I know there's more threads around, but just wanted to share what worked for ME.
I've been experimenting with many of the settings - specifically, turning off 'enable always-on mobile data', and playing with the location settings, etc. No matter what I tried before, I was getting around a 10% drain/hour.
Last night I removed the contacts (htc people) widget. It's 5pm now, and my Evo has been off the charger since 7:30am. Down to 78% battery. That's with light/moderate usage. (before, I was seeing the 10% drain even when my phone was completely idle..)
Thought that might save someone else.. BIG difference for me was that single item - removing the htc people widget.
EDIT 06/27/10
Couple of comments about this - my Facebook account has 800 contacts. Your millage will vary if you have a small number of friends. Also, might want to disable the widgets for friendstream as well. This makes a *huge* difference if you're using facebook.. also, the update that's rumored to be coming tomorrow is rumored to have a battery saving patch in relation to facebook, so it may fix this battery hog.. For now, disabling it is the best bit (by simply removing the widget..) We'll see if HTC actually manages to tame this widget.. Personally, I don't miss it at all.. fast enough to pull people up via the search or the phone app..

are you referring to "friend stream"? or the "people" contact icon on the main screen?

I can confirm this. I removed the HTC people widget yesterday and my battery life today is improved AND it seems to have helped if not fixed my restarting issue

Can you confirm if it's the "people" in main menu, or the favorites widget?
The HTC People widget shows up as the people Favorites. This is what is being referred to here.
I'm referring to the HTC people widget. (but - I removed friendstream / Facebook / Twitter / etc quite a while back to combat battery loss. Nothing helped until removing this widget)
Ps - its 10pm now and I've had moderate use in this phone since this morning - down to 40% left.. I would have had to recharge by mid afternoon before)

ah ok, I assumed so but no reason not to check. I removed that right off the bat since I don't see a point to it.

hmm..
I dont use the widget at all
i need to kill the "people" service very often... i have close to 300 of my phonebook contacts linked to facebook.. and for some reason this can suck up to 800mb of data in one day..
i want the facebook integration, but i dont know what to do.

Try having 800 facebook friends ;/
You can set the sync times for friendsfinder /facebook - it may help as well. For me at least the people widget was the missing link..

The people favorites one that comes default one screen to the left or the people icon that comes on the main screen??
Ok. I have a update regarding the friend widget. This is my first day back to work sense removing it and normally by the end of my shift with regular use i leave the office with 20 or so %. Today i am leaving work with 67%!! And zero system restarts. I think this widget has some serious memory holes and its removal has seriously improved my Evo
I will also confirm this works on the Hero FYI. Unplugged this morning at 7:30 with a full charge and it is now 4:37 PM I still have 84% battery. Carazy!
i just removed mine as well, i wasn't using it anyway, we'll see how it goes
The whole service is buggy. My gf's phone took off the other day, constant data and only 3 hours of battery on standby. Nothing helped, reboot, nothing, removing the facebook account and re-adding it fixed it completely, been weeks with no problems now. You might try this rather than killing the service, it's like the account sync goes bad it gets stuck in a loop, constantly running, and once it's bad nothing fixes it other than removing the account and re-adding it.
My GF and I bought at the same time, same revisions, same apps, worked fine for weeks, then hers went crazy for days. Did everything short of a factory default, decided to remove the account and re-add as suggested on android forums, it worked, no problems since. Seems silly, but I saw it definitively work with my own eyes. Battery utilization had the android.process.acore at 2% (but it was the only diff between my phone and hers), once I removed and re-added the account this disappeared. No need to change the widgets, she uses friend stream and contacts widget, all of them, before 3 hours standby, now two days.
Seems stupid but I think sense has some bug problems now that HTC should REALLY address.
Few questions,
Anyone know of a "HTC People" like widget out there?
Has this only been tested with the big 9 person widget and not the 3 scrolling?
Anyone know just how much better of battery life you can get by not running Sense? Aka, Android default, Launcher Pro, OpenHome, aLauncher etc? (Because you'll still have to install a bunch of other add ons to make up for the hole between stock 2.1 and Sense 2.1)
Should I really stop using FriendStream as well and revert to the default Twitter and Facebook widgets?
I've been using my EVO for awhile now and I must say I really do enjoy the HTC Sense feel over the basic Android desktop.
Am I really that "stupid" for using Sense or is it just a giant negative placebo effect that Sense really does ruin the battery life.
I've read a lot about all of this, but this is the first mention of the "People" widget. I've known about Friend feed for awhile but I've kept it anyways.
End game? My EVO has yet to run out of battery life once. I even carry around a second battery just in case, but so far I haven't had to use it. I will honestly say that I haven't quite used it too intensively and I'm always closing my processes, but it's about the same as my Touch Pro 2.
I do a lot of internet browsing, but on 3G in Opera Mini on Google Reader. Some apps, emailing and SMS here and there.
OK, I am really slow about this. I have a stock, off-the-shelf EVO. Can someone just post the steps needed to "remove" the people widget? Does this mean just remove it from the home screen? Is this the large widget or just the shortcut? I have "force close"d the service through Settings--Applications, but is this sufficient?
Thanks!
Is Anyone having a problem with the news and weather widget where the weather graph forecast is not showing the forecast, it only shows upto the time I update to.
Yes, mine's been like it for a while.
Same here. Where are you guys from? It might indicate some failure to communicate between a local data provider and Google. I live in France.
EDIT: Nevermind, just noticed your locations were indicated. Might be that whoever carried the data for Europe stopped...
same here, although i think the graph is correct (next 24 hours), but the scrollable bar shows wrong time and doesn't update the numbers for each hour.
i think it's like this since DST ended last week.
I can confirm it as well.
I can confirm the same behaviour on my carrier.

