Battery with 3g

Has anyone experienced the drain on the battery with 3g, as my Battery does not last a night when using 3g, but I was in the 3g free zone (gsm only) during the weekend and the battery lasted the whole weekend.

My battery will drain 50% quicker when in a 3G area, Somtimes I set the device to use standard GSM frequencies to keep the battery alive.

I'd guess it is the switching that causes the battery drain (at least this is the case with most 3G phones ) if you spend a lot of time (i.e. your workplace or home) on a "borderline" area your battery will get sapped pretty quickly
Setting the phone to use one band and stick to it (practically , this has to be GSM / 2g for a constant signal ) is the best soloution , until such time as blanket 3G coverage

same with me, i need to plug in the charger every ~40 hours. i live i 3G area, also using web'n'walk often...

I get way less than this. I have push email enabled, which keeps the internet connected constantly. However in my house I only get one-bar of 3g - often flipping to full four-bar GPRS
I only get about 24 hours between charges!

I have got serious 3G battery draining problems too.
How do I set up the TyTN to only use 2G ??

- Tap the phone icon on the top menu bar;
- Select settings;
- Select band;
- For select your network type: select GSM
- For select your GSM/UMTS band: select Auto
This setting works great for me on Cingular on an old AT&T SIM in and around Washington, DC. THe battery life is also very good. Also remember as posted on another thread in this forum that even if you do not have 3G yet in your area, if you get EDGE, you will see faster speeds on the TyTN. The TyTN has a new feature called Extended TBF Release which improves the overall throuput.

3G drops to GSM when receiving calls and during calls

I searched all the threads and found nothing on this as far as I can see. I have been having this since day one with my G1. Every time I receive a call on my G1 or during the call it drops from 3G to GSM. I had stock T-Mo roms on my G1 (Pre/Post Cupcake) then JF 1.51 and now cyanogen 4.0.2 and this problem persists. I called T-Mo a few times on this and they exchanged my G1 3 times and gave me a new battery and charger free of charge. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a work around? This happens when I am at home and work. I travel for work to different locations and it still happens. When my phone rings it automatically drops 3G and goes to GSM (no icon next to the radio icon in the status bar). While making calls it stays on 3G for about a few seconds before it craps out and drops to GSM. It totally skips EDGE and GPRS. T-Mo said they sent out radio antenna tech's to the antennas near my home and they said all is fine and dandy. I live In Queens NY and work in the Bronx. When I travel to Brooklyn its the same as well as driving though Manhattan. I hope someone can help me with this.

ive always had this as well .. just never considered it a bug lol ... but i could see why someone would wanna keep their 3g while on a call .. reminds me of how sidekicks would lose data connectivity due to a call

Could you elaborate?
If you've had 3 G1's and a tech says there's nothing wrong with the network then it's clearly an issues with cupcake, be it a feature or a bug...
I don't really see why you would want to keep data conectivity while in a call, (unless you're downloading something in the background..?) so it sounds like a way to save battery..

Here's a perfect example where 3G would rule when working properly.
I'm talking to my wife on my BT headset while driving home from work. I have my G1 on my dash with google maps running with traffic patterns showing. While talking I am able to talk clearly on 3G and still see where traffic is building so I can avoid it. Being stuck in rush hour in NYC sux homeless man [email protected] Whenever I do this and my 3G connection drops my call quality drops and we both hear it while we're talking and then it cuts in and out and the call drops then I dont get updates. It's a feature I would really like to have. Even when Im working and talking and downloading a new update of an app. This happens when I am at a static location as well. I know driving from cell tower to cell tower can have bad effects but it does the same when I'm just at home or any of my work locations. When 3G works properly which is rare its amazing. Its helped me get un lost and find my way many of times.
Point being when T-Mo released the 3G statement they said all users with 3G phones will expierence higher call quality from the extra bandwidth. Why would they cap or or disable it when they are promoting it? I see the the point of saving battery life but it still shouldnt be happening. 3G is made for that feature to work voice + data being accessed together.

