So, I have been trying to get the TV out option to work properly on my Vibrant using a standard 3.5 mm to RCA composite cable. I have tried 4 different cables on 2 different tvs and also via a Sony A/V receiver. I reset the phone and tried again, and I have also exchanged the phone for a new one, and prior to installing any additional software, I re-attempted to get the video to display properly on the tv.
In each case, the result was the same: audio would play, but the noise was much louder than the desired audio -- too much noise and audio distortion to even comfortably listen to music from the phone. The video never displayed clearly -- it was always garbled, with just enough detail in places to make you believe that video was somewhat being sent.
The cables used were not Samsung specific cables, just standard 3.5 mm to RCA composite cables including a brand new set purchased at Radio Shack. Does the feature require a Samsung specific cable? (None of the comments I have seen suggest that this is the case, though they did not talk about the cable being used at all.)
My tvs are rather old -- both over 7 years old: one is a 55 in Toshiba 720p HD projection screen, though I did not use it with the HD inputs, of course. Just used one of the standard analog video input connections. The other is a Panasonic 27 in digital comb based set.
Has anyone had any difficulty using the tv out functionality?
Thanks
Did you change the setting from pal to ntsc? Or try to flip the red and yellow cords?

Are you using a 3.5 mm plug with 4 contacts and 3 RCA plugs? The ones with 3 contacts 2 RCA plugs won't work.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
All cables used had the 3 RCA out connectors. I generally matched up the colors, but I do recall at least once swapping the cable ports of the connectors into the tv.

I thought you were supposed to use a usb to hdmi connector to have video out. Samsung lists such a wire on their website.
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...detail&subsubtype=data-cables-kits&returnurl=
Yes, the tv out setting was ntsc, though I toggled it several times just to make sure it did not make a difference.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
for most ppl you have to switch the red and yellow connector.
so it would be like this:
Red = Video
Yellow = Right Audio channel
White = Left Audio channel
so make sure u plug the red connector into the yellow port on the TV!
Both methods are supported. The 3.5 mm jack is the most commonly used at this time due to the micro usb to hdmi cable not being readily available yet.
As for switching the connector ports, it did not make any difference for me. Yellow into red, and red into yellow resulted in the same results or lack of results.
It's almost like the tracking is off. One thing I just noticed its that when plug in the cable, the tv menu is also now skewed when opened but then displays correctly when I remove the RCA connectors.

I picked mine up from the local Radio Shack and it works great the quality was as good as it gets for non-hd. (not listed on their website, but they have it in the stores) Part#1603686 With this cable the red is the video and yellow and white are sound. Amazon also sells the exact same cable for cheaper. In the store it is $29.99 on amazon it is $9.95. Beware what cable you buy because from trial and error I found out that some cables will not work no matter what way you switch the colors (they look exactly the same but the wiring to the jack is different). There is a ground on some cables that bridges the audio and video pins on the phone and just causes a buzzing no matter how you plug them in.

So, it is encouraging to know that there have been cables that were proven to be the issue, and not the phone.
With regards the cable purchased at Radio Shack that worked, can you confirm the product number? I ask because the one I bought seems like it might be the same: 16-3686, but the number you listed was 1603686. Actually, as I look at the receipt, it comes up as the same product number you listed.

Might be a dumb question but did you plug it all the way into the phone? I have a silicone case on my phone and if I dont take it off the plug wond go all the way down into the phone.
If it is plugged all the way in and won't work, then take it to radio shack and exchange it for another one, then if it still doesn't work you probably have a bad output and need to exchange your phone for another one. But I can verify that this is the cable I have and use every day and it works very well.
Did your first phone have the same issue?
Thanks, the3dman13.
I do have a sleeve on my phone, but I had long removed it thinking it might be a factor.
Nonetheless, my issue is resolved. As you had confirmed the cable to be compatible, I tried it out on a 3rd tv, and reversing the cables as you suggested worked.
In summary, some cables don't work regardless of how you plug then in, and some (older?) tvs apparently can't handle the signals.
Thanks all for your assistance!
Now if one of my original cables will work, I can save some money (although one had failed already even on the compatible tv.) If not, I will try the one you mention on Amazon.

i have a cable just like this that came with my archos jukebox 20gb mp3 player that i paid 300$ for almost 10 years ago, i wonder if it works. the player didnt do video, but the cable it came with had red white and yellow as well as 3 stripes on the headphone jack.
my phone should arrive tomorrow ^_^
Not sure what the benefit of the rf modulators would add unless they by chance can handle the single better than the built in RCA connections on the tv. Perhaps. It's an interesting idea.
As for the archos cables, these are among the cables I tried without success.

