So the day I bought my vibrant I had data issues. I talked a tmobile tech support guy and he helped me with my problem, great. But afterwards he asked me how I was liking my phone since he had one as well. We talked some about the phone and all, but then I asked about the battery life.
Heres the interesting part, he said after getting around 5 hours of use out of a full charge, he put the battery in the freezer over night (in a zip lock) and charge it afterwards. He claims to be getting a whole 24 his of battery with moderate use.
Is there any truth to this statement? I'm sure he was over exaggerating to some extant but he was a tech and I wanna take his word for it but dont want to try it lol.
Another thing is I want to know other ways to improve my battery life. I heard "training a battery" thrown around these forums, how do I do this?
I try to keep stupid services from running by going to settings>app>running services. Is this enough or is there a better way?
First post, hope it was a good one lol.
I hear ya man the battery is really bothering me too. It's basically dead by the time u get home, which is not good enough for me. I called T-Mobile and they are sending me another battery.
When I get the new battery I'll try the freezer thing.
Well, gotta go... battery is almost dead at this point. : (

when i got the phone i calibrated the battery like i did with my g1 with the cm releases. basically let the battery die completely then charge fully. don't know if that had any effect, but with how much i use my phone (moderate-light texting, browsing, gps when it works, no gaming) i could probably get through 2 full days. with playing some games i can still easily get a full day.
putting the battery in the freezer overnight shouldn't have any long term effect on the battery. it may improve your battery life very shortly because a colder battery holds it's charge better, but once it's heated up (or at regular idle temp in your phone) any small benefit you may have had is gone.
Try Juice Defender. It is working wonders for me. I am going on 8 hours of up time and I am at 75%. Normally I would be getting close to needing a charge.

What settings do you use? Do you use the default settings from the setup?
What the heck are you guys doing to kill your batteries?
I use my phone off/on all day off the charger at 6am and I turn it off and charge it at 11pm. Often I'm normally around 30-60% depending on the use through out the day.
Turn off what you don't need. I mean do you need wifi on all day? Do you need 3G on all day? I'm guessing you don't unless you are streaming video all day.

Can you elaborate on your settings? I was thinking of installing this app and getting rid of the task killer since I'm getting very inconsistent battery usage each time after a full charge. Have you tried Ultimate Juice?

I think its just luck of the draw. When i first got my Vibrant i was getting at least 20 hours out of a charge. I had to exchange my phone due to a few annoying dead pixels and now im lucky to get 8 - 10 hours out of a charge. Everything is set up as it was on my original phone.
I just use the default settings at startup.

I have all widgets turned off, wifi off, gps off, brightness on minimum and a solid/static black wallpaper.
I use the phone for very few calls and very few txts... mostly use it for web browsing throught the day and some news apps - with a little paper toss mixed in.
I use my phone more than the average guy, but the usage is in line with my usage on my iphone and HD2. I know how to be gentle on the battery, but I still have to charge it when I get home from work.
My battery lasted 2 days the other day. Got down to 15 percent. It's very strange. I was using it but not very often maybe once every few hours. But I played some ff7 to demo to my friends, used the gps to get directions. Most importantly I started killing all nonessential apps with astro immediately after I stopped using them. I think this is what's prolonging my battery. Sure theyre not using anymore cpu cycles but they're still taking up ram, and that is a constant drain folks.

There is no difference in draw whether you are using 1K or 256 MB, the chip will always draw the same amount of power to maintain the memory.
I measured current consumption from the battery. It takes about 20 to 60 seconds for the CPU and everything to ramp down into their sleep state. Anything that wakes it up often kills batteries quick. I believe most of the power being used is idly switching sleep states. Can't wait for custom ROMs to allow tuning.

You went down 13% in 4 mins -________-. Go exchange your phone, lmao. Or turn off 3G, Accounts & Sync, turn off brightness, and install JuiceDefender. See if that makes a difference. My phone goes down 1% in about 2 hours...
mine barley lasts until evening when I plug it back in... but thats just how these phones are. 1% in 2 hours is very unlikely unless you just don't use it and have everything disabled.
Rooting your phone alone has no advert consequences on your phone's battery life. What you do on your phone does

indeed what a troll
Just turning off push email/notifications can have a significant effect on battery run time. I doubled my run time by putting some reasonable settings on my sync intervals.
I refresh my exchange account every 15 mins during peak-time ( 1 hour off-peak ), Tweetdeck every 2 hours, all other accounts hourly. With moderate use I have no problem going 24 hours on a single charge.
Also be on the lookout for misbehaving apps. I had a single dormant streaming app sitting in the background using over 10% of my battery. I kill that app manually after every use.

As it's being said before, if you do not use your device you get excellent battery life out of it - might as well have a painted brick on your desk.

