Hi to all Canadian users
Samsung Galaxy S series phone is coming to Canada very soon. Almost all the carriers has one. I am with rogers and they are getting the captivate.
I am really really tired of waiting for 2.1 /2.2 or just getting all the bugs fixed. There is no 65K screen, no multi touch (please don't start arguing that there is no use of MT, there are other forums for that). I don't even know how many other stuffs I should be complaining about....someone cares to fill them!
So yeah I am jumping the ship when Captivate comes to Rogers. Anyone else wanna join??
I personally think the samsung captivate lacks in style, and It's samsung you wouldn't get great support either. I ready stick with S.E design is much better.
Why did you buy x10 if you knew it had 1.6 firmware...
Its your choice my friend just look in the Samsung Galaxy S forum before you decide to buy it. Apparently there is a lot of people unhappy with it, problems like overheating, sluggish performance, burn ins on the screen, fast battery drain, bad build quality (cheap plastic) and lots of other things. I am also in Canada and looked at it as an option but i came to the conclusion that it wont be better than the x10 or at least not worth the switch. The fact that its a Samsung phone puts me away also, oh and no flash or light for the camera? wtf. Anyway make sure you read all the problems that people have with it before you buy it so that you know what you re getting into.
Yah im looking into the vibrant myself. Then again im also thinking about the n900 still. Going to check a bell store tomorrow to try out the vibrant. The screen looks amazing in all the reviews ive seen. Really gotta check it out.

Not a bad phone but i would say, wait a few weeks and after the launch take the decision.
It does some things better than the X10 (faster, multitouch, froyo), it does some things worse (no LED flash, IMO worse screen, worse build quality, poor support).
Just make sure you know the phone before you buy it. You probably won't regret it, but it's not any significant improvement (aside from OS)...
Look, if someone with a Desire or a Galaxy S wants to do a straight trade, then I am sold, but I am not going to go through the hassle of selling my X10, then forking over an extra $250 to get either one of those.
At that rate, I'd rather have the iPhone 4 (no reception issues with any that I've tested in Vancouver).
I would hop on the train as well, but I do not like the physical built of the captivate... If it was the i9000 or vibrant, I would have switched. I'm a sucker for Super AMOLED, I rarely use my phone outside, I always use it inside.
i would stick with x10 . i played with galaxy s today at bell . its a nice phone but the built quality is really bad and worse technical support and no flash . x10 is getting 2.1 end of month or early september so its not long of a wait. and iphone 4 is out of the question with consumer report rated it *dont buy it* u cant do much with it even u jailbreak it there there is alot of restrictions n stuff u cant do and android os u can customize the sh**t of out it . i did a test on iphone 4 and my x10 and x10 loads quicker and faster . even i was soo frustrated about to sell it. but u cant sell it for much so id rather keep it . the only phone i would get other then x10 would be desire . which is coming to telus august 6th
I would probably stay out of it.Checking out the forums. It drops a lot of calls and has some major GPS and lag issues. Of course, if you want to go by numbers you should go for the Captivate given it has a higher version of the OS installed. I have used the i9000 though and except for the screen, which is gorgeous, there isnt much there.oh and touchwiz looks like it has been ported from a funskool toy.
i had a samsung pixon12, build quality was cheap, and that phone stopped working after a month even after it was brand new, samsung didnt help me at all and i had to pay extra money from the store i bought it from in order to get it repaired. after that i never went back to samsung and i dont think i will.
the x10 is nice but u are right it does have its share of problems. if ur gonna switch u might as well make a proper upgrade and go for the EVO 4G or the soon to come out Dell Streak (5 inch screen!!/1ghz processor [ also runs 1.6 but soon to get an update supposedly])
anyways im gonna stick with my x10 for now until i can get a good price on the dell streak becuase i use my phone a lot for entertainment due to commuting to university, so a 5 inch screen would do me a lot of good
i dont reccomend samsung. HTC is fantastic though ive used the TOUCH HD/touch pro 2/HD2 and was very happy with them. but hated windows mobile. dont know about dell but if i make the switch ill come back here and let u guys know how that worked out lol
hope it helps u figure out where u wanna head.
Well, this is a thread about Canadian users, so the Evo 4G is out of the question, and the iPhone 4's "reception issue" is not a problem here, at least in Vancouver.
Also, as much as the Streak intrigues me, it is basically the same hardware and software as the X10 (1.6 but without lovely Rachel), and I'm not sure it has a TRUE multi-touch panel like the Droid Incredible either.
I've yet to play with the Galaxy S, but if it is as terribly built as some of you say, then the only other viable option is the Desire, which is put together like a tank and has LED flash. Its design is pedestrian, but the thing is SOLID.
Still tho the desire is not an improve ment over the x10. Think about it smaller screen, ****ter camera, ugly at front of x10 and screen issues like pink tint, burn ins and broken dualtouch, only thing better at the moment is software and a little more ram. I dont know why people think this way, you probably dont have your x10 set up right so that you think this way, I will probably make a video of mine and show everyone how fast, smooth and beautiful it runs I just have a feeling some people dont know how to use adw right and make the best out of their phone. I mean if your ready to switch your x10 for a desire there must be somthing wrong, In matter of fact there is a lot of people here that have switched from desire to x10 ask them why they switched.

Those screen issues affect the SLCD model? I wasn't aware of that.
Just because the screen is smaller, it doesn't make it worse since the resolutions are nearly identical.
I like the Desire because of its very solid build (have you held one?), extra RAM, and best of all, latest Android builds with HTC Sense.
That being said, the Desire is far more expensive if purchased from unauthorized dealers.