It might just be there 3g network, imo tmobile reception is horrible. Like at my house it is so f'ed up, I can sit in my chair and have 3 bars then walk 2 feet and lose service. It does this all through my house and at my work. They said it must be something in the buildings I am in, bull**** I say because ATT never does that nor did vzw when I used them.

same thing happens with me and 3g and calls..also about the house thing, hows this one for u ill be sitting in the same spot and have good 3g reception and all of a sudden it drops to edge. I know a way around this is to set phone to 3G only but then in areas where theres non im screwed

I don't get it. My wife who had the original iPhone and then 3g and now 3gs never had this issue. She would stay on Edge and 3g depending if she waned to save batery life. My old BB 8700g would always stay on Edge never drop to GSM in my apartment. My 3G doesnt even fall to Edge it goes right to GSM. This is really annoying.

No one knows if this is a hardware, software, or network problem. Except maybe HTC/T-Mobile/Google.
If your phone stays connected to 3G, it's all good. If it drops down to EDGE, even if for half a second, it will NOT reconnect to 3G until you hang up.

My coworkers Samsung t819 doesn't. That's regular cell phone not a smart phone.

If any of those 3 know they should fix it or at the very least advertise that the calls you make are dropped to the lower bandwidth of the GSM network.
T-Mo finally got 3G for the last year don't dumb it down guys. Fix this.
Yes it is true once your phone drops beneath 3G it will not go to 3G until you hang up the call.

try running 3g only or wdma only by creating phone info shortcut on anycut .. im going to try that out and see if it ever drops .. should be a temporary fix for you atleast with the whole maps thing and such but if you ever in an edge only are your screwed

I changed it to wcdma only in phone info. Hopefully this works. Everywhere I travel to throughout NYC has 3G. Hopefully this works. Also I have noticed that when downloading anything from 3G be it the market or browser it would drop from 3G to Edge as well.

*UPDATE*
While at home downloading apps from Android Market on 3G with wcdma only selected the radio dropped with no netowkr connection. Bust.

Did she use att or tmobile with the iphone? Because att has a much stronger 3g network then tmobile which could be why. I am pretty sure it is something to do with tmobiles network and not your phone, perhaps your area has to many users for it to stay on 3G. I have read about how the cell towers work and they have only so many bands for each user to access at any given time so if tmobile doesn't have enough towers or those things mounted on the towers it may be set up so you only get 3G for data usage and not calls since they don't technically require it to work.

My wife is on ATT. Isn't lower frequency better at penetrating through walls and such? (T-Mo 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz compared to ATT 1800 MHz) They haven't booted their 850 MHz antennas yet so I hear.
If that is true then why not boot me down to Edge or gprs why all the way down to gsm? I been living in the same area for 26 years. I have been with T-Mo before they even had antennas in my area and walking outside was the only way to get a signal with my phone. Now I get full reception in and out of my apartment and 3G connectivity in my apartment with a signal strength of -93dBm through out my apartment on 3G and -79 dBm on Edge.
T-Mo stated that this should not be happening. Hence the 3 phones new battery and charger and techs to the antennas. I'm starting to think its a HTC Android problem and not a T-Mo problem. Hopefully a new radio update can fix it.

I didn't even know GSM was still used in that way, I thought GPRS would be the bare minimum. How can you tell the difference? I use to only get a G icon and I looked it up and for the g1 it said that meant GPRS, what does it show for GSM? Not like any of this matters though.
I really have no idea why all this is happening to your G1 but I hope it gets resolved, good luck.
edit: on the tmobile coverage map it says edge/gprs and 3g, no gsm. does that make any difference? I checked for NYC overall not any specific boroughs.

GSM is what Edge Gprs and 3G run off of. Think of it as a progression. GSM>GPRS>EDGE>3G.
The way I know it is on GSM is to the left of the Radio icon on the home screen there is another icon that shows the network your on. 3G=3G E=EDGE G=GPRS and no icon means GSM. GSM is still being used. Most SMS and MMS messages get sent to your from through GSM while you are on a call.

