List of APKs to remove for leaked Froyo - Droid Incredible General

Here you go folks. I saw other posts asking for this so i made a list for ya!
These commands can work on other roms too.
READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU RUN THESE COMMANDS!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Do NOT setup accounts with the VZ backup assistant, facebook etc. before you remove these their apk's, otherwise you will have FC and possible boot loop!
2. Make sure you reboot your phone in recovery and mount system and data.
3. The following apk's (with the exception of the first one) are renamed to .apkb and can be restored back.
This is what worked for me. I can't guarantee your results.

Thanks for this. What about the .odex files? Not everyone and all roms are deodexed.

If i have some time i will work on the .odex removals but i can't promise anything.
FYI, there was discussion about 2.1 and a de-odex patch here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727820

Just going to throw this in here as a word of caution. I know some people may want to remove select items from that list above, so...
Removing Friendstream kills your ability to sync Facebook contacts with your phone's contacts.

Im fairly new but have a semi firm grasp on these kinda projects but Im curious this looks like different command lines then what I read in a different thread and that I have been using. Before you enter these command lines is there anything else you have to enter in terminal such as sdk because this is what ive been following.
1. Download the Android SDK and unzip it onto your desktop
2. Rename the folder SDK (this is for easier terminal navigation"
3. Reboot your phone into recovery from the main menu select Partitions Menu then select Mount/System
4. Now open up terminal and type cd desktop/sdk/tools hit enter
5. Now type ./adb shell hit enter
6. Next type mkdir /system/app.disabled hit enter
7. Next type mv /system/app/VZW_MyVerizon.apk /system/app.disabled hit enter
8. Next type mv /system/app/VZW_Skype.apk /system/app.disabled hit enter
9. Next type mv /system/app/VzNav.apk /system/app.disabled hit enter
10. Next type mv /system/app/VVM.apk /system/app.disabled hit enter
11. Next type mv /system/app/CityID.apk /system/app.disabled hit enter
12. Now type Exit hit enter
13. Now on your phone in the partitions menu select mount/system

Is this the best way to get rid of these apps and widgets? About the only thing that I use is Backup Asst for my contacts. I use FaceBook but NOT the HTC version because I don't like it linked to my contacts. The rest of this stuff is all garbage that I want to get rid of on my phone now that I've got Froyo.
I can't stand that I have to use task killer all of the time to get rid of Swype and FootPrints amongst other things. I don't even use the damn apps.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: and is this REMOVING the apps or moving them? Thanks.

It's simply renaming the apps so the phone doesn't load them. They are still in /system/wherever and can be restored by changing the name from .apkb or .apkwhatever back to just .apk.
Your phone won't recongize them so they won't run or be installed but are very much there. In android it is always good to just rename things then to delete them...fc's and no way to restore them for some can really mess **** up.

Thanks for this. What about the .odex files? Not everyone and all roms are deodexed.

you should be able to substitute the .apk with .odex
eg.. /system/bin/mv /system/app/HtcFootprints.odex /system/app/HtcFootprints.odexb
this should work for all files that have a .odex file, if there is no .odex file for it, you will just get a "no such file" or something like that and you can move on to the next file.

I know...but not everyone else does...and a lot of people here couldn't run adb without having their hand held or copying and pasting so I was just askin.

I figured you knew, I was just quoting your post so other people knew what I was posting about.

Not really sure which app did it but moving one of these put my phone into a boot loop and I had to do a nandroid restore.

Thanks to Honestly for the info. I'm always a bit nervous about completely deleting something when I'm not to sure about what I'm doing in the first place.
EDIT: I wasn't able to get Teeter, CityID, or My Verizon to work. Is it because they don't read like the rest? Example: /system/bin/mv /system/app/VZW_Skype.apk (THIS PART MISSING IN THOSE THREE~~> /system/app/) VZW_Skypeb.apkb

Thanks for the helpful info

If you setup some accounts such as Facebook and the VZ backup before you removed the apk's you will have FC and possible loop boots. Otherwise these commands should not have created any problems.
The best time to remove all these programs is right after you install the rom.

yeah vz back up assistant FCs on me when i try to get into sync but i can't remember how to push the file back under adb lol

Hate to bump an old thread but....I want to remove a bunch of apps I don't use. I have a program call "File Manager" which has a setting for "root explorer" and a setting to "mount" system as writable. Would it be acceptable to rename these files from within that application? I would assume at that point a simple reboot and they would no longer show up in my app drawer?
The stuff I don't use is:
Facebook
Friend Stream
Peep
Skype
Quickoffice
Slacker
Teeter
VZW Backup Assistant
DSP Manager
Twitter (though its not in my app drawer even though apk is present in system/app)
Flickr (again, not in app drawer)
Carpanel
I also noticed that there are two apks in there as well for things like facebook. There is facebook and htcfacebook. Would I rename both of those?

