Anybody Tethering via USB? I could of sworn there was an app for it when I had my G1, but there was also an app for wireless.
I figure I could plug my Vibrant into my laptop and have it charge my phone at the sametime use my phone for a source of internet. When I need to charge my laptop I could just plug it in, but still have the ability to surf and charge my phone if needed.

Yeah I've only found the wireless tether as well. The wired version was just so much more convenient.

Anything for non windows users ? (Linux specifically) I'm fine using wifi tether (yes, I rooted)- but I like usb for ease of use.
Thanks guys.
Cracks me up I look for a solution yesterday and then I see 5 threads talking about kies today.
Last time I tried to grab it, but I couldn't find it for some odd reason. I guess I have a few ideas now.
@jackhuny I'll give that YouTube a try when I have a chance. Work blocks any and every half way decent site. I'm glad they haven't blocked this one yet.

In ubuntu 10.04 usb teather is automatic. Just make sure your phone has debugging mod on and plug in.

Ubuntu supports USB tether out of the box, but without the tether function in the rom you get nothing. The unbranded Galaxy S rom has a USB option for "PC Internet" which works perfect with Linux, but it was removed in the Vibrant. I rooted, just wondering if there is a usb tether app out there I'm not seeing (besides PdaNet)...
Just install samsung Kies suite, or Behold II USB driver.
Set the phone USB mode to Kies, USB debugging is optional.
Setup dial-up networking, use samsung mobile modem
dial *99#
that's it.
or you can tether directly to Cradlepoint router using same Kies mode. Make sure you specify APN in modem setting.
PDANet works via usb. You may need to download updated drivers from the Samsung website.

Hi,
I'm looking for a software solution that allows to connect an Android phone via USB in order to use the connection (WIFI or cable) active on the PC. It can be seen as a reverse-tether.
This was possible by default on every windows mobile phone via active sync.
Is it possible with Android?
I'd like to ask the same question

Find pdanet on the android market. Free version only lasts a month but its worth the 20 or so to buy it. Plug the phone into the pc, run the app, run the software on the pc, and voila you'll have a wired tether.

Ok but that's not what I'm looking for. Pdanet allows you to use the 3G internet connection of the phone with your laptop, what I want is the opposit: use the active connection of the PC with the phone.
Ahhh ok, my bad. Should've read a lil better and saw reverse tether lol. Maybe PM a dev asking if that's possible, or post in a general section if anyone would be willing to make an app like that (if possible) for you.

I use the application "Virtual Router"
with which I can set up my pc/laptop as an access point. I set up a SS-ID and a passkey. Then I use my phone to connect using WiFi. That way my phone connects to my pc using WiFi which makes it possible to use the LAN internet my laptop has
phone -----WiFi-----> Laptop --------LAN-------> Internet
Hope it helps
PC Internet > Router > Wifi > Android : Connectify
Laptop Internet > WIfi > Android : Connectify
PC Internet > USB Cable > Android : no idea! (my ex HD2 can do this flawlessly, with Winmo ofcourse)
The wi-fi hotspot works great on my phone but I can't get USB tethering to work. I wouldn't bother with tethering but the awful battery life on the Desire HD makes this an attractive option since it gives me Internet access on my laptop while the battery charges on my phone (obviously, wi-fi sharing does not do this).
But when I use the "USB tethering" option when I connect my phone to my laptop, it doesn't work. I initially got a device driver error but now, when I connect the phone, I get nothing - no errors, it connects, but nothing happens and I can't access the Internet.
Is this a T-Mobile (UK) issue? Has T=M disabled USB tethering? Or do I need a driver? Or does USB tethering just not work (for anyone)?
Did you install HTC Sync? It install the necessary drivers for USB tethering to work.

Do you have to do this ?
The reason I ask is that I'm thinking if I'm travelling and I want to quickly hook my phone up to someone's machine and do tethering via the USB I won't be able to do it if I don't have HTC Sync, if that is the case that would be balls !

Which version of Windows are you using ?
silly question, but why don't you connect the device to your PC in charging mode only, then fire up the WIFI hotspot?
Or does this not work?

