More a T-Mobile question than a G1 question, but no one knows more than this community, so here goes:
I just got a Vibrant and want to possibly give my G1 to my son, who has no data plan on his line. I think he's less than a year into his two year contract with a cheap little Motorola phone. He's okay with using the phone without a data plan while he's out and about and just using the wifi when available, but if I recall, T-Mobile used to automatically add a data plan to the line when activated. Do they still do this and if so, is there a way to avoid this? The G1 is rooted, btw, if that makes any difference.
Yes u still need a data plan according to T-Mobile. Thankfully we have xda modders. Lol. Go to g1 section and search for how to activate a g1 without a data plan. That will fix u up. Good luck

It shouldn't be a problem. If you installed one of Cyanogen Mods roms, you can register via Wifi by skipping it and setting it up than linking up your Google account after.
T-Mobile adds a data plan when your phone is being activated.

i followed this and it worked great!
If he USES data, he will be CHARGED for it. If he wishes to NOT BE CHARGED FOR DATA, be sure to disable data usage.
OP is asking if they automatically add a data plan when a new SIM card is detected. No, they do not!
If your son doesn't know about root, UNROOT IT! T-Mobile will not charge any data usage if there is no data plan. I have a friend with no data plan and unrooted and he is unable to use any data. Market will not load without wifi and same for browser or any application or function that requires data.

Don't be so sure of that!
With most carriers, without a data plan, it will be on PAY PER USE!
Actually i have the same problem here. i want to get an samsung vibrant without a contract on ebay. but i don't want to use data plan. i am afraid that tmobile will add an data plan for me as well. so the answer to this question will help me as well. lol

They can't legally charge you for something you didn't agree to.
Did you agree to letting them charge you for that? If the answer is NO, then they can't legally charge you for it.

Easiest way to avoid any issues:
Download APNDroid, APN on/off widget, etc, and turn 3G/Edge/Gprs off. I'm not sure if you will still be able to send and receive MMS though. You will need somebody else's simcard with a data plan to activate. I am unsure if JF's way of activating through wifi applies to the vibrant.

Isn't the data plan tied to the sim card ? Rooted or not ? I have 2 lines on T-mo acct., girlfriend doesn't have data, I do. If you switch sim card to a different phone, she "still" doesn't have data. I do.
Just tell T-MO no data on that line.
One of my friends switched from an iPhone and now uses 50% more data on the Aria (but still under 1GB).
I convinced another friend to switch from iPhone to Aria but he is worried about the new 2GB data plan because he used 3-4GB per month on his iPhone. Think he'll be screwed?
(I guess I got lucky that they kept me on an old unlimited plan)

It all depends on how you have the phone configured/use it. I use more data simply because I was downloading nightly releases of CM6 directly on the phone, and had sync setup for gmail. But once I stopped downloading nightlies, my usage was about the same.
They can't take away his unlimited plan if he's just upgrading.

They do take it away since it's an iPhone data plan so it's not grandfathered in like the PDA plans are. All my friends that went from 3gs to android lost the unlimited plan.

I ordered it using an upgrade for a second line... so thankfully I still have my data plan (until they scan the IMEI and automatically change my plan which will probably be in a month or two)

Booooo, at&t...
I got to keep my unlimited plan when upgrading from a WM phone to Android.
My data use went up, and I'm using more than the fiancee who has a 3GS, and she uses her phone more than I do.

I used an upgrade on an iPhone line (my wife's) to get my Aria - and was told that the iPhone unlimited data plan was only able to be grandfathered if the upgrade was to another iPhone, so I lost unlimited on that line. Apparently any other data plan (BB or standard smartphone for WM or Android) could be grandfathered to each other for upgrades.
I came from a BB 9700, and my max data use with that device was 200MB in one month, with the average around 100MB. With the Aria so far, I am averaging around 400MB per month. I don't stream a lot of media, and try to do most of my downloading when I am using wifi. I believe most of the increase in data usage for me comes from much more frequent use of the browser - it is just such a better experience with Android. I often tried to avoid opening the BB browser due to how slow it was. Other than my change in browser use, I pretty much use the Aria for the same things as the BB.

they tried to do this to me and i complained! so they kept it for me
i used about 10 gb per month with my iphone (no lie!)
and i use about the same with my aria
im probably one of the reasons why AT&T put a data cap sorry
P.S i used it for tethering thats why (dont tell AT&T)
My data usage is higher, but the phone is also much faster than my 3G so I do more with it. On a side note they let me keep my unlimited data, and told me I was grandfathered in.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
My usage has increased as well coming from an iPhone 3gs; but only marginally. I was allowed to keep my unlimited data plan as well with no hassle. Granted my iPhone was stolen so I gave at&t quite a bit of money for an "early upgrade". They may have been concerned I'd just pay the early term fee and jump to another carrier.
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know if any other devices than the HTC Touch Vogue work with Bell's unlimited mobile browser to provide full data? I am interested in the Touch Pro specifically.
Thanks!
No.. Not 'legally' anyways
But I'm too lazy to look into that myself.
nothing I found. I finally just bit the bullet with my new sgs and got a $25 data plan.