You can rename them, move them, delete them (not reccomended), or use an app like titanium backup and several others to freeze the apps. You can rename all the facebook apks if you do not use facebook on your phone at all. If you delete widgets it will leave empty or wrong selections in the add widget menu.

back up apps???????

ok, so i searched and i searched... forums, googling, and video sites (for tutorials and not just one search each, several times each one.) and i haven't been able to find out how to back up apps... i have root access and i'm running a jacheroski rom. i think i can back up free apps only. is it possible to back up my paid apps that i've bought off the market through the phone?? can i do it through a computer??? any insight will help. thank you ahead of time.
thanx to the site for all the roms and tutorials and all the people who contributed to them. ^_^

You can try My Backup for Root users
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.bg.smsbk
Or My Backup
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.rerware.android.MyBackup
or apps manager
http://www.cyrket.com/package/de.android_telefonie.appmanager
EDIT:
As long as you use the same google account signin, no matter what phone you use, you will always have access to your paid apps again without having to pay for them again, so there is really no need to backup paid apps. If you switch phone (as I have done because I have two) just go to my downloads and all the paid apps (as well as unpaid apps) will be there ready to download again. Or you can use the programs suggested above.

well, when i rooted my phone, i went to "my downloads" in the market and the apps were there, but i needed to redownload but the thing was that if i didn't DL all at once, when i go back to "my downloads" it just shows the recent ones i downloaded and the ones already installed.
but thanx, i'm gonna try those apps right now.
You can also type in the terminal:
$su
#mkdir /sdcard/AppBackup/
#cp -r /system/sd/* /sdcard/AppBackup/
this will put all of your apps, including paid apps, in the directory you created.

The one downside to backing up and reinstalling paid apps from SD is the maret no longer checks for updates on those apps...you have to update manually from the market (But once you do it once through the market then it will keep checking until you wipe again of delete the app)
#cp -r /system/sd/* /sdcard/AppBackup/
is the "*" where i add my folder name or is it after "/appbackup"??? capitalization necessary for the A and B in "appbackup"??
it said optional or options but didn't store anything in my new folder labeled "yoe" in the SD's root...

Code:
# mkdir /sdcard/test
mkdir /sdcard/test
# cp -r /system/sd/* /sdcard/test
cp -r /system/sd/* /sdcard/test
# ls /sdcard/test/
ls /sdcard/test/
app
app-private
app_s
This is what should happen when you type in the commands (This is the output when I actually do it)
The mkdir is creating a folder on your SD so when you 'cp' or copy all of the files in /system/sd/ the '*' is a shell wildcard for all files you need to reference the exact folder you created in sdcard.
so if you did:
$su
#mkdir /sdcard/yoe
you should do:
#cp -r /system/sd/* /sdcard/yoe
Then if there are no errors check your sdcard to make sure they got copied
Edit: The 'ls' command is like a 'dir' command in the windows shell
uh.. tried exactly what you wrote down with "test" instead of "yoe", didn't work. and no, i'm not using the app2sd, i don't believe. i'm running the "slow" rom due to me not having a memory card that can be partitioned. (sorry, forgot to mention it.)
i made the yoe folder with astro.
there's just one file under the "test" folder and it's labeled "placeholder"...???

I should have asked, did you try to set up apps 2 sd? If so it may have been configured wrong.
WHat exactly are you running:
Partitions: order & size
ROM version:
SD Class:
Also could you go to Settings->SDCard and let me know how much Internal storage space you have left.
Thanks!

Well, i tried, but it didn't let me. so continued to flash the JACHero roms as the came out and didn't worry bout the apps2sd because i'm happy with just aim and a browser. it has terminal and tether and a twitter client so the only app i really need/want that i have to install from market is the hello aim, i had a few other apps i just wanted to try out but i uninstalled them already.

how to remove specific apps?

im kinda trying to learn a little but im running gumbo 1.5c and wanting to remove certain apps built in.
such as footprints, sprint tv, nascar etc..
download flips kitchen and you can remove the apps you want.
Be rooted and mount in cmd
adb shell
cd /system/app/
ls
Find apk name
rm appname.apk (CASE SENSITIVE)
reboot (After removing all desired apps)

yeah but if he's a noob to this flips kitchen way would be easier.
If he's noob he should take a few mins to learn. But yes kitchen=easy. Search "adb For dummies. Actual name of thread. No insult intended.
Thread should close and let it be buried only to be LOOKED AT after a search. Ill be amazed if anything more is said. 5 bucks on questions about rooting and getting to shell are asked.

