Hello,
As (hopefully) the froyo update is coming soon, I was wondering if I will need to back up my apps?
Will a major update essentially wipe my phone?
Also I use the stock HTC backup, but how do you restore using this? I have had problems in the past using a different sim card and loosing all of my scenes / homescreen layouts.
hanging out for the update bad! (hoping for better battery life, speed and UI polish)
EDIT: Guess not....
"The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense. The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC's App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, through the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won't delete any of the phone's content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a WiFi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.
This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks' time."
The recent news about FroYo coming this weekend all relates to Desires... anyone have any news on the Legend?
I doubt that the Legend will get the update at the same time as the Desire, the Legend will probably get it later. Correct me if i'm wrong though. Or maybe someone can Email to HTC Europe and clarify with them about this.
the fact that HTC hasn't mentioned the legend at all in their talk of 2.2 and setting a date for the desire etc tells me that it's def not going to happen at the same time, or very soon, unless they just thought they wouldn't bother telling anyone in the case of the legend
True.
Its not looking good eh!

Legend is not sold n China, at least it's not listed in HTC China's website. The second link don't mention Legend at all. Of course we know the update will come.. sometime.
Desire owners got the froyo update today! I hope the legend will get it next weekend.

A Dutch translation via online translator equates to:
"Hear good bulletins. Use itself HTC Legend, therefore I must still just as have tolerated…"
Also, translating his whole Twitter page to English shows the message as this:
"Hear the good news.
Use self HTC Legend, so I have to wait ..."
Where are our Dutch colleagues??

I don't know what it means, perhaps someone dutch can let us know.
He says he uses a htc legend and he hears good news..but we will have to have patience
I hope we get Froyo SOOOOOON!
Thanks for translating! Not the good news we hoped for but at least its encouraging...
Great news overall...just relax & wait
But one question..i'm so excited about froyo..but i know we wont get flash ..but is there any way to make it work somehow?hmm
I agree with sian88, but I'm guessing he's trying to imply that it is not going to be long before the Legend get's an OTA Update (I'm Dutch too).
Be patient! I hope there will be some new stuff in Sense though.
I thought instead of waiting Id go for a full rooting and 'hack' 2.2 on.
It is far from straightforward, i got stuck at heaps of points, but i got there in the end.
Is there a way to restore you phone like in an iphone style where there whole phone/apps are restored seamlessly?
I will say to all of you hanging out for 2.2, its not that different and (surprisingly) i miss some of the HTC sense stuff on the 'plain' rom im on.

HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 pegged for mid-March
By Chris Ziegler posted Feb 9th 2010 5:35PM
We've known for ages that HTC's been working on yanking its custom-skinned Hero off of Cupcake's rusty frame, but so far, the only way to drop Android 2.0 or 2.1 on your phone has been to cheat, root, and load a custom or leaked ROM in place of the official first-party firmware. If you're too straightedge for that, though, keep the faith -- your binary isn't too far off. PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in "mid March" according to HTC's Benelux team, and it'll feature a new Friend Stream widget that aggregates user updates across services (presumably a nod to Blur), tweaked Exchange support, and a handful of other goodies. This isn't necessarily indicative of when Hero versions in other regions (Sprint's version, for instance) will pick it up, but it's a solid start.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/09/htc-hero-update-to-android-2-1-pegged-for-mid-march/
blah wtf!!!. Its good dont get me wrong but still sketch on the sprint update
Ugh, I'm sick of waiting. T-Mobile here I come.
And thats from HTC. So we can expect an additional wait time from Sprint doing their crappy app tweaks. Maybe they will finally get Sprint tv working.
This isn't necessarily indicative of when Hero versions in other regions (Sprint's version, for instance) will pick it up, but it's a solid start.
I heard from an HTC rep that for Sprint it will be Feb 22.

Along the same lines...If sprint were to post their update after the HTC official drop does that matter? Can't this be flashed directly to our phones (with out the sprint apps obviously)?

I think Sprint has to handle getting their network settings configured, so the Hero knows what to connect to.
I just talk to an HTC rep today and they said the same thing.
I sure hope it comes soon since the Droid is getting theirs this week according to this website

So if what the HTC reps told the two above posters is correct (not holding my breath), would it be better to go ahead and go with HTC's 2.1 or wait until one of our devs cooks one up?
By the way that this forum is looking we should have a pretty good looking 2.1 here pretty soon anyway. Just wondering.