My battery last about 24hrs on average. I bought extra batteries and I have run each of them until they hit 1% and then I use and external battery charger, bought of of ebay, came with 2 batteries and a charger for them for 14 bucks, and i do have certian things i do that drain more than others, but for instance i watch a 2 hour movie, and started with a fresh battery, (99%) and when the movie was over I was at 73%, much better than when i first got my phone, but i also still use advance task manager which everyone says is bad for the phone, but i just use it and exempt everything that is used for normal operations, then it only kills the apps i have used and want to kill. now the settings does allow you to do this by each app, but i am just lazy and paid for the app back on my G1 days and it makes killing them in widget form so one click. i just tried to exclude all the things that the phone uses to operate smoothly, and kill the rest of the garbage apps, also you can try a program autostarts, i have it as it suggested it in the app forum sticky, costs a buck, but i used it, not sure how much it helps, but like i said all I have done and how i use all of my battery each and every use now gives me outstanding battery life. No 8 days or anything but still tons better than my G1 and i didn't keep much running like i do on this one. Also turn off auto brightness, and just use the slide if you need to turn it up, dont use live wallpapers and turn it to use 2g only, and then when you need the 3g turn that back on, there is widgets to get for that so its a one click as 3g really drains the battery, so when not in use go to 2g if your not surfing the web or wacthing videos off a site, doing those things will help the life of your battery.

That just means that your while your phone was turned on, 74 percent of the total power was used by your display.
Makes sense because you turned your screen on for about 74% of the time.
Try running fix permissions from clockwork. I recently got a boost in power & battery life from doing eugenes v6 mod and the suggested lag.

Hey, post your battery drain time, for your original included battery. Vote also!
Please try to do it using this method, to keep results consistent and more accurate.
Fully charge your battery, once fully charged, reboot your phone, this will reset the "Time since boot" to zero. Then use your phone as you normally do, once the battery is about to die, dial in *#*#4636#*#* choose battery information, then please post your "Time Since Boot." This time should be reflective of the time it took for your battery to drain.
From full charge, to basically empty, my battery icon is flashing... the max I've gotten is 25hrs.
I have screen set to lowest level
only gmail is actively synced
bluetooth off, haptic feedback off

I make a few calls, play maybe an hours worth of Angry Birds, and use the internet for probably an hour.
Please post your results, and how you use your phone! Thanks

Hi,
I unplugged my phone this morning around 9 A.M, and sent about 50-100 texts today, and right now at 5:35 my phone is at 33%. The only thing that is running, is ADW.Launcher, and I've done LIGHT Twitter/Facebook checking throughout the day, maybe about 2-3 times each. I have Beautiful Widgets, but it's set to update every hour. I haven't talked on the phone at all, and my brightness is set to auto. My wifi is off, and I made sure I don't have GPS or anything on. What's killing my battery? My BB's battery life was 1000x better, I shouldn't have to baby this phone to have it make it through the day.
I'm running JT's Clean D101 rom, and that's it.
Edit - 32% now.
Get "OSMonitor" from the market (its free) and it will give you a real time display of all running processes and cpu % for each process. To make it easier to watch list open options in OSMonitor and sort by load and make sure order is checked as well. And watch the list for a couple of minutes to see the offender that is hogging the cpu. I've had problems with the xda app and I seem to be the only one that has it hammer the cpu after closing it so I always have to kill the xda app in task manager after using it or else it will ride the cpu between 8-20%.
My typical idle cpu usage is about 2-5% not including the cpu usage of OSMonitor itself.
good day.

Thats about normal time for a Smartphone. If you average that you used 66% of your battery in 8.5 hours, then its safe to say your battery is averaging 12 hours a day. Also, most of your battery will go to your display, and if you texting all morning, your display is going to be on all morning.
It also could be that your in an area with bad signal. Your phone is going to pump juice to try and keep signal.
As far as BlackBerry gos, its not nearly as smooth and capable. I could argue my flip phone from high school lasted four days without needing to be charged. Android is in an entirely different class than BlackBerry.
Is there a definitive process for conditioning or reconditioning the stock battery? I'm on my second fascinate(vzw replaced first one basically because of my frustration with the local vzw store) & I've noticed a big difference in battery life between the 2. First one was completely stock with adw launcher only & it got 16-20 hrs between charges. This one is rooted, some bloat removed, and I only get 8-10 hrs. Using os monitor to look for cpu hogs & so far no improvement. Put all my bloat file extensions back to stock in sys/app hoping to impact erratic charging cause it all started after root. Any ideas?