HAS anyone picked up that nokia 3.5mm cable to rca connector on the 3.5mm jack on the vibrant (TMO GALAXY S ONLY!!) to see if video and audio gets sent out? It might only appear when you actually connect a tv... so if you have it check it out and let me know.. with rooting, flash support soon, bluetooth keyboard and mouse... i wont really need a laptop.

I ordered a 3.5mm cable to 3 rca connector last week but it's not Nokia.
I'll let you know when I get the phone.
Yes, both audio (stereo) and video is sent via the 3.5mm cable, used this to watch a movie the other day.

I plugged mine into a Zune (Gen 1) AV cable that I have connected to my head unit in my car...turned on TV out and it worked like a champ.
FWIW, Avatar on the Vibrants is DRMed and it disables the TV out when you play it. You can watch the trailer just fine, but firing up the actual movie brings up a message about not being able to display it on the TV.
Has anyone modified their desktop doc so it can be used to transfer files via the USB connection? I have given up on Samsung making good on the sound output and have opened up the little beastie so I can see what's going on. Headed to electronics shop tomorrow to see about getting a female micro USB connector because I want to ditch the whole circuit board.
Will post some pics of the innards later tonight. Any help or comments are appreciated.

Well, who needs audio. It is in pieces now and going to wire it up so it will charge in the dock, use USB, work with my case on, and have the LED light on.
Got used to this kind of behaviour with my Treo and miss it.

Did you ever do this? Also can you post pics of the dock taken apart. I want to mod mine to accept the extended battery.
PICTURES PLEASE!!!
Also, how did you get it open? It seems tricky.
I'll have to pile on too -- any pics, Top Nurse?
Or even just a quick outline in how you opened it (presumably without damaging it). I can't figure it out -- at least, so long as I'm not willing to start prying in seams with a screwdriver.
My interest in this has peaked because of the awesome mod that someone (can't find the thread to thank him!!!!) put together -- SGS_Dock_Audio_Fix.apk -- that makes the audio out on the docks work automatically, like they should... insert the Epic, audio switches to the dock jack. Remove it, audio switches back to the speaker.
However, the audio is absolutely horrible. I mean, unlistenable, for me at least.
I suspect this is an artifact of the electronics in the dock -- I'm assuming it's not a direct analog transfer of the signal over the USB datapins, but rather a more "standard" use of the dock as a USB audio device as per USB spec, and therefore the actual D/A conversion is happening on a board inside the dock.
I want to mess with it and see if a) I'm right, and b) if I can fix it.
Otherwise, despite the (once again) correct fix for this from one of our community members, it's still for the most part unusable, thanks to Samsung.
Geez, this whole debacle with the dock-out audio for the Galaxy line is becoming ridiculously pathetic and incompetent. Unbelievably so.
Did anyone ever have any luck looking into the issues with the dock. When I use the one I have if I have the charger plugged in the audio has static and if I unplug the charger the audio is better but it seems like I'm loosing a lot of the bass. I might try tearing mine apart to get a look this weekend but if you guys have already done some work and there is no way to fix it then I'd not attempt it.
That's a great idea. I'm so frustrated with how much Samsung charged for a dock that doesn't work at all out of the box. I'd also like to see pictures. I'm using mine right now to cover up the power light on my computer, while I play Skyrim. It's the most useful it's been yet; it's a perfect fit, and I can still see the HDD light flash.
I tore mine apart last night, and actually didn't damage it. I'll have some pictures later to show how to take it apart and what it looks like.
I'm pretty green when it comes to electronics but the internal board is very simple and it really looks like the output from the epic's usb has the audio on a couple pins, then power on a pin and then ground on another. I think the issue may be that everything is sharing the same ground, the headphone jack and the charging circuit share a ground which might be causing the static.
Like I said, I'll get some pictures posted and maybe somebody out there will have an idea on how to isolate the two circuits better... if it is even possible.
Very interested in this. I haz 3 x desk docks (one each bedside for my wife and me and one for my desk at work) and a car dock. I was hella pissed when the line out on the car dock didn't work because I was tying it into the car kit. Been thinking of drilling through the dock's slider on the car dock to hack in a 3.5mm jack but if I can hack the board in it instead that will be a lot cleaner.
Ok I got some pictures taken. Some are good some are not so good.
If you follow them somewhat in the numerical order it shows the disassembly, I used a thin knife to pop the back plate off, from there it was removing a few small screws and then the front plate came off. After that it was removing a bracket that held the micro usb connector on the dock and then also removing a couple screws that hold the small PCB to the back plate. From there you can fish out the PCB and usb connector.
I did some tracing of the usb charger pins to the usb dock connector and from the headphone jack to the usb dock connector.
I've done some testing and it sounds like with everyting torn apart and plugging things in with the PCB laying on my desk the static on the audio is gone but it still sounds hollow. Note this test was run with power being supplied from a computer usb instead of using a wall plug.
I'm really intersted in the quality of the sound coming over the dock usb connector. I think I may pickup an additional headphone jack from the shack tomorrow and wire it to the correct pins and ground to see if the PCB is causing any interferance.
I need to get my wall plug out to test for static from it as well. Maybe there is a difference between using the Samsung one and my old HTC charger to which I've plugged in a micro usb cable.
I'm not sure what the purpose of the LED on the dock is but it did turn on for me when I had it plugged into the computer, I don't remember it coming on when I plugged it into the wall plug.
I'll update with more info when I do some more testing.
Another note is that you can see that my PCB's solder joints don't look all that uniform, seems some of them might have been reflowed and the PCB is kinda dirty for something that seems like it was pretty air tight when the case was all snapped together.
Found this good thread with information about how the phone knows that it has been inserted into the dock. Does some explaining as to what some of the resistors on the PCB are for. I'm making the assumption some of the other ones are for the LED that is used on the dock.

