Anyone notice the compass as well as other sensors respond SUPER SLOW. Fire up skymaps and find mars. Go on ill wait... Broken GPS is getting all the talk.

There's an app called "Android Sensor Data" that can calibrate the accelerometer, but you have to run it at every boot. It doesn't fix the compass, which I expect us just broken.

Yup, it was one of the first things I noticed about the phone. The compas is definitely either broken or just not very good.

Its not only sky maps but also layer as well, once you stop moving the phone it takes a good 10 to 15 secs to position itself, very laggy, just patiently waiting for the fix now -_-"

one would think with Samsung preinstalling Layar on the phone the compass would work without a hitch... im hoping its a software issue not updating as frequent.
Based on how a compass works, (magnetism) I would hazard a guess that there is NO software fix. Buy a compass. If it doesn't work, it will never work. Software can't fix a bad magnet. I COULD be wrong...I HOPE I'm wrong...I DOUBT I'm wrong.

I asked T-mobile if there would be a fix for the compass along with the GPS on Twitter. This was their reply:
"TMobile_USA: @fjohnette That's what is believed causing the GPS problem so its possible we will keep you updated. ^SG"

So this means it's possible that they will NOT keep you updated??
Anyway, I think we now have the word of every t-mobile CS rep and tech support person and most (if not all) don't really have any idea. I guess it's worth the effort to keep pestering. It'd sure be more comforting to have an official response.

You are completely correct in how a compass works... Basic magnetism... However. Just because our compass doesn't work doesn't mean the magnet bit isn't detecting north as it should. It could easily be that the other sensors that detect which way that magnet is oriented are reporting incorrect data, which is possibly fixable via firmware update. Or that the android itself is doing something wrong with that data, or any combination of the above. And these possible causes are far from exhaustive, just a few possibilities off the top of my head.

Yep, but every single thing about how that data is collected, interpreted, and passed on to the operating system is software, not to mention the interaction with the accelerometer sensors as Arr mentioned. Lots of potential points of failure here that have everything to do with software. Fingers crossed that it's not just a borked magnetometer.
Very true. As I said, I REALLY REALLY HOPE they can fix it... I'm just worried that we're going to be stuck with broken hardware. I'll never buy a phone on launch-day again...

this is my fear as well. It bugs the **** out of me to see people all over the forums violently defending samsung and saying with absolute certainty that a firmware fix is coming.
How do they know it can be fixed with firmware? I'm not saying that it's impossible, I'll be the first to admit I have no idea how the compass actually works, but to post saying that it will be fixed is so unbelievably stupid and irresponsible that I can only attribute it to buyers remorse manifesting itself as post-purchase rationalization.
Too many idiots to have any sort of productive discussion anywhere.

Agreed. The GPS issues are getting so much attention that the borked compass is falling by the wayside. I actually use the compass, so this is really annoying.
you guys are brave
I returned the phone after a few days and decided to wait for a fix.
When/if the fix comes, I can easily buy the phone again.
To keep the phone is the same thing as keeping you anxiety level high, waiting for a fix, checking every board twice a day.
Is it worth it?

Google Sky maps works fine for me. It does lag slightly when rotating, (which seems to match what others are saying about compass lag), but i don't see how it's worthless. It's dead on for me.
Have you tried Google Street View (Compass Mode) or Yelp's 'Monocle' / Layar?
The compass will sometimes point to magnetic North. But most times, it spins around wildly, or simply points to the wrong direction and does not update correctly.

