Hi all, i've recently upgraded my radio rom and os to radio rom 1.41 and os to wm6 now i know that with the tytn breeds i.e mda vario, tytn, spv M3100 u can get speeds of up to 1.8meg from 3.5g. I'm on t-mobile uk using a debranded spv m3100 the phone show's up the H sign and when i click on it it say's t-mobile (Hsdpa) but my speeds have been slower then 3g for the past couple of days sometimes http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed say's that my connection is only 120kb/s other times it's 300kb/s. once i've had 895kb/s from the connection, at the moment it's showing up on the phone 4 full bars and the h to say i'm using hsdpa & getting 160kb/s with 3g i've had speeds of 333k/bs , other times my signal strengh drops right down to 1 bar and switches between hsdpa & 3g like every 2 minutes or so, i thought that once u've got a hsdpa enabled phone & the area where your using it with your network is hsdpa enabled u should be able to get 1.5meg (t-mobile uk max hsdpa speeds) or is there other things to consider, i have got hsdpa enabled on both the phone & my account (on w&w pro) & the mast for the network is right in front of my house & it is hsdpa enabled for my area so that should'nt make any differnce surly, hope somebody can explain how come my connection on both my phone & laptop is up & down more times then a tart's knickers instead of staying still. thx my spl for my phone is 2.10ipro & the phone is sim unlocked & supercid aswell

Well 1.5mg is ambitious but 500 to 1000 is in reality more like it.
Less than 500 is not HSDPA. Have you enabled the HSDPA on the phone. It's off by default. Secondly there are cases reported where T-Mobile say it's enabled their end but isn't and it takes 2 or 3 calls to different folk before it really is.

Hi mike yes hsdpa is enabled on the phone as i've checked in htc-tweak what came with the rom i'm using and it does show the H on the screen also it show's up t-mobile (hsdpa) and i have rang up t-mobile to have it enabled and they said they would send me a service txt out but never recived that, and i've rang up twice and they keep saying that hsdpa is enabled do i need to ring them back up to make 100% sure that i have got enabled ? thx on one last note hsdpa is enabled as i've just done a test with http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed again and clicked on the 600 file and got a massive speed increase from when i last tried it, it was around 200 kb/s this time a stonking 905kb/s the second time i tried i got 1000kb/s does the speed vary @ times of the day as the 905kb/s & 1000kb/s is the very first time i've seen them sort of speeds from the connection, usally between 400 - 600 kb/s
I don't know if it's the upgrade of the radio rom, operating system or what now as I,ve just done another test with dslreports.com/mspeed and got a bloody low speed of 20kb/s no wonder web pages were taking about a minute to appear on screen and it's dropped right back to 3g and 2 bars in signal. Have I messed something up in the phone? for hsdpa to be like this? or am I going about it all the wrong way
1, hsdpa is enabled on the phone (it show,s up next to the networks name t-mobile hsdpa)
I have sethsdpa.exe /enabled in config.txt in windows on the phone and yes I do have SetHSdpa.exe in windows
3) is the version of the radio rom I use the problem that is 1.41.00.300 downloaded from xda itself thx again as I,m thinking 3,ve bricked the phone somehow
Your experience sound pretty much like mine. I am also using my M3100 now on T-Mobile. I have been informed that ordinary 3G will only give you highest speeds of approx 250kbps - 320 kbps so anything you are getting above that is HSDPA.
Also using dlsreports your results will vary quite a lot as the size of sample 600k to 1meg really isn't enough to give you an accurate reading. You should get something like IPDashboard or another gprs monitor with a graph and download a file from a known fast server preferably with low pings. Monitor that speed and see what it averages out as you're downloading it if you want an accurate idea of exactly what you're getting.
HSDPA is also dependent on usage, it doesn't matter if the transmitter is in your garden, if there are a lot of people using it then this will affect your speed.
speed does matter on where you are located and the number of channels available to your device's hsdpa chip. i do encounter the varying speed at the same location depending on the time of day no matter which device i used
thx all for the replys, i seem to have fixed it for some reason speeds have synced quite nicly now and staying still at between 950 kb/s - 1000 kb/s, if you wanna know what i did, i went into start, settings, connections usb to pc and unticked the box for advanced networking for activesync, rebooted the hermes as i was trying to remove the orange splash screen and cant get mtty.exe working as it says cant connect to usb port or something like that, so i rebooted the phone and decied to come to xda's website to find a answer and omg the web site tock about 0.1 sec to load instead of having to wait about 5 secs for it to load, so gonna do some more testing of the connection without the box ticked to see if it has settled down, if it has i'm gonna be laughing me face off and it's nearly as fast as my home broadband connection then as that's only 1meg what does that usb to pc advanced activesync do anyroad and why would that make any differnce to speeds over a usb connection? thx again