I'm no expert (standard disclaimer) but I don't think it's a matter of calibrating the battery as much as calibrating the software.
Power the phone down
Charge to 100%
Boot into CWM
Wipe Cache
Go into Advanced, and Wipe Battery Stats
Pull the battery, reinsert, and again charge until have 100%
Unplug, reboot, and run the phone in whatever your normal use is until you get as close as you can to a full discharge
Again power down and charge to full
As I understand it, this process allows the software to correctly read the true charge on the battery. if anyone sees any flaws with this, or anything incorrect in my information, please advise.
Are you using a Live wallpaper? I noticed an increase in my battery life after I turned it off, which is kind of stupid because it should only use CPU cycles when the screen is turned on.

What rom (stock sense look) has the best battery overall. I rooted my moms evo to get her a great battery life but it still seems to be dying really quickly. I am using 4.3.1 kernel. She's only getting around 6-10 hours of battery before she has to charge it. I had the evo before and could get a full day and a half before charging it. I can't remember my setup since I switched to the evo shift. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

That's the best you're gonna get with NORMAL usage and a REGULAR battery. All those users that say they get like a day or two are full of it. They get that long because their phones are sleeping most the time. I've used EVERY rom/kernel combo out there and the best I ever got was about 15 hours. I literally use my phone all day while at work from browsing, texting, calls, facebook ,twitter, and games. There should be a definition for moderate. I consider myself a heavy user; unplug at 7am and my phone last until about 6pm with about 20% left. Its not going get any better than that for a moderate to heavy user. From sense to aosp with the stock battery I just never achieved better results but I'm pretty happy since I get to work at 8am and get off at 5, buy 7pm its nearly dead and I just plug it up. You should invest in an extended battery imo.

I agree to a point. I mean, it all depends on usage. I can believe someone with light-moderate use can easily get a full day with the right setup. I do it now with CM/Savage, but I'm definitely not a heavy user.
I do see some people make wild claims of 2-4 days without a charge.. and I think it's possible IF you don't use your phone or you turn everything that makes it a smartphone off. Which is pointless IMO.
Nobody can really give you the perfect setup because every EVO seems to behave differently. We can only make suggestions. Make sure your mom s awareof all the things that can drain battery (push notification, updating widgets, weather updates etc etc). I would then research a good sense rom/kernel because CM7 is a definite WIP with different issues for different users, it may turn her off.
Maybe check out MikFroyo or Myns rom. I hear a lot about how good they are.

I don't know about not being able to get more than a day of battery life and use your phone. Using MIUI with a Savaged-Zen kernel I was able to go almost 2 days without even plugging it in once (I'm specifying this, because I've seen screenshots where people claim crazy battery life, but the graph clearly shows that the phone was plugged in and charging several times throughout that time period), and my display usage was still 44% of my battery. That was still minimal usage for me. I posted the screenshot in the MIUI thread if you care enough to check.
I do mostly agree, though. Most people posting outrageous battery life have display percentages around 5-10%, clearly never removing the phone from their pockets.
Anyway, as for the OP, the biggest missing variable is that we don't know at what percent your mom considers it necessary to charge her phone. If she plugs it in around 50% to be sure she can make it through the day, that means she could have gotten another 5-8 hours of battery life (assuming she's not draining it down to 0%). This fact could make the difference between bad battery life and a paranoid mother.
Try the ava froyo z3 I love it best rom I've used so far so guess I'm sticking with it o and get her juice defender with ultimate juice and lock it down so it kills anything she's not using

I have the Sprint 2600 extended battery and it isn't as bulky as you would think. I actually think it is less bulky than my 1500 with a case on it. I don't notice it at all and I carry it in my front jeans pocket.

This is exactly the kind of post he was ranting about, dude. Unless you post your screen on time, usage time, up time, etc, then your 24 hours or whatever is a completely meaningless number. Completely. Meaningless.

Also display did not use 44 pct of your battery. It was responsible for 44 pct of your battery drain. Big diff.

I agree with most of you people. Initially went to FreshEvo by Flipz when I rooted and battery life did not change much from when I was running stock. I have since switched to CM7 and battery life is significantly improved. Now getting 12 hours on a single charge with moderate use. I always turn 4G and wifi antenna off when not performing any data-intensive use. But I refuse to kill my 3G data connection when my phone is in my bag or desk while at work. Reality is that it IS a smart phone and killing the data to save battery life defeats the smart phone bit, no email no Facebook syncing no MMS etc. The only time I kill 3G is when I am in the mountains skiing.
My problem is that I work a 12 hour shift so 12 hours of bat life is not ideal. I have invested in an extra charger but would obviously be happy to not use this. I have heard lots of testimony that the savaged Zen kernals show some promise in improving bat life. When CM7 final drops I plan on flashing one of these kernals with the new ROM on wipe. I will stay away from the SBC version though for fear of improving battery charging but having my phone melt down or pop on the night stand next to me while I sleep... or worse in my pocket!
I will report back if I get any significant results.