A friend and I bought our phones on the same day. Date on the stickers on the box (which I assume is a build date) is 7/17 on both of them. Side-by-side, Google Sky works perfectly for him, and doesn't work at all for me.
My compass points south no matter what orientation the phone is in, or what direction I face. Sometimes if I just stand still for a very long time, it'll slowly sort of drift in one direction or another, but I haven't had the patience to just wait and see whether it ever actually aligns with where I'm facing or if it's just random variation.
Check my little video on youtube about this issue demonstrating how slow the compass reacts.
YouTube, search for: SvAJrR5Gmy0
or "Samsung Vibrant Compass Issues"
still won't let me post links yet....
I did end up getting the other phone working instead of pointing in only one direction. I factory data reset the phone and tried agan and it started pointing in the correct direction at least, still very slow.
I also suggest looking at sensor data to see how your phone performs:

I downloaded the visualizer app (the one with the 2 dots and not the square)
and yea if I begin on the left side of the screen then touch the right and move around the points hang a bit when they cross and will hardly ever switch (unless u do complex rotating action with both points but then the switch is periodic at best)
but if I begin on the right side of the screen, the points ALWAYS switch...always...
Interesting...does that mean it's a software issue?
I already KNOW this is the wrong section but I feel this is something that could benefit from the most viewed sub forum.
edit: starting from the right side, the points fix themselves when I do the same complex rotating action that sometimes causes point switch starting from the left. I'd record it if I had a camera, but yea.
none of the 163 (at the time of this posting) viewers have anything to say?
not even a "WRONG SECTION NOOB" (Despite my non noobishness) post?
sheesh.
wrong section, noob.
wrong section noob.
hahahhaha LOVE IT.
another interesting update: The previous results were on a Cyanogen Mod...
Using Modaco Desire Alpha 14 I get the EXACT opposite results...
Starting with a finger on the left side of the screen then the right side point switch is guaranteed...whereas starting with a finger on the right then the left point switch is non-existent.
I think it is entirely a software fault...anyone who knows anything have anything to say about it?
then again, the overall finicky-ness of it is probably just a flaw period...though I think it can be fixed with a software update due to the different behavior between ROMs.
seems to switch points at random actually...on the desire ROM especially.
still wrong section noob. haha.
It has been covered by pretty much all tech blogs on the 'net already.
Some think it is a hardware bug, and others think it's software. Who knows.
I don't think it will matter for most people, although I consider it a serious flaw if it is not possible to fix it with software.
And yeah, this might be the wrong section, but it could also turn into a dev issue. "wrong section, noob" was funny the first time.

I just tried that Multitouch Visible Test, and it does not always switch the dots. It is a little bit strange though, because it seems like the dots are just put on the wrong intersect of the red and blue lines. If it is a hardware malfunction it is a very weird one. Some kind of random mirror function.
Maybe its a problem with the app itself and nothing with phones.... comon now, I don't have a problem with multitouch and I think that app is horrible to determine a bad phone..
No offence people, but these issues everyone brings up on this phone isn't a issue at all... the 3g issue is network not phone, the wonky screen is from the wrap around effect, the multitouch issue is retarded.....
The only valid one imo is the dust...... everything else seems irrelevant

The multitouch issue is not app based, otherwise it'd be present on the Droid as well (where it isn't, infact Droid's multitouch is damn near flawless looking at that video and having owned one) Though it's not going to be an issue for anything I and many others current use the phone for (Browsing, Maps, Gallery, anything else that uses pinch to zoom) it will become an issue and may already be for multitouch games...From what I saw it seemed like it is likely software based due to the fact that on the Cyan ROM one thing happened in one order and on the Desire ROM same thing happened (and a bit more buggy) in another order.
But yea, about the 3G issue..I never had that either...in fact my 3G with my N1 is better than the 3G i had with my G1.

It may be just that There is different hardware/software in one vs the other.....
I still don't believe it will be a issue, I mean that app your sliding both fingers at the same time, and it only happens some of the time..... I don't believe there will be many games where your performing that kind of action, and even if so it don't happent all the time and may act completely differently in a game than it does in the app..... I mean, if it was a big deal we would notice it in the other pinch to zoom apps, I've tried on pinch to zoom to get it to do anything weird and it don't..... just saying, I don't think this video/app proves much....
Then again, who the hell am I.. lol I don't know shat like anyone....