I have tried to use my USB tethering on my PC but Im not getting an internet connection.. Could someone please inform me on how to correctly use USB Tethering
There was a app called USB tethering that I think was made by the same team that made the wireless tether app. I tried it last year and it worked on the evo.

It depends. If you're using a ROM that has the USB tethering unlocked, you should be able to just plug into your computer, then when the prompt on your phone pops up, select usb tethering. Wait 1-3 minutes, and it should have a connection. That works fine for me, and I just tried againr ight now. If you're not using a rom that has usb tethering unlocked, there is an app called PDAnet, that works great for tethering. It has a trial period, then after the trial period it only lets you on non secure sites, so you'd need to upgrade to the 'pro version'. There is also an app called EasyTether, that I believe is free and also works great for tethering.

EasyTether does work well, but the free app won't let you go to https pages, so you won't be able to, say, check a gmail account with it. You can upgrade to the pro version to see those pages, though it'll cost you 10 clams.
something my last desire never had and something i didn't even know the ns had. after completely screwing up the build system on ubuntu here, it was something i desperately needed. my wifi drivers are borked, so i can't access wifi and was considering a complete reformat, until i noticed the menu option...
thank you ns!
Yeah pretty sweet, i use the portable hto spot option quite a bit , very nifty indeed
btw: is there something like tho opposite of that? sharing a wired pc internet connection with the ns via usb.
Yes. You connect the USB to your nexus s. Then you don't turn on the USB storage. Go to settings wireless options and click on tether.

uhm no - that's regular tethering, isn't it? I meant the other way around. The pc is plugged in to wired internet. And I want to use that for surfing on the phone without having wifi or mobile data activated

Hmm maybe a dev will get on top of this
Oh ic. Sorry. I read that wrong. I don't think There is a simple way to do it. I remember there's a program that lets you turn your laptop into a wireless router. You plug in the Ethernet to your laptop and use the program to transmit the radio like a router. You can probably then use the phone's wifi to connect to that. Ive never tried it but theoretically it should work. Good luck

usb tethering is not something like
" i connect my laptop with the usb port of my NS that(my phone) has internet access over the mobile network and i can use that on my laptop either"??
i mean wi-fi tethering is "sharing" phone's internet connection with other phones/wi-fi enabled devices to access the internet via wireless connection...
so usb tethering should be the same but with cable obviously..
or am i getting something wrong here?

no. that's a hotspot. meaning devices connect to your ns like a router. you can even set a password and session id for your phone
I have been tethering my SGS2 (AT&T) with my laptop via USB with no problem using the SGS2 for data connection. I finally got a USB adaptor for my GT 10. It sees my SGS2 and says "High Powered USB Device Connected, Cannot connect to this device. Connected device needs external power supply."
I haven't found any threads regarding GT10 usb tether. Is this not possible?
Not possible. Drivers would be required.
I didn't want to mess with rooting my device(s) to get bluetooth or wifi tether. I tried setting my SGS2 as wifi hot spot and it works perfectly. My SGS2 is unlocked.

Easiest solution, no idea why people would try to tether via USB.
I was wondering the other day though, whether it would work if someone had a 3G USB stick and connected it to SGT.
USB Cable will not make any difference to speed
Tethering via Cable will not make any noticeable difference to the speed. Because the phone uses 3G to connect to internet and it is already quite slow from the max speed that can be supported via WiFi.
We have sketchy internet access at my office due to location so I actually tether my PC via USB to my SGS2 sometimes. Just curious if the GT10 could do it. I am also curious if it will work with a 3G USB Stick.
what mode is the sgs2 in when you connect it? can you connect in usb debugging mode to see if it shows up as a high powered device then? i only have a vibrant so i don't know what your exact options are.
3G USB Stick requires you to install a driver before using it. And I doubt that Network operators out there have got a driver for Android!
It is unlikely to work. Let us know if you find something special
why don't you just use the wifi tethering in the settings? no root, no hardware, no fuss.

Won't help because Tab will not provide power to the phone, phone will still discharge quickly because of constant data transfer.
Another option would be a USB 3G stick maybe.
