returning 002 novatech @ radioshack - EVO 4G General

I'm going to go back to place of purchase RadioShack very soon to return my 002 for a 003 or at least be put on waiting list if they have none in stock.
Screen Separation
Light Leakage
Warped Battery Cover
Only issue I see is that my evo is a bit scuffed up, a small scratch on the mid right of the screen you can't really see unless you stare at it and a scuff on the bottom left corner, do you think they will give me hell for that?
What was your experience with RS when you returned your evo?
Any tips you could share?
I'm going to be straight up with them, regardless of the normal wear n tear it is a Manufacturing defect the reason for exchange, I would keep the phone if the screen and battery cover didn't pinch my skin all the dam time. Screen separation, Light Leakage, warped battery cover, under warranty, not my fault, not your fault, not sprint's fault, only htc's fault,I love the phone, I like sprint, I like you, you should not try to resell this phone because its a 002 and defective, send it back to htc, you shouldn't lose any money.. please can I haz a shiny new 003 evo? /beg
Should I even mention the versions of phones? They might try to pull a "its not guaranteed that you will get a 003 so you shouldn't try exchanging it"
Should I stick with just screen separation/light leakage/flimsy battery cover?
Will they try to force me to goto the sprint repair shop where they will charge me up the ass to tell me theres nothing wrong with my phone?

I don't know... RS employees are notorious for douchebaggotry.

Doubt it if you're past the 30-day window.

He wants to swap it out for the newer evo not return it for a refund.
Anyways I think you should be fine. Your phone is defective, screen separation/light leakage is a known issue and the flimsy battery cover is quite annoying. I'd be surprise if they give you any lip..

Ya I called them.. the only RS with an evo in-stock is 35miles away lol,.. they said they get shipments every Wednesday but its not guaranteed to have evos in the shipment.. wtf?

If you were a new contract they would have a phone in stock right now.

the hero is defective, i have proof!

i know how the dust in getting in our phones, there is a defective seal between the body & the lcd. how do i have proof? i went to install a screen protector today and the solution leaked underneath the lcd and leaves staining and a fog. i had to put my hero in a bag of dry rice to preserve & dry it. no other phone i have had, had this issue when installing a screen protector, im only using a small amount of water spray too, not a ton.

come on man, im serious here, this is an issue that htc should of fixed. they wouldn't sell those screen protectors to damage your phone. i only used a very small amount of the spray they provide, you have to use the credit card to squeeze the bubbles out.

I actually agree, for some reason I am just unable to pass up an opportunity to give you $h1t
Fortunately I have been one of the lucky few who have no dust under my screen and my call/end button paint shows no wear at all. My hero looks as new today as it did on 3/12/2009 when I got it.
I was serious though about getting photographic documentation, not sure what you would do with it but if you ad an opportunity to tell someone who could do something about it you would be glad you took the pics (ie, emailing someone at htc or sprint, or even proving the defect to customer service in order to get a replacement)
*edit- You bought the screen protector from HTC? I put a full zagg shield on mine a couple months ago and was very paranoid about the solution getting down in the crack between the bottom of the screen and the button plate but I was lucky, no problems.

dude, I think you need some perspective. You have insurance, right? Forget the deductible, if you go in and use the correct words in the correct order you can easily walk out with a brand new phone... just saying.

probably, yes.... i just checked the phone and the fog is gone but there is a highly noticeable water stain under the lcd at the top left corner of the phone. im trying to dry it out as we speak. too late to go to sprint today but i may call them and htc to see what they are willing to do. i assume the invisible shields do not void your warranty at all since some sprint stores & best buy carry them?

Eh...good luck. You've got water underneath your screen via a third party screen protective solution.
The liquid wouldnt have entered your screen had you not administered it. Water can creep through even the smallest of openings.
I highly doubt things are going to work in your favor if you enter a Sprint store. I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint location that advocates a screen solution that requires even the smallest amount of liquid since liquid damage is something that must be handled by the insurance company, Asurion, that many wireless providers work through.
Its worth a shot. Just dont be completely disappointed if the Sprint store doesnt respond in your favor.

Sprint stores as well as Best Buy both install screen protectors, so I doubt that would be an issue.
Umm...not to be rude here, but that's been a known issue for a while. It's not new. Anyone who's had the dust issue (myself included) has known about the seal under the screen leaking.
Yes it's defective. If you put up enough of a fuss they'll replace it with a refurb which will likely have the same problem.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I bought mine at best buy, got it replaced, and haven't had the problem since. It appears HTC had a bad batch (well a lot of them, really) for about 6-8 months. They fixed the problem after that, but the good ones are mixed in with the old ones. It's a crapshoot as to whether you'll get one without a dust problem.
I always get screen protectors that have built in sticky solution. never had the dust problem either.