As soon as the HTC update drops, our devs will have it re-released for rooted users.. Probably within a day.
In short, if it drops, I'd wait at least 24 hours prior to installing the authentic version, because it'll close the loophole you used to root in the first place.
will we be able to go back?
Say we flash the rom the day it comes out...im dieing to try it... will we be able to use the recovery tools to unflash or will it somehow kill our recovery tools?

From my experience with the PSP, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR PHONE! Give it a few days to make sure root is still possible or doable.
I'd wait until a dev cooks up a rooted version so you don't lose root.

hi guys!
HTC Italy had confirmed recently via twitter that bad news (anyway, we expect it)

It says that 2.1 update for HTC Tattoo is not planned just now, but really it says that we never see an official update from HTC. Bet that HTC engineers have encountered problems making work camera and radio...
Our only hope is in our awesome "RomCookers" (such as fyodor, ikxdf, jacob and much more). i will donate as soon as possible for me, the work of those men is fabulous!!

Does´n´t mean that much anyway. I´d rather have my rom from the devs here than HTC. Take for ex. the original froyo from HTC to Desire. It´s very buggy. In contrast the opendesire rom from AdamG is the nicest and cleanest rom I´ve ever seen.

I think that we won't see an update foot the tattoo, ever!
You can see the issues Htc has to face with sense and the hardware in the Kiljacken-Rom - overclocking made it useable, but still you are permanently running low on RAM. SenseUi in my opinion is the biggest problem and Htc isn't going to throw it over board just to give us eclair or froyo...

Question:Hello
Can you please show me , how i can share some pictures or other files with my friends, via bluetooth? I havent figured out?
ps: when you expect android 2.x to be available to upgrade my phone?
Asnwer:
Dear Mr. Q Thank you for contacting us, We apologize for the delay in answering your email, Kindly be informed that you will need to search on the Android market for a 3rd party application that could help you install this feature as it is not a default feature in the handset. As for the upgrade, currently there is no plan to upgrade your phone to Android 2.1. The result of our analysis showed that an upgrade to your phone may impact the user experience and we ultimately decided that an upgrade was not recommended. Your phone will still receive support, and we thank you for your patience and understanding. Please note that you can contact us via support line. Hi Daniél, Thank you for contacting us regarding HTC Tattoo. Unfortunetely there is no planned Android 2.1 - 2.2 upgrade for the Tattoo. You are welcome to contact us again for further assistance. Best regards, Elsa H. HTC
2nd time I asked I mentioned that now when the newer phones like Desire got it's 2.2 and the older Hero got its 2.1 update, is there any plan for ANY update for the Tattoo?
Answer was August 6th 2010
Thank you for contacting us. Regarding your enquiry about Android 2.2: We cannot comment on what devices may or may not get an update just yet. Any announcements will be made through our Website, Facebook page and Twitter feed. Please keep an eye on these channels for any updates regarding your handset. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thanks for contacting HTC.

We, Russian users, started spamming HTC for 2.1, but we got the only reply that we won't get 2.1 because of perfomance lowerage. But such words they said about Hero, but the users fought for 2.1 and got it! Now, I think, it's our time. Yes, there is Wildfire with 2.2, but they CAN release the Tattoo firmware 2.1, they just don't WANT to do it. I ask all of you to join our war against HTC marketologists! We MUST get 2.1!!!

Ok, I'm in too... so, what's the plan? How to fight for 2.1 upgrade?
There's nothing you can do with fighting for an upgrade. HTC doesn't want to. You have to accept that. If you really want 2.x go to the development section of the forum. You will find a few roms there. They are not working perfectly (Camera and FM don't work and some minor bugs) but at least they work. If you want to do something for a perfect tattoo 2.x rom you have to help the developers in building it. If you're not skilled in developing yourselves you can help them as testers.
Hi, not long had my DHD but it came with Stock Firmware from Orange so I successfully installed 1.32.405.6 which is all good so far!
I now want to upgrade to gingerbread 2.3 which looks good from what I've seen on youtube! Just want to know if there is an upgrade guide online anywhere? Also will I be able to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 in the future if I don't like it?
I also noticed that a few of the 2.3 roms have a few glitches with certain things not working on the phone. Is there a stable release where everything works properly as it should?
I prefer to wait for HTC to release a 2.3 version. I am sure the usual suspects will do a great job optimizing it.

i just want to know that is it possible to downgrade to froyo if i need to due to some operator related issues?
Looking forward to your kind reply.
Thanks in advance.
There are rumours about Android 2.4. Google is going to do an Android Event on Feb 2nd.
I think they will announce 2.4 officially & I think HTC is busy with updating the HTC Sense to this version of Android.
But who knows, let's hope HTC won't give up with updating our beloved Desire HD
now that would be nice.. Looking forward for it.