Most likely not the one with the SLCD but still explain how is it an improvement over the x10. Just the little more ram? Or the software that we will have soon?
I still wondering why people that would like to switch from X10 to another phone, post their suffer of having X10 here. You want change then go change, no need for second opinion from us.
I buy X10 knowing its Android 1.6, know that update will takes months to come. But i buy because i like Timescape and Mediascape, which is the main selling point to X10.
At my office, i have a lot of android phone for development test phone, i have HTC Dream, LG GW 620, Nexus One, Motorola DEXT/CLIQ, Samsung Galaxy Spica and my Sony Ericsson X10. I can say some of strong point of X10 compared to the other android in list.
Prebuilt media player is nice, compared to Nexus One basic player
The phonebook looks very nice, i like the full hi-res photo in the phonebook Timescape, plus seeing the photo when some one calling or we make call
Watching video while riding public transport in 16 : 9 screen resolution, without letterbox (most of movie i watched in phone is in HD ratio)
It comes with WMV, WMA playing capability
Timecape make me easier to read multiple one or two line SMS from my friends
Slick design of web-browser compared to other phone basic browser
Great product support (except for the firmware updates) from SE, like the PlayNow, i buy some songs with it, and also TrackID.
Stuff that is missing, but can still live without it
No multiple Gmail account can be set in the phone Gmail app (love the threaded view of gmail
Picasa and Facebook photo is not cache in the phone, have to download them everytime you want to see (this decision is made, because if the all photos is prefetched, people living in country with expensive GPRS will get mad, i know because i working in mobile sector)
No multitouch, but this i can live nicely without it
No Facebook and Phonebook photo autosync like Nexus One
So that is some of my opinion of why i choose X10, i guess some of us would think the same.
One think that i bit disappointed with X10 is that first when their haven't release, i though there will be a front facing camera, a lot of website says will have one. Which turnout to be Light Sensor or Proximity Sensor. hahaha.
But can live without it anyway, even though i like making 3g video call with my GF.
Got a chance to play with Bells Vibrant. Its nice. Its really nice actually. The screen is amazing. Its easily better than the x10's. Its very light. Didnt feel cheap to me, just insanely light. I guess to some that means cheap. The ui is too iphone like to me. But I guess we can always change that. I like the front facing camera on it, we all know this will start being used now that apple has told everyone they should use it. Also like the tvout function. Im definetely tempted to get it.

The Captivate is a nice phone, the best of the Galaxy S versions, it steals its looks from the X10 I would say, but I would never give up the X10's screen and camera. AMOLED? No thanks, HTC is finally abandoning those screens. Plus we're getting 2.1 the next month at the latest, and from what I know we can expect further upgrades fairly soon after.
As an aside I don't use the built in Gmail app, I find the web version is much better, is the Gmail app on 2.1 better then the one in 1.6?

It's in the software, man I like HTC Sense. Rachel is nice, but not with 1.6. The Desire should get 2.2 by the time that we get 2.1. Bear in mind, I have no "desire" to sell my X10 for a Desire, but I do admire its build. It feels REALLY solid.

after X1...i feel little apprehensive to buy another sony ericsson phone..the way they ditched their customers..i kinda feel betrayed..the phone feels like crap now...outdated OS...laggy interface, finger- unfriendly.
X panels was a joke
- how useful is timescape/mediascape?
now saw the forum..and X10 also has sufficient amount of bugs compared to other Android phones...infact much more than any other high end android phone
it is a cool phone..looks classy..good to show off.
-but does it perform decently as a phone?...will i have problems making phone calls & texting?
-and will rooting come on X10? ...coz i want a phone i can customize later..and not a phone which becomes dinosaur like X1

I believe you answered your own question
I'll be honest,
I was fortunate enough to have an HTC Desire for 2 weeks before I got the X10...
I sold the desire because I was under the impression that the only things I didn't like about the X10 were to do with Android 2.1 which would be sorted in the update.
After playing with the X10 I'm starting to miss the Desire - the camera seemed to be better with crisper images (surprising?! YEP!!) but again, I'm hoping this will all change with updates, so I'm kind of relying on SE to sort all this out with updates.
I do like the X10, don't get me wrong, BUT I think I will like it even more assuming that I'm right that the updates will sort out the issues.
You are right to be apprehensive. I jumped on this a soon as it was released in the UK. Even though their was a lot of controversy about the specs I bought this.
I also knew the Desire was about to be released to at around the same time.

MediaScape is very pretty indeed but i still find myself using the stock music app from time to time for the best functionality.
With Mediascape I have noticed that it does take a few button presses to get to where you want to go. This is down to both the menu structure and the fact on my current firmware the app doesn't always respond to my key presses. I have also found that the pics that i have tagged regularly revert back to their untagged state. The ability to create playlists using Mscape on the device is also lacking.
I tried setting Timescape as my homescreen but it suffered from serious slow down on launch. The app draw was also affected so I reverted back to the stock android's 3 homescreens and the phone was lightening quick again.

In short NO. as phone it is hit a miss. The In-Call Volume is far too quiet and and turned up to max volume on 1.6 you get background interference.
In addition to this there are no initiate call\ end call hard keys sometime feels like there too many options/button presses to make and receive calls.
It works but I feel that it's not as intuative as HTC's own design.
Texting.. Again out of the box texting can be quite a task as the SE keyboard doesnt always recognise key presses. However this can be narrowed down to specific keys when it happens.
You can overcome this though by installing the HTC keyboard or by using Better keyboard from the market.
One more thing to note with text is that TimeScape offers full conversation history with images too and it all looks very tidy. However when you want to respond to message you are taken into what looks like different app that looks less impressive. On the plus side the sms app works in landscape.
On the Plus side, the screen is glorious, browsing is a joy, the OS although not 2.1 is still a joy to use (Comparing to my old Hero on 1.5).
Google maps with Nav and the Camera are also great.
I can't say im completely satisfied with the X10 and on occasion I have been tempted to swap for a Desire. However I have this foolish hope that SE will come good and make this device what it was designed to be. I'm sure you will have heard about the planned updates.

