I recently aquired the Vibrant and all I have to say is OMG this is a fnatastic phone. it blows my cliq, cliq xt, and g1 out of the water.
Anywho, the one question I have now that my phone is rooted and has the clockworkmod recovery is when the 2.2 update releases around september-ish, will this effect the phone being able to update like it did for the cliq, or will i be able to flash 2.2 from root and just lose root. i would be ok with it at that point because 2.2 takes care of all the issues that i have with 2.1 update1. the only reason i know this is because i have 2.2 on the g1 and its amazing. any thlughts on the matter?
once rooted on this phone, you have to wait for one of the devs to dump a 2.2 flashable rom to get the update. This is why I am gladly waiting to get the ota before considering rooting. I love the phone as it is.

yeah but I heard that if you just root only, you will be able to get the OTA update as you are still using the stock ROM. But if you are using a modified dev ROM, then yeah it will not auto update.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes this is the case, if all you do is root the phone, you will still get Tmobile updates. You might lose root, but as was pointed out in a similar thread, Samsung doesn't seem to care about locking things up, so you should be able to root again easily.
ok so its more in line with what the g1 used to do if you didnt go onto a modified rom. with the cliq, even if you root and are on the stock rom, you still cant load the ota update because it fails when you try to load it once downloaded. i dont mind losing root once 2.2 comes out, i just want to make sure i can get it. i was thinking of going back to stock without root, but i'm having some trouble getting the phone in download mode

Thanks for the input. Has this been the case for any other phone? Where rooting only will still get you OTA updates, or is this a theory?
Thanks~

Thanks, now that I've done that I think my Dx feels warmer and battery is dieing a little faster? Could this be?
I was originally worried about updating to 2.2 because I thought it may have not so good battery life. Now not sure if I should just unroot and update to 2.2?
Advice appreciated.

There is an even easier method if you haven't already rooted and you are still on 2.1. It is called "UniversalAndroot" and I used it when I was on 2.1. It is so easy. No computer necessary. Just download the .apk to your phone and then install and run it. It is just an app. You can choose...
Temporary root until reset.
Root.
Unroot.
I can't remember the exact wording of the above- but it it very easy. I was a little nervous- so I did the temporary for a day. Rooted and reset a couple of times without any problems. So then I just went ahead and rooted.
Here is a link to the file in my public dropbox folder...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7782384/UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta.apk
I encourage you to go ahead and google for information- I am sure you will be able to find the forum that I originally found the information on. I can't find it now.
Hope that helps.
Thanks, I would just like to know why the phone gets so warm/hot when its rooted and when I unrooted it it got cool again. Whatever it was it had to have drained the battery. Now I'm thinking of going to 2.2 ota upgrade. Would you guys recommend this or stay on 2.1?

I would go to 2.2, then re-root.

I have heart A LOT of people complaining about bugs in 2.2. I personally couldn't stand it - 2.2 was out there. And I had to have it. So I am on 2.2. If you do jump to 2.2 ota - do your research. I am not sure if you can keep root with ota. I heard talk about moving "su" from "system/bin" to "system/xbin" and being able to keep root - but I am completely new to android - so I am not sure if that is true.
If you do loose root - UniversalAndroot does not work on 2.2 (unless there has been an update). There are a couple of other methods. This one looks the easiest - but was not available when I rooted - so I cannot say...

This is another method. I used this one. It is not as easy - but it is not that hard. Here is the link for the method I used...

So i was following those announcements about the froyo official update leak, so I went ahead and downloaded it to my Epic 4G, now they are saying that Sprint announced that the leaked update is not approved and therefore shoukd not be downloaded, I want to unroot my phone, but will it unroot it back to the Eclair version successfully or am I going to have problems with the phone?. I've read about the one click rooting and unrooting, but is it really safe to do so?
Whoa... too much here to cover in a small space. Since this appears to be your first post I suggest you start reading. You have many options and with just about as many pitfalls.
Is your phone working ok? If so, why worry now. Wait for a future update.

Yeah it's my first post here, but i've been reading instructions on how to root and unroot. My phone is working perfectly fine with the leaked update. However, when Sprint releases the official update, will the rooted phones receive the announcememnt and will we be able to update it? lol

rooting your phone does not block official ota updates, flashing custom kernels and roms will. also if you do not delete any sprint apps (nascar, telenav) you should not have any problems upgrading to new updates ota.
All I did was install update.zip of sdcard on my phone nothing else. So is my phone rooted? I have no custom roms or anything just the installed dk28. I'm gonna be able to update ota with this installed right?

dk28 would be considered a non stock (ie custom) rom
no you will not get the update ota.

so i did the same thing, downloaded the update.zip file, put it in my memory card and updated the phone using the recovery mode, so i'm not rooted just flashed, and wont be able to get the OTA update from Google?, btw im having a bit of troble with the GPS, when i enable it it say im abot 20 blocks away from my actual location, however, when i connect to a wireless network, per say my home network the location is right 0.o
other than that, the phone is working just fine
I have rooted and upgraded my Wildfire to 2.2.1 from 2.1, worked fine and still does, but i have lost root.
I have read that i cant use the "unrevoked method" yet to get root back as it wont work with Froyo. Is this true or is it safe to do so.
If I cant use that method then can anyone suggest another way.
Thanks and be gentle as i am new to android.