Yep. I was able to flash the leedroid froyo rom after just to see if i could. But for restoring froyo backups i think you need to reflash CWM 2.5 (because you will then be using CWM 3.0.0.5 to flash gingerbread).
Is it really needed to take half a year to get a damn update? If we eventually get 2.3 when will we get the next one, after 2 years?
The mobile manufacturers are really doing a bad job with their updates, and we need to put some pressure on them.

it's just something you have to live with, once you've got the phone they lose interest in you and try and attract new paying suckers customers, if you want the latest and greatest go with the custom ROM's i.e cm 7 which tend to be at the head of the field

And what do you consider a 'good' job? Diverting all resources to updating the DHD? What about the Desire? Or the Hero? Or all the other phones? Or maybe you think that because you bought a DHD, that's the only phone that must get updates? And what about developing new ones, so the company doesn't fall behind the competition? 2011 will see boom of tablets, dual-core CPUs and whoever knows what. According to your logic HTC should make one phone and dedicate to supporting it for years. It might work for Apple, but that's because no one but them makes IOS devices, so they don't have the same competition, as all Android manufacturers face from each other. HTC are doing the best there is regarding the updates. If you feel that's not good enough, you can always try a community ROM, HTCs devices are the first that get them anyway.

Just been to that link and saw this written in one of the posts
Here is a litte guide for using fastboot:
First of all you need the newest Android-SDK. You get this here
After installation (or extracting for Mac/Linux) copy fastboot into the "tools"-folder. You get this here
Your phone needs Engineering HBoot, have a look here
Now download CMW 3.0.0.5 into your tools-folder.
Now reboot your phone into the Bootloader, plug in USB and on your PC switch to Terminal/Command. Change into the tools-folder.
In terminal type:
fastboot-mac flash recovery ace-cwm-3.0.0.5.img
and press enter.
(If your using windows it's just fastboot and on linux it's fastboot-linux.
You can flash a radio by copying a radio.img into the tools-folder and type
fastboot-mac flash radio radio.img

Yeah sure, but why do you really need 2.3 what is really as much better?
They should make better Apps and better Engines for Games first before they make all these versions.

Me too..
Maybe a stupid question, but is there a changelog of 1.84 update? Or is it 1.72 but with SMS notification & SD card fixes?
I wouldn't worry about the delay in receiving the new update from HTC, when the ROM section has some excellent, optimised, images to use.
Setting up your phone (root, downgrading if needed, S-off, Eng-off) to flash ROMs is simple and safe - I managed it without having much Android knowledge simply by using all the guides posted in this forum - I would recommend you go that way.
from what i understand, 1.84 is actually an older build than 1.72 - i know the numbers dont make sense, but i think that is what mike said wo the ACTUAL newest one is 1.72

Really? Wow..That's confusing
Meh, it might have some older libraries, but it is basically a step forward as it fixes many bugs and so on. It also has better performance, so I do not understand why mike actually said that..

Maybe HTC found some problems with newer libraries, so they use back the older & more stable libraries

Well there goes your path to root. Unless you had gfree'd and had Radio S-OFF.
(And posting it for devs would be great )

Going by the results of the G2 update, will you not loose S-OFF too as there is a new bootloader?

I am reading on svetandroida.cz that when you write sms with HW keyboard then it is doing spellchecking which is not possible to switch off and it is in english. Meaning that when we write in our native language we get a "red sea". The autocorrect from I to I'm was a minor annoyance but this...
Also some people are reporting that sometimes the sms is not sent.
I really hoped that since we waited a bit longer then the HD and other HTC phones we get a better version..
I feel like it is time to downgrade instead of upgrade and root this thing..
I confirm the spellcheck stuff.