I think Root will come eventually but at the moment this device isn't as popular as other android handsets because of SE's past record. It's also evident that alot of people are tempted by the x10, but are not sure wether to make the commitment.
HTC is the safe choice (tried and tested) and I thats why they get root first.
don't do my mistake x10 is shi*ty htc rules ,i regretdd leaving my hd2 ,i will threw the x10 into garbage and return my hd2 to be my main device ,or buy a desire . the x10 feels to be a prerelease prototype device ,very un usable

Right... Very unusable and you threw it in the garbage and then returned to WinMo..
Something tells me theres a fair bit of bull**** floating around.
Infact, coming from the HD2 to the X10, the HD2 is much more unusable than the X10. The X10 is FAR FAR more responsive than any WinMo device

I agree, I came from HD2 to Desire ( for 3 weeks), and now to X10
Desire was a great phone , but lacked that wow factor, was a little bit too boring in design ( personal choice of course)
Reason I want back to the X10 was the screen size, I found the Desire too small.
When we get 2.1 or 2.2 on this phone, it will be the best around, so we need to pray for root as soon as possible. But as usual, in 3 months, there will be something newer out there.
I want to tell you my story : I had the same experience with SE X1 so I was looking for another choice, first thing I decided NO MORE WM , X1 was my first and last windows mobile . I read about Android but never try, I was looking on the net, reading reviews and previews , I found out that the Desire would be the best, but its design was boring not like the fascinating X10.
X10 is the first SE Android experience because of that there might be some bugs, but now after one month using it I can tell you two words GO AHEAD .... that exactly the device which I was looking for, changing from X1 to X10 is like from hell to heaven .
I think a lot of great things will come soon : X10 will be rooted then it will get Android 2.1 (in Q4 2010)
P.S: as an Arabic user I am suffering that the device doesn't support my language, but it's still my favorite

No, that's not true. There's always an over representation of people who have problems on forums! And to tell you the truth, I have no problems at all with my phone. Bug free and lightning fast with the latest update. Mind you that I never use Timescape or Mediascape, but that's me! And the Desire has bugs too.
Hmmm didnt you started a similar thread before?
If you i had given you my opinion there. In short x10 is not a bad phone. If your expectation is high then you're likey to get dissapointed. Desire is a better option. But not the best looking phone imo.
And dont let timescape and medisca
pe affect your decision they are hardly useful
You are right. We cannot habe arabic without rooting so. It is one of biggest problems I had faced

Why is the Desire a better option? Because it has Android 2.1? Or is it because it displays gray colors as pink? Or maybe because it is unusable in the sun? Or maybe its the poor reception it receives or crappy pictures it takes? The desire has plenty of negatives that people are writing about all over the place, but it's still a GREAT phone. For my money I prefer the X10, some people will prefer the Desire, and that's fine, but my expectations were extremely high with the X10 and it has met every one of them, it's a fantastic phone.

Agreed, i had my x10 for a day and its been excellent.
I've had a few niggles with the phone, but nothing major.. I love it, such a great bit of kit.. fast, responsive, clear picture, generally very good ui.. have persevered with Mediascape and quite like it now.. just occasionally use the default mail app to make playlist (which irritatingly can't do in mediascape.. )
managing to get a full day out of the battery now too, and that's with quite a bit of use..
so.. onto OS/ firmware - They've already released a couple of minor build changes.. and another bigger one coming out in the next week or so.. then Android 2.1 (probably not 2.2 or later) in Q4 this year.. I'm not bothered about MT, but then I'm not a big gamer.... all things considered though. A1.6 is pretty damned good anyway.. (my missus has a HTC legend which is great.. but I still prefer my X10..!!
I too came from an X1 to an X10, and couldn't be happier. Even with the X1 modded with an HTC interface, this phone is so much more enjoyable to use. Such a smooth and responsive user experience compared to that one.
My friend has a Desire btw, and on the same network, on the same physical spot, my X10 has better signal reception and higher download speeds. Plus, for some reason the X10 both starts and shuts down WAY faster. So the Desire isn't all that much more desireable in my experience.

Sorry for being blunt, i was actually reading this thread on the phone and couldnt type long.
Our hesitating friend here is looking for something that he/she can show off. No doubt both phones are good looking physically and GUI wise. And the X10 suit my taste more.
However you have to admit the animation on the phone is just questionable. There are noticeable minor lags. The most obvious is when you hold your thumb on the home screen to change wallpapers, the window jerks open. Such a simple animation and yet it cant be done nicely on a 1ghz cpu. Hence I dare to say the desire does a better job at this. The animations are so fluid its almost on par with the iphone. You might say i'm being picky, i admit that, thats prob because my expectation was even more higher than yours.
Look nocturnal, both phones have good and bad points, it all depends on what features both phones offer matter to you most, and what are the bad points you can ignore. I'm a pessimist, I like my things by accepting their cons. Im also a X1 user as I mentioned in your earlier thread. Upgrading from that piece of junk to X10 is definitely a huge leap. I maybe complaining about the smallest details i can find on X10, but that does not mean Im not happy with the phone. I know iphone is the only phone(according to my experience) that can do the most fluid GUI, (HTC second) but can i live with no-multitasking, apple being a control freak etc etc? No
I'd give X10 a 8/10, X1 a 2/10.
Pass
I have only purchased SE phones for the past seven years. My last three were the p900a, p910i, and currently I own the x1i. Prior to SE I only purchased Motorola. When the X10 came out I decided to purchase but also wanted to wait to see want x10 owners were saying. I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for enough positives to go ahead a take the x10 plunge. I have learned the hard way that SE gets great hardware out there and is slow to get the software side up and running appropriately, but that is not a deal breaker by itself.
After waiting for several issues to be resolved before purchasing and reading the volume of issues, I have finally decided to give the x10 a pass all together. No, I will wait for the issues facing the x10 to be worked out in the next SE. Like maybe the GX1! That will be sweet when/if it arrives to market.
The reason I have decided to wait: Unlike the p900, p910, and x1, the x10's issues are too involved with the reasons I would buy this ppc.
1) I prefer a hard keyboard and the with the issues facing the on-screen keyboard, the rest of the phone would really have to be superstar to over come this issue for me. Not a deal breaker by itself.
2) Timescape lags, contact photo not clean, issues with google email and facebook functionality, plus doesn't sync'n well and, lack of thoughtfulness with the controls.
3) Battery life is not optimised for the X10's performance. Not a deal breaker
4) Flash 10.1 not released yet and it is not yet known what issues will arise with working on the X10. Current flash players isn't really a proper flash player and video hangs at 50% complete. Issue for me
5) Running 1.6 and given SE track record the phone will get one up date to possibly the 2.1 in NOVEMBER. And, after that x10 owners will be on their own. Plus spring will be the launch of SE's next product. For me this is the biggest issue.
6) Suspicious that the screen protector that is included and shipped attached is really covering up a more serious issue with the actual screen itself. I do not see this as SE being thoughtful. Other wise why not just put it in the box and let the user decide? Some markets even got two screen protectors. One attached and second one to attach at a later time. It smells an awful lot like a screen manufacturing problem to me. Time will tell. But still an issue for me.
These are just a few off the top of my head. None are really deal breakers by themselves, and I know some will be addressed in June with an update and the others will be fixed in November. But why so long? Way too long if SE expects to keep me as a continued long term customers who always buys their flagship products. I also know that some will never be fixed. I would rather wait for the X20 with it's improvements and fixes to the issues facing the X10. Because I know there will not be enough changes to justify trading up from the X10 to the X20 should I buy now. I made that mistake with jumping from the p900 to the p910.
Here is what I would like to see SE and Google under the same roof. This would truly be an international success story. Ericsson's connectivity, Sony's ground breaking portable hardware, Googles OS, and purchase a forth company (purely software) to bring the apps into the 21st century. SE needs to buy a major software developer right now. SE's issues are always related to software and it that take too frick'n long to fix, if they get fixed at all. And, if you decide to get the fix yourself you void your warranty and can't get auto updates any more. Insane!
So unless something seriously ground breaking happens with this X10 I will hold on to my X1 a bit longer.

