Im pretty sure we all agree that the EVO has sub-par notifications. It doesn't have alternative colors for the LED and when plugged in you get absolutely no notification, unless you use that app that I forgot the name of...
But anyways I was wondering if it would be possible to use the capacitive buttons as a Notification source.
Maybe we could have the home button blink for sms
the menu for calls, return for emails, etc. I don't know much about software development and all that crud, but I was just reading this idea on another phones forum and I figured it would be something extremely worthwhile for evo users, and in all honesty, its a pretty dam brilliant idea if we could just get it to work.
don't bash me if its not even possible. I was just simply trying to help my fellow EVO users by sharing a creative thought.
in the theme and app section there is apk that does this already well it flashes all of them for notifications

look at post number 8 for the apk
That app was for the Samsung Moment, it doesnt work on the EVO.....
You know this idea isn't half bad and it may be possible through a combination of the kernel and an application. For reference there is a hack someone made for the G1 that allows you to use the leds under the buttons for notification of the sd card. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685947
That said, maybe we could use this idea to help us with this hack.

Would be awesome.
How are blinking buttons better than a blinking LED?
I think more convenient than flashing the capacitive buttons (which would probably use more battery too) is just flashing the LED for more than 5 minutes (indefinitely), and also flashing the LED even during charging, as I mentioned in this thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712803.

the buttons wouldn't have to flash continuously. It could be just for a few seconds and we can set up reminders like every 5 or 10 mins, that way hardly any battery life is consumed..
I have heard already of this android bug from the Google nexus one forum but now it happened to me too. I had maybe 6 sms threads in the stock android sms application. I sent a question via sms to one person and it appears in the right thread. I get an sms back from another person answering the question. The second person who answered is one of the 6 threads actually in my sms application. This is really a serious problem....
Google has a serious problem to fix. I can't imagine if I sent a text to the wrong person. This is why I won't touch the stock messaging app. Handcent all the way.

Don't feel so safe in the google forum thread people with chompSMS and Handcent could reproduce the same problem. So it's much deeper in the android system.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=39b5123a94a7a99a&hl=en
strange, this happened to me once and i text a lot (at least 3k a month). does anyone know if this is unique to the n1 or happens on all androids?
I ran into this too. It even appeared like i sent it to the proper recipient. I got a lot of wtf?'s later in the night. Did a power cycle to fix it and everything has been cool since I've updated.
My G1 used to do this also, I was starting to think I was alone on this one.
Im not saying the problem doesnt exist, or putting you guys down at all etc, but in my 3k texts a month ive never seen this yet. I guess the closest ive come is trying to quick press a thread added with rotating the screen at the same time = possibly click on wrong thread, and if in landscape you dont see the previous text.
I don't text too much, but I have noticed sometimes the conversation drops off after I send something, or at least I thought I was sending something.
i've never experienced this issue yet either, and i've used handcent since day one just because of this. but i cant imagine the trouble i would have if some of my texts went to the wrong person. seriously.
its possible i'll never know if someone got the wrong text and just never told me...

I never rotate my phone to landscape while texting, so I can exclude this theory. I also realized if you want to copy paste something into a sms it always jumped back to the wrong thread....not satisfied....I text my coworkers and friends and absolutely don't want a mix up of recipients.
This happened to me friend's nexus one today. He was running CM RC1
this also happened to a friend of mine with galaxy s.

