does the phone automatically switches over to wifi or does it continue to stay on the 3G network??
It seems like it switches to wifi mode but can anyone confirm?
sorry for the noob question. This is my first android device and i absolutely love it!!!!
It switches over to WIFI and disables 3G/E if it connected to a network. If it's not connected to a network, then 3G/E will take over.
thanks!
might as well ask another question here instead of starting a new thread.....
how do i view "street view" on google maps? I looked everywhere but didn't see that option
open maps, press and hold the place you want street view, it will load an address tap the address and then tap the street view icon on the right hand side :]
Thanks a lo!
just tried the compass mode and damn all that talk about the compass being broke is really true! I hope they come up with a fix soon...
Going back to the original question... I've noticed when I hit my power button to use the phone, it has often switched itself back to 3G. This is with the phone within a foot or two of the same place it was on WiFi earlier -- and then after 20 or 30 seconds it'll switch back to WiFi.
Actually, sometimes when I power it up, it shows Edge, then briefly flickers to 3G then goes back to WiFi.
Thought this was a little weird. Mainly it interests me because I've read that WiFi is the least power-hungry option, so I wouldn't be too happy if it switches back to 2G or 3G when the screen shuts down...
Anybody else seen this or know how to correct it?

Lately, I've been having an issue where if I go into an area with no service (or at least I think I have no service) I never get service again, even when I'm in areas where I know I have strong service. Sometimes if I go into airplane mode and back, it comes back, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes when this happens, and I turn on airplane mode and turn it off again, the phone shuts itself off and I have to manually power it back on.
Anyone have this issue, or know what could be going on?

I have this same issue myself. Dunno what it is and wasn't able to fix it either. You can look through my comments to find an identicle thread I started a couple of days ago on this same issue titled "Data connection issue" to see if it helps.
I'll have airplane mode on for awhile but when I finally turn it off I get 3g data showing in the status bar but only one of the arrow's will light up if I try to use the browser and eventually sputters out. Same thing would happen with the Quicksettings app when I would turn off the apn data toggle for awhile, when I turn it back on there is no real data connection even though the 3g is showing...
I've tried the whole thing about pressing the #4#... etc to turn off the radio and turn it back on again but nothing works for me. I wish someone knew how to fix this
mine does the same thing. the only thing that works for me is turning it off and back on again. such a PITA.
mine does it also
I fixed my similar 3g problem by (re)flashing the radio from recovery.

same problem i just restart
same problem sometimes...i just switch airplane mode on and off and it usually fixes
Old bug: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2845
I'm hoping that Froyo finally brings a fix for this (and full Exchange calendar), or it's Craigslistville for my N1.

This or a restart will always fix the problem when this happens to me.

I have that radio flashed but in place of the U, mine has an H... whats the difference?
I'm crossing my fingers that this'll be remedied in the update..

Here is a post I have put up on the vodafone.IE support forum this afternoon.
http://forum.vodafone.ie/index.php?/topic/5898-samsung-galaxy-s-gps-issue/
I figured I would post here too - as maybe this will give some of you serious android programmers a clue as to where to find the issue with GPS
___________________________________________
I have experienced issues with the Galaxy S (2 weeks old - with the KIES Android 2.2 update loaded) doing Navigation,
I decided to download the FREE VERSION of application "GPS Status & Toolbox" from the Android Market to see what king of signal quality the phone was getting. The results were more than a little surprising.
The application will need GPS turned on. I turned off the "Wireless Networks" location services to make sure it was not contributing to the problem.
When you start the application, go to Menu->Settings->Display & Tools-> and select "Keep the screen on" so you can watch the satellite signals.
Now, return to the main screen, and allow the phone to pick up satellite signals. At the bottom right of the compass window it shows Fix/Sats with numbers indicating how many Satellites it has found, and how many it has managed to fix on a signal from. And, just below that there is a line of signal strength bars all the way across the screen.
Once you get enough good fixes, the signal strength bars for the fixed signals will turn green, and the phone will update your position below the compass.
Now for the fun bit....
The FREE version of this phone displays (some dubious) ads at the bottom of the screen. If you click on any one of them, it will launch an Internet Browser session over the top of the application. Immediately press the BACK button to cancel the Internet Browser, and return to watching your satellite signals. Notice that the MENU and BACK buttons will have lit up as the browser started, and will still be lit.
After approximately 3 seconds, watch the MENU and BACK buttons light go out, and at the same instant, the signal from ALL satellites will drop completely, and the phone will start scanning for satellites from scratch again.
It appears as though Samsung have inadvertently hooked the control of the power feed to the GPS chip into the same piece of logic as the power feed to the light behind the phone's buttons.
I am not sure what else can trigger the loss of signals but this appears to be a real problem.
I have verified that it is not just my phone that experiences this issue. I have replicated it on one of my colleagues phones too.
Can somebody from Vodafone please try this same test and report the results back to Samsung. It needs to be fixed urgently.

I noticed a similar effect when using the GPS test app.
When you have a fix, if you turn the phone 90 deg. to 'landscape' view and then back again, it has to start again to get a lock...
Are you sure it is not a bug in the app? With GPS Test app, I have a fix, then press menu button then press the back button to hide it. 3 seconds later the button lights go out but I still have a fix.
Its a bug in the app. Same thing happens when you go to settings too. Loses a good fix.