does the kitchen work for gumbo 1.5? i'm pretty sure its designed to work with fresh, as i know it wouldn't work on modaco's rom.
the cmd prompt commands go
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
then you end up with the # prompt. from there follow the
Code:
cd /system/app/
ls
Find apk name
rm appname.apk (CASE SENSITIVE)
reboot (After removing all desired apps)
and make sure to reboot afterwards

[HowTo] Remove System Apps + Description

Hi, i just went through the online ROM cooking app from Modaco for the desire ROM...after 10 Minutes i got to the bottom where i read "only for paid users". Well it's their right, but i find it lame nevertheless.
Right. to the Howto. You need:
1. Rooted Nexus. You can follow this thread if you haven't done it:
2. You need Explorer or any Explorer like app (the first one is FREE in the Store)
3. Navigate to /system/app/ - Here are all the installed apps, you will want to swipe through and remember the EXACT name you want to remove (Case sensitive!)
Ex.: com.htc.FriendStreamWidget.apk
4. On the Phone navigate to SETTINGS -> PROGRAMS -> DEVELOPMENT -> activate USB Debugging
5. On the PC Open a CMD and navigate to the Android SDK
a. Test if the connection is working:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT9CVP815983 device
b. adb shell
#
c. #su -ENTER
su
d. #cd /system/app
cd /system/app
e. mount -o rw,remount /system
f. Now here you start to uninstall. To uninstall an app you will need to use the following command together with the exact name you remembered at point 3. The names ARE Case Sensitive!
rm -r teeter.apk (for the Teeter game app for ex.)
That's IT!
Other apps i removed:
rm -r Browser.apk - Default Internet Browser
rm -r com.amazon.mp3.apk - Amazon bloatware
rm -r com.htc.FriendStreamWidget.apk - Integrates Flickr and Facebook Widget
rm -r com.htc.StockWidget.apk - If you use STOCKs you might want this
rm -r DCSStock.apk - Stock App
rm -r FriendStream.apk - Integrates Flickr and Facebook
rm -r HtcTwitter.apk - HTC Twitter App
rm -r com.htc.TwitterWidget.apk - Twitter Widget
rm -r NewsReader.apk - RSS News Reader
rm -r com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.apk - RSS News Reader
rm -r RSS.apk - Another RSS app
rm -r com.htc.MusicWidget.apk - Default Music Widget (i use the icon)
rm -r HtcFootprints.apk - Footprints
rm -r HtcFootprintsWidget.apk - Widget
rm -r /system/app/com.htc.MusicWidget.apk - Music Widget
rm -r /system/app/com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.apk - RSS News Reader Widget
rm -r /system/app/Gmail.apk - Gmail app (i use the normal MAIL app for syncing my gmail account)
rm -r /system/app/GmailProvider.apk (the Gmail provider)
rm -r /system/app/HtcTwitter.apk (i`m sure you use a different app for twitter)
rm -r /system/app/HTCSetupWizard.apk (the initial setup app that i went through one time)
P.s: if you want to add something back just look into the ZIPPED ROM image and take the apk from /system/app
Other apps and what they do (this are reflected by my own research). Please feel free to add applications and a description as there are still a few that i have no idea what they do (and i haven't found a complete list):
HTC_IME.apk - The android keyboard
Clicker.apk - if you want to improve typing experience through calibration
Rosie.apk - Main interface app of SenseUI (same as Launcher.apk)
Launcher.apk - Main interface app of Stock Cupcake1.5 UI - it hosts all application, manage widgets and more...
PCSCII.apk - client for syncronization via HTC Sync
HtcStreamPlayer.apk - Player for streamed audio
iWnnIME.apk - Japanese keyboard
CNSoftKeyboard.apk - Chinese soft Keyboard
Feel free to add to the guide. If it is useful i`ll edit it!
Cheers
teeter.apk is the HTC game called Teeter. The one with the silver ball you roll around into the appropriate hole.

HTC_IME is the HTC keyboard called Touch Input, and it used Clicker.apk to calibrate it.
Felt this should be addressed since non Desire ROM's don't have this by default. Unless you add it in of course.
I was actually thinking of how to do this prom the PC...just now. Thanks for the guide. But what's the command to list files in current directory...ls?
Unfortunately i cant uninstall the Amazon App.
Where is the mistake?
C:\android-sdk\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached

C:\android-sdk\tools>adb shell
# su -ENTER
su -ENTER
# cd /system/app
cd /system/app