I'll just put it like this, its not that I don't believe people are having these issues its just that they are exaggerating it completely out of proportion.
I have a Htc Hero(With Google) made in 2009, came with the 1.56 RUU Installed. I have 1 (READ 1) dead pixel on my entire screen, the case has no paint chips, no dust under the screen, buttons show no wear(its not paint...), my speakers work and sound great, I get a full signal in 90% of places, Calls never drop, hardware is fast if you know what your doing and tweak it, you can run 2.1 perfectly if you know what your doing, no battery issues whatsoever.
So yeah... a dead pixel... I'm completely returning my hero to Sprint for that. (not)

I also have a dead pixel. And I'm not returning it for that reason, either.
But I feel I need to set you straight on a few issues.
#1. The dust issue is real. While I personally didn't wait until I had half my screen covered with it to replace it, I've seen pics (here I believe) where the phone is virtually unusable due to the dust. I had a small amount of dust. But why shouldn't I return it? Why should I spend a bunch of money on a defective piece of hardware? If it's not properly functioning when brand new I'm returning it. Which is what I did, and lucked out.
#2. Button wear. I've never had this problem (only had the phone a couple of months) but my wife has. Whether it's paint, or dye, or what have you, those things can and do flake. There are also images of it on these forums if you search for them.
#3. Never had a speaker problem.
#4. You seem to be extremely fortunate about where you live/drive/work then. Because signal issues happen if you do any travelling.
#5. I don't get people with battery problems either. I have the stock battery and can go all day (12-14 hours) and use 50% or less of the battery.
Anyhow, I doubt the people that are having the issues you mention are exaggerating, and at least in the case of the flaking buttons and dust I know from experience they're as bad as people make it out to be.

exactly, plus they sell them as well. it wouldn't void my warranty under water damage because the water indicator sticker is intact and there are no signs of water damage. i doubt a small amount of solution would seep under the screen unless it was defective. im about to call sprint and demand a brand new hero or a samsung moment as im on my 3rd phone now. besides the fact the 3rd phone they sent me was suppose to be new and it's a refurb with over 700 calls made from it. im really about to not buy htc or sprint anymore and maybe move to another carrier.

I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint Store that would install a screen protector that uses any form of a liquid. The screen protectors that Sprint stores sell are a stick film. Nothing that requires liquid to apply.
Best Buy stores do sell and install these...but you're not going to Best Buy for a replacement unit generally. I'm sure they'll turn you away.
well forget sprint, they said the most that will happen is to give me another refurbish, they need to all be on the same page. some say you get new phones and some say they give you used ones. after 3 phones im entitled to a new one or another comparable model. so i guess my last hope is to call htc on monday, after that im dropping my contract and going to t-mobile or verizon. maybe the issue is they give people used phones and not new ones, they need to start backing up their warranties because it seems to me they are just cheap as hell.

all replacements were done through sprint and my 2nd one was a brand new phone. the tech told me last week that if my 3rd one acts up im entitled to a another compatible phone model such as the moment. now they are telling me something different. to me the $7 insurance i pay for every month is apparently worthless.

Why do we even bother with the $7?

HTC charging me $75 for the hairline power button crack

Sent to the article author here at XDA this morning along with a few other key addresses.
**********************************
Just wanted to follow up with you. HTC has quoted me $75 to repair a missing camera lens cover due to my phone also having the hairline crack you discuss here. Even though they acknowledge the fact that the hairline crack doesn't affect the camera lens in any way shape or form and also acknowledging that the missing lens (it fell out) is also an obvious warranty issue they are demanding I pay their fee. Also conveniently right after they quote you expedited shipping prices (in my case 15 for overnight since I've been fighting them for 2 weeks on this already) and charge your credit card they decide to finally inform you that it'll take about two weeks to do actually do the 10 minute repair for you.
I've attached a picture the RMA folks at HTC sent me of my "negligent damage." Somehow phones with screens that fall off and USB power ports that fall out of the phone are obvious manufacturers defects but actually pushing the power button (OMG HOW DARE I DO THIS) is abuse and will not be tolerated by the nice folks at HTC.