The code I brought into the CM7 ShadowKernel must be just enough to get it functional. I will need to do more research and comparisons with the stock kernel code to see if there is more I can add to improve the sound.

ok so it doesn't look like there is much going on with that board, doesn't look like it could be a DAC at all. so its sending analog sound through the USB port? strange....would be awesome if we could use the voodoo sound stuff with it.

bmasephol, you sure about that?
One of my E4Gs is on stock EL30. I used a pair of IEM to test this. The sound from the dock is tiny, lacking bass. I compared it side-by-side with another E4G running bbelos' MTD CM7 kernel and they sounded exactly the same. I then plugged the IEM directly to the phone's audio out, and the sound was much better as expected. This all says the USB audio route, as has been said elsewhere and here, doesn't go through the onboard DAC or least much less amplified than the headphone out.
But for me it's not a big deal. In the car, the head unit took care of it (just have to crank it up a bit), and at home, a small T-Amp can do the same.
Bbelos, beside xcaliburinhand's another kernel source, you might want to look at drhonk's CM7 Bali kernel. Roy also has other interesting stuff in some of his Galaxy kernels(like BLN!)
Yes - I may have spoke too soon. I did my tests while my dock was still torn apart. Now at work this morning the dock sounds like **** again...
I'm going to take it home and try again tonight. I swear last night while I was listening to it all torn apart it sounded way better.
I'll update later tonight.
is our phone the only galaxy s that has this problem with audio out through the dock?
I'm going to propose a theory... feel free to shoot it down for those who have more knowledge about this than I do... I'm going back to knowledge I had 15 years ago when I used to work for a company that specialized in digital audio products...
A DAC (digital-to-audio converter) is an actual physical electronic component, which obviously converts a digital stream (1's and 0's) into an analog signal to the output jack. The DAC on the Epic 4g is a Wolfson DAC, pretty decent quality DAC with some nice features that apps like Voodoo Sound can tap in to.
The USB connector on the Epic 4g (which the desk and car docks plug into) is just that - a USB connector, which transfers *digital* information. Audio via USB is (I'm assuming) using some protocol which allows digital audio bits to be transfered over a USB connection. Therefore, the audio coming out of the USB connector is still digital, i.e. *not* being converted to analog inside the phone.
The small circuit board inside the dock has an attached headphone jack, and part of that component including the surrounding circuitry *is in fact a DAC*. In fact, I believe it's a totally crap DAC (compared to the Wolfson DAC used by the Epic's headphone jack). So the docks have their own crap DACs which do the digital-to-analog conversion outside the phone. Therefore, I think it's impossible (or nearly impossible) for a phone app to control the dock DAC (like Voodoo controls the Epic's on-board DAC). Only thing I can think of is to use a music player on the Epic that has a built-in EQ which would affect the sound before it hits the USB output. Either that, or try to replace the DAC on the dock's circuit board, or have a really awesome car stereo which can tweak the sound enough to make it tolerable
If this has already been posted somewhere I apologize, there are a couple threads on this general topic and I haven't kept up with all of them...
Edit: if it's not clear that I'm implying this, another point: I don't think it's possible that the Epic's on-board DAC can possibly affect the audio coming out of the USB connector that the docks use
Hooked up my Acer to my HDTV with a HTC cable I had (HTC HDMI Cable - D-type to A-type connector) . I love it, and it works exceptionally well. I have been playing NFS Shift on my 90 inch screen and looks every bit as good as on the tablet screen. I was a little concerned with what the quality was going to be like, but my worries were put to rest. I had my droid x hdmi cable that work with the tab perfectly. It's a good thing cuz I never used it for my droid x as it does not mirror the display like this tab does. I give kudos to Acer for building an outstanding product.