SE needs to buy a major software developer right now. SE's issues are always related to software and it that take too frick'n long to fix, if they get fixed at all. And, if you decide to get the fix yourself you void your warranty and can't get auto updates any more. Insane!
So unless something seriously ground breaking happens with this X10 I will hold on to my X1 a bit longer.

you said it all
fm1776, none of those are issues to me especially no. 2 which I completely disagree with, no. 3 is also not the case with my phone, and the Android 1.6 being upgraded late this year ignores the fact that SE allows you to do the same and more that any Nexus 2.1 phone can do. Certainly a hard keyboard, if that is what you require, makes the x10 not the right phone for you. I am kind of shocked that you had the x1 but have passed on the x10 though, it is night and day between these phones, a lightyear leap, really.
the X10 reminds me a lot of the PS3. when the PS3 came out, it was dissed left and right. fans lost faith.
look what happened now? PS3 is killing it. and it too had to get firmware updates. and after some major updates, it was rockin'
i feel almost the same about the X10 as i did when i purchased a PS3 and my friends clowned me for it. now, it's not a laughing matter.
X10 IS getting 2.1 and that is a fact (for now) and i think if SE gives us what we want, it will be a win-win sooner or later.
so far the phone is a let down for me personally.
i don't hate it. patience and time will tell about how i feel about the phone when it's all said and done.
but as a phone, it doesn't do the 'phone' particularly well at this stage. low call volumes, along with a vibration that you can't really feel and a battery life that you can not really depend on is something really bugs me.
This is not a thread to bash or degrade the X10 at all in any way. I really like my X10 it's a great phone, I enjoy using it. Problem is my wife does as well.
So I gave her the phone because she need a good camera and something to watch movies etc with while on vacation.
So now I'm back with my rooted/hacked Magic which I like but not so much after using the X10. I was going to just buy another but wanted to be sure first, so to my question.
Anyone that has tried a different phone and moved to a X10 or has dropped the X10 for a different phone, whats the closest competitor or upgrade?
It has to be usable on Rogers 3g and can't be an Iphone, I will never own an apple product so that shouldn't be a debate.
Thanks for any feedback just want some options, maybe I already have the best one out there.
I would buy it again, I've even turned down an offer to trade mine in for a Desire. Only way I'd switch would be if there was a bigger Snapdragon version of the Legend available.

X10 all the way
I would buy it again too. I just love the design, the camera, Mediascape and the screen. However I would be really tempted between the X10 and Galaxy S. The Galaxy S has an even better screen then our X10. However the Galaxy sucks design wise, I mean, it's just like an iFart 3G(S), even the menu looks the same. The Galaxy S feels a lot faster though. It just flies through all the different menus and screens.
So if you like me love the design, camera and Mediascape of the X10 , then buy it again. Otherwise I would take a good look at the Galaxy S.
X10 it is a wonderful phone, but this delay about android 2.1 and froyo annoys me...
I was looking through the specs on the Galaxy-S. Actually thought it would be a pretty nice phone till I actually saw it. And the fact it has a AMOLED screen, they seem blurry to me and way over saturated.
How does the Nexus compare, can't seem to see anything else that compares to the X10.
I will only exchange my X10 for a Droid X or dell Streak.
Droid X becuase it has similar specs (camera and bigger screen) and good firmware support. Dell Streak for the screen size and possibly 2.2 very soon.
But love my X10 for its camera, screen, Mediascape, Dialler, TrackID and lack of firmware update. You just cant beat that.

Thanks yes that was the other one I was thinking about just couldn't remember. The Droid X looks very nice, not big on the hardware keyboard but the rest of the specs look wicked and the looks itself I don't mind king of industrial. But I don't see that they have one for Rogers 3G bands (same as AT&T) It would be right on the top of my list if they have one that will work Rogers. Streak it very nice but getting into tablet size IMO.
I would buy it again.
I can overlook the 2.1 delay and no 2.2 in the near future.
I'm enjoying my first taste of Android.
The media capabilities are nice, video & audio are clear and smooth.
The processor is extremely quick.
I like the large screen.
I don't need a hardware keyboard.
It is less practical than winmo, but more entertainment oriented.
The camera is excellent.
I think you should wait a couple weeks and see what happens with flashing CM6 on the X10, if things go well then I'd go for another one for sure, otherwise choose something else.
Having said that, if you can't wait an additional few months lol, buy the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Captivate...geeze mouthful or HTC Desire (which Telus will have in stock real soon and I think will work on Rogers 3G??) still imho one of, if not THE best phones on the market. And come October/November there will be even more great choices on the market...patience is a virtue