Wow, that is ****.
Mine is cracked in precisely the same place.
It is B.S. but for some reason both Sprint and HTC refuse to acknowledge the crack as a defect. I think it is ridiculous and deserves a recall. But I don't understand the problem completely. Are they forcing you to pay $90 in order to get your phone back? Or are they just saying that it would cost $90 if you asked them to repair the hairline crack?
I never read the other thread. Does it crack in the middle? Looking at how it is attached (two tiny, flimsy tabs) when I had mine apart...I would expect the tabs to break. It's a crap piece all things considered.
Sent the phone in for a completely unrelated issue. They are saying the crack is evidence that I've abused my phone. I can either pay 75 for them to fix it or 40 for them just to send it back. The additional is shipping.
This company literally has by far the most useless and brain dead phone reps I've ever encountered.
Should have just exchanged it with Sprint.
That is absolutely awful. The cracked power button is a well-known defect of this phone. And the fact that they are nitpicking you is almost a deal-breaker. I'm mad for you.
Twice when I owned a Blackberry I sent my phone in for minor issues. The way it worked is that Sprint overnighted a new phone to me before they looked at mine. I activated the new one so that I wouldn't have to be without phone. Then I sent in the old one. RIM charges something like $75 if they find that the problem doesn't exist and you were just trying to get a shiny new phone. I was never charged the $75. And I was really pushing the policy because there was some tiny flaw in the phone which was why I was returning it.
You shouldn't have to wait this long for a replacement. And you shouldn't have to bicker with them like it's a flea market. We only have these phones for like a year before we move on, and they are wasting your time.

Sprint had no phones and it was a wait for a refurb. Figured this would be a simple in and out repair. My bad thinking HTC has any idea what customer service is.

She must have been trying to get you out of the store as quickly as possible. Not a bad strategy.
get your phone back tell them to F themselves at go ***** at sprint, and wait, I'm pretty sure its not going to kill anyones phone to have a crack in it while you wait for a refurb to come in, HTC is going to send you a refurb anyway most likely.
either way with a refurb your stuck without root, the Evo's roll in for Service and repair replacements every few days.
the longer the better, more time to hope froyo gets rooted lol
Wait, is the button itself cracked, or the trim right around it (on the screen side of the top)?
Its just the trim around it. I really don't see it as anything but a cosmetic issue. There is no "flex" to the plastic and feels as solid as a friends that doesn't have the crack.
I can only feel it with my fingernail.
File a case with the BBB.

I have that too. Mine has been apart a few times, so I can't really *****. I only noticed it because I was scrutinizing the button.
Still my favorite phone ever, and will probably be for the next six months.
Yet when there is a thread about another manufacturer everyone is ready to beat HTC off with both hands while they piss on the other builders. They are no better and their build quality is certainly suspect at best. Don't even get me started on the programming mess.
I've filed formal complaints with the BBB (like anyone cares) and the Florida Division of Consumer Services (might care) along with posting on every forum and facebook page I can find related to HTC as well as carpet bombing their fax numbers.
HTC I know you are reading this.
I'm just getting started.
I promise you I will cost you many many times more than the 75 bucks you've gotten from me.
Making it a point to call twice a day to check on my phone.
They told me it would be 5 to 7 days before it ships.
I'll call twice a day every day and waste as much of their time as I possibly can.
Also got another "we don't care about your problems with HTC" chain letter from Sprint today. In case anyone wondered the "[email protected]" address just takes you to more customer "service" reps though you do get a dedicated employee to ignore you. I like when they say they are "calling from the office of Dan Hesse." It makes me giggle. Chances are good they wouldn't know Dan Hesse if he walked up and punched them in the face.

My EVO now has 2 hair line cracks

So my EVO now has 2 hair line cracks. One to the left of the power button and one under the volume buttons. I stopped at the Sprint store and the tech verified the cracks were not caused by abuse. He notated my account so when I call Sprint customer service they will ship me a new phone. Now I have 2 questions? Will the replacement be a refurb? And in the email they sent about my replacement it states: If im not enrolled in TEP (which im not) it will be $99-$119 depending on device model for wear and tear, physical damage and mechanical or electrical failures not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Now since the sprint tech at the store verified it was not physical damage or abuse. The device manufacturer's warranty covers mechanical and electrical failures. What are these hair line cracks considered? They are definitly a manufacturer's defect, but like the warranty stated it covers mechanical and electrical failures. I sure hope they dont try to charge me for a defect. I have the Epson rev 002 rooted and I'm loving it. I just dont feel after 2 months I should have these damn cracks.