Lots of complaints. It has to do with daylight savings. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=14ddf4a0daf367f4&hl=en
EDIT: Oh, and if you change location to Singapore (either irl or in settings [+1 for irl]) it works. So it's on googles end.
I've got a problem that's not related to GPS but locations. When I'm at home, the weather widget says my location is Sweden, however, Google Maps finds almost my exact location (two streets away or so). If I take a one km walk it finds the location and says Stockholm. I tried re-installing the locations software with no luck. Maybe my phone doesn't like my flat? :S

If you read what I actually said I clearly state that it's a problem with the weather widget (which naturally does display weather)
I have a different, but frustrating issue:
On the clock widget where you also can see your location and the weather:
I live in a town called Geldrop in the Netherlands, which always showed on the clock widget, including the weather corresponding to this town.
Now since a couple of days (do not know when exactly)...it just says: 'current location'...when I select the widget, bring it to the left bottom on the homescreen to edit it, I cannot select Geldrop anymore, it says it does not exist.....
My girlfriend has a DHD as well, and hers still says Geldrop.
Now, I do have flashed Leedroid, kernels etc, etc, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it...but is anyone able to point me in the direction of the solution?

The problem I'm experiencing only seems to appear when I'm in Stockholm, nowhere else.
I had the same problem with it saying "Current Location" before too, both on the DHD and my old WM. It solved itself eventually. However, the reason Geldrop doesn't "exist" is because it's not added in the built in database that comes from HTC. Because of this, you'll only see Geldrop when it's your current location since it gets the name of the location via AGPS and then looks it up on Acuweather.com. There's a program to edit the database for WM which I used to add Opitter in Belgium with, but I don't know if there's one for Android.

Yes, but the fact that your girlfriends phone finds the location while yours doesn't is very strange since it's the same device. I will report this tomorrow.
Another thing that's strange is the weather animation for fog. On the weather tab it says FOG with black letters all over the animation while this text is not visible on the clock widget. I asked HTC about this and they said it's all as it should be. Seems strange to me though.

Okey, so I mailed HTC today and they told me to remove the ip for the Proxy and port from the API, which seemed a bit strange to me, and to my disappointment it only made it worse by saying "Connection failed". Yey!
I am having the exact same problem, my original htc weather widget shows only "Sweden". This happened since the upgrade to 2.2.
I'm pretty sure the weather information is correct though. Since I've compared it to other weather apps and widgets. I've switched to beautiful widgets temporarily (well for a couple of months now), and there it shows even the parts of stockholm if I move around. Right now it's showing Fruängen which is correct.
I remember reading about some problem with the htc weather widget long ago on the modaco forums when 2.2 came. I don't think it's fixed yet (at least from HTCs side).

Yeah. That was my argument too when I spoke to HTC, but they said it's Googles fault even though Google maps finds my location correctly. They didn't accept it as their fault and therefore they didn't even file a report about it to the developers.