It is. I think a lot of people are not aware of this problem. I you only text things like "how are you" you would probably not even realize that you get the answer from the wrong person. If it is delicate some wrong recipient would probably ignore the message instead of complaining. So you never know if it by accident went to the wrong person...
Note to self: be careful what you text until this gets fixed.
people with the original droid also had this problem occur on their phones. its gotta be something with android OS...but what could it be that google hasnt found at this point.
I find that if I text something, then go back to the main message list and try to open another conversation before it has finished "refreshing" it will open a random thread instead of the one I intended to. As far as I know I have not sent a text to a wrong contact. To give you an idea of my usage I have used 2841 messages and I have 10 days left in my billing cycle.
I don't text enough to notice a problem like this, but I'm guessing Google Voice is immune?
Thankfully this bug hasn't happened to me yet (that I know of). Someone hand me the biggest piece of wood you can find (keep your wood jokes to yourself ) so I can knock on it.
edit: I called Verizon earlier and ordered the Droid 2, sending the Droid X back. Reason being, the Android Eyes Free Shell and the Talking Dialer make use of either a trackball or a directional pad. The Droid X has neither. This should also solve the answering/hanging up problem, as im pretty sure on the Droid 2 you can slide it open to answer and slide it closed to hang up. I'm starting a new thread in the Droid 2 General section, but i'll still be watching this one if anyone has anything to add
Ok guys, the Droid X I ordered for my sister arrived yesterday. I personally have an EVO, but I gotta say the Droid X is pretty sweet. Much better designed phone then the EVO, but it is lacking 4g and a front cam (although honestly I dont use those 2 features much anyways). I cannot believe how light it is! My phone feels like a brick compared to the X!
Anyways, this post is not about comparing the X and the EVO, it's about setting up the Droid X for a blind person. My 25 year old sister lost her vision last year from diabetes. I'm hoping to setup this phone so she can use it on her own to make/receive calls and text messages, use the TiKL push to talk app, compose/read emails, have facebook updates read to her, pandora, that kind of thing.
First thing I'll need to do is get rid of the lock screen, not ideally made for a blind person thats for sure! I'll probably try and set it up with a "shake to unlock" app.
Secondly, the first thing I want her to be able to do obviously is make and receive calls. Problem is right now she cant slide to answer a call. I'll need to replace that somehow so she can answer the phone more easily. Any ideas?
SOLVED (double tap home) Next of course is dialing a call. The Motorola Voice Dialing thats built into the dialer is pretty awesome, we don't have something like that in HTC Sense. I need her to be able to press a button on the phone and start the voice dialer. The only way I know how to do that right now is using the search button which launches the google voice search. That's not what I want, I want her to be able to use the one that Motorola built into the dialer, as it's much better designed for a blind person. It re-reads your command and asks for confirmations that that is indeed the right person, and if it's not it goes down the list of the next closest match. The google voice search feature does none of that. If you say "Call OneStepAhead on Mobile" it just starts dialing, it doesn't ask for a confirmation. Any devs out there that could figure out how to remap the camera button on the side of the Droid X to launch the Moto voice dialer? It's for a good cause!
Once I get these things resolved I'll move on to things like facebook. A 25 year old girl with over 1000 facebook friends not being able to use facebook anymore, well, its practically the end of the world to her!
Thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to help with this task, it's very much appreciated.
By default you can press the home button 2 times to get voice command to dial. This should help with your voice dialing.
A phone with no keys is probably not the best for a blind person.
Get her a basic phone that accepts voice commands
Don't mean to be rude, but its not like she's gonna be browsing the web or looking at the big screen.

Double pressing home auto launches the voice command function. You can do almost anything from there.

One way I can think to allow her to answer a phone call without having to know where to touch on the screen id to have her use a BT headset. Then all she needs do is press the button on the headset to answer.

umm, actually thats exactly what she'll be doing. maybe your just ignorant to disabilities, but blind people DO use the web, facebook, twitter, youtube (yes youtube), and everything else. and actually touch screens are ideal for blind people, you can use gestures with your fingers, and the bigger screen the better. it's very difficult for a blind person to use tiny little keys on a phone. are you even familiar with the Android Eyes Free project? I fail to see the point in your post, I'm not asking you which phone I should buy, i already bought one.

yup, thought of that. i ordered one last week, should be here soon. the problem with a bluetooth headset though is it can be an easy thing to lose if your blind! im hoping she'll use the headset a majority of the time, but we still want a way to answer the phone without one.