I just bought it yesterday and the battery like last around 4 he's. Now I bought this phone cause I heard it has great battery life like the Atrix. What do I do? I have juice defender running. Please help

If you just bought it yesterday..... then give some time to calibrate thr battery! Just keep using it and let the battery reach normal. Most new batteries require 3-4 charges to start running fine. Give it a few days

+ 1 the battery needs a few cycles to break in. Also, are you rooted are you running a custom room or kernel these things can have an affect on your battery also.
No I'm not rooted or have a custom kernel. I'm running stock.

Strange, I get a day and a half of heavy use with the brightness maxed and running a live wall paper. I thought my Xperia Arc had great battery life but the Nexus S is insane!
OP are you using task killers? Don't. It takes up more battery for your Nexus S to re-start those apps than it does to manage them on its own.
It took my battery like a week to act right. Give it time

a day and a half?? howd you pull that off? im usually charging about 10-14 hours thorough heavy use.
agree with everyone else, give it a few days.
I used some advice i found the said kill battery, charge full, kill battery, charge full, kill, charge, then use it. Charge it while it is off during that time.
First couple of charges, the battery would die after about 5-6 hours of constant "messing around" with the phone. Now it seems like it'll last a good time.
Im completely stock as well.

I dont know. I don't really game on it so maybe thats it, but I am surfing the web constantly. When I go out I turn wifi off...thats about it. Oh and the only widget I am running is a clock and the weather for the clock is set to refresh every 3 hours "simi clock" is what its called.
Thats about it, I dont know what else to say. I came from an Xperia x10, Samsung Captivate, Xperia Arc, and now the Nexus S and its MILES better...so much so that I have decided that I will only ever own a "Nexus" line of Android.

No task killers here. Just juice defender.

Like everyone else said you really need to give it some time to break in.
My first day with the Nexus the battery was dying as I left work (roughly 9 hours off the charger).
After owning the phone for about a month now it's changed dramatically.
It lasts well through the entire day, every day. Before I go to bed it's usually sitting around...
70-80% LIGHT use.
50% Moderate use
35-40% Heavy use. (Note: I don't play games, Heavy use to me is multiple short calls, many emails, many texts, IM)
I've never actually had the phone die on me.
I'm using CM7 (Latest Nightly) and the Netarchy CFS Kernel (default settings with the exception of VooDoo Color tweaks)
I don't use Juice Defender. Phone sits on 3G most of the day at the office, at home it sits on WiFi with the WiFi sleep policy set to never. (Wifi uses much less power then 3G, if you have WiFi, USE IT! and set sleep policy to never so WiFi stays on constantly instead of switching back to 3G when the phone is idle)
Do use a task manager but it didn't seem to make a huge difference.
Aside from letting your battery calibrate, you should try out juice defender. I know alot of people might scoff at a such an application but I've experienced over a two fold increase in battery life using said application. However I am running an undervolted netarchy 1.3.4 kernel with Oxygen, but said increase in battery life is with the same configuration.
Yeah it takes around a week to break in the battery. My battery life is pretty awesome. I usually charge it every other day now. It lasts a long time.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Guys... battery break in isn't gonna change his usage from 4 hrs to 12 hrs. No battery break-in does that.
In all these cases I suggest looking at battery info in the OS itself to see if something kept the phone awake or whatever.
Sure heavy use in your first few days will always take a huge toll on battery. Calibration shouldn't totally throw off your battery life down to 4 hours either.
You guys who say heavy use, can you quantify that?
talk time per day?
texts per day?
roaming?
4g?
how many emails sent/received per day?
time on internet?
/shameless plug
try battery tweak in dev forums... i posted it in both of them

I'm in the same boat as you. Just got my Nexus S 4G on three days ago and the battery dies QUICKLY. The first day it died in 5 hours (with normal use and 4G off). By the time I unplug it and get to work, which is only a 20 minute drive, it's already down to 93%. I'm hoping everyone else is right in saying that the battery just has to be worked in a little.
I have 8 hours on battery right now with about 40% remaining in day 2 of my Nexus' usage. I made about 6 phone calls, sent out about 20 text messages, browsed the internet while waiting for a job interview and played Plants V Zombies when I was taking a dump.
I really only expect it to improve from here.
Out of curiousity, does anyone here have their "Use Wireless Networks" checked under the "Location and Security" settings (where it uses your 3G)? I have this enabled and I know this will drain my battery, but I wonder how much? The only app I have that updates my location while the screen is off is the stock News and Weather app (which only updates every 6 hours, a bug that automatically turns itself back on if you reset your phone). How much collection would Google do other than that?
Also, the other thing I have enabled is my Exchange set to push through the default Email app. However, this never really shows up on the battery usage app, so is push STILL killing the battery a lot through the stock app?
I'm just trying to see how people can get two days with 50% left after work (if just on 3G). On WIFI, MAYBE, but def not on 3G......