Hey guys.
I know it's weird.. But since the day I started using a HTC Touch Vogue (old one reactivated on Bell's network), I have unlimited internet for FREE. I have a prepaid plan and only pay the 35$ unlimited nights and weekends from 6pm and unlimited texting. But I get that free internet.. I can tether and all, and that's FREAKING SWEET. If I ever buy another phone, I'll keep this one just for Bluetooth tethering. The internet works only if I have something enabled on my phone. Just need to get the 5$ 250 texts.

Have you got your first bill yet?
It's a smartphone, the internet will work as long as the radio is on unless you disable data separately (which changes to default on after a soft reset or turning the phone off then on).
If you get billed up the A**** just ask for the UMB (unlimited mobile browser) plan, it's $7 nowadays and includes everything. With NFSFANs, or VIN's ROMs you can tether undetected, or use the winmo version of PDAnet to do the same thing.
I got a great deal for a used Iphone and have been using it for the last week. I had to switch data plans to the iphone only but I love my Tilt 2 and would like to use both phones but inserting my sim card into my Tilt 2 will only let me use voice plan but no data. Any apps out there to fool att in thinking I am using the iphone when I am really using the Tilt 2 so i can get data.
Instead of using the MediaNet connection, change the Tilt2 to use wap.cingular and it will be invisible to the network.

MediaNet IS wap.cingular, it's the APN. AFAIK, ATT only has two, and the other is for Paying Thether users.
Hm, I have a similar concern as well.
Currently I use a tilt 2, but my friend has an old 3GS that he doesn't use. I have a grandfather plan of unlimited data under tilt2, but I plan on playing with both.
Does anyone know if I inserted my Sim into the iphone, if it would mess with my data plan.
Regards,
K

Actually, it isn't. I created a new connection using the wap.cingular as my connection and then set it as my default connection for all usage. Now, when I log onto my AT$T account online I no longer see my phone or am able to access any info about (minutes/data used, etc.). If I switch back to MediaNet the phone miraculously reappears in my account. Something about accessing the network directly using wap.cingular changes how the network sees the user.

It will definitely mess up your plan. ATT will read the IMEI number on the phone as being an iPhone, and they will switch you to the iPhone plan. Furthermore, not completely sure but I think that once they take a grandfathered plan off your account, you can't get it back. So I wouldn't mess with this, and risk losing the unlimited data plan.

Figured so! Thanks! It's not a big deal to me as I have an itouch as well. WifiRouter + Tilt 2 + itouch, I would take over iphone anyday! (takes away all the programs that only require wifi problems away for one!)

I am still using the unlimited $15 data plan I originally got with my RAZR V3. Updated to an Incite and now the TP2 (both bought off Craig's List) and they still haven't changed my data plan to a required Smartphone plan.

There is no such thing as an "itouch". Please call the product by its proper name, the iPod Touch.

Are those phones ATT branded, or not (seems like at least the Incite would be)? ATT seems to be pretty good at picking up the IMEI numbers for their branded phones. But mostly have no way of knowing the IMEI numbers for non-ATT subsidized devices.
I've read of some users on the ATT forum of having their data plan changed the same day, after inserting their SIM into an iPhone that they got from a friend, etc.
Both are AT$T-branded phones. I don't know about iPhones, but they can't change your plan without your permission or without you changing your contract. Changing phones does not qualify as a change of contract since the contract is for service, not phones. Every time I call in for something they try to get me to switch my plan, but I tell them I don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited plan. They tell me I'm not supposed to be on it with the phone I'm using, but they are powerless to do anything until I either change it myself or upgrade my phone through AT$T and sign a new contract. Not going to happen anytime soon as I'm very happy with my Tilt2.
My wife & I have been with AT&T for near of 7 years now, and we are on the grandfathered unlimited data plans for both my tilt 2 and her *gulp* iphone4. We recently had a house guest, and we activated my wife's old iphone 3g. It too was instantly put on the grandfathered plan, as well as the rest of our family plan.
Adding a line does not "qualify" with AT&T as a contractual change UNLESS you buy a new phone. If your recycling an older phone, or you out right bought another one from some place else.

WiFi Router requires a cell data connection, and allows you to share it with other devices. How does that help in this case???
Can I use an messaging phone data plan with an off-contract AT&T brand Atrix? Or do I have to wait for an unlocked international version with the right bands?
I have used this "cheat" before with WinMo phones and T-mobile phones (for edge data) but I have not tried it with a branded Android. Has anyone else had success with something like this?
Will it work if I set the phone to only use 2G data? Thanks!
No. As soon as the imei hits the network a data plan will be added. You gotta pay to play.
i used a an Nokia N97 NAM for about 8 months on a "dumb" phone plan. Maybe the Bell version or UK version Atrix can be used on a "dumb" phone plan??
not going to happen with the atrix
i put my sim car in
att knows it within minutes
how do i know they know ? they got a picture of the atrix in my account under my device when i logged into att.com
the bell desire z is your best bet (fastest as well) with using a dumb phone plan without getting charge

If you use a phone that AT&T doesn't sell it'll likely work because they won't be able to identify the phone model from the IMEI. If you use a phone that they do sell, they'll catch it immediately.