Cable Sensitivity
My HDMI out is very sensitive to the position of the cable. For instance, if I lay the Acer on a flat surface the HDMI out works great. Once I lift the tablet and cause any downward strain to the HDMI connection I lose the signal. If I hold the cable in place while holding the tablet I get the signal again.
Is this a defect specific of my tablet or is this an issue with the connection using mini HDMI? If a few of you are playing NFS I'm assuming I may have a loose HDMI out connector.
Faulty HDMI out
Well I took the Acer back to BB after further inspecting the connection. The HDMI out of the A500 was so loose that the slightest movement caused the output connection to be lost. Best Buy was extremely accommodating including offering to custom cut an anti-glare screen protector that I had applied myself in order to match the product I was exchanging.
We tested the device's HDMI output and all is well. Wel except me having to start over and re-configure a new tablet
Good to hear. My cable should be arriving today but I think I now made a mistake buying a 6' cable. It was only $4.50 so ill see how it works ands will probably get a 15' for playing games.

A500 not connecting to TV through HDMI
Hey all,
Seeing as you are discussing cables and HDMI here, figured this may be the best spot for my question.
I recently bought an A500 tab 32GB and have been trying to connect it to my Panasonic 127cm Plasma TV through HDMI.
Ordered a HDMI to HDMI mini cable (type A to C) and tried to connect the tablet to the TV, but no luck.
The Tab screen shows HDMI connected but the TV screen remains black and there is no mirroring at all.
Any advise? Could it be the cable, tab or TV?
Unfortunately don’t have other devices with HDMI that I could test

I'm sensing a little sarcasm, or at least I hope you have more faith in me than that.
Edit: Now thats weird, audio worked fine on my other TV.
The TV not working has HDMI coming from my Denon receiverinto HDMI 1, but I use my receiver and surround sound for the audio... Just thought of something though, because the TV volume doesn't work for cable TV unless the receiver is off...
I got this cable from Amazon.com, 15 feet, and it has worked fine on two different tv's.
Eh, starting to wonder if the speakers on my TV are bad. I've used my receiver speakers exclusively for a long time and never use the TV speakers. When the receiver is off, the audio is suppose to bypass the receiver and route the the TV speakers... I get nothing now. And no audio on a completely separate HDMI input on the same TV. The fact I got audio on my second TV is enough fto convince me the cable is fine. Time to talk to Best Buy about my main TV...
Sorry if I have missed a thread similar to this but most I find are regarding the port.
I have hooked up my Xoom to my TV but there is an issue with the screen cutting off part of the tablet window. When I plug the cable in a black bar appears above the notification and menu section at the bottom on the tablet window and when it appears on the TV it looks like what is seen here - http://twitpic.com/4sre10
The notification area is cut off and the top right and left corners don't sit correctly either.
Is there a way to solve this as the aspect options on my TV refuse to change in order to make things fit or is this just an issue with the micro-hdmi to the TV?
Thanks
I can't tell from the picture, but its either OverScan or Aspect Ratio. But nothing that can be adjusted on the Xoom.
I had to adjust the picture size on my tv....