That's what I was worried about. I hate the fact that I paid all that money and now have a defect but in return they give me a refurb. I guess in some cases a refurb that was examined by a human may be better than off the assembly line?
Refurb if you had TEP it would be new. I had a Touch Pro 2 that cracked and I felt the same way. The guy at the Sprint store told me too bad its cosmetic doesn't effect the performance of the phone.

WOW thats exactly how I felt about the TP2. Lucky for me I had TEP on the Touch Pro as well. So Sprint paid the deductible for me, in that case. I called Sprint from the parking lot of the Sprint store and told them just about everything your posting now. I was very angry but they helped me as best they could.
Really the thing to do is get TEP its worth the money. I think you can add it when you get the refurb.

You know its one of those things you just don't know. That email is probably just a cookie cutter email, copy and paste. If they do you can always call and give them hell maybe they will remove the charges problem is you wont see them until after you activate the phone. I try not to start off mad as hell I work my way too it.
Demand a new phone. I had wifi problems that were due to ****ty hardware construction and I told them I'm not taking a refurb because HTC sucks and the manager gave me a brand new Evo. Had to wait for it to arrive but was worth it. Don't take no for an answer. The Evo refurb I was supposed to get had dust and dirt and scratches on the camera lens. Sprint+HTC can suck it.
FYI on Evo refurb's, the outside case is new, only the guts have been repaired.

White EVO paint chipping

Anyone else having a problem with the white paint chipping off the white EVO?
I noticed around the edges of the rear frame the paint is starting to come off revealing the red plastic underneath. I called several Sprint stores none of them carry the actual white parts for the EVO, One tech suggested I buy the parts on ebay and install them myself, Another tech wanted to charge me $35 just to look at the phone and then decide whether or not to file a warranty claim for the EVO.
Does any of this sound right? I have only been with Sprint for a few months.

A store once told me to go buy a stylus for my Treo at Radio Shack when mine broke.
I called Executive Escalations and explained the situation, had a stylus overnight and as far as I was told the store was reprimanded.
Don't take their BS.

I'm trying to be a nice guy, I don't want to escalate anything if I don't have to, I will if it's necessary. So far it seems the Sprint at the stores are not even prepared for working on the white EVO, They don't even carry the parts....
I've had nothing but good experiences with the sprint repair centres. Took my phone in last week cause the speaker sounded bad, they replaced the whole back half of the phone, free, no questions asked in about 10 minutes, they didn't even mention the fact my phone said "freshhh" when it booted up lol.
I brought my microUSB cable in as well because the end bent and it stopped charging the phone. I figured its my fault, they'll sell me a new one but he just grabbed me a new one and off I went, great experience.
This week my GPS stopped working so back I went, they looked at it and ordered me a new phone, again no questions asked, no charge.
So I would say go to a different sprint store. Everyone complains about Sprints customer service but I've had nothing but good experience.

I don't think it so much a customer service issue, As it's just that they are not
prepared to repair the White EVO. I only have a handful of Sprint Stores in my area, So far everyone I have talked to has not been much help. The last thing I want to is drive even farther to get the same answer.
i have the white evo and the paint chips and its orange. its annoying =(
Ummmm ummmm yea.....i don't know what to tell you...I'm confused by this thread and its meaning for creation. You probably are upset but I would suggest painting it yourself maybe?

Id like to see some finished results of the battery cover and the piece underneath the front benzel painted some different colors before i go doing my own. I own a black evo so I don't even know if painting would even be an option. Still, I'd like to see.
Sprint stores don't have stock for any white parts yet, so there's nothing that can be done. Though, even if there were parts, paint is considered cosmetic damage, and not covered. You also have to remember that stores are JUST getting stock of the white EVOs, for sale in a few days. Many have never even SEEN a white one in person.
That being said, as much as I love the look of the white, I've seen the paint chipping too often to get one. Sad.
haha.. i traded out my white evo for a black one for this reason

Sprint store lulz today...

I'm having the "screen separation" issue where it starts to come up and move around at the bottom of the front of the phone, light leaking out shows up in the dark, etc.
Anyway... it's slowly getting worse so I unrooted my EVO and flashed back to stock (regretting it, a little) for giggles to take it to a Sprint corporate store near where I live to have them look at it.
The rep at the store, who wasn't even really interested in looking at my phone, told me:
1. He never heard of the problem.
2. He never saw a phone with the problem.
3. HTC never told Sprint anything official about it.
Long story short, he told me that it'd be considered a "cosmetic issue" and I'd have to file an insurance claim to get a replacement, or I could contact HTC and deal with them.
Lame! I just bought this phone a little more than 2 months ago. This is really something they should take care of at the store. They're the ones that sold me the damn thing!
</rant>
Anyone else had to deal with this problem? What did you wind up doing?
I'm sitting here rolling unrooted/stock right now, debating keeping it that way until there's a bug-free leak of the official EVO update. Ugh. I wish "ii treated ii" would tell me when the Nexus S was really going to be released so I can sell this phone and get one...