Exactly the same sentiments as me. I just wanted an android phone and my carrier only offered X10 at a discounted rate. But I am extremely pleased. Plus it makes my blackberry friends jealous since they try to talk crap about my phone to make themselves feel better.
I would yes, as it's a beautiful piece of equipment, and will happily sit out the wait for 2.1, and who knows, maybe sometime later the devs on here will get 2.2 on it.
4 months ago... yes
today no... i would wait for September or even Christmas.
Yes.....after de-applefying myself from my old Iphone, i love this new bit of Kit. Sure ths OS isnt current and the battery is a little needy. But the hardware/software relationship is great and the device its self is fantastic.
I love my X10
Rooted already, tethering done, since root my batter goes x2 time , great thanks to xda people.
Screen is so great.
Well a lot of things, maybe the Froyo not support is the only thing I miss here, but I'm patient about it
As far as I'm concerned its the best android phone out there, I've tried the nexus one, milestone and the HTC legend and the x10 was the best when it came to reception and battery life. I just wish it came with 2.1 at the very least. I'm on my 3rd x10 btw, I keep going back to it
Thanks for all the opinions guys. Yeah I'm a fan since I bought it that's why it's hard to figure if I want another one or try out the latest and greatest.
Not new to Android I've had a Magic since the day they came to Canada I love to OS no selling me on that. Battery is a none issue I charge every night regardless, had to do it with my Magic as well. (heavy user)
So far I think the only one that looks to be able to grab my attention from the X10 would be the Droid X if I can find one that uses Rogers 3G bands.

I can't seem to find anything up and coming that would make me wait. Any info on what you think would be worth the wait. I'm not in a huge hurry, but now that I've used the X10 it's hard to use the little Magic again.
I just did as I moved from T-mobile to AT&T. Had X10i in white for a long while now and then purchase X10a in Black. I didn't like the Black X10 as much as the white one. So, purchased a White X10a. Yesterday, I went to AT&T store and played with Samsung Captivate and have to tell you I like my X10a even more. SE came up with a design that can't be beaten for a long while. I wonder how much better can SE do with their X10 upgrade.
Some things they can do to make X10 upgrade even more sexy:
1. Little sleeker or keep same size but fit in bigger and better battery.
2. Sony Ericsson logo on top or Xperia logo at bottom to act like Notification light (battery drainer?)
3. 4 buttons
4. A Glossy Premium Carbon metal body (like Z series Vaio) for the front side.
absolutely i never buy sonyericsson device one more time!
i have just not really happy with T68 (some years ago..) and p900i.
i try SE X10 for the top class hw feature, but i have to admit that this "phone" is not very usefull for me.
battery life is a huge problem.
the touchscreen some time is not responding fine.
the sound quality and volume level is not sufficient (i have Nokia N95-1, is tremendous louder compared to x10 !!) , that's absolutely NOT acceptable from a brand wich contain the word "sony" on his brandname.
plus, the lag of the official software development on this phone.
if this is the top-class device from SE, it must deserve a top-class development , i think
sorry for too many words, but i'm really disappointed with this phone.
I Would yes,
I love the phone , i love the design , x10 feels like a classy phone with very elegant design.
I am very satisfied with the latest updates , my battery life holds more than enough.
And i love the freaking screen !!!
I cant wait to run 2.1
Cheers
I have fallen in love with the X10 since it was leaked last year. Its the only phone I think the ui is sexy. I have a mytouch slide I like it but wouldn't mind an X10 for a while. I have dug thru the forums for this phone and I see it has some issues and I don't see any roms for it yet. Since I'm on tmo usa I will have to wait for a unlocked phone to come about. My questions are:
how is the performance?
Are there really that many issues or are a few select people having problems?
And are there any devs on working on this phone?
I know the update to 2.1 is taking awhile cause the ui and I don't expect sony to give it froyo but maybe some dev will. Thanks guys.

yes there are issues with X10 now but you can wait until update, at present it has 1.6 android which is out of date buit soon sony Xperia X10 is getting 2.1
you should wait until then and if you can not wait then its better to go for motorola droid x or desire they both are good phones with good screens, multitouch ( for games etc ) and good call volumes latest android

Frankly speaking X10 is not as good as it was 2 months back........back then there were no option, now you have better alternatives.....starting with Galaxy s,Droid 2 ,Droid X and whole lot lot of bunch
P.S If you really want to stand out from the crowd get a White X10
Every phone with its weakness, X10 with low call volume(ok for me),1.6 OS, no MT(not needed for me),but the others have their issue too just like the Samsung Galaxy with the GPS signal(losing it).
So if you can live with the X10's so called ''problems'' it is a great device,if not then buy something else.
Can't say the other phone doesn't have issue either.
everything have feature that other phone doesn't. I personally don't see xperia 10 is behind on other phones because it is using a personalized android 1.6 vs 2.2 which have nothing desirable for me.
the 3 major feature you will miss are
720 recording - which i am sure you can live without it.
16 million colour - once again, my eyes can't tell the differences. that well to even brother.
flash - xperia 10 can watch flash enable media ( can watch flash movie @ tudou.com) but can't use them (as menu or web content) with skyfire.
i have no idea why that akshay insist it have low call volumne, i think his phone is busted or he got 1 of those millionth faulty one. I personally have no problem calling out or hearing people talks on my phone unless i am in an heavy noisy area that i can't even hear someone shout @ 1M away.
There are app that can hack your speaker i think if you rooted on the market.
Mind you, if you compare the latest phone you will only found them having
1. 2.1 or 2.2 soon
2. a front camera for video conference, (i live in canada, no one use smart phone with front camera here)
3. larger screen by 0.1 inch
4. 16 million color but worser camera.
5. If you didn't know 90% of those phone can't use under bright sun, but guess what, Xperia 10 CAN.
6. they are all "black", but mine is WHITE and have great design http://seinsider.com/?p=2525 If i will find a way to get one of those later and show off.
7. I like sony, i like having a sony brivia x2, sony ps3, a sony BR, a sony dog, and ...no i don't like sony laptops.
If you are like me that like the design and the white X10 when I first saw the pics of it last November, then I say, go for it. When it came out of the market last March, I said to myself, I'll wait for it to get the latest Android 2.1 and buy it. Big Mistake! I was not satisfied with the other phone that I bought, so after three months of using that phone, I got bored with it, and finally bought X10. Now, I'm using the X10 only, and only once in a while, use the other one. I can never be happier...
Thanks for all the replies. Glad to see people are happy with the phone. 1.6 is not a deal breaker for me. And yes if I buy one definitely the white one has my eye. I can careless for froyo cause I had froyo on my mytouch slide. Nothing I won't miss. I think I will head to a at&t store and play with one. Thanks for the link awesome shells. Anymore thoughts are welcomed.

