw properly on the fly. Tested with a busybox installer app

Just to be a little more specific, the app says the process was OK and state that the tablet is rooted but the tablet doesn't reboot by itseld and su is not installed. I tried to install su manually but it's unable to find a previous su package on the system.

ah okay it appears a completely new leak has been released. It is possible that the mempodroid exploit has been patched up. I'm gonna look into it soon. I can't much tonight - I have school work. I'll see what can be done and what the differences between leaks are.

Is there a way to root the Streak 5 or install custom recovery without using USB connection? The USB charger port is broken so I am unable to connect through USB. I´ve tried to root the phone with GingerBreak and Z4Root without success. Maybe it´s possible to root the phone or flash recovery with Flash_image in Terminal Emulator but I am unable to find a guide to do so. Well, if the answer you were looking for is "yes it can be done", then it's obvious why you haven't found the answer you were looking for.
You have to have a working port on the Streak to install CWM since installing a custom recovery requires being in the Streak's Fastboot mode. Rooting may be possible, but unlikely since you have to copy files to the \system directory, which isn't writable unless you've rooted using CWM to install the files or ADB to push them.
Short of finding an exploit to root with, he might(?) be able to by disassembling it and pushing root to /data/local and setting permissions with a pc.

ah.. i see... by taking out innerSD and manually push root into it.. it seems possible that way...
Rooting is ultimately getting SU somewhere runnable and changing it's permissions to 06755.
It just makes the most sense to place it in /system/xbin 99.95% of the time.
it seems the guy doesnt read the forum thorough enough.. because there is solution to it already..

Dont recall gingerbreak working on 350+ as dell pretty much patched everything.
I believe it works on 318 or thereabouts, but OP is on 360 he already stated it didnt work (but not which exact version of gingerbreak)
well.. at least he can try first... but it seems not possible is it?
Gingerbreak version 1.2 works on stock 351 but not on stock 360.

That sounds like a good idea since I have already cutted out for access to the internal SD card. What would be the best program for Windows 7 to push root to the SD card and change the permissions?
You would need to be able to read ext3 partitions and modify the file permissions.
I've never bothered trying under windows, the simplest way is to do it under linux.
You can install it in a VM if you wish, or you can try and figure out how to do it with additional software under windows.
Regardless you should try pushing su to /data/local/ and setting it's permissions to 06755 (rws--r-s-r-x).
If you get that far we'll continue from there
Would it be possible to get a repacked 360 stock ROM (apk or zip package) that is already rooted, and then install it on the Streak using the 360 stock recovery? Maybe that´s not possible because of the signature verification but I wonder if it would be possible. Then I would have to find someone with a rooted 360 ROM to make the package for me.

sorry to bust in. /data is mounted nosuid for a reason. Don't know whether this is so on the 360, but at least check ($ mount |grep /data) before you open your device and risk hardware damage.