THANK YOU!! That was a big help, now she can pretty much do anything on it! I'm assuming the Droid 2 will work the same way. Awesome!!
I saw you had the evo, grate phone, I am working for sprint, and a girl from work and I both whent out and bought the epic, very nice phone, and if your sister is looking for a good phone she can use, the epic has the slide out keyboard, and eyes free shell now takes advantage of the touch screen, i've been completely blind all my life, and have used talks on nokia phones, mobile speak on windows mobile phones, the iphone and now the epic, the only thing i don't like about the epic is there isn't a quick way to use the talkback feature by turnning it off and on, though now that i've rootted my phone i might be able to figure out a way to rute a key to the talkback software both activating it and deactivating it, not sure though.
anyways, hope your sister's phone is working fine for her, have you found a good app that works for twitter for her? The built in fb app is crap, removed it with titainum backup, so i don'th ave to have that crap on my phone, do most fb work via sms and sutch.
anyways if you want to chat with a blind person using android since start of oct for questions and sutch, send me a pm
michael!!
--Sprint, epic user.
With a Droid X it might be a good idea to go in to Settings > Accessibility > Power Button and check the checkbox (it allows you to end calls by pressing the power / unlock button on the top of the phone. I use it my self as I have a fondness for physical end call buttons...
I'm noticing that the LED flashes only some of the time for things like Twitter and SMS. The notification bar has the update on it but the LED seems to not want to play ball.
Has anyone else experienced this or similar? I know the LED works because it shows when charging and when the battery was low it flashed. Specifically I use Touiteur and had the LED set to blue but even on the standard green it's hit and miss.

Mine doesn't flash when I get email, but seems to work for SMS or missed calls.
I was hoping someone would make a thread about this, I never got around to making one!
Mine flashes for everything which is annoying!!! I get a lot of emails so is constantly flashing! I've tried going into Settings -> Display -> Notifications and deselecting everything except Missed Calls and SMS/MMS but made no difference!
i'm so used to Magic 8 colors... shame DHD has only orange and green
also it somehow tends to turn it off after a while being on.
I've sent an email to HTC to ask about it since it's a big issue to me. Notification sounds feel similarly hit and miss so I'm suspecting some trigger is being missed, possibly due to the new Sense UI. I'll post any reply I get.

I've got two led's. One for the battery on the right of the speaker and one on the left behind the speaker. The left one is for notifications only n I must say I'm disappointed as its located being the speakers its not as visible as I would like it to be. Is there anyway to get the battery led to function as a notification led as its not covered so much more visible?
I've got a reply but nothing helpful. So far it seems they're willing to blame app compatibility. I've asked for information regarding any changes that have been made to the LED notification system on the Desire HD and now I wait for another reply.
I told them I had no such issues on two other Android phones and they seem to be implying that the apps are coded for specific phones when we all know apps are coded for an SDK version. To quote the part of the reply...
"All the functions/programs you mean are made for Nexus and G1/Dream most of the times, Desire and some other are similar enough for it to work. Cannot help you with third party software."
Pretty clear the guy doesn't have a clue about this so I'm hoping if I nag long enough he'll pass me on to someone with more knowledge.

I see two LEDs up top but charging uses the same LED as the notification system. The left one behind the grill. I haven't seen the second one light so it's probably the proximity sensor.

Another really pointless reply from them.. in the initial contact I mentioned the camera being misaligned so that's what the first part is referring to. Here's the latest reply and below it is how I have just responded.
Dear <me>,
Since receiving your e-mail i have looked for any more known cases and was unsuccessful if you are concerned that this may cause issues i recommend that you take the device back to the retailer.
Regarding the LED,
We do not give developer support so i cannot help you with this.

Response to it from me..
Hi,
With regards to the LED notifications, I'm not asking for developer support or any support in fact. I'm simply trying to find out if HTC have changed the method for using them with the Desire HD. You said that programs are coded for specific phones and I'm sorry but that's not true. They are made for SDK versions, most going as far back as Android 1.6 for widest compatibility, so any changes in the programs affecting the LED notifications would show in ALL versions, not just the version shipping with the Desire HD.
This again points to either HTC changing something with the Desire HD or a programming bug with the Sense UI in some way. I realise this isn't an easy issue to look into but it is a very important one and while I appreciate you're trying your best, I will not let this issue drop until I get a more satisfactory answer.

To me this is a very big deal because if you leave the phone for a few minutes and aren't close enough to hear an audio notification the LED is what I rely on. Missing notifications like this I might expect from a custom ROM but I haven't touched the phone in any way like that. I didn't see your reply in time to mention the GMail issue and I only have my experience to go on which is Twitter updates not always firing. You should raise a ticked too, the more we get raising the issue the better the chance they'll look into it.
i stop sending tickets to HTC last year... they never fix anything.
I rather find a perm root and put CM onto it!
Their latest and seemingly final reply seems to have something that may point to an answer. Unfortunately I lack the knowledge to check if it is of any use. The guy suggested any changes would be in the Kernel and linked me to the source code area. Is anyone able to look into the source code and see if there are changes to the notification LED system for the DHD? It's pointless not useful to ask app developers to look into it until we have something concrete to point at as a cause.