I too have absolutely 0 issues with pinch to zoom and rotating, getting my fingers really close together, etc. 0 issues whatsoever.
I'm on the Desire rom though.
Anyway, you have to remember this has absolutely NO importance whatsoever unless you play a lot of games.
If you don't, like me (I have a 360, so I couldn't care less), you'll never really have an issue with this.
For GPS and compass issues, but never have seen any evidence. .. anyone got a link, I'd just like to see it with my own eyes instead of speculating. ... thanks
Didn't think there was a statement directly from them.
I think you're right that there's no official statement from them. I think it's just what people have heard from the tech support folks at Samsung (and now also from TMo).
i just spoke to a rep and they've stated that *there aren't any updates planned to be released by samsung* *if they do, there will be information on the website* i kindly told them that they need to fix the slow screen to screen scrolling, gps, error connecting when using friends feed and replying to someone
other than that, the phone is excellent.

Just tried hyperspace lite. Thanks for the suggestion. Its pretty cool.
That makes three games I have players that use the accelerometer for controls (also replica island labrynth) and so far I find the accelerometer to be excellent.
WAY better, or instance, than playing similar games on the wii.
I just emailed Samsung about the issue, and asked them what the time frame of it being publicly addressed and fixed would be. I suggest everyone having issues do the same. I have not heard back yet, but will post their response when I do.
I also just got off the phone with T-Mobile tech support. They said they will not swap the phone out for the GPS issue, as it's a known issue and a different unit will not make a difference. They also had me do the keypad fix, (*#*#ect.) and it didn't give me any different results from the last time I tried it, other than the loss of signal I had last time.
I asked what Samsung has said to them about the issue and her response was there is no timeframe on when this will be fixed, but Samsung is aware for of the issue and are working on it.
Basically the same stuff everyone else is saying. 6 days left for me before I return the phone. I hope something happens soon.

On the contrare. . Try homering battle 3g. There you will see... after that you will no what I mean and every game using the accelerometer takes a split second to really orientate......
It is flawed. ..
Or try hyperspace again and pay attention... then close it and download android sensor data... open that app, now go back to the game and notice how Mich faster it moves and how Mich more it responds... another game is speedx 3d... so hard to control then open android sensor data and its smooth as butter...
Please check again, it works sometimes like the first time then after that you will notice slow response. ..

Its not major, just a slight stutter which in really meticulous games like asphalt 5 speeding around corners it will effect you...
But run that app after reset, even close it, for some reason now the sensor is flawless. Lime the app calibrates it somehow......
I was cool on all bugs till this, cause I'm a gamer, but luckily someone found that app in another thread, makes it flawless....
Its like first time ever playing the app, it plays fine, but then next time its wack... really strange. I can't believe no one else noticed on games like those, I notice the slightest weirdness.
Big thanks to all the rom devs out there working hard on the sweet froyoish goodness. I've seen a lot of work on the GPS issues that have turned it into a trustworthy device, but very little mention of the compass.
What is the consensus on this? Is it just crappy hardware that won't ever get fixed? Bad gravity? I miss my google sky!
yeah, why is the Compass so twitchy like a crackhead
I wouldn't say it's twitchy. I've never noticed mine jumping around.
I did notice it pointing the opposite direction I was traveling yesterday down the interstate in Google Maps, though.
When I turned the phone, the compass didn't move (I was in the passenger side, for those wondering ).
I think it's just bad hardware that's very susceptible to interference. I've seen it work properly every now and then, but most of the time it jumps around like crazy.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, oddly enough the GPS was accurate that time, but the compass wasn't.
I think Google Maps had me about a block or two behind where I was on the Interstate, though (judging by where I was in the software when I got to curves or intersections/exits).
Bing Maps seemed more accurate, but it doesn't have a compas on the screen (or I haven't found the setting for it, don't think I've even gone into Bing Settings yet) and it lack Voice Guided Navigation on Android.
Isn't Google Maps Navigation still in Beta? Maybe something is wrong IRT the software. Last time I tried Catch Compass (which was admittedly over a month ago, before the JI6 update) it actually seemed rather accurate... It would turn as I'd turn and everything. /shrugs/ Dunno what the issue is with it.
Interesting. Some apps seem to pull heading info from the gpd, while others will attemp to use the compass sensor. Using something like tricorder shows the compass to show north regardless.
I guess it's just one of those things