Type
Code:
adb remount
before you do the commands.
what is the difference between rm -r xxxxx.apk to adb uninstall xxxx.apk? They both uninstall them right? Or am I missing something...
You can always boot into recovery and:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/app/xxxx.pk
To look what is there:
adb shell ls /system/app
Okay...I've removed all ringtones from the phone. Now I want to put in my own ringtones from the computer. How do I copy all the ringtones I have all at once to the phone instead of one by one?
Damn i deleted the CalendarProvider which i`m guessing handles the sync with google.
Can someone with a Desire Alpha 14 upload the CalendarProvider.apk somewhere?
Thanks!
EDIT: Nevermind i just unzipped the contents of the ROM and pulled it out from there... working again

Just put em on your sdcard, the phone will find them automatically. For mp3's you may have to install ring droid or rings extended.
Why not just use Root Explorer (or equiv), navigate to system/app, mount as r/w, find the file you want and rename it to file.apk.bak, revert back to r/o there you go?
You don't need and PC and you can get it back any time this way.

Previously, I was using:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
adb rm -r xxxxx.apk
I tried using:
Code:
adb remount
adb uninstall xxxx.apk
It keeps saying
Code:
Failure
Does adb uninstall work? If so what am I doing wrong?

+1 for this. Very helpfull
updated the app list with some more that were present on the latest A19 Desire ROM
I don't understand the insistence on using adb; all of this can be done from within the terminal emulator just fine.
I just removed Music.apk via this method, via the phone, no connection to a PC needed. Also backed it up first via the terminal.

some prefer to type on a full-sized keyboard when available?
Sure, I guess I can understand that.
I guess from my end, it's more spite, defiance, etc - one of the things I detested about the iphone was the requirement of attaching it to a PC (and of having to keep a windows install running, no itunes on linux). Being able to do damned close to everything directly on the phone, is one of the things I love about this phone.
Any Way I can remove Read only Files Like The Amazon mp3 Store without Rooting my Phone ? ?

Replacing Samsungs Contacts and Dialer app with default one

Hi
I've managed to get rid of the crappy Samsung TouchWiz calendar app, and replace it by the vanilla android Calendar.apk (pulled from CyanogenMOD 5.0.8).
To do this I did the following:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm /system/app/Calendar.*
rm /system/app/CalendarProvider.*
chmod 666 /data/system/packages.xml
exit
exit
adb pull /data/system/packages.xml c:\packages.xml
[removed the Calendar and CalendarProvider entries with notepad++]
adb push c:\packages.xml /data/system/packages.xml
adb install c:\CyanogenMOD5.0.8\CalendarProvider.apk
adb install c:\CyanogenMOD5.0.8\Calendar.apk
Worked like a charm!
Now i'm trying the same with Contacts
however this time around it's not working so easily.
Each time I'm trying to install the new ContactsProvider and Contacts apk's, I'm given the following error:
Code:
adb install ContactsProvider.apk
42 KB/s (146217 bytes in 3.344s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/ContactsProvider.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]
Any ideas??
I'd love to get a few minutes alone with however at Samsung decided to take this wonderful piece of hardware and cram it full with cheap, buggy iPhone-ripoff software
well to start off, it clearly said it was "Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE]"
find a compatible APK then try again
I know this is and old thread but did you finally getit working?

uninstall system application

I used this:
su
mount -o rw, remount/system ENTER
rm -r/system/app/maps.apk ENTER
but then it writes that -r failed, no such application found. Can anybody help me
what is it S-OFF and how to do it? I want remove factory aplication out of my HTC Click and terminal.apk writes me read-only system or something like this. Any help? Somebody adviced me that I must change S-ON to S-OFF
I think the -r should take a space before writing the directory location, that's why the directory does not exist. Type rm -r /system/app/maps.apk or just navigate into the directory like cd /system/app/ and then rm -r maps.apk.
Answering your S-OFF question, if you are rooted, and already have a custom rom I can't see the need to do that. Stay away from SPL and Radios updates if you don't know what you are doing. You can brick your phone.
Post your results.
if I do HBoot holding END+VOLUME DOWN button, there is on the top of the creen written S-on
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
rm -f /system/app/<apk name>.apk
pm uninstall <package name>
where is written package name? Thanks
in data/data have the package. You have to look which corresponds to the application you want to uninstall.Be careful what you uninstall, make a backup before.
Type cd /system/app/ and then l or ls to list the content. Select the apk name and paste on the remove command
Just install RootExplorer on your phone... Go to System/app/ and find Maps.apk that u wanna delete. Make sure it is in "Mount R/W" mode(The white button on top). Then press and hold the Maps.apk and click delete. You don't even need adb...
RootExplorer is for kids, not geeks!

With these explanations you have given only get you delete the application, and leave the data of the application and consumes space, you could also delete with rootexplorer searching for the package in data/data.Uninstall applications from system in the phone is best titanium backup.and here we were not talking about adb ...talk phone terminal.
Titanium backup can uninstall system app
Thank you for ur post, it helped me o lot.