I asked Cyanogen about this and he thinks the lights driver he wrote for the G2 may work.
Being a basic user I have no idea how to try that out without instructions so... I've done the fact finding, who's going to help with this part?
My email LED notification has not been working properly, sometimes yes but mostly no.
Got email mid morning today, sound and LED worked. Left it in this state for several hours still okay. Just got another sound notification for the same previous email, how does that work
Think this is yet another bug....
I've now had this happen with the GMAIL app so I'm bugging them some more.
Would there be any point in posting in the development section to ask for help using the G2 lights driver from Cyanogen?

I've also had GMail fail on LED notification and SMS! It seems to be random now. Coming from a WM6.5 defector I quietly smile to myself
I think I figured it out and if im right it's really stupid. I had two notifications earlier, one for Twitter and the other for e-mail (not gmail). The LED wasn't flashing for either. I opened Touiteur to view the updates thete which cleared that notification and straight away the LED began flashing for the e-mail alert.
Why one notification would disable the LED if it's already on I have no idea but the above has happened more than once now. There's an LED test on the phone which HTC had me test. It has other tests too for anyone curious.
Key this into the dialer.

I just read that the always on display so far shows only text, Email and missed calls. I'm owning a moto x and the active display is one of my favorite features. Especially that it shows me a preview of the message and the sender. So I know whether it's worth to open the app or just dismiss it. For those who already got the phone, how do you deal with that? Any 3rd party apps that supports the always on display and whatsapp.
Hey,
Unfortunately, it is not like the active display, it only shows missed calls or messages no 3partyapps if need one like the moto active display u can download the app " Ac display its almost the same like the moto one here a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay
And a screen from the always on options and possibilities

But in my opinion its a nice feature so u got always in time
Greetings Paddy-
Thanks Paddy,
I played a little bit with acdisplay the last days. Do you know how I can make as a always on display? It only pops up when I have notifications. I would like to use like samsungs active display for testing.
Just received my pre-ordered S7 EDGE. To cut it short, with no ROOT or other tweaks at the moment, the AOD only shows missed calls and text messages (not even e-mails). So although a nice attempt, if fails lamentably. It is only really useful if you want to check the time or battery power most of the time.
Also, off topic, the edge display is also nice, but not actually useful since it does not pop up when screen is off and a notification arrives.
Just my 2 cents.

Yeah it's really just a way to check the time. using a 3rd party text app (google messenger in my case) you don't even get the text. All i get is the missed calls and time and battery. I'm ok with that though. I get notifications on my Gear S. the time and battery are usually the only things I look for if screen is off. If I get a blinking LED i know i have a notification waiting anyways.
Agreed that it's a bit limiting at present, but looking at other areas of the phone (themes / camera) Samsung have added options to download additional functionality. They'll almost definitely do something similar to always on display!
If you ask me, I think Samsung quickly implemented the Always-On screen after their "spies" found out that LG will have it, or maybe seeing the V10 success with the second screen. Otherwise I really can't understand why would you bother to implement such a useful feature in such a horrible manner. Who uses SMS these days ? Almost no one. Yet missed SMS messages are are part of the feature while missing any other useful notification. Even their own email application doesn't use the feature. I really hope that the next update brings huge improvements on this.
I remember in my S6 edge there was the Edge display which could be always on with ROOT and Mods.. And laso it would show new notifications. Hopefully development will start soon as we have Root

Careful about your assumptions, there are plenty of people that still use SMS (such as myself and most of my friends/family/coworkers). That being said, I agree the implementation of this basically misses the point, unless you just want a desk clock.

All major retailers in Romania offered pre-orders. I've got mine with the gear vr for a really good price. Mine arrived on the 9th of March as well.
My question is: can be the what's app, facebook, gmail ecc notifications on AOD implemented by software in the future?
i use the always on feature all the time ,but like the rest of us, i wished it showed part of sms message if not all and the email message who the call was from etc , would be good if could just reply as well ,i think i am getting ahead of myself there lol
