im ready to root this thing.... someone said there is a root method is this true?
If you already have root, or rooted before flashing that, then it will run. The only problem I had with flashing the new froyo is that there was no way to do wireless tether, nothing would run.

Other problems will likely pop up. I don't think it's quite ready for prime time.

Hey Guys,
My wife has had the official Sprint 2.1 on her phone for a month or so and has had nothing, but problems. I am sure she would love to go back to stock 1.5 and I know she really doesn't want me to root her phone, but I am just wondering what options I have to get her something more stable. Her phone really has worked horrible since the update, I have been on various 2.1 roms for months and have not had near the problems she has had. Thanks for any ideas.

i say go ahead and root it. i was so scared when i rooted mine but it was all pretty easy. and its almost impossible to brick your phone. and then flash this rom
its the stock 2.1 rom just rooted and literally no issues and a major speed increase. my 2cents
It is not an issue of me rooting her phone. My phone is rooted and has been forever. I flash roms all the time. She does not want her phone rooted, but if that is the only option I might be able to convince her. However I am not convinced anything stock even with root would be a good option.

That is your only option. The way HTC designed this phone you cannot downgrade back to 1.5 unless HTC put out a new RUU to do so(which isn't going to happen).
If she wants 1.5 then you have to root to do so.
My wife didnt want me to root her samsung moment. I did it anyways, and she couldnt be happier. Have it overclocked as well.
Just dont tell the wife...they'll never know. Woman don't like technology change. You have to override that.

I was going to say the same thing. Just root it and flash a ROM and say here you go. She can always run the 2.1 RUU again.
See, your problem is, you need your Wife to be rooted so you can have SU access.
Once you do that, then you can root her phone.....
Well I can tell she is frustrated, when she just looked at me and said "I don't care just get it fixed." Now I just need to read up on how to root a stock 2.1 since I did mine back at 1.5.

i think they make an app where you can just click on it and its rooted. i'll find it real quick
here is the link to that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695698
or follow the GUIDE in the development section. It takes 8 min to root the stock 2.1 RUU. Hopefully she's on the .5 build tho. Very simple
I recently aquired the Vibrant and all I have to say is OMG this is a fnatastic phone. it blows my cliq, cliq xt, and g1 out of the water.
Anywho, the one question I have now that my phone is rooted and has the clockworkmod recovery is when the 2.2 update releases around september-ish, will this effect the phone being able to update like it did for the cliq, or will i be able to flash 2.2 from root and just lose root. i would be ok with it at that point because 2.2 takes care of all the issues that i have with 2.1 update1. the only reason i know this is because i have 2.2 on the g1 and its amazing. any thlughts on the matter?
once rooted on this phone, you have to wait for one of the devs to dump a 2.2 flashable rom to get the update. This is why I am gladly waiting to get the ota before considering rooting. I love the phone as it is.

yeah but I heard that if you just root only, you will be able to get the OTA update as you are still using the stock ROM. But if you are using a modified dev ROM, then yeah it will not auto update.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes this is the case, if all you do is root the phone, you will still get Tmobile updates. You might lose root, but as was pointed out in a similar thread, Samsung doesn't seem to care about locking things up, so you should be able to root again easily.
ok so its more in line with what the g1 used to do if you didnt go onto a modified rom. with the cliq, even if you root and are on the stock rom, you still cant load the ota update because it fails when you try to load it once downloaded. i dont mind losing root once 2.2 comes out, i just want to make sure i can get it. i was thinking of going back to stock without root, but i'm having some trouble getting the phone in download mode

Thanks for the input. Has this been the case for any other phone? Where rooting only will still get you OTA updates, or is this a theory?
Thanks~

As far as updating to 2.2 you should probably wait til one of the devs releases a version of 2.2 that maintains root. If u update to stock 2.2 you may not be able to root without going backwards.
Apps2sd usually gets baked into a ROM and enabled that way and the wifi tether app should work. WHo knows, we may need a modified kernel to get it going
Samsung should release their source code for the Epic 4G once it launches.
We already have the source codes for the Vibrant and Captivate.
My guess - and its just that a guess - is that one click root is already patched in the Epic. We will have to figure out our own root method.