The Company has even supplied a fix. What does it do? Reset everything back to default. From Samsung itself:
"During online surveillance, there is an abundance of GPS tweaks that impair GPS performance. Often times, no backup is performed to restore values prior to modifications. Samsung has released an application that restores GPS settings to recommended factory defaults for optimum performance."
http://ow.ly/3hEM1
You are not alone op. The GPS on this phone is broken and after taking it apart numerous times and applying every fix known the GPS barely works with a horrible accuracy and then stops working completely after a day or so. Sure, if I do a cold reset I can get it working again for a bit but again the accuracy is so bad it can't be used for navigation in any area with more than one road. You will get some confusing reviews on here from some people in the midwest using there navigation 20 miles from the nearest road or building taller than 2 stories but for those of us that don't have a 360 degree line of sight to the sky are pretty much screwed.
I used GPS on my 4 year old blackberry daily and I can't believe I am debating going back to it.
The GPS on this phone is broken! It is a hardware issue and is not going to be fixed on this forum. Samsung is unable to fix this issue without a recall and don't kid yourself...they are not going to do that.
Recall is such a cute word, consumers like to throw it around when they have a problem... if you think the phone is going to be recalled you've got another thing coming. "recalled" LOL
It sure is a hardware issue. My G1 if left on the flooboard of my car behaves exactly like my S with a clear satellite view. This GPS radio has a poor signal/noise ratio that no software can fix. QA missed this one.
I picked up a HTC G2 yesterday. I ran gps status on it. The gps had never been used before and it locked 9 sat's in less than 5 sec's for 9ft of accuracy. I knew my vibrant wasn't the greatest gps device, but I didnt know it was that bad. on the bright side, I never had any real navigation issues with the vibrant, so it still served a purpose. I understand some people have real lemon gps units, so I guess im lucky.
Mine gets a gps lock as soon as maps gets open and gps was turned off so that was just with cell networks finding me, turn on the gps and boom 9m accuracy, and samsung will not recall these for it.

GPS works perfect for me right out of the box, since I bought it, only takes about 5-10 seconds to get a lock, even in bad weather. I also live in the south though which makes me closer to the satelites, so I take it the people with issues live up north?

When I first got the phone the GPS sorta worked, after JI6 it worked better but not the greatest. Now I've reverted back to Stock JFD and have used GPS in many situations, even used it to drive 1.5hrs to the Cities with Navigation, never lost signal, was dead on (except starting out because I didn't follow it until I got onto the highway) and on my way home I used it too, no loss of signal or anything.
I've used it to check in on FS and have no problems finding my location.
I got my phone maybe a after it was released? Just saying..
My Fascinate takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes to get going. If I don't gave a general sense of direction when starting my trip, I must wait.

To those of you who can't seem to find anything wrong with the GPS try using it in any densly populated area. Even the mightiest of the GPS fanboys on here aren't getting any better than about 100 feet of accuracy. 100 feet of accuracy is crap and makes the GPS totally unreliable for the majority of the US population that live in dense areas.
Minneapolis/St. Paul is "Heavily Dense" population. I picked up a signal that was dead on in a few seconds.