I have the White X10i, its been great for me so far! The battery life is really good, the camera is awesome and the interface is a pleasure to use!
In regards to the 2.1 update that we are all longing after so much, the only thing I would really embrace with open arms is the ability to record video in 720p!.
just fyi in case you missed it, the X10i has 3G banding for T-Mobile, and the X10a has the banding for AT&T. Also I thought AT&T is only selling the black version? So from what I understand you want, you should buy an unlocked white X10i off the net.
X10 is great, best looking phone on the market and best camera in an Android phone. Screen resolution is awesome, videos etc are not as vibrant as AMOLED or Super AMOLED screen sure, but text is sharper and being usable in sunlight is a huge plus. For Canadians I think it's the best overall Android option still, you guys have a lot more choices down south and I can't say the same. Froyo is huge regardless of your experience, SE has done a lot to make 1.6 good, but it's shoddy customization isn't enough at this point in the game compared to all the 2.2 offerings on the market now.
If I were you I would wait a few more weeks until you know what that big HSPA+ device for T-Mo is before making any big purchases

I love mine -it's the dogs cogs.. There's 1Gb of Memory but it's use is restricted by Android 1.6.. so at the moment it's using... Download Cache - 111Mb; Data - 465Mb; RAM - 268Mb. (reading directly from Android System Info app)
Youre better off buying an unlock iphone or waits for the sony ericsson psp2 because the x10 is rather slow and no brand name app.

With gadgetry it's unpossible to form an opinion just by reading specs and reviews. When you look at the specs of the X10 it's a good phone, when you look at the software versions it's a poor phone. But the most important part, the feel, you'll have to find out yourself.
When I replaced my iPhone with my X10 I was a "smart shopper" and tried out many different devices, usually I just grab what looks cool. My favourites were the X10, Touch HD2 (I know, but I liked the hardware) and the Desire. The Touch HD2 fell out of the running pretty quickly since it runs WinMo and I wanted Android.
The Desire is a really nice phone, it's got good hardware and it runs Android but it had a few problems. First off the screen is pretty poor. The colours are great but it's way too fuzzy for my taste. The general solidity, or feel, was also pretty bad. It's feels too plastic and cheap for my taste.
The X10 felt slightly sluggish and bogged down, but since it's software I figured I could fix that pretty easily which I did. The Android version worried me at first but some investigation turned up that the differences between this custom 1.6 and the HTC version of 2.0 were pretty minimal. In the end I went for the X10 because it has a way better screen, it has a more solid feel to it and a pretty nice camera.
This was a few months ago but no new phones have really caught my eye, most look too non-descript or iPhone-like for my taste.
There's my reasoning, hope it helps.

Please vote and post why you like your x10
And if you could have any phone right now other than x10 what would it be?
I own a Sensuous Black Xperia X10i and its one of the best phones out there. Though it has Android 1.6, it offers everything i want. It looks cool, works well, i get a good battery life. Am very satisfied with the phone
Yes,
Because I bought it! It has the design factor I am looking for, its android and its white and its Sony + its a perfect size, not too big like HD2 and not too small like iphone. It fits in hand really nicely. Since I like tech, I wished it had the most updated android as well but I will wait.
VERY happy with my X10!!! I sold my Nexus One running 2.2 for it. Never once did I look back and say "damn, why did I do that". Although the X10 is only running 1.6 it does a damn good job at it. The phone is sexy as hell, far better looking than alot of others out there imo anyway...and when 2.1 hits its gonna be SWEET!!!!
ps. I was all hyped about 2.2 when I had my nexus, when I got it ota I was very disapointed! all the hype for absolutly NO difference in my opinion....a couple extra useless options and did not notice any speed difference...so with the X10 just dropping 2.1 im totally cool with it.
No I am not happy with the Xperia x10 (I have the black one)
It looks cool as all hell, and has a nice display, but these problems are quite upsetting:
1. So sign of multi touch ever (Its important to me, dont care is anyone else cares or not)
2. I can hear people fine, though a bit quiet, but other can't hear me sometimes.
3. Typing on it is hard.
4. Screen collects fingerprints and does not have an oil resistant coating.
I find the phone runs fast, smooth. And I love the camera, but I can't put up with these issues.
Hope that someone accepts my offer to trade me either an iphone 3gs or 4

Typing on any touchscreen is a bit of a challenge with a full QWERTY keyboard - but withAndroid (even 1.6 ) you can install a plethora of other input options (ie. Swype, which is faster and easiter than anything ever.)

Yup was totally disappointed with the N1 the X10 is much better IMO. All the hype with 2.2 is overblown. On the N1 I didn't see the dramatic speed improvements. I don't even know what Google was thinking releasing Activesync support in the half broken state they did, at least in terms of corp. email support. I am curious to see how much faster the X10 will be with 2.1 on it.

Yeah I installed the HTC keyboard and it was better. I honestly think that the lack of MT is causing me issues. I can type with my wives iphone 3GS no problem and I think its because I am a very fast texter, hell I text faster than I type! I think I end up hitting multiple keys with the x10 causing the errors.