Liverpool Fan in Dublin on Vodafone with with SGS (are you my twin??)I'm also an LFC fan in Dublin with an SGS on VF and I also have GPS issues.
Did VF ever respond to you? I've given up trying to talk to them, they really haven't a clue and don't care.
BTW, I followed the instructions on this thread to a T (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842694&highlight=dangrayorg) and I now have fast GPS fixes and pretty good Google Navigation ability. Sure the location sometimes strays 20-40 metres off the road we are heading down but it's actually pretty good bearing in mind it's a bloody phone not a dedicated car based GPS.
I'm actually quite happy with it now

does your wifi take forever to engage
i find it takes a bit for mine to come on after engaging
just think its a little strange and was wondering if anyone else experiences this
It takes a few seconds as it does with Bluetooth and 4G. My moment did the same thing so its normal. It takes a few seconds for a laptop to connect to WiFi too
sent from my EVO Shift 4G
just seems to take longer on the shift than any other phone i've had
sometimes short meaning 10 seconds
mostly its like 20-30 seconds
wasn't sure if this was programming taking effect or an actual glitch
like a motor that squirts its oil jets to lubricate before starting
edit:
i think this might be a mental glitch on my part to some extent
on the epic the wifi icon comes up immediately but then it searches & authenticates with known access points
where as on the shift all that happens before the icon shows up and there is no visual notification of authentication beyond 'on & connected'
i timed it and it takes 40 seconds for my wifi to connect with saved credentials and show the icon in the bar...
anyone else?
thanks
edit: still an issue
I don't turn my wifi (or bluetooth) off. On the stock ROM i got 18-24 hours on the battery so I found no need to micro manage the power settings.
I havent had any issues with this...it has been significantly faster than my old hero....id say within 10 seconds max from the time i click the htc wifi toggle widget to the time im connected and ready to go
its not a huge issue obviously...i too have looked at my phone only to realize i left 3g on or wifi/bluetooth and it doesn't hit too hard on the battery even after hours...
i just wanted to document and see if others had the same issue
that is all
it just takes 40 seconds for my wifi to come on and be connected
i thought it was worth noting on the forums
and i hope others can either confirm or deny the length of time it takes to connect
so i can determine if its simply my phone or everyones
i've never had a device take this long to connect
thats all i'm saying
not a big deal...just curious if its only my damn phone
thanks STAlphonso...just saw your post
and i guess that sucks for me...but glad to hear its not every phone
i noticed it connects very quickly (normal speed) everytime i install a rom...then from the 2nd time on its slow...
no clue whats causing this
So I've noticed this problem with my SGS3. When I drive into work, I turn off the wifi radio (or whatever the term is) before heading out. As I am driving down the road, the status bar will suddenly show the wifi network discovered icon, so I go into settings and see that Wifi has been enabled again. WTF.
Anyone else having this issue? I don't want my phone constantly scanning for wifi access points and turning on my wifi radio when I have specifically disabled it. Is this a known issue?

Yes, and I should have put that in the thread title. Thanks.
I actually turn that option off but it seems that the battery wouldn't last me as long when it was on.
DUDE I've been wondering the same thing.
i keep thinking maybe its me hitting it by mistake but its def turning itself on
All day today I have been having Wi-Fi connectivity issues. None of the other devices in my home are experiencing this. It is just my OnePlus 8 Pro that keeps dropping Wi-Fi and refuses to load games. While I'm on Facebook or any other app it refuses to load. It doesn't matter what frequency I am on or what channel I am on. It is not my service provider I have already called and asked. I think something is messed up. So is anyone else having Wi-Fi problems on the OnePlus 8 Pro?
Do you have a private DNS active?
Same here

Mine will only stay connected for short periods. If I put it down and leave it for a while 9 times out of 10 it's swapped me back to mobile data. I've reached out to OnePlus to see if it's a fault or a known problem they're working on.
This is actually happening to me as well. 10.5.8 stock rooted. I see that exclamation point next to the wifi signal sometimes and nothing else in the house is having issues.
Okay so this is what you have to do to fix the problem. Click onto your Wi-Fi and let it go into the settings then swipe up on your screen and go into the app info. Clear your cache. Turn your Wi-Fi off and back on and it should work just fine
I have a much better fix. Change your MAC privacy setting to "Use device MAC" and change from default "Use randomized MAC". Wa la I haven't had a drop all day. This has been driving me crazy!
It might actually be a really simple problem with a simple solution, just i need to see a screenshot with the diagnostics, or the troubleshoot from the device why doesn't it want to keep the connection steady. You can actually learn all these things related to the wifi and some little programming things really easily, it is not that tough, trust me. I took the cisco programming course from SPOTOclub.com, during this pandemic, and in one month i was already an expert in the wireless connection and the LAN and so on and so forth.
If you're having Wi-Fi connection problems or see an Wi-Fi icon with an exclamation point Wi-Fi problem, try the solutions below:
Make sure Wi-Fi is on. Then turn it off and on again to reconnect.
Make sure Airplane mode is off. Then turn it on and off again to reconnect.
Press your phone's power button for a few seconds. Then, on your screen, tap Restart Restart. If you don't see "Restart," press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, until your phone restarts.