Hello,
I've got a similar problem with weather widget and location too...
I went to a small village for Christmas and since this time, my location in the widget is locked at this village.
When I open the weather app, I can see my good location very quickly, but after the refresh the location returns to the bad village.
And my location in google maps or in google’s website is good...
I have the same problem I have to delete all data for weather and clock and update it again. anyone have any idea why this happen?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
The stock Android Facebook widget doesn't seem to be syncing correctly on the widget face. I can got into the app and get all the recent status updates but on the widget it self "up to date" status is like 3 days old.
Any one know of a fix or is it the facebook app its self.
I am running cm7 nightly 14 with newest gapps 307.
Thanks for any answers and wondering how many of you this is effecting as well.
Same here! I'm running a Sense ROM. Sometimes it works right then all of the sudden I'm looking at dude's ugly mug from last Wednesday. I was beginning to think maybe it didn't compile correctly after i modded. Glad to see I'm not alone!
Yea same here... caused me to stop using the widget. I don't have a fix for it myself... but I think it will be taken care of eventually.
I did more research outside of XDA and it look like its a problem within facebook and not Android or Roms.
Any idea what would cause ALL of my homescreen widgets to stop updating i.e. freeze for no obvious reason? I'm completely stock & un-rooted, and when this issue first came up I did a factory reset but the problem still comes up out of nowhere. Everything will be working fine and then out of nowhere they all stop updating. Here are the widgets I use:
Fancy Widget
Switch Pro
Android Pro Widgets
BattStatt Pro
I've been using these same widgets for at least three years, and over three different devices, and this has never been a problem, which makes me think it's something weird with KitKat. At this point I'm removing widgets one by one to see if I can narrow it down, but it is so f-ing frustrating because everything will be fine for a day or two and then WHAM all of my homescreen widgets just lock up and the only way to get them to update again is to reboot the device which is a pain in my ass. It's worth mentioning that even after all the widgets freeze the stock 'Weather' widget still works fine...

Thanks, I'll give it a try to see if I still have the issue. I used to run LauncherPro back in the day - even paid for the plus version - but then the dev promptly stopped releasing updates, and I felt somewhat ripped off. . . From then on I've stayed with whatever launcher came stock on the device.
How did you manage to put widgets on lock screen?
I had it on my S4 but I couldn't find that settings in the S5.

I posted about the same issue in the Verizon GS5 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738912. Hopefully one of us will get an answer. My weather widgets were stopping the refresh (BeWeather and Beautiful Widgets), and I use Go Launcher and Apex. And my interval between requiring a launcher restart drops - initially its a couple days, but as time progresses, I need to reset more and more frequently.
Not sure its a KitKat specific issue - my Nexus 7 (2012) running KitKat runs all widgets fine.

So, I'm NOT the only one after all. And you have this issue even on Apex? Not good - I was hoping that would be a solution for me.
In searching around online I found the following info on another forum:
"this issue occurs because kitkat has changed the way it manages background alarms. most widgets that update frequently use "alarmmanager" to trigger each update. but in kitkat, the trigger event is intentionally delayed so that android can group processes together, saving battery life and data use. so, for all those clock and weather widgets, the developers have to write a bunch of new code for kitkat devices, so that their widgets update at the intended time."
After reading this I tested a theory and set my alarm to go off in 2 minutes. The alarm went off, and sure enough all widgets were frozen . . . I figured it must be the 'Timely Alarm Clock' app causing the issue, so I uninstalled and went back to stock alarm. This didn't work however, because two days later everything froze up again . . . I'm wondering now if it might be one of the other apps I'm using in the background, but there are so many possibilities and the issue is so intermittent. I never use 'task killers' or battery monitoring apps, so that isn't it. I could spend weeks trying to narrow it down, and it's always possible that more than one app could be causing the problem.

I can't speak for the author, but I believe he was referring to "alarms" from a programming sense. I.e. the alarm is what "wakes up" the phone to tell it to go on the internet, fine the latest weather info, and update the widget.
Widgets are working fine on my Nexus 7 (2012) that runs KitKat. I think I had a similar issue on my SGS3 when I first got it, and I posted to those forums a couple years ago, but now for the life of me I cannot remember what the solution was...it may have been to move to Apex!
Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. There were updates to Apex in the meantime, perhaps its that.
My friend with Go Launcher is also seeing the same impact - the issue is gone.

I hesitate to respond for fear of tempting fate . . . But since installing Nova launcher two weeks ago I haven't had a single issue with home screen widgets freezing. I am also experiencing truly great battery life now, but I'm not sure if Nova had anything to do with that since I made a number of other tweaks I'd done trying to fix the widget issue. In any case, I finally feel like my S5 is glitch free and functioning as a next-gen device should.