Maybe, maybe not. It could go either way and work, or not work. Regardless, it probably won't take long to find the root path. I'm content using stock for a few days if need be.

Sprint is pretty quick about patching root exploits - quicker than fixing broken software. Look at the EVO - just a few days after release they had an "SDCard fix" that patched root that was found before release. Given not well, because they didn't update HBoot, but still.
It shouldn't take long for us to find a method of root - max its taken so far is like 6 months on the incredible. But I strongly doubt current methods will work, they have had way to much time to be able to fix them.
The good part here is that we don't have to deal with a locked boot loader like Motorola. Those guys have had root since week 1 and still can't load roms. So once we get root, its all gravy.

as far as rooting and recieving the update, yes. The cool thing about clockwork recovery on the SGS is it does not fully flash a Recovery, it only boots into clockwork when you want to install something. So basically everytime you flash etc. you need to reboot into clockwork recovery. When rebooted it goes right back to the old recovery still allowing for ota updates.
I will be trying the 1 click as soon as I get my Epic in... PreOrder is in now. I will let you know as soon as I get it if it's working.

Thanks, now that I've done that I think my Dx feels warmer and battery is dieing a little faster? Could this be?
I was originally worried about updating to 2.2 because I thought it may have not so good battery life. Now not sure if I should just unroot and update to 2.2?
Advice appreciated.

There is an even easier method if you haven't already rooted and you are still on 2.1. It is called "UniversalAndroot" and I used it when I was on 2.1. It is so easy. No computer necessary. Just download the .apk to your phone and then install and run it. It is just an app. You can choose...
Temporary root until reset.
Root.
Unroot.
I can't remember the exact wording of the above- but it it very easy. I was a little nervous- so I did the temporary for a day. Rooted and reset a couple of times without any problems. So then I just went ahead and rooted.
Here is a link to the file in my public dropbox folder...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7782384/UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk
I encourage you to go ahead and google for information- I am sure you will be able to find the forum that I originally found the information on. I can't find it now.
Hope that helps.
Thanks, I would just like to know why the phone gets so warm/hot when its rooted and when I unrooted it it got cool again. Whatever it was it had to have drained the battery. Now I'm thinking of going to 2.2 ota upgrade. Would you guys recommend this or stay on 2.1?

I have heart A LOT of people complaining about bugs in 2.2. I personally couldn't stand it - 2.2 was out there. And I had to have it. So I am on 2.2. If you do jump to 2.2 ota - do your research. I am not sure if you can keep root with ota. I heard talk about moving "su" from "system/bin" to "system/xbin" and being able to keep root - but I am completely new to android - so I am not sure if that is true.
If you do loose root - UniversalAndroot does not work on 2.2 (unless there has been an update). There are a couple of other methods. This one looks the easiest - but was not available when I rooted - so I cannot say...

I'm tempted to root my phone, and install a ROM, BUT is it really worth it? Should I have more patience and wait for 2.2 ROMS? Im worried if I root it now, then 2.2 comes out Ill have to restore it back to stock. I also heard if you have a rooted phone and a major update (like froyo) comes out your pretty much bricked. Advice needed?

Root it. You can always unroot your phone and go back to stock. Ive done it plenty of time. Read through the forums....there are plenty of instructions on how to

You can always flash back to stock if you don't like what you did to it. I end up flashing to stock, then flashing to a rom every other week or so to clean any messes with my phone. You'll learn how to do it right and how to fix. But start by reading the stickies, and asking the guys on irc if you have questions.
I'ld be more concerned that if you get the OTA before you root, that the update will close the exploit and make it impossible to root afterwards. If you root now, you may have to wait a day or two longer for Froyo. But if you plan to root after (or if you unroot for an OTA), you may have to wait a lot longer for a new root method.
Root and ROM. no question about it. We haven't even heard a release date or even a time frame for when the Fascinate will get it. I know everyone bashes me for this but the bottom line is no one has ever came out and said that the fascinate will get it on this date. Maybe the galaxy S is. But not the VERIZON FASCINATE