Oh I remember some info on here somewhere on the things you could do with Advanced USB to PC connection. However the general guidance here is do NOT check the advanced USB>PC connections box - basically this can screw up the active sync connection.
But, what possible connection this has to your HSDPA connection I don't know. Maybe it has nothing to do with it and it was just the re-setting that cleaned things out and improved the connection.
Anyway, your speeds now look pretty decent/good
Mike
Mike been using me laptop all day with my i dont know wht u can call it now spv m3100 or tytn over vpn back to the office so i can remote control the servers there and the connection has never gone down past 900kb/s always staying around 1meg, so it does look like the connection has stabled and i hope it stays like this , but i'm gonna lose it on wensday for a few days as i'm gonna be working in Norwich and cant get 3g or even a good signal for gprs where i'm going, nver mind at least starbucks has t-mobile hotspots which i have an account for, thx again, @ the moment a radio staion i'm listering to is buffering like hell over hsdpa, doesnt do it on the phone tho with resco radio :-( i know why that it is got vpn going, downloading email & chatting to the missues aswell as downloading some files from xda, no wonder it's slow lmao thx agian
I can confirm that unchecking the "Enable advanced networking" box *seems* to increase my speed, but I can't explain why. Ran 5 600k speed tests at dslreports.com with it checked, speed averaged 210kbit. Unchecked, rebooted, average went up to 621.
Just a simple poll to see how many people have worse 3G stability after the radio update. Personally, it's really bad for me.... I'll get about 5-10 mins of 3G (4 bars) access before it decides not to work in any app. To use data, I have to switch over to Edge which works 100% of the time.
I still get the same 3G as far as I have noticed, but I'm seeing some strange data rates: just tested at 903 down and 789 up. I've had more than a few of these results, even some where the up speed is higher than the down. All since the new radio. App I'm using is speedtest.net FWIW.
Hmmm... I did notice my 3G is faster but so much less stable. I still can't access the 3G since I started the topic. Hopefully someone else from Oklahoma sees this thread... maybe it's just my area.
I can get on EDGE all I want... I just can't do 3G, regardless of the fact I have 4 bars of it. It just pings the server every 5 secs and gets nothing in return, almost like the server is either refusing it or not there. I wonder if I have a bad APN?
I'm using the stock 2.1 rom+update from the other day... I installed a small superuser+highmem hack from modaco just to root it. No other mods/themes have been installed.
I believe the bars are just relating to standard voice connection status not the quality of your 3G. I could be wrong though. I think you can have a great voice conn and shoddy 3G and vice versa.
In Chicago and I have the same issue. I had no 3G problems before the update and now my phone constantly switches between 3G/Edge/no service.
My battery life is also very very poor now due to this.
Not very happy. Half the time I get no 3G at all now whereas before I had 4 bars almost everywhere.

Still having the problem... but after selecting T-Mobile, it now is showing the "upload" as solid instead of pinging every 5 secs... but I still get nothing downstream.
I play HomeRunBattle3D a lot and it constantly gets a weak connection or drops me out of the game.
At work I have 3G in only 1/2 the office now...
I flashed it to help but it def makes it worse for me.
I just applied the fix from above and will check back here after a few days...
I flashed this and I am using CM5 beta4 not sure if the E79 update has something else in the software as I dont think CM5 is using the OTA fixes yet so maybe the problem is there?
mine is difinately worse as well. Also after choosing tmobile network I think it made it even worse again. I assume this is similar to the problems others were having with the old radio when mine was fine. I was just hoping to maybe get some better reception with the new radio because that was lacking a bit.
now in my office where I used to get 3 bars 3g my phone is sitting here with 2-3 bars Edge. hmmm...I must admit though that it is browsing much faster on Edge than it was before...? Possible the roms are reading the radio incorrectly?
I used the phone on ATT edge before switching to tmobile and I was impressed by how fast even browsing was on ATT edge especially when Tmobile 3g didn't feel too much faster after I switched over. Tmobile edge was also dog slow. now Edge seems to have sped up a good bit....I might try flashing the stock rom for now and see how that does with the new radio.
Looks like those that are having issues are not running the stock rom (but have the new radio flashed). I'd be willing to bet switching back 100% stock (2.1 update-1)would resolve the issue.