Problem with HD2, anyone else had this issue

This morning my phone stopped working. Screen went off, couldn't wake it up and couldn't charge it. None of the buttons did anything. I decided to try a soft reset as a last resort and it's working again now. HAs anyone else had this issue, and is it something that occurs a lot? I'm not happy about this

I can't find anything on XDA search to be honest. I tried that link you sent, but I can't find it on that either, any hints as to what keywords I should be using?
I also tried searching by members list, and finding all posts by beards, but I just get this long list, any idea which one he/she is?

Its a problem that has afflicted many HTC devices and seems somehow related to the phone moving between 2G and 3G in areas of poor 3G signal

Thanks for that hint, found lots of info on it now. This is going to show how really clueless I am, but apart from 3G being a lot faster I'm not sure what the difference is between 2G and 3G. Also, is the 2G and 3G just related to data usage/transfer, or is it calls as well?
If it's just data transfer then I may as well set it to 3G only as I'm too impatient to wait for the internet etc on 2G. If it responsible for the connection of calls as well I'm going to have to leave it on both as I quite frequently go from3G to 2G areas, and I don't want to keep losing signal for my phone.

GSM (2G) handles all the voice traffic and SMS in UK, plus basic GPRS speed at up to 56Kbps. Where available it also includes (E)dge connections for data up to about 100Kbps (technically can go much higher, but this is the practical limit)
3G and HSDPA (Also termed UMTS and WCDMA) are data only and can allow 330Kbps and up to 7.2Mbps respectively though you'll generally see around 200Kbps and 1-1.5Mbps as usable maxima. These protocols are also used for video calling and MMS media content. However if a device is set for WCDMA only, it can still make/receive voice and SMS services.
If all you do is use email, voice, SMS and basic web page browsing, there is an advantage in constraining the connection to GSM only, as the battery life will improve by up to 25%. For occasional higher volume web browsing it may still be worth staying on GSM, but switching to Auto or WCDMA when needed.
For frequent web use, then it's best to stay on Auto and take the battery hit. Don't select WCDMA only- the 3G service in UK is still patchy and if you go out of a 3G area, you;ll get no signal at all with this selection.
You may also see a few posts on here relating to auto-disconnecting the data signal after a timeout. In general this is not a good idea with current 'connected' devices as it prevents all the 'push' updating of email, Facebook etc. The programs to allow this were originally produced to prevent unwanted data charges when data was expensive, or when roaming. A lot of users are now utilising this in an effort to improve battery life- this is a little futile as the data connection itself uses the normal phone signal service channels and therefore negligible battery power, unless the 3G service is switched off at the same time.

I fI'm reading this right, you need 2G to make and receive calls, therefore if you select 3G only then you can't make and receive calls?

No- if you select 3G only you can make/receive calls and exchange fast data- but only if you are in a 3G coverage area. Out of 3G coverage and there's nothing
GSM only: Voice, SMS, Data wherever theres a signal. Good battery life. Slow data
3G only: Voice, SMS, fast Data, but nothing at all out of 3G coverage. Higher battery drain
Auto: Switches between the 2 above, but favours 3G where available so again, higher battery drain especially in marginal 3G signals where it will continually switch between protocols, potentially using a lot of battery power.

Ok, thanks for clearing this up. If I want to improve battery life, am I best to have it set to 2G, unless I want to use internet/email, and if I want to do that then swap it to 3G for this (assuming I don't want push mail)?
Also, most of the time I'm hooked up to wifi, so I'm assuming in this case I don't need 3G at all?

Even email (polled or push) is fine over 2G unless you are receiving large attachments.
When you are on WiFi, data should take that path so you are correct- 3G won't be needed.

Only connecting to Edge after a day or so...???

Hey guys, I'm in Madison, WI and I'm always connecting to Edge about after a day or so from restoring my phone.
If I clear my memory on the phone and start over. I'll get 3G for a day of fast browsing and then it turns into Edge only. I mean I see the "E" up there only and the connection is slow...
This is frustrating me. I'm not sure if it's the service or my phone. The wife's HD2 seems to be getting 3G okay though.

hey give this a try but also realize that 3g eats your battery much faster.
settings-->wireless controls-> click on phone not the on/off slider-->Band-->change from auto to wcdma. if you dont get a signal after this switch it back to auto changing it to wcdma tells your phone to only use H or 3g. personally i keep mine on gsm which locks in edge, makes my battery last a little longer!