No.
Bought it when the multi-touch announcement came about, was on the fence until that. Was later greeted by the fact that it lacks it from a hardware standpoint, after spending my $600. Thought it was alright, could live without it. Grew more and more annoyed with laggy software, and then the straw that broke the camel's back was that I started having random restarts.
My phone is now un-usable if there is a sim card inside (will restart on boot), and is waiting to be shipped out to SE for repair.
What phone would I get if I had the option? Probably the EVO 4G or the Iphone 4.
NO
i got SE X10 white
i admit its sexy as hell
but
1- in call volume is very low , i barely can hear people when im walkin in the streets
2- lack of MT
3- low amount of RAM unlinke nexus
4- it lags alot of times
YES.
I bought the phone the day it came out and it set me back bought 700$. Coming from an iPhone that wasn't jailbroken before ios having an x10 was a whole new view on freedom. It was first laggy at first, but after debrand, rooting, new software, etc. I'm starting to like this phone a lot. Only lags on lock screen.
Browsing is great on the huge screen and typing on the horizontal keyboard isn't awkward like the iPhone. Tactile feedback is great too. The only thing ill probably ***** about is no multitouch. Can't play fps games like on iPhone. But its only games.
Writing reports on the phone in documents to go is great too.

Like the phone so much. I learn something new everyday. White has a killer looks. One guy who owns a 3GS told me after playing with my phone for your few minutes and after I shown him the demo movie that was on the phone, that he's going to buy one. Android Market is great, whatever you want your phone to do, there's an application in the Market that will make it happen...
I have the Sensuous Black too, and love it!
It's a Sony Ericsson, it's touch-screen, it's Android & it's a beautiful piece of equipment, and even if it wasn't getting an O.S upgrade would have still bought it. 1.6 gives me everything I need, so the upgrade is going to be nothing more than a bonus for me.
Yup, love mine with exception of bluetooth not working with my car kit. 9/10

Being my first Android phone, I can say that I'm having fun playing around with it, and its non-iPhone-like looks allows it to stand out from the crowd. Somehow, I'm having regrets on buying it, but I think I would probably still feel some regrets if I had gotten a Nexus One or Galaxy S (btw Galaxy S was available to me at $0, as was the X10). I guess I'm just not ready for the Android platform, as I still feel that it's much easier to make phone calls on a Symbian(Nokia) phone. Also, the lack of Ovi Maps and PuTTy on my new phone leaves much to be desired. Connectbot just doesn't cut it, as lots of page switching is required when using it with Full Keyboard. Not exactly the kind of hassle a VIM user would expect.
My other gripes with the X10 are probably the common ones mentioned throughout the X10 community, like the outdated OS, MT, yada yada. Still, I'd give anything to own an Android phone which doesn't look like the iPhone.
Edit: Hah, this is funny. About 30 minutes after I posted this message, I received an update notification about Connectbot. Turns out the new update allows me to send Ctrl and Esc without having to use Full Keyboard, so I'm all good with VIM now
i voted no because i got the phone the first month it was relased. so i just used it for one month and the phone died :'( from april till now trying to find a solution :'( wish it comes back to life some day... now im really thinking about getting an x10min pro and move on with my life right now just using the crazy wild x1

Where did you get it from?
EDIT: Just bumped one of your posts.
Maybe.
Why?
Because at the moment I don't have Wi Fi or a data plan, so I don't know the full features of the phone. I'm in a new country before school has started, so no contacts because I haven't made friends yet. So really, there is not much use for me except listening to a few songs and watching podcasts.
I personally like Apple's iTunes store to get applications and to easily transfer media to your device. There is no such online store for Android. It makes my life harder because you are forced to use an internet connection on your phone to get apps.
It also sucks that you can't make your computer internet connection (wired) into a wireless one for your phone to use. You can do the reverse, tethering, but no reverse-tethering.
Plus the battery life is concerning me. I'm forced to uninstall applications that I may use later on for a better battery life. My iPod touch has better battery life than the SE Xperia X10.
I'll just have to see after I get my Wi Fi working. At the moment I rarely even use my phone. Hopefully it turns into a miracle.
Hi! I'm thinking about the X10, just wondering if anyone can offer some advice. Some background: I had HTC aria, specs aren't as high-end as other droid phones, but it worked extremely well -- email, GPS, music player, and interface was great. No issues whatsoever, except the camera wasn't so great. I cracked the screen and decided to go for the Samsung Captivate. The specs on the Captivate are great, camera is great, but basically nothing works with it: GPS takes 30 seconds to 1 minute to lock, it loses lock, email crashes, interface is nothing compared to HTC, wi-fi connects but sometimes doesn't work.... Great hardware, but everything is buggy. So I will return it and pick out another phone. Are you satisfied with the X10? what could be improved? What is great about it? I'd really appreciate it, thanks a lot.
Get a galaxy s.

X10 is a great phone, but SE needs to step up there game! If anything, I'd suggest you go for a phone with company that has much more experience with the Android software...
ATM there are many bugs with the current android build (1.6) and it is outdated, but within the week, there should be a 2.1 update, which should definitly boost the performance of the phone.
The main thing I know many people look for is multitouch. Recently there has been some discussion on if the phone has MT or not, and a few videos showing it, but so far no one (no one publicly) has shown how to unlock the MT feature on the phone.
x10 has a beautiful big screen, but it doesnt support 16m colours
But, I don't think its a big deal.
Overall, the phone is good, but it has the potential to be so much more better; only if SE allows it, I mean...
If I could recommend a phone, I'd say the HTC Desire HD. (thing that sucks about HTC is that they always have so many phones coming out, so there's a chance it might get outdated quick).