I'm running stock.
Just to update everyone... I've had a good solid 3G connection for the past hour or so... with no hiccups.
*crosses fingers*
I'm beginning to think this is an issue on T-Mobile's end...
EDIT: Nevermind... there it went again.

I have not yet received the OTA update and I am seeing similarly large upload numbers today as well (it just started happening as of this morning). This is in the SF Bay Area. I'd be willing to be that they are more due to network upgrades than any changes in the 3G radio.
I'm on stock N1 bought on launch date. I had fine 3G before update and fine 3G after update. I would say I'm in 3G 99% of time. It even goes into HSDPA when I begin to surf and and when pages are done loading its back to UMTS..I've maybe only seen Edge once or twice since I've got my phone. I'm on Tmobile in Louisville .
It's been about the same pre/post update. It's rock solid 3-4 bars 3G w/HSPA most places, but bouncing between 3 bars of EDGE and 4 bars of 3G, with it usually being 2 bars of 3G at home. Before updating, it might have received one less bar everywhere.
3G seems to be around -100db, while 2G is around -70. Plus or minus 10db.
mine stayed the same, almost no 3G almost always edge, but now my GPS does not work.
Nexus on vodafone spain
I just had a single annoying problem related with 3G BEFORE the update...
And after the update...gues what?
It´s more of the SAME:
-Everytime I receive or make a CALL...my 3G connection switch to GPRS and doesn´t recover unless I change over Airplane Mode.
Please...tell me that I´m the only one
3G was fine before the update, and now rarely works, and takes a long time to start when it does.
Im in San Antonio TX and before update, my 3g would go to edge every now and again. Not too big of a deal really. But after my update (I did the OTA manually thanks to the forums! ) I get 3g constantly and have yet to see the edge pop up.
My connection is definitely much less stable. I now strugle to load pages when I have a 3g icon and at least 2 bars of signal. Before the update I had no trouble loading pages even with a really weak signal. Something is definitely ****ed with this half baked update.
I also posted athread on google support forums, please contribute your findings there as that i the only place where google can actually see feedback.

My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again
Hello Everybody.

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.
First I apologize if this has been covered in another post - I searched but couldn't find and if so a redirect would be appreciated.
I'm trying to determine just how fast data can be pushed through the phone and I've run into some problems.
I'm trying to use speedtest.net to do this and it was working with the stock ROM but since I've been trying different ROMs (3 of them in fact) I always get the error "Missing License Key" in he Speedtest.net window.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Since that one doesn't work I've been using the Speedtest.net mini. That at least gives me up and download speeds.
But I've also found that whne I connect to the internet with WiFi the speeds are almost slower than a decent H connection.
It's rare that I get over 3 down /1.5 up on a WiFi N connection that has 20+Mbit Comcast connection behind it.
Here I'd just like to confirm if everybody else is seeing the same thing:
What dl/ul speeds are your seeing with your HD2 connected to a fast wireless router?
On the stock ROM it wasn't much higher than the 3G.
Not for me, I usually get 13-14 Mbps down/ 50 kBps (stupid cable upload speeds) up on wifi and around 1.8 Mbps down/ 1.5 Mbps up on HSXPA/UMTS.
I personally have very little faith in the reliability of numbers from speedtest.net
Try testing this way...use IE instead of opera, and go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest (it wont run in opera but will in IE). When I use that method while connected to my home wifi, I get the exact same speed my desktop gets using the same dsl source (just a hair over 5MB down), which my 3g connection here has yet to match...usually caps out at around 3MB or so.
I've seen the same behaviour as the OP.
My Wi-fi speeds are slower than my HSPA speeds.
I had same issue as well. I had bsb tweaks installed. I disabled the wifi n tweak. after that both my 3g and wifi speeds went up. Re-enabled the tweak to see if speeds would be reduced and this time only the wifi speeds increased again. tweak must of been causing some sort of issue with the 3g and wifi speeds. Try disabling it, soft reset and than re-enable the tweak. Hopefully it works for you as it did for me.