Wow, you're a little prick aren't you?
I'm using Stock JFD, with GPS/Use Wireless networks checked. Navigation/Maps locks on with in a few seconds.
does it piss you off that it works on my phone and not yours or what?
Just tested accuracy INSIDE my office, connected to 6-10 sats and within 150FT This is inside.
Do you know what use wireless networks checked even means? You also failed to answer the how many feet question. You can keep calling me names but it doesn't mean your gps is working.
I am not the emotional one here.

Yes I do , It uses the Wireless Networks/Towers to Triangulate your location.
@samsungservice told me to do a factory format reset which actually wipes the phone clean...
After the factory format, my phone lag is gone.
GPS is once again locking within 10 seconds, however now when I come to a stop in the car, GPS wonders 100's of yards off causing the MAPS to recalculate the route which totally screws you when you lost.
I also ran run GPSrestrore app which didn't fix the wondering issue.
This GPS issue really bites. STILL
Does anyone else get the following:
1. GMaps not recognising the compass and not turning its compass as you turn round;
2. Compass app goes mental when you test by spinning round (mine spins the wrong way then back randomly)
?
Looks like my Note3 is proper fkd. At the moment it's just peeing me off.

Sounds like the Note 3 is suffering from the same compass issue as the S4. The compass just needs to be calibrated. Download GPS Status & Toolbox (excellent app!) from Google Play Store and go to Tools/Compass calibration. That should fix it. Calibrate the compass outdoors away from metal structures for best accuracy. Factory reset resets also the compass calibration data, but luckily the calibration takes only about 10 seconds or so. Hope this helps!

Cheers Pete.
I did try that but it's still flying all over the place.
Sending it back as faulty. There's too much I dislike about this phone to make it worth £620.
I tried with mine and a few demo units from the stores.
After a thorough test, they all essentially have this problem. My one, when you go to *#0*# it would just either not spin or spin sporadically, same with the demo units.
I guess it's a software problem, 4.3 problem essentially, my AOSP'd Note 2 also has this problem

Wow, so perhaps all of them come with a feature that just doesn't work? Weird.

Well, probably just the batch that first came out. Do you have this problem?

Ah, I see what you're getting at.
No, I didn't get a replacement. Sammy's seem to be all about the gimmick now, and I'm waiting for the N5 or a 32GB G2 to hit these shores.
Besides, £620 for a phone that does the pen-hover thing that my 2003 Windows tablet PC did? Nah.

Oh right okay, so you yourself had the same problem, but probably some external reason not mainly because of this, you sent it back and issued a refund?
I have a feeling that when I leave my house, there is a lot of magnetic interference because my compass always works in my house :/

I had the problem, per my original post, so I sent it back as faulty. There are other reasons I was happy to send it back though, as I wrote above.

Yeah, I noticed I was speaking to the OP like a min ago, I thought the OP got a replacement and never responded back, but alright! I hope a software update could fix this :/

Heh. I hope they sort it out for you.
I'll be sending this device back and getting a replacement, since Rogers has a 15 days return policy if under 30 mins talk time, I'm gonna exchange for a brand new one and see whether that helps
Sent from my fingers to your face using my Samsung Galaxy Note 3!
Got a brand new one! If it still doesn't work, well then screw it, I guess a software update would fix it.

so you have found a solution for your compass problem?
Following up...
Anyone have any luck getting the compass fixed? Just got my Note 3 (T Mobile US) and I am having the same problem. Makes orienteering and geocaching all but impossible...

My new device still has this bug, but calibrates faster than my first one. It's a widely known bug, maybe Samsung needs to fix it.
FWIW mine has the same problem. I did manage to get it work work correctly for a little while by using a "metal detector" app which vibrated when it detected something. It suddenly started behaving correctly for a short while.
Calibrating it with the GPS Tools app also fixes it for a little while.
Having the same issue with my Note 3 as well. The GPS Status app using the compass calibration fixes the problem but once you restart the phone the compass no longer works again and you need to calibrate once more.
It seems like a software bug issue rather than a faulty compass. It's annoying but at least there is a solution.