Anyway X10 is pretty good but I'd buy a Desire HD instead.
Think twice before you buy X10. The phone itself isn't bad, but the product is not all - support given by its manufacturer matters too - and as you can see (just hop around X10 XDA's board), SE doesn't do the job very well. I'd go for HTC.
The X10 is probably the most beautiful phone out there right now and the 2.1 update which is about to be released should give it a new lease of life... if you want to be able to root your phone for custom ROM's don't get the X10.. the 1.6 bootloader hasn't been cracked yet, and SE will no doubt have made it even harder in the 2.1 iteration..
Multitouch may be possible.. video's on you tube recently suggest it is.. but TBC!!.. 16m colours doesn't really make a great deal of difference to most.. but could be delivered in the next update (not the one that's about to be released.. the one after).
All in all it's a great bit of kit but has been held back by 1.6.
Great phone, beautify software and outdated android OS. Two months after the 2.1 update, 2.1 will be outdated and people will start complaining again.
If you care about getting the last android OS or Multitouch, don't consider this phone(and i suggest going with HTC for this matter).
Anyway i kinda like my X10. I think it's a great phone, and i also think SE have leaned the lesson and they will do their job on the next update.
The X10 is certainly not perfect. It is currently on Android 1.6 but the update to 2.1 will begin anyday now.
Now, let's compare a couple of things that, for me anyway, make the X10 standout. First, the style and build quality are outstanding. The physical buttons are also a nice plus. Second, and more importantly, the X10 is the only Android device that comes with a full end-to-end syncing solution that works with playlists and is simple to use. You only have to install MediaGo on your PC, nothing needs to be installed on the phone. This is something very lacking on other Android devices. Yes, there are third party solutions, but none of them work as well as MediaGo does (IMO).
Keeping that in mind, and that 2.1 apps will be possible within the next month, the X10 actually does have a lot to offer. Also, if GPS is important to you, the X10 has the best GPS I have ever personally tested. I work in the third floor of an office building. This floor is designed to be a storm shelter (in Florida, flooding and wind are what you protect against). It is 100% encased in cement. I can get a GPS lock inside the building. Yes, GPS lock, 3G radio and WiFi off, and I get a GPS lock. That is amazing to everyone I have shown it to.
Yes, the X10 gets a quick GPS lock everywhere.

ive wrote on x10 pros and cons , also compared to iphone's pros and cons, there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8859013&postcount=171
(if you want cheapest 1ghz 4" HD screen on a phone - buy x10. if you have more money, check for other phones, like htc desire, Z, HD, samsung galaxy. )
How can you recommended Galaxy S when this guy already has it (Captivate is the AT&T variant of the phone) and is looking to make the switch to another phone?
The x10 is not for you. You found faults and lost patients with possibly the best phone on the market (the galaxy S) and I understand those issues would make anyone think twice but the truth is Samsung will iron out those issues with software updates within weeks or days. SE have no plans to upgrade the x10 to 2.2 which is all kinds of bad.
Buying any other phone will at least mean you are able to enjoy more up to date apps and features that are out now rather than simply watching everyone else enjoying the innovations developers or Google them selves launch.
I'm past putting SE down, its a really simple choice to make.
There are apps currently on the market that will only work on android 2.2 and while other users with HTC Hero's enjoy at least testing out what flash is like the x10 users like myself will have to wait until we change our phone at the end of our contract or save up and buy an HTC Desire HD.

I am sorry to tell you but I did exactly that. I had a Captivate for 28 days. The faulty GPS, and myriad of other stability issues, did not make up for the screen and GPU on the Galaxy S devices.
The GPS issue has been around for many months, with no resolution in sight. There are people with the official 2.2 and still no GPS fix. It's beginning to look like there is no fix. Also, the Galaxy S updates have been very slow too. I am fairly certain that is due, in large part, to the stupid proprietary file system Samsung chose. If you must have the latest OS, then I would suggest getting an HTC device. The Galaxy S devices are nowhere near what they should be, based solely on specs.
Well.. X10 is very good at social networking for twitter and facebook. plus browsing emails is nice and easy. Even though it had 1.6 OS but it is a very stable considering the outdated OS ( at least my X10 is ). And the INFINITY button is very usable you cannot find that in any other android, one click and all the information regarding a video, contact, picture or music is in you hands
but true, if you want the latest OS you should go with HTC Desire HD or wait for the 4G
if you want something unique in terms of UI then X10 is the one
I'm currently considering the opposite path from X10i to Galaxy S myself.
IMHO the suitability of whether you should get the X10 depends on the personality of the user. The X10 is more suited to those that are less technical and I think the Galaxy S is suitable to those who are more technically competent and know how to apply the fixes to the minor problems.
Here are the pros and cons I'm looking at for the X10 vs Galaxy S:
X10:
Pros:
Screen works in sunlight, Nice applications that come with the phone like Mediascape/BackupRestore, Physical hardware buttons (Physical buttons supposedly last longer, nice physical design, Nice camera(not great but nice)
Cons:
Awful support from Sony Ericsson, Android 1.6 (equals much less choice of applications although 2.1 is coming, we are still behind), Multitouch disabled by Sony Ericsson, no decent custom ROM from XDA (futureproofing is uncertain)
Galaxy S:
Pros:
Beautiful screen, Faster hardware, better multitouch, currently has XDA dev custom roms (means it can be more future proof)
Cons:
Screen somewhat works in Sunlight, Less awful support from Samsung, Terrible support if you're using a Galaxy S variant (You can't expect much from your carrier), phone is kind of ugly, some lag and GPS problems (You can get it fixed if you configure it properly and apply the fixes from XDA)

I did recall mentioning other phones than the Galaxy S but thank you for filling us in on the issues you had as I wouldn't want someone to blindly grab a Galaxy S not knowing that it possibly has an hardware issue. I had heard a few things about the GPS issue but the two geeks I work with who have Galaxy S's have bigger smiles than the two x10 owners in the office.
That said in the UK if you have hardware issues and there is a hardware revision because of this issues there are still options for you to get that revised hardware for free but I think SE have proved that if the phone OS locked down and the issues are software based your options are less.
Given the choice between GPS & multi touch I'll choose multi touch every time. I can simple look around to know where I am or get real old school and right down directions like I used to ten years ago or better still go and buy a GPS unit and connect via Bluetooth.
I might be able to buy a Wii remote to play games (which I'm going to do today) but that doesn't really replace Multi touch.

I really don't think x10 is a good phone.
Let me say what i do like about it.
Great camera & best onboard keyboard i have used(i have big fingers).
Good sync software (PC access to files).
This is my spare phone, i got it when i resigned my contract as they don't sell HD2's here in NZ. It may be that i am really happy with windows mobile, but i just don't get android. I must say i am a business user (tool not toy).
The screen scratches (need glass not plastic)
charging port at the top? - not practical for vehicle use with holder.
ok thats my 2 cents worth