Which ROM are you using and how much faster is it? Do you see a large speed difference with a different ROM between a fast WiFi and 3g/h?
The only real difference I noticed between the stock and 3 other ROMS I've installed so far is that I wasted a long time trying to get WiFi working in KAOS but never could. I was able to get a connection but the client never reported an IP address. Turns out the ROM I was using was not specifically for the TMOUS HD2 so maybe that was the cause.

My situation is reversed; the cable manages 3mb up on the PC but the 3G/H is almost always much slower on upload than download.

Thanks, that was an excellent suggestion; I hadn't tried this particular site before and while it uses the same data as speedtest.net it also allows a specific destination and works with IE.
In random testing on WiFi I got around 7-8Mb down, 3 Mb up. While driving around the local area I got 5 bars from two different towers and found an average 1.0Mb dl, 0.8Mb up, and that was pretty constant whether moving or stopped.
I've also noticed in general that the "H" only appears whenever data is actually being transferred (sounds like our back-end hasn't been upgraded). Right now I can get neither the speedtest.net nor the mini version to work - the windows just stay white.
I'll keep trying both of them to compare over the next few weeks but I think the biggest part of the problem is Adobe Flash. There is a reason why Apple doesn't support them and I don't think it's all political like Adobe would have us believe.
I've also done some more experimenting with mobilespeedtest.com as well as general testing over the past few days.
Mobile speed test shows that IE seems to be faster/more stable than Opera - by probably 5 to 20%. While the absolute numbers had alot of variability, Opera was unable to complete the 5 MB and 7 MB tests at all; the browser window just remained blank.
The other thing to throw in here while trying to clean up the phone I found the post about doing a hard reset and that also seemed to help. I don't have any solid data but I would certainly hard reset it again and recommend it to anyone that has changed ROMS much or done a lot of installing/deinstalling of cabs.

I don't have BSB tweaks installed currently but I performed the WirelessN tweak in the registry. Based on what you've said here I went back and switched it off, did a soft reset, tested and then back on and retested, and found no dramatic difference between any of them. What I found was a lot of variability between the tests in the same setting - even one right after the other. (I would probably do well to review the wireless router settings to see if I can up the data throughput rate.)
To compare I checked a notebook using N located at about the same distance from the router and got speeds a little (5-10%) faster than on the phone (-hardwired into the router I get 25Mbps down). This tells me the phone is as optimized as it's going to be going through my router.
So on the phone I see final scores of about 7-8Mbps down, 2-3 up, with spikes over 10 Mbps down and 4 up during the tests.
Deeted - error post
I tried "mobilespeedtest.com" and get around 1100-1300 kbps on wifi and the same or more when wifi off and using t-mobile (with "H" showing, not 3g).
speakeasy/speedtest on wifi 3421 kbps, off wifi , 3569 kbps (3.57mbps)

By how much roughly? Are you also on the stock ROM?
That certainly jibes with what I found on the stock ROM using speedtest.net.

No, Not on the Stock ROM.
Like Opera Mini and Skyfire, I think Opera Mobile 10 goes through an external server. One cannot get an accurate speed test that way. Use Opera 9, or better IE, as it works with flash speed tests as well, not only the mobile ones.
Hi to all SGS2 fans out there
I'm a happy user of SGS2 but I noticed some problems during WCDMA usage. After few minutes of using 3G/HSDPA connection is still looking good on the signal bars but I'm unable to open any webpages/android market etc. I have to disable and re-enable data connection in settings to get it back working... for another couple of minutes..
Secondly I have short breakups during calls. When I'm talking to someone the phone mutes for a second. It doesn't happen every time - but it's quite often.
I'm currently using Lightning ROM 1.5 - but I had the same issues on 1.4, 1.2.
When I'm using GSM only - everything is fine.
Do you think I have a faulty unit?
I'm getting a similar issue. Currently on VillainRom 1.4. Full 3g bars but cant use browser, market, etc.
hi,i have just sign to forum now,i was looking around and seems like very populer here.
Anyway i have same problem here plus when i have 3G or HSDPA on my bar it is changing every few seconds (for example a few seconds staying 3G and a few seconds staying on HSDPA,not stable and non stop) and seems no stable and killing battery.I have already change my phone and sim for this reason under my warranty,if anyone give advise for this problem it will be really helpfull, thanks.