*2 anytime you have a disagreement with the store on a tep issue.
ii treated ii would likely help if you gave more "thanks"
They tried telling me the same thing months ago, then a month ago I dropped it and shattered the screen. But $100 and I have a 004 hardware brand new not refurbished. And an extra charger, 8gbcard. I am satisfied now.

I did this for the same issue. The tech on *2 agreed I should've had the phone replaced and said I should go back an talk to the manager. Well, I did that and the manager denied my replacement request as well. Eventually had to take it to [email protected] and they were able to reset my upgrade for this summer (it was suppose to be taken away). I ended up fixing the light leakage by buying a black paint marker at walmart, applied a thin strip between the glass and the casing and good as new!
No offense by why are people so anal about this? Heath there's little white lines on both sides of my screen.. doesn't bother me
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
I have a similar story, OP. I went in this weekend to show them my blown earpiece speaker and the large white spots on the screen. The spots are definitely an issue that can be looked up on the forums here. As a matter of fact, Sprint had already sent me a replacement for the white spot thing before, but my new one has the same issue now. Any way, they charged me $40 to replace the earpiece, which is clearly a manufacturing defect. When I asked why it wasn't covered under warranty, I was told that I could choose to ship it to HTC and be without a phone for weeks. Then I was told that even if I had insurance on the phone, I still would have to pay for the ear piece replacement. About the white spots, I got the "it's cosmetic" reply. This is some BS.
After I left the Sprint Store, I went to T-Mobile and At&t to ask about how they deal with warranty issues. Both stores told me that if there's a problem that's clearly a manufacturing defect, they replace it for free if it's under warranty.
I've been happy with Sprint up until this point for the most part, but I'm now considering how much I really want to keep giving them my money.

If this happened to me on a 2 month old phone, I'd be beyond pissed.
I went to the Sprint store near my office today too. While putting on a screen protector, some water got inside and caused dark spots. Most of it went away, but 2 small spots were clearly noticeable when the screen was white(otherwise, not that big of an issue).
I told the rep about the spots and he asked if I had insurance on it. I told him I did not. He was pretty cool and said he could file some repair order and I'd just have to ante up $35. I asked him if they're going to repair the screen, he told me I'd get a new phone in about 3 days. WINNING!!
BTW, I didn't even bother unrooting. He looked confused as he was trying to find the dialpad since the launcher on Myn 2.2 looks different...lol

A 2 month old phone that you're gonna be tied into a contract and likely have to use for over a year (closer to 2 with the new upgrade policy I believe).. I'd be more than anal about it.
if they choose to be an ass... then so you owe them nothing...
say you lost the phone... file for $100 deductible replacement.. and now you have a spare to fix things yourself... and use as you see it.
all the official sprint store that i went they where professional and they help me but, don't go to those private authorizes dealer for sprint they are the real asshole. i made a mistake signing up at one and maan they gave me hard time exchanging my defect Samsung epic and i already reported to sprint and they are under investigation.
Some users have this idealistic view of Sprint in-store service, but that's sadly not the case for many of us. For what it's worth, I should note that I'm a civil, friendly, slightly shy person. I don't have any attitude and I don't try to antagonize the employees or get riled up.
That said, it took me several stores and several tries to get my issues dealt with, along with about $60 total of gas. One store was outstandingly rude, arrogant and unhelpful. The other stores were like robots worked there, depending on what robot you got, you'd walk away happy, or very frustrated.
The problems I had with my old Evo were all WIDELY known defects that Sprint has even acknowledged, yet the employees played 100% dumb, insisting that "all Evo's have the bright spot, that's a flaw in all of them, and a swap won't help" and "random reboots are just a fact of life with a smartphone this sophisticated." Wtf? Anyway.
Someone needs to do a hidden camera report and send it to Dan Hesse.
most the store level reps eat paint chips lol real genius's. most of the time they give me trouble ill pull out my phone and dial *2 in front of them and that normally changes how im treated
thats bs