Has anyone had any trouble with the micro-hdmi not fitting well in the xoom? I have to hold mine a little twisted or it loses the connection. Trying to figure out if it is the cord or a xoom problem.
I have the exact issue. I'm hoping is the cable, I bought one from amazon, it is not the official Motorola one. I have given the cable to a friend of mine and he said he had the same problem. However, he has the Atrix, which also has a micro hdmi out, and he tried it with the same cable and works fine.....So, either the cable is bad (most likely) or the motorola port hardware design is not the best. I have order the official Motorola HDMI cable so i'll let you know how that goes. But I would like to know if anyone here had issues with the HDMI, and which cable you have.

mine fits nicely, its a dynex
It's probably the aspect ratio. I had to adjust my tv for this. But last time I tried my xoom wouldn't resize to my tv.
This is normal behaviour. The extra black pixels appear to show you what is being put out to the screen. The Xoom will only put out an exact, 1:1 mapped 1280x720 (720p) image, which excludes the menu bar and the extra black pixels (because the screen resolution is 1280x800). The rest of the cut off is due to your TV over scanning. Look for a 1:1/no overscan/"PC Mode" on your TV. If there isn't one, you're out of luck.
I had same issue, figured it was the tv ratio

I had the same issue, added a small price of electritions tape to the top of the connector and it fits nice and snug now

Did you put tape on the metal part of the connector on the cord, or wrap it around the plastic/rubber part of the cord?
I've got the overpriced Rocketfish (Best Buy) cable. It fits just fine.

Display Problems
My TV and Xoom displays occasionally (like every 5-10 min) blank out for a few seconds. The only app I have used with HDMI for an extended period of time has been Clock. One time I even saw the display fill with monochrome static, also for only a couple of seconds. This doesn't seem to happen with other apps, like DoubleTwist or Fruit Ninja, but I have not tested them for long periods of time.
I have a 32" LG (probably European, came from Kuwait) that I guess my Xoom just doesn't like very much. I had wondered about the screen not being displayed properly, but haven't tried anything to fix it as I am only using it for the Clock app right now.
I just got my HDMI cable, so I have only been able to test this with Tiamat 1.4.1. I got my cable for $10 when I bought my case from KeviKev.com [sp].
HDMI out is too loose

Xoom problem. I had the same issue with the Acer A500 and had to return the unit. Once I got a replacement device the issue went away. I do not have this problem with my Xoom HDMI out. HDMI should fit snug and not have to be wiggled in order to get the output to work.
Its your TV mate, its a setting u need to change
This is my second unit and I am still getting intermittent black screen when it is hooked up to my 46" screen. It happens regardless if I'm playing video or not. I use the same cable on my ASUS Transformer Prime and it works flawlessly. Anyone else having this issue? This is becoming quite annoying because I can't even get through a single episode.

There is the chance that this is an HDMI specification implementation issue between the two devices. I have a Samsung HDTV and a PC connected to it via HDMI. Occasionally I will get a black screen for a second or so. In my case its so infrequent (ever several days) that this is not an issue.
Unfortunately I have seen far too many incidences where there are HDMI issues between devices. Just check out the number of people, including with a Nexus 10, which cannot get any picture between their device and a Panasonic TV. They try different HDMI cables and only sometimes will that correct the problem. They try their Nexus 10 and the same HDMI cable on a different brand HDTV and get a connmection.
I suspect that the copy protection "features" in HDMI along with inconsistent implementation of the specification are at the heart of the issue, but that is only an assumption on my part.
It turns out that it was the HDMI cable (even though it worked with another tablet). I guess it was too cheap to work with the nexus.