Bad Reception with this phone?

Was wondering if anyone got bad reception with their phone. I tried 3 different carriers since I had my ideos, in neither of them I ever had very reliable reception and lately the problem is getting worse. I'm running aurora 4.1a and I loose reception all the time, and the battery drains so quick because it's always looking and looking. My sister, my mum and my dad all have good reception (2 of them with my old carrier and 1 with my current carrier).. I can put my dad's phone (same carrier) next to mine.. he will have full bars with 3g and I'll have no reception at all!!!!!! Then it connects and disconnects again, and so it goes... Anyone having such issues?

I'm having the same problem, I'm running Aurora ICS. I use to always have good reception everywhere, Then suddenly I've just been unable to. Any help would be great! If I do find out any fixes to the issue myself I will sure let you know.

I've fixed mine now, What I've done is I've gone into Settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Networks, and scrolled all the way to the bottom, and simply re-registered on the network and selected Use only 2G Data. Mines now working fine with full connection everywhere. However I don't know if our problems are exactly the same, however this is what fixed mine. Sorry if this doesn't help.

I have the same issue. Mine connects to 3G and has good connection, but then it simply disconnects and moves to 2G or reconnects to 3G some time later. That happens pretty frequently and I thought it was an issue with the carrier, but now I am not sure anymore.

Blefish, that is EXACTLY what happens to me, and I tried 3 major carriers in Australia (the only 3 that have their own actual towers). Just after I posted this thread, I happened to do the same thing as IwAsBlack recommended and... so far it seems to work. I have generally better connection and I haven't seen that ugly no reception icon since! Of course, internet browsing will be generally a bit slower but then again, it's better than staring at the phone for 3 minutes until it reconnects just to open Google.

You haven't stated which model you have. I got rid of a Motorola Bravo for at U8800-51 and I have excellent performance over AT&T (US). Crystal clear even with only one bar and I have never had a dropped call.

Have the same issue on any ROM with any mobile network in Belarus. Can't use 2G as recommended above 'cos of a huge use of mobile internet for some net-radio.

Its a U8800 Q&A forum, I didn't think that I had to state the version since I have a U8800.
Yesterday I tested and kept an eye on for the whole day! The reception since changing to 2G only has been AWESOME! Only had a drop out when I was in the subway (of course!) but aisde from that, I had amazing reception not to mention.. that my phone lasted the whole day with still 15% left!! (3G on, it would have to charge it twice while I'm at work) So, it fixed my reception AND my battery problems.

FYI, Ideos X5 U8800 describes four different models.

I know it does. What I meant is that I have the Normal U8800 model, so I didn't feel like it was necessary for me to point any variant model number like PRO or 51 or H, because it's STANDARD U8800

So we can make a conclusion that U8800 does not operate well on 3G. I can't switch it myself because I want to use internet too. And I am pretty sure we can't do anything about it, no matter if the problem is in hardware or software.

Mate, if you switch to 2G you will still be able to browse the internet! It will only be a LITTLE bit slower, better than having constant disconnection!!! I constantly use the internet to sync my gmail, send free texts, browse the net and a bunch of other stuff.. works even better on 2G with constant reception, not to mention the benefit of the phone battery lasting a whole day (AND still have internet).. so switch to 2G and you will like it... still good internet only with better reception

Having same issue when using GSM/WCDMA auto or preferred modes. works normal on GSM network only.
Even when I have no signal of 3g, gsm is working in the background.
problem arises when I have a call, 3g signal drops to minmimun, after the call phone tries to reconnect with the 3g signal but drops the GSM signal in the process.
Try this , as soon as you disconnect the call, try to call yourself from other at that instant only. Your phone will be shown unreachable because phone drops the GSM signals.

Mine works on wcdma, but that is because i have the radio.