Hi, if you updated with OTA update (official) or with RUU, you can't root. We have to wait until some depeloper find out the way to root the new HBOOT.
I updated with a file called signed_121810_120233.zip if that helps.
Anyone know about that file, if its official or RUU

I'm downloading it to see if it has the new HBOOT. Give me a minute
EDIT: It doesn't contain the new HBOOT, so you should be able to root. Trying Unrevoked is safe. If you had the new HBOOT, it would hang, but you wouldn't have any problem.
For what I read, you haven't run Unrevoked yet. Do it.
Thank you for your time and effort, i will try it later tonight when i get back home.
Will post and tell you the outcome.
Thanks

You have done this in the same computer you did the time it worked, right? For the HBOOT drivers in windows and all these things.
Looking at the zip you sent me, you should be able to root, but I guess that if you lost root, there is something that made you lose it. :S
If you want to try to get root anyway, try Unrevoked in Ubuntu. If not, Superoneclick, or Z4root.
But doesn't look good to root by now... :S
Yeah the exact same pc that i first used to go from 2.1 to 2.2.
Is Z4 safe to use

Yes, the worst thing that can happen is that the phone is slow until you reboot, if it can't get root. But htese methods are Temp root. It would be just to see if you can get root access, which I doubt at the moment.
Thanks for your help, i think i will just wait until unrevoked gets updated.

Of course. I just tried with v3.31, which must be the version you tried. I got your same error.
I will let you know. It must be near, because in v3.3 changelog they say "No update for Wildfire yet, sorry", so they are working on it.
So froyo is leaked and installed and all is fun (seems to run a bit slower than 2.1 to me, especially during start up) but I have the problem of A TON of bloatware.
Anybody played around yet? I've frozen a few of them but unsure of what all is good and bad.
How about root? The newest version Z4Root does not work, it stalls and you have to force close it.
got a link to the 2.2 download?

this is the beta version that was leaked out. Go thru all the steps to get the free download, the waiting and blah blah blah.

Hi!
Well, I made some post with the info that good people make available and that I collect to try to make it easy,in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211799
I already made the update since 2 days ago and very happy, in my case I found very usefull that at leats by now some usefull 2.2 tricks are very welcome like move some apps to sdcard and few other, but as new detail in my case the 2.2 update is detecting one of my 2 batteries as non original moto, and refuse to charge it, but in 2.1 it works perfect and could be charged...
So, for me is stable and hope that could be better the final release (if it may really happen, since Moto put down the page about the release.... :-/ so could be lucky that at least we have this beta, for possible future roms)
Best regards!
Froyo runs faster and it has a great file explorer built in. The only thing that sucks is that there is even more bloatware from AT&T
I have the phone unlocked and in Canada so my unlock stayed and unknown sources is still available after the upgrade
hope there are some edits soon they get rid of all the bloatware, there are legitimately 12 bloatware apps from AT&T on the phone now.
The interface is a little bit sleeker and the boot up of the phone is now silent, which i love since the old boot up was a bit to loud.
xaser, your guide is what I followed to do mine and I really apprecite your time to put it up. Worked great.
Somebody said the full update is up on moto, anybody got a link? I couldn't find anything.
No I have not tried an older version.
Anybody had any luck with a root on the beta? Or the full version either one?
Are we sure this "beta" isn't the full version? The Android Version in About Phone just says 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.2b like i'd expect with a beta.

Use caution... I flashed back to 2.1 once by simply following the guide in the development forum again. But tried to do it again this morning and my phone bricked. So I had 50% success which is too little for me to suggest it.

Why Motorola make the phone so un-opensource!!!
I know the only issue I had with reverting my Flipside was the RSD software, 4.9 wouldn't detect my phone but 4.5 worked perfectly fine

I didn't need to reflash, I used RSD to downgrade. Since I had my phone rooted. then I just ran the official upgrade and it's been running like butter for me, real smooth.
I've searched all over for info on rooting froyo on the Flipside and it looks like it's going to take awhile because they locked the phone down tight and the few guys that have rooted the phone have started experiencing problems with the phone because of the root.
